Abstract:Polymer foams are promising for sound absorption applications. In order to process an industrial product, a series of polystyrene (PS) composite foams were prepared by continuous extrusion foaming assisted by supercritical CO2. Because the cell size and cell density were the key to determine the sound absorption coefficient at normal incidence, the bio-resource lignin was employed for the first time to control the cellular structure on basis of hetero-nucleation effect. The sound absorption range of the PS/lignin composite foams was corresponding to the cellular structure and lignin content. As a result, the maximum sound absorption coefficient at normal incidence was higher than 0.90. For a comparison, multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and micro graphite (mGr) particles were also used as the nucleation agent during the foaming process, respectively, which were more effective on the hetero-nucleation effect. The mechanical property and thermal stability of various foams were measured as well. Lignin showed a fire retardant effect in PS composite foam.

Abstract:With a growing focus on sustainable building thermal regulation for buildings, cellulose foams have emerged as promising materials due to their low thermal conductivity and biodegradable properties. However, their flammability and hygroscopic nature limit practical applications. This is attributed to the abundant hydroxy groups of cellulose. In this study, a sustainable, simple, and cost-effective method was proposed for the synthesis of multifunctional thermal insulation materials based on cellulose nanofiber composite foam with hydrophobic, flame retardant, and thermally insulating performance. As a result, the cellulose nanofiber composite foam showed a high mechanical modulus (6.3 ± 0.3 MPa), high compression strength (0.78 ± 0.10 MPa), and specific modulus (246.2 ± 34.4 MPa·cm 3 ·g− 1 ). The homogeneous three-dimensional (3D) porous network structure of cellulose nanofiber composite foam resulted in outstanding thermal insulation capabilities (LOI values of 60.7 ± 3.2, UL-94 V-0 rating) and low thermal conductivity (36.3 ± 0.8 mW·m− 1 K− 1 ). Furthermore, the incorporation of phytic acid (PA) imparted high flame retardancy, while cellulose nanofiber composite foam modified with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (POTS) maintained outstanding hydrophobicity (static water contact angle of 145.5° ± 0.2°) even under harsh environmental conditions. In this way, it is believed that cellulose nanofiber composite foam with light weight, high mechanical strength, thermal insulation, high flame retardancy, and hydrophobicity has great potential in thermal insulation materials.

Abstract:Foam materials have been widely used in a variety of applications. However, plastic foams pose a particularly complex problem to environment because they almost cannot be recycled and degraded in most areas. Here, naturally degradable cellulose-based bio-foams were obtained by combining refined pulp fibers, PAE, and sodium dodecyl sulfate after vigorous mixing, drainage, and drying, where porous structure was formed through internal hydrogen and chemical bonding between cellulose fibers. Mechanical properties of the resulting bio-foams were improved, and the bio-foams exhibit inherent low density, sufficient water stability, excellent natural degradability (93% degradation in 85 days), and good cost-efficiency. Considering low cost of the raw materials, foam designs through our strategy based on cellulosic materials have the potential to be a suitable solution to environmental challenges associated with extensive use of petrochemical-based foams.

One-pot complexation of phytic acid and polyethyleneimine on cellulosic microfibers towards insulative and flame-resistant foam

Abstract:Flame resistance is required for the deployment of bio-based materials, especially those forming cellular structures that endow thermal insulation. This study proposes a one-pot strategy to prepare cellular lignocellulosic composites with excellent flame resistance. Lignocellulosic microfibers were used as the substrate onto which a flame-retardant complex consisting of P-containing phytic acid (PA) and N-containing polyethyleneimine (PEI) was formed. Following the prediction of ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, PA and PEI are integrated onto MF-CTMP following a single-step complexation assembly triggered by pH effects. The PA-PEI modified MF-CTMP can be readily transformed into a composite solid foam by dewatering a wet foam followed by oven drying. At the expense of a slightly reduced thermal insulation (thermal conductivity increase from 33.6 ± 0.6 to 40.0 ± 0.6 mW/(m·K)) the presence of PA-PEI complexes significantly improved the mechanical performance of the foam and uniquely endows it with flame resistance. Compared to unmodified MF-CTMP foams, the composite foams showed significant improvement in the Young's, specific compression, and flexural moduli (increased by 13.5, 5.5, and 7.3 folds, respectively), a high oxygen index (up to 40.8 %) and self-extinguishing effects. The results suggest the suitability of the introduced lignocellulosic foam as an alternative to traditional synthetic polymer-based counterparts as well as inorganic matter for insulation, particularly relevant to the building sector.

Abstract:The development of eco-friendly and good-performance foam materials is essential for the environment and energy saving. Conventional inorganic and organic foams suffer from brittleness and contamination problems. Here, we report a facile and scalable hybrid strategy to prepare shape-stable cellulose-based multifunctional foam via physical cross-linking of PVA and stabilization of HGMs. The prepared foam exhibits ultra-low density (27.0 mg/cm3), enhanced flame-retardant performance (the PHRR decreased from 161.8 to 89.1 kW/m2, LOI value up to 26.2%), low thermal conductivity (48.2 mW/mK), good acoustic insulation property (NRC of 0.41), and good mechanical properties (with specific compressive modulus of 15.3 MPa cm3/g). Moreover, the foam can be recycled under simplified procedures. Our approach provides a novel alternative to the manufacture of low-cost, eco-friendly, and scalable foam materials. This multifunctional lightweight material is highly sought after for modern engineering construction applications.

Abstract:A multiscale design strategy is proposed to fabricate mechanically robust cellulose foam with well‐balanced attributes including low density, high porosity, flame self‐extinguishing, biodegradability, and process sustainability. This strategy effectively enhances performance through the utilization of physical and ionic cross–linking via cellulose nanofibrils and aluminum ion (Al3+), coupled with structural densification brought about by ice‐crystal templating, cross‐linking, and solvent exchange/evaporation. Cellulose foams are in high demand in an era of prioritizing environmental consciousness. Yet, transferring the exceptional mechanical properties of cellulose fibers into a cellulose network remains a significant challenge. To address this challenge, an innovative multiscale design is developed for producing cellulose foam with exceptional network integrity. Specifically, this design relies on a combination of physical cross–linking of the microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) networks by cellulose nanofibril (CNF) and aluminum ion (Al3+), as well as self‐densification of the cellulose induced by ice‐crystal templating, physical cross–linking, solvent exchange, and evaporation. The resultant cellulose foam demonstrates a low density of 40.7 mg cm–3, a high porosity of 97.3%, and a robust network with high compressive modulus of 1211.5 ± 60.6 kPa and energy absorption of 77.8 ± 1.9 kJ m−3. The introduction of CNF network and Al3+ cross–linking into foam also confers excellent wet stability and flame self‐extinguish ability. Furthermore, the foam can be easily biodegraded in natural environments , re‐entering the ecosystem's carbon cycle. This strategy yields a cellulose foam with a robust network and outstanding environmental durability, opening new possibilities for the advancement of high‐performance foam materials.

Abstract:Ultrastrong and thermo‐remoldable bio‐based composite foams with non‐flammability, humidity‐tolerant thermal insulation, and superb water vapor barrier are created via an economically attractive one‐pot strategy. Based on unique "expansion‐conductivity" behavior, the as‐prepared foams can be constructed as a sensitive fire alarm system with an ultra‐long alarm time (>1800 s). Post‐consumer foams can be quickly upcycled into bulk composites toward recycling economy. Foam thermal insulators are indispensable for prevailing energy‐saving engineering, however their widespread use brings intractability such as unsustainability, "white pollution", and fire hazards. The emergence of bio‐based foams is highly appreciated, but the fabrication approaches are economically unattractive and/or the product properties are inferior, making their large‐scale implementation unviable. Herein, a versatile, thermally remoldable phosphate‐containing polyurethane composite foam (LPU‐G) is constructed from natural lignin and expanded graphite flakes via an atmospheric pressure and scalable one‐pot strategy. The optimal LPU‐G exhibits exceptional mechanical strength, capable of supporting over 6000 times its weight without significant deformation. Moreover, the LPU‐G demonstrates the desired multifunctionality in handling extreme circumstances, including humidity‐tolerant thermal insulation, superb water vapor barrier, and withstanding ≈1200 °C flame without ignition. Based on the "expansion‐conductivity" micro‐mechanism, LPU‐G is the first foam material to be constructed as a sensitive fire alarm system with an ultra‐long alarm time (>1800 s). Surprisingly, LPU‐G can be rapidly upcycled into recyclable bulk composites for a second life through simple thermo‐molding processes rooted in the multi‐dynamic behavior of the phosphate, carbamate, and hydrogen bonds. The easy‐to‐scale LPU‐G represents a new generation of thermal insulators that address concerns regarding unsustainability, high cost, fire risk, and inferior mechanical properties.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) have been developed as building blocks for highly porous foams which are superior in thermal insulation. Unfortunately, the flammability and poor mechanical performance of CNF foams limited their practical applications. In this strategy, biopolymer sodium alginate, together with nontoxic boric acid and borate, were explored to play the roles of flame retardants for methyltrimethoxysilane cross-linked CNF foams. Their co-effects on preventing CNF foams from being ignited were revealed. The composite foams were self-extinguish and showed a considerably increased limited oxygen index (up to 39.5%). Additionally, the foams were flexible with good resilience and bendability. The eco-friendly foams with low thermal conductivity (0.028 W m(-1) K-1 at 25 degrees C), flexibility, and non-ignitability can meet the satisfactory in energy-conservation, wide applicability, and use safety.
Cyclotriphosphazene-bridged Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica-Integrated Cellulose Nanofiber Anisotropic Foam with Highly Flame-Retardant and Thermally Insulating Properties

Abstract:Thermally insulating materials derived from renewable cellulose nanofibers (CNF) have attracted an increasing attention from researchers. However, CNF insulating materials exhibit high combustion characteristic, restricting the potential for constructing the energy-efficient buildings. In this study, we synthesized cyclotriphosphazene- bridged periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMOPZ) for the first time. Afterwards, PMOPZ was integrated with CNF to design an anisotropic composite foam via the unidirectional freeze-drying method. The anisotropic composite foam exhibits superior flame-retardant and thermally insulating performance with low density (16.6 kg/m(3)) and high porosity (99.2%). PMOPZ/CNF foam has an ultra-low thermal conductivity of 27mWm(-1) K-1 in the radial direction, approaching the value of air (25 mWm(-1) K-1). Compared to CNF foam, the integration of PMOPZ results in the lowest peak heat release rate (18.2 kW/m(2)) and total heat release (0.53 MJ/m(2)), corresponding to a 72.4% and 68.5% reduction respectively. The gaseous and condensed analysis reveals that silica wrapped with intumescent char residues assembles together to restrain the permeation of exterior heat and oxygen and inhibit the effusion of pyrolytic volatiles. Moreover, the composite foam also has high mechanical strength with a specific Young's modulus of 96 kNm kg(-1). Therefore, this work provides a novel strategy to achieve cellulose-based insulating materials with high performance and fire safety.

Abstract:At present, the research and production of green fiber materials that replace plastics are becoming the consistent proposition of all countries that pay attention to environmental protection. In order to improve the thermal insulation properties of forest plant-based foams, which are low-cost and non-polluting, this paper explores the preparation of forest plant-based foams and the determination of their thermal insulation properties. Firstly, based on the three-factor orthogonal experimental method, variables such as the ratio of materials that may affect the foaming rate and the size of the mould were designed, and the influence of these variables on the foaming rate of the material was analysed. Then, for the samples obtained, slices were made and the thermal conductivity of the sample was measured by the hot plate method, and finally, for the measurement results, the influence of the foaming rate on the thermal conductivity was analysed by non-linear regression, and the regression equation between the two. The results show that the size of the mould has the greatest influence on the foaming rate out of all the independent variables influencing the results. At a foaming rate of 19.8%, the thermal conductivity of the material was the lowest and the material had the best thermal insulation effect.

Abstract:Traditional plastic foam, typically derived from fossil fuel-based polymers that are resistant to natural degradation, faces environmental challenges. As an alternative, cellulose, a biodegradable polymer, shows promise in the production of eco-friendly foam. Nonetheless, its reliance on hydrogen bonding between fibers poses limitations for practical applications. Here, drawing inspiration from bird nest structures, a straightforward and scalable method (co-assembly and thermal welding) has been developed for creating cellulose-PLA biofoam. The resulting biofoam displays advantageous properties such as low density (12.9 ∼ 27.1 kg/m 3 ), high compression strength (modulus of 12.1 MPa·cm 3 ·g −1 ), good thermal stability, and water stability (maintaining structural integrity in water). Moreover, it exhibits exceptional degradation rates (significant degradation within 40 days) and recyclability. Thus, this biofoam holds promise as a sustainable alternative to standard plastic foams, mitigating "white pollution."

Abstract:Thermally insulating materials made from renewable resources are desirable for energy efficient buildings. Traditional petroleum-derived insulating materials such as rigid polyurethane foam and expanded polystyrene display poor flame retardancy and inorganic insulating materials such as silica aerogel are fragile. Herein, we reported a facile approach to prepare cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-hydroxyapatite (HAP) composite foam by a simple freeze-drying process. The resultant HAP-CNF composite foams showed a thermal conductivity in the range of 38.5-39.1 mW/(m K) and very low peak heat release rate (20.4 kW/m(2)) and total heat release (1.21 MJ/m(2)). Vertical burning tests also manifested excellent fire resistance and self-extinguishing behaviours. Considering the excellent fire resistance of this composite foam, it is of significance to fire safety solution for buildings insulating materials.
Durable flame-retardant, smoke-suppressant, and thermal-insulating biomass polyurethane foam enabled by a green bio-based system

Abstract:Bio-based polyurethane foam has attracted increasing attentions due to eco-friendliness and fossil feedstock issues. However, the inherent flammability limits its application in different fields. Herein, we demonstrate a green bio-based flame-retardant system to fabricate polyurethane foam composite with durable flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and thermal insulation property. In this system, the green bio-based polyol (VED) with good reactivity and compatibility plays a role of flame retardant and EG acts as a synergistic filler. As a result, the LOI value of foam composite increased to 30.5 vol.% and it achieved a V-0 rating in the UL-94 vertical burning test. Additionally, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and the total smoke production (TSP) decreased by 66.1% and 63.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the foam composite maintained durable flame retardancy after accelerated thermal aging test, whose thermal-insulating property was maintained even after being treated in high-humidity environment with 85% R.H. for a week. This work provides a facile strategy for durable flame retardancy and long-term thermal insulation performance, and creates opportunities for the practical applications of bio-based foam composites. Abstract:A lightweight, fire‐proof 3D graphite‐cellulose foam is fabricated from resource‐abundant graphite and cellulose via a scalable and freeze‐drying‐free Cu2+ ionic crosslinking method. This recyclable, degradable, thermally insulating, and fire retardant foam is a strong candidate for replacing widely used petroleum‐based foam materials toward energy‐efficient engineering applications. Foam materials are widely used in packaging and buildings for thermal insulation, sound absorption, shock absorption, and other functions. They are dominated by petroleum‐based plastics, most of which, however, are not biodegradable nor fire‐proofing, leading to severe plastic pollution and safety concerns. Here, a fire‐proofing, thermally insulating, recyclable 3D graphite‐cellulose nanofiber (G‐CNF) foam fabricated from resource‐abundant graphite and cellulose is reported. A freeze‐drying‐free and scalable ionic crosslinking method is developed to fabricate Cu2+ ionic crosslinked G‐CNF (Cu‐G‐CNF) foam with a low energy consumption and cost. Moreover, the direct foam formation strategy enables local foam manufacturing to fulfil the local demand. The ionic crosslinked G‐CNF foam demonstrates excellent water stability (the foam can maintain mechanical robustness even in wet state and recover after being dried in air without deformation), fire resistance (41.7 kW m−2 vs 214.3 kW m−2 in the peak value of heat release rate) and a low thermal conductivity (0.05 W/(mK)), without compromising the recyclability, degradability, and mechanical performance of the composite foam. The demonstrated 3D G‐CNF foam can potentially replace the commercial plastic‐based foam materials, representing a sustainable solution against the "white pollution".

Abstract:Cellulose‐based foams offer a promising avenue for replacing traditional plastics with fully bio‐based alternatives. However, their practical use is limited by their lack of water resistance. In this work, the structure of wood where lignin protects the cellulose fibers is mimicked. By incorporating organosolv lignin directly into the cellulose foam templating, the hydrophobicity required for various practical applications is achieved. To replace common plastics, bio‐based alternatives are needed. Cellulose foams, as plant‐based materials, are the most attractive solution, being often biodegradable and inexpensive and having the potential for distributed production. Cellulose and its derivatives, as raw materials, present a fundamental challenge, as they are hydrophilic. Herein, this problem is solved by drawing inspiration from the hydrophobic barrier that lignin creates in wood and applying lignin to methylcellulose (MC) foams. The lignin (0.0–1.0 wt% being the range studied here) is applied directly to the suspension consisting of water and MC (1.8 wt%), which is then foamed and solidified to a dry 3D porous structure. By comparing different types of lignin and the resulting surface morphologies, it is shown that organosolv lignin (OL) most strongly self‐assembles to the air–foam interfaces, achieving area fractions up to 27%. Using different concentrations of OL, how hydrophobicity—described by the initial water contact angle and its time evolution—increases with increasing lignin concentration is then shown. Abstract:Foam materials are in great demand in modern society, which are widely used in shock absorption, packaging, heat preservation, and building insulation. However, the severe contamination of non-biodegradable plastic foam waste accumulated in the environment has increased the demand and interest in the development of degradable and multifunctional bio-sourced materials. Manufacturing of biomass foam, however, often requires long-term operation of specialized equipment under extreme conditions, making it not as environmentally friendly as claimed. Here we present an energy-efficient freeze-drying-free approach for bioplastic foam production from marine biomass waste via freeze-thawing of shear-flow-induced micro-/nano-fibrous hydrogels and rapid magnetic force-assisted squeezing and ambient drying, which differs substantially from existing inefficient and energy-consuming drying processes. The magnetic force-assisted pre-dehydration strategy prevents the collapse of the 3D network structure under capillary action during solvent evaporation, enabling a low density of 25.5–37.5 mg cm −3 and ultralow shrinkage of 9.3%-12.2%. These ambient-dried chitosan foams exhibit a high compressive modulus (366–732 kPa, supporting ∼ 4600 times its own weight), favorable thermal insulation performance (0.038 W m −1 K −1 ), competitive thermal stability, and fire resistance (smokeless combustion and self-extinguishing). Moreover, this bioplastic foam has been demonstrated to be recyclable and biodegradable with a substantially reduced environmental impact, as evidenced by life-cycle assessment analysis, representing a promising alternative to petroleum-based plastic foam.

Abstract:The significance of synthetic foams as insulative materials stems from their mechanical and water resistance as well as their cost-effectiveness. Broadly, the design of building envelopes should also consider fire and mold resistance and the impacts on the environment (end of life and compostability). This study addresses these issues considering the ever-increasing demand for sustainable sources to develop highly porous insulative materials. We introduce a versatile strategy based on wet-foam laying of cellulosic fibers that leads to hierarchical structures whose performance is tailored by the surface incorporation of betulin (BT), a bioactive molecule extracted from tree bark, combined with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) after installation of urethane linkages. As such, we introduce an eco-friendly alternative to traditional polyurethane foams with competitive mechanical and thermal insulation performance. The modification of the fiber foams at low BT loading simultaneously endows superhydrophobicity (water contact angle >150°), fire retardancy (self-extinguish within 10 s), microbial resistance, and durability (no degradation in soil conditions after 3 months). BT plays a critical role as an antimicrobial and hydrophobic agent that synergizes with PDMS to achieve fire resistance. The life cycle assessment of the BT-modified foams reveals a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emission and human toxicity compared with rigid polyurethane foams by 96 and 92%, respectively. Overall, the valorization of the bark-derived BT is demonstrated by considering the scalability and cost-effectiveness of solid foams designed to substitute petroleum-derived counterparts.

Abstract:<p>Hydrogel-born foam materials have been intensively developed because of great potential in various fields and environmental friendliness with water as foaming agent. However, the energy-consuming nature and pore collapse in the preparing and using process limit their application. Herein, a facile strategy is present to fabricate a dimensional stable hydrogel-born foam by simple acid-heat treatment and subsequent fast microwave foaming. The microwave heating rapidly evaporates and expands water into cells in the gel while the heat softening of the hydrogel further facilitates the formation of the cells. Moreover, the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and the crosslinking degree of the foam can be regulated by controllable conversion of amide groups of the hydrogel to the imide groups during the acid-heat treatment. As a result, it successfully avoids the pore collapse in both of the preparation and use process. With hierarchical pore structure and controllable moisture absorption, the foam shows with excellent dimensional and thermal insulation. In addition, the foam provides superior mechanical properties and fire retardance over traditional foams. The flame-retardant mechanism was proposed. The fabrication of this hydrogel-born foam is facile, flexible and can be adapted for extensive applications in building structures.</p>

Abstract:The methods used to date to produce compressible wood foam by top-down approaches generally involve the removal of lignin and hemicelluloses. Herein, we introduce a route to convert solid wood into a super elastic and insulative foam-like material. The process uses sequential oxidation and reduction with partial removal of lignin but high hemicellulose retention (process yield of 72.8%), revealing fibril nanostructures from the wood's cell walls. The elasticity of the material is shown to result from a lamellar structure, which provides reversible shape recovery along the transverse direction at compression strains of up to 60% with no significant axial deformation. The compressibility is readily modulated by the oxidation degree, which changes the crystallinity and mobility of the solid phase around the lumina. The performance of the highly resilient foam-like material is also ascribed to the amorphization of cellulosic fibrils, confirmed by experimental and computational (molecular dynamics) methods that highlight the role of secondary interactions. The foam-like wood is optionally hydrophobized by chemical vapor deposition of short-chained organosilanes, which also provides flame retardancy. Overall, we introduce a foam-like material derived from wood based on multifunctional nanostructures (anisotropically compressible, thermally insulative, hydrophobic, and flame retardant) that are relevant to cushioning, protection, and packaging.
Comprehensive enhancement of flame retardant starch/cellulose/diatomite composite foams via metal-organic coordination

Abstract:In recent years, considerable attention has been given to the utilization of biomass for producing bio-based foams, such as starch-based foams. Despite their renewability and widespread availability, these foams still present certain drawbacks regarding their poor mechanical properties and flammability. To tackle these concerns, a metal ion cross-linking strategy was employed by incorporating calcium ions (Ca2+) solution into foamed starch/cellulose slurry. Followed by ambient drying, starch/cellulose composite foam was successfully fabricated with a remarkable enhancement in various properties. Specifically, compared to the control sample, the compressive strength and modulus increased by 26.2 % and 123.0 %, respectively. Additionally, the Ca2+ cross-linked starch/cellulose composite foam exhibited excellent heat resistance, water stability, and flame retardancy. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) reached 52 %, with a vertical combustion rating of V-0. Along with the addition of 2 phr diatomite, it demonstrated a significant enhancement on flame retardancy with a LOI of 65 %, although the apparent density of the composite foam was not low enough. This study indicated a green and simple method to obtain starch-based composite foams with enhanced comprehensive properties including thermal, water stability, mechanical, and flame retardancy, expanding their potential applications in areas such as building materials and rigid packaging.
