Abstract:Nowadays, environmental pollution by using fossil fuel-based products is a matter of social concern, leading to a need to create environmentally friendly and reusable materials. Coconut pith, a major by-product of the coconut fruit, is one of the primary causes of environmental issues because of its high lignin contents. To address these challenges, a novel fabrication of biomass carbon aerogel from coconut pith-derived cellulose is developed. One of the fabrication methods for carbon aerogel is the sol–gel method. However, the solvents for dispersing in this method are often volatile and toxic. In this article, cellulose aerogels were prepared by using polyamide amine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) to cross-link cellulose fibers to increase the table of the structure, followed by freezing in liquid nitrogen and lyophilization. The research shows that a PAE concentration of 40 wt% is appropriate to obtain carbon aerogel with low density (0.0145 g.cm−3), high porosity (98.99%), and excellent hydrophobic (a water contact angle of approximately 129°), as-prepared cellulose aerogel was pyrolyzed at 750 °C under N2 gas flow. The adsorption capacity of the as-fabricated aerogels for various oils and solvents is around 90 g.g−1 and shows a very minimal decline of 10% after five adsorption-regeneration cycles. This is an effective method for the fabrication of carbon aerogel by using coconut pith as raw material, with application in the adsorption performance, carbon aerogels from coconut pith are a promising application on oil/water separation, indicating their great potential in oil spill recovery and wastewater treatment.
