Abstract:We present a facile two-step strategy to fabricate a novel nanoporous core-shell Cu@Cu2O nanocomposite photocatalyst. The photocatalyst was synthesized via the combination of dealloying of the as-milled Al66.7Cu33.3 (at.%) precursor powders in alkaline media with subsequent surface oxidation in air. The microstructure of the as-prepared photocatalyst has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that the as-prepared photocatalyst exhibits an open, bicontinuous interpenetrating ligament (ca. 30 nm)-channel (ca. 15 nm) structure, and is comprised of Cu (core) and Cu2O (shell) phases. Methyl orange (MO) was used as the model pollutant, and photodegradation experiments were monitored by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The nanoporous core-shell Cu@Cu2O photocatalyst shows excellent photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of MO under sunlight. The MO degradation rate can reach as high as 8.04 mg min(-1) g(cat)(-1). In addition, the influence of additive amounts of photocatalyst and initial concentrations of MO on the photodegradation process has been investigated. The photodegradation mechanism of the as-prepared photocatalyst has also been discussed.

Abstract:In this study, Co/N co-doped polyhedron carbonaceous catalyst (Co@N-C-2) with abundant mesoporous, high graphitization degree and cobalt content was synthesized via the pyrolysis of core-shell MOFs composite (ZIF-8@ZIF-67). The two cobalt species (Co NPs and Co-N-x) coexisted in Co@N-C-2 were unveiled to play different role in PMS activation. Concretely, the Co-N-x served as active sites for O-1(2) evolution pathway, while Co NPs greatly improved the graphitization degree and thus enhanced the electron transfer pathway. Owing to the novel structure, the as-prepared Co@N-C-2 presented superior catalytic performance upon PMS activation for the removal of several organic pollutants in comparison with the catalysts derived from single MOFs (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67) and the transition metal oxides. Moreover, Co@N-C-2 could be recovered by thermal treatment, and the Co@N-C-2/PMS system also showed high resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matter (NOM). This study reveals the crucial role of cobalt species in regulating the structure of catalyst and determining the PMS activation pathway.

Abstract:A series of Fe-N-C single atom catalysts embedded within the carbon nitride network (Fe-N-C/CNx) were developed to effectively degrade a commonly used organic dye, Malachite green (MG). Fe-N-C/CNx catalysts were achieved by pyrolyzing the hybrid of polypyrrole (PPy) and Melamine-cyanuric acid complex (MCA) containing trace Fe3+ (Fe/PPy@MCA) at different temperatures. Given the structural change of polymeric net-works and nitridation of Fe3+, the mesoporous Fe-N-C/CNx hybrids comprise multiple components, including Fe -N-C, Fe4N, and CNx species, which show enhanced photocatalytic performance toward MG by integrating the high catalytic ability of Fe components and efficient visible-light harvest of CNx network. Notably, the Fe-N-C/CNx-700 hybrid obtained at 700 degrees C exhibits the high removal efficiency of 92.1% toward MG under visible light, with good reproducibility and stability. The biotoxicity of degraded products was further investigated by anti-bacterial experiment and plant growth effect. This work provides new insights into the development of efficient photocatalysts of nanohybrids for treating organic dyes.
Cobalt Single Atoms on Tetrapyridomacrocyclic Support for Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activation.

Abstract:Transition-metal catalysts that can efficiently activate peroxide bonds have been extensively pursued for various applications including environmental remediation, chemical synthesis, and sensing. Here, we present pyridine-coordinated Co single atoms embedded in a polyaromatic macrostructure as a highly efficient peroxide-activation catalyst. The efficient catalytic production of reactive radicals through peroxymonosulfate activation was demonstrated by the rapid removal of model aqueous pollutants of environmental and public health concerns such as bisphenol A, without pH limitation and Co2+ leaching. The turnover frequency of the newly synthesized Co single-atom catalyst bound to tetrapyridomacrocyclic ligands was found to be 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than that of benchmark homogeneous (Co2+) and nanoparticulate (Co3O4) catalysts. Experimental results and density functional theory simulation suggest that the abundant π-conjugation in the polyaromatic support and strong metal-support electronic interaction allow the catalysts to effectively adsorb and activate the peroxide precursor. We further loaded the catalysts onto a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane and demonstrated that the model pollutants were oxidatively removed as they simply passed through the filter, suggesting the promise of utilizing this novel catalyst for realistic applications.

Abstract:Benefited from developed pore structure and synergistic effect with MOFs, the porous carbon not only provides a stable carrier for MOFs but also serves as a buffer for organic pollutants to promote removal of malachite green (MG). Herein, a bimetallic CoFe-MOF was anchored successfully on bamboo pulp black liquor (BPBL)-derived porous carbon (PC) by hydrothermal method, and then PC loaded with elemental and oxide of cobalt and iron was acquired through high-temperature pyrolysis. Adsorption capacity of the prepared CoFe/PC on MG can reach 1894 mg/g; additionally, catalytic degradation efficiency of MG reached 98.9% within 28 min. The loading of Co and Fe oxides enhances adsorption properties of PC for MG, and synergistic effect of Co and Fe elements and the synergistic effect of MOFs and PC also improves degradation efficiency of CoFe/PC for MG. Additionally, loading of Co and Fe provides magnetic properties for PC, which is convenient for recovery. These results indicate that the combination of bimetallic MOFs and porous carbon supplies an alternative for MG removal.

Herein, ZnO nanoparticles encapsulated into N-doped porous carbon has been rationally prepared by the pyrolysis of a metal-organic framework (MOF) followed by a moderate oxidation treatment. The resulting catalyst exhibits excellent activity, selectivity, and recyclability in the CO2 cycloaddtion reactions with epoxides owing to the synergy of multiple sites inherited from the MOF and generated by the oxidation process.

Abstract:A new porous Co-MOF, {Co 2 (μ 3 -OH)(L)(H 2 O) 2 } n ( 1, H 3 L = 5- ((4'- (tetrazol- 5''- yl) benzyl) oxy) isophthalic acid) was designed and synthesized under solvothermal conditions and displayed a classic 5-node uninodal boron nitride (bnn) topology as well as good catalytic activity for cyanosilylation and Strecker reactions at room temperature. Then using 1 as the filler and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as the matrix, composite nanofiber membrane 1 @PVDF-n and mixed matrix membrane 1 @PVDF-m were successfully prepared via the electrospinning technique and casting method, respectively. These two composite membrane catalysts could be easily separated from the reaction system and reused many times without loss of activity. Moreover, compared with 1 @PVDF-m, 1 @PVDF-n showed better catalytic activity owing to its high concentration of MOF doping and hierarchical pore structure which facilitated the contact between the substrates and the catalytic active centers in a certain region. It provides a new strategy for developing new MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:The degradation of refractory pollutants via the activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) by Co-based nanostructures as catalysts has been gaining significant attention. However, most cobalt-based catalysts suffer from severe aggregation and metal ion leakage, resulting in a loss of activity and potential environmental threats. In this study, exfoliated montmorillonite (EMMT) loaded Co–CoAl2O4 composites were elaborately constructed through a facile coprecipitation-reduction method. The effects of the calcination temperature, the EMMT addition content, the pH of the precursor, and the reduction temperature on the microstructure of the Co–CoAl2O4/EMMT composites were investigated, and the optimum synthesis conditions were determined. In the optimal sample, well-crystallized CoAl2O4 nanoparticles were uniformly deposited onto the EMMT nanosheets with a considerably large specific surface area, while ultrafine metallic Co nanoparticles were homogeneously immobilized on the CoAl2O4 surface. This sample exhibited a superior activity (90% within 70 min) and reusability during methyl orange (MO) degradation. In the catalytic reaction, the superior adsorption property of EMMT facilitated the rapid transfer of MO molecules to the catalytically active sites. Moreover, CoAl2O4 acted as a transition layer which provided a cobalt source for the subsequent reduction process and regulated the growth of metallic Co nanoparticles, which increased the number of active sites for catalysis. Simultaneously, the metallic Co can not only activate PDS by being an electron donor, but also initiate the formation of Co-based redox pairs. This study offers new insights into the synthesis of efficient and cost-effective supported Co-based catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, a novel MOF (metal organic framework) based composite of β-BCoPc/Cu-BTC is fabricated by immobilizing β-aryloxy phthalocyanine cobalt (β-BCoPc) on Cu-BTC (benzenetricarboxylic acid-Cu) via a facile impregnation approach. After a systematic characterization via X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, the above-synthesized catalyst is for the first time applied to photocatalytically decompose refractory malachite green (MG) dye pollutant under UV light irradiation. In comparison with that of the β-BCoPc or Cu-BTC monomers, the synthesized β-BCoPc/Cu-BTC composite shows a significantly enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance of MG with a best degradation efficiency up to 90.12 %, which can easily be attributed to the synergistic effect between the Cu-BTC and β-BCoPc effectively improving light utilization efficiency, accelerating charge transportation and reducing charge recombination due to the desirable properties such as the conjugacy of the MOFs skeleton, the positive catalytic activity of central ion and large specific surface area, etc. In conclusion, the present work provides an effective and novel strategy via preparing MOF-based composite catalyst to realize the photocatalytic degradation of MG.
Nano-Cellulose/MOF Derived Carbon Doped CuO/Fe3O4 Nanocomposite as High Efficient Catalyst for Organic Pollutant Remedy

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF)-based derivatives are attracting increased interest in various research fields. In this study, nano-cellulose MOF-derived carbon-doped CuO/Fe3O4 nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via direct calcination of magnetic Cu-BTC MOF (HKUST-1)/Fe3O4/cellulose microfibril (CMF) composites in air. The morphology, structure, and porous properties of carbon-doped CuO/Fe3O4 nanocomposites were characterized using SEM, TEM, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The results show that the as-prepared nanocomposite catalyst is composed of Fe3O4, CuO, and carbon. Compared to the CuO/Fe3O4 catalyst from HKUST-1/Fe3O4 composite and CuO from HKUST-1, this carbon-doped CuO/Fe3O4 nanocomposite catalyst shows better catalytic efficiency in reduction reactions of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), methylene blue (MB), and methyl orange (MO) in the presence of NaBH4. The enhanced catalytic performance of carbon-doped CuO/Fe3O4 is attributed to effects of carbon preventing the aggregation of CuO/Fe3O4 and providing high surface-to-volume ratio and chemical stability. Moreover, this nanocomposite catalyst is readily recoverable using an external magnet due to its superparamagnetic behavior. The recyclability/reuse of carbon-doped CuO/Fe3O4 was also investigated.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is an important issue in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) technology. In this work, cobalt and nitrogen-doped ultrathin oxygen-rich carbon nanosheets derived from 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) were successfully fabricated. The as-prepared catalyst can effectively degrade tetracycline (TC) with a high reaction constant (0.088 min-1). Quenching test, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology, and the electrochemical test indicate that the radical pathway plays a minor role in the degradation process, the 1O2 based nonradical pathway dominates the reaction. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed that the Co-N sites on the carbon structure serve as the dominant active sites, and the oxygen functional groups in close vicinity to Co-N sites can dramatically influence local electronic structure and its interaction with PMS molecule, a high correlation between the reaction constant and hydroxy groups content could be due to the Co-N sites close to hydroxyl groups has a moderate PMS adsorption energy. This work provides new insight into the design of highly efficient Fenton-like catalysts.

Abstract:As a class of highly recalcitrant water contaminants, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have raised considerable concerns. Here, we develop a biochar-derived flower-like Co-Mo2C sphere/g-C3N4 (CMCN) heterostructure photocatalyst for typical PPCPs degradation. The flower-like Co-Mo2C nanostructure is derived from biochar, an inexpensive and ubiquitous plant byproduct. The open-up nanoflake structure with sharp edges can induce the fast charge collection and separation. DFT calculations and experimental characterizations are conducted to fundamentally understand the enhanced intrinsic photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared CMCN photocatalysts, especially the role of Co atoms. The delocalized charge density of CMCN could be rational tailored via the increasing density of state and the difference in work functions between g-C3N4 and Co-Mo2C. The electron density of Mo 3d in CMCN is increased through integrating it with Co atoms, which possess numerous delocalized electrons. Compared with the Mo2C/g-C3N4 (MCN) bulk, the CMCN catalyst displays superior photocatalytic activity for the typical PPCPs degradation, mainly arising from the multifaceted open-up surfaces of Co-Mo2C nanoflower, the higher density of electron and more efficient charge transfer ability, as well as the prolonged life time of photogenerated charge carriers. This work provides a cheap and mild route for synthesizing Co-doped Mo2C nanoflower catalyst and expands the scope of constructing high active g-C3N4 based heterostructure.

Abstract:2D catalysts combined with single atom sites are promising candidates to promote CO2 reduction performance, but the ability to target stable materials with distinct structure still remains challenging. Herein, a series of single metal atoms anchored 2D metal-organic framework nanosheets (MOF-NS-M) with visualized and well-ordered mesoporous structures are fabricated and exhibit enhanced CO2 reduction activity and selectivity with the assistance of visible-light. Encouragingly, the CO Faradaic efficiency of MOF-NS-Co exceeds 90% in a wide potential window of -0.5 to -1.0 V versus RHE and reaches 98.7% with 100 mV positive shift compared with the result measured under dark. The catalytic kinetics studies show a fast initial electron transfer to CO2 to form *COO- , thanks to the sufficient exposed active sites resulting from the nanosheet nature and adjusted electron transfer pathway caused by the porphyrin photoswitch.

Abstract:In recent years, new heterogeneous catalysts derived from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this work, zeolite imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) and sulfide nanozero-valent iron (S-Fe) were used as precursors to prepare S-Fe/Co bimetallic nanoparticles embedded in graphitized carbon (S-Fe/Co@GC) and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). Morphological and structural characterization indicated that S-Fe/Co@GC compared to pre-carbonization, the pore size of the material became larger, formed a graphite carbon skeleton with excellent electrical conductivity. In a 0.2 g/L S-Fe/Co@GC and 0.6 mM PMS system, 96.1% of TBBPA (20 mg/L) was degraded within 30 min, and the degradation yielded a total organic carbon (TOC) removal of 56.2% in 60 min. This excellent catalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effect of graphitic carbon, sulfide nanozero-valent iron and metallic cobalt. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology indicated that reactive oxygen species (ROS) included HO•, SO4 •−, O2 •− and 1O2, among which O2 •− plays a leading role in the degradation of TBBPA. Based on the LC-MS analysis of the degradation intermediates, the degradation pathway of TBBPA in the S-Fe/Co@GC/PMS system was proposed. In addition, S-Fe/Co@GC showed a low ion leaching rate, and the regenerated S-Fe/Co@GC still had high catalytic performance. This work will extend the development of MOFs encapsulate functional nanoparticle materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract:A novel strategy for better catalytic performance in terms of precisely tuning the metal atom number of active centers is gradually getting attention. In this paper, the Co atom pair sites on N-doped porous carbon was engineered. The binuclear Co2 site structure was identified by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. As expected, the Co2NC display an outstanding Fenton-like catalysis activity in tetracycline degradation with turnover frequency exceeding 0.91 min-1 that is approximately 4 times higher than the conventional CoN4 site. The EPR tests indicated that the ROS strength stimulated by the binuclear site was much stronger than that of single site. Theoretical density functional theory calculations reveal that the optimized adsorption configuration is the O1 of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) interacting with two Co atoms, leading to stronger interaction effect and electron transfer for PMS comparing to single atom sites.

With multiple active sites (Co 0 , pyridine N, and graphitic N), exhibited superior catalytic properties for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation toward the degradation of sulfamerazine (SMZ). The efficiency of SMZ degradation reached 92.4 % within 10 min and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate reached 70.3 % within 30 min. Using radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ), hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were identified in this system, while 1 O 2 was the dominant active species for SMZ removal. The degradation intermediates of SMZ in /PMS were monitored by high performance liquid chromatography–time of flight mass spectrometry (HPLC–TOFMS).

Abstract:Owing to the electrical conductivity and periodic porosity, conductive metal-organic framework (cMOF) ultrathin films open new perspectives to photocatalysis. The space-selective assembly of catalytic sites and photosensitizers in/on cMOF is favorable for promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers and mass transfer. However, the controllable integration of functional units into the cMOF film is rarely reported. Herein, via the synergistic effect of steric hindrance and an electrostatic-driven strategy, the dinuclear-metal molecular catalysts (DMC) and perovskite (PVK) quantum dot photosensitizers were immobilized into channels and onto the surface of cMOF ultrathin films, respectively, affording [DMC@cMOF]-PVK film photocatalysts. In this unique heterostructure, cMOF not only facilitated the charge transfer from PVK to DMC but also guaranteed mass transfer. Using H2O as an electron donor, [DMC@cMOF]-PVK realized a 133.36 μmol·g-1·h-1 CO yield in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, much higher than PVK and DMC-PVK. Owing to the excellent light transmission of films, multilayers of [DMC@cMOF]-PVK were integrated to increase the CO yield per unit area, and the 10-layer device realized a 1115.92 μmol·m-2 CO yield in 4 h, which was 8-fold higher than that of powder counterpart. This work not only lightens the development of cMOF-based composite films but also paves a novel avenue for an ultrathin film photocatalyst.

Abstract:A 3D interwoven porous pristine Co‐metal‐organic framework (MOF) is successfully synthesized as an efficient photocatalyst for CO2 reduction, in which the mechanism of CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) outstanding performance originates from synergistic effect of structural feature, metal center, and organic ligand. As a desired utilization of the conversion of CO2 into valuable carbon fuel production under solar energy, it remains challenging due to the lack of efficient catalysts. Herein, a 3D interpenetrating metal‐organic framework of [Co(Tipa)(HCOO)2(H2O)]·H2O (Co‐Tipa) with 1D open channel is solvothermally synthesized using a semi‐flexible ligand (Tipa = tri‐(4‐(1H‐imidazol‐1‐yl)‐phenyl)amine). The tridentate bridge ligand‐oriented periodicity Co‐Tipa MOF is combined with ruthenium‐based photosensitizers under mild reaction conditions to form an efficient nonhomogeneous co‐catalyst for photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). As a crystalline MOFs catalyst, the CO production rate, selectivity, and the quantum yield under visible light irradiation offer outstanding performance for the synergistic advantages of structural feature, metal center, and organic ligand. The stability and reusability of the Co‐Tipa co‐catalyst in the reaction system are profited from the robust 3D entangled framework. The mechanism of how to enhance CO2RR performance for the Co‐Tipa is assisted in illustration through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. By leveraging the unique structural properties of entangled MOFs, this study offers innovative approaches for the development of more effective and s Co‐Tipa catalysts that can selectively CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels.

Designing Dual-Atom Cobalt Catalysts Anchored on Amino-Functionalized MOFs for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Unlocking the potential of sustainable fuel production through the development of highly efficient CO2 reduction catalysts under visible light irradiation remains an ongoing challenge. Herein, we report a strategically designed Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) photocatalyst, incorporating binuclear cobalt complexes as catalytic sites for effective CO2 reduction. Impressively, our Co2-MOF(-NH2) catalyst showcased a CO yield of 2.44 mmol·gCo-1·h-1, outperforming its mononuclear counterpart Co-MOF(-NH2) (0.23 mmol·gCo-1·h-1) by 10.5 times, underscoring the exceptional catalytic capabilities of the dual-atom catalyst. A combination of experimental findings and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations unveiled the synergistic catalytic effect between the two Co sites and the heightened light absorption attributed to the incorporation of the amino group. Notably, such characteristics are evocative of cooperative catalysis observed in biological enzyme systems. This study highlights a pioneering, bioinspired approach to designing efficient dual-atom MOF photocatalysts for CO2 reduction, offering significant implications for the future of sustainable energy production.
