Abstract:In the field of bone tissue engineering, developing an optimal biomaterial that easily integrates with host tissues while maintaining high mechanical stability is critical. This research investigates the synergistic effects of adding wollastonite into the merwinite matrix for biological purposes. Merwinite (Ca 3 MgSi 2 O 8 ) and wollastonite (CaSiO 3 ) bioceramics were methodically synthesised using the sol-gel combustion process. With prior heat treatment, phase formation and morphological characteristics were explored using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy. Wollastonite's ability to produce apatite and its self-setting capabilities resulted in considerable improvements in composite properties. Notably, the resultant composite has compressive strength similar to that of human cortical bone, making it a suitable option for bone transplant alternatives. Furthermore, comprehensive cytotoxicity experiments on MG63 cell lines demonstrated greater inhibition at lower dosages, highlighting the composite's remarkable biocompatibility. These findings highlight the enormous potential of the merwinite/wollastonite combination as a flexible biomaterial for fostering bone tissue regeneration, ushering in significant advances in orthopaedics.
