Abstract:Developing high-efficient hybrids carbon catalysts for PMS-based advanced oxidation process (AOPs) are crucial in the field of environmental remediation. In this work, novel carbon nanocubes (xFe‒N‒C) with three-dimensional porous structure and abundant well-dispersed FeNx sites were obtained via a skillful cage-encapsulated-precursor pyrolysis strategy. The as-synthesized xFe‒N‒C exhibited superb activity for phenol degradation by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Besides, the catalytic system not only possessed good recycling performance, wide pH adaptation and relatively low activation energy, but also had high resistance to environmental interference. Singlet oxygen (1O2) dominated non-radical process was responsible for phenol degradation rather than traditional radical pathways. Impressively, the doping level of Fe could regulate FeNx contents in catalysts, and the catalytic activity of xFe‒N‒C was greatly enhanced with increasing FeNx contents. Based on density functional theory calculations (DFT), the introduction of FeNx sites regulated the electronic structure of catalysts. Such electron-deficient Fe center acted as electron acceptor to receive electrons transmitted by the adsorbed PMS, thus generating highly reactive 1O2 for rapid phenol oxidation. This work provides a new insight into the innovation in transition metal-nitrogen hybrid carbon catalysts and highlights the pivotal roles of FeNx sites in 1O2 generation during PMS activation process.

Abstract:In this study, Co/N co-doped polyhedron carbonaceous catalyst (Co@N-C-2) with abundant mesoporous, high graphitization degree and cobalt content was synthesized via the pyrolysis of core-shell MOFs composite (ZIF-8@ZIF-67). The two cobalt species (Co NPs and Co-N-x) coexisted in Co@N-C-2 were unveiled to play different role in PMS activation. Concretely, the Co-N-x served as active sites for O-1(2) evolution pathway, while Co NPs greatly improved the graphitization degree and thus enhanced the electron transfer pathway. Owing to the novel structure, the as-prepared Co@N-C-2 presented superior catalytic performance upon PMS activation for the removal of several organic pollutants in comparison with the catalysts derived from single MOFs (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67) and the transition metal oxides. Moreover, Co@N-C-2 could be recovered by thermal treatment, and the Co@N-C-2/PMS system also showed high resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matter (NOM). This study reveals the crucial role of cobalt species in regulating the structure of catalyst and determining the PMS activation pathway.
Cobalt Single Atoms on Tetrapyridomacrocyclic Support for Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activation.

Abstract:Transition-metal catalysts that can efficiently activate peroxide bonds have been extensively pursued for various applications including environmental remediation, chemical synthesis, and sensing. Here, we present pyridine-coordinated Co single atoms embedded in a polyaromatic macrostructure as a highly efficient peroxide-activation catalyst. The efficient catalytic production of reactive radicals through peroxymonosulfate activation was demonstrated by the rapid removal of model aqueous pollutants of environmental and public health concerns such as bisphenol A, without pH limitation and Co2+ leaching. The turnover frequency of the newly synthesized Co single-atom catalyst bound to tetrapyridomacrocyclic ligands was found to be 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than that of benchmark homogeneous (Co2+) and nanoparticulate (Co3O4) catalysts. Experimental results and density functional theory simulation suggest that the abundant π-conjugation in the polyaromatic support and strong metal-support electronic interaction allow the catalysts to effectively adsorb and activate the peroxide precursor. We further loaded the catalysts onto a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane and demonstrated that the model pollutants were oxidatively removed as they simply passed through the filter, suggesting the promise of utilizing this novel catalyst for realistic applications.

Abstract:Single-atom Co catalysts are emerging as attractive materials for Fenton-like reaction. However, they still suffer from unsatisfactory activity due to the symmetrical electronic structure and strong electronegativity around CoN 4 sites. Elaborately modulating the local electronic features of CoN 4 sites can substantially improve Fenton-like activity, which is still challenging. Herein, a porous Co-N-C-based aerogel with rich CoN 4 and even-embedded CoO x was fabricated as a platform that enabled efficient PMS activation for pollution degradation via regulating electronic configuration and architecture. This hybrid could degrade 99 % of p-nitrophenol (PNP, 40 mg/L) in 3 min with a rate constant of 8.95 × 10 −1 min −1 . Systematic studies and theoretical calculations revealed that CoN 4 acted as main active sites with optimal binding energy for PMS activation, while CoO x could significantly increase PNP adsorption with absorption energy of −1.33 eV (2.56 times higher than that of CoN 4 ). More importantly, the engineered CoO x induced electron redistribution of CoN 4 sites, leading to electron-rich central Co atom and reduced electronegativity of N atom in CoN 4 . This optimal electronic configuration of CoN 4 could accelerate PMS activation on Co sites, simultaneously CoO x could reduce the d -band center of hybrid to optimize the desorption of reactive oxygen species (ROSs)on CoN 4 for boosting degradation kinetics. This work offers an effective and simple strategy to elaborately modulate the microenvironment of single-atom Co toward elevated catalytic performance by tandem effect of oxide.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes synergistically activated by dual atom catalysts (DACs) have become a cutting-edge technology for environmental remediation. Herein, a Ni-Co-2H-MoS 2 (NCMS) DAC was successfully prepared by introducing bimetals (Ni and Co) into the framework of the 2H-MoS 2 co-catalyst through a host–guest strategy. The NCMS/PMS catalysis system exhibits significant decontamination performance for tetracycline, and its removal efficiency of 99.6% is 3.7 times and 4.0 times higher than that of the Ni-2H-MoS 2 /PMS and Co-2H-MoS 2 /PMS single atom catalysts, respectively. Besides, density functional theory (DFT) was employed to disclosure the role of the active sites of NCMS DAC, investigate the influence of heteronuclear diatomic doping on electron aggregation and delocalization, and analyze the mechanism of PMS activation and TC degradation. Experimental results and theoretical simulations demonstrate that Ni and Co atoms of NCMS exert a reasonable regulation effect on the coordination environment and electronic structure, thereby promoting PMS activation with a unique synergy mode. The introduction of Ni lowers the adsorption energy barrier of PMS on the DAC, facilitating subsequent PMS activation. Meanwhile, the interaction between Co and Mo accelerates valence restoration and evolution of Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Mo 4+ / Mo 5+ / Mo 6+ , further improving catalytic activity. This work provides a novel strategy for the on-demand design of Fenton-like reactions by regulating microenvironment of the catalyst.

Abstract:A nonradical oxidation-based peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is an attractive process for pollutant elimination. Herein, a dual-metal-organic framework (MOF) assisted strategy to construct magnetic Fe-Mn oxycarbide anchored on N-doped carbon (FeMn@NC) was proposed for PMS activation. It was found that FeMn@NC-800 displayed superior activity than other comparable counterparts, with nearly 100% degradation of sulfamethazine (SMZ) within 30 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching tests revealed that nonradical oxidation ( 1 O 2 and high-valent metal-oxo species) dominated the SMZ degradation process. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrated that FeMn oxycarbide preferred adsorbing the terminal O of PMS, which could improve the PMS oxidization to produce SO 5 •− , further generating 1 O 2 . Moreover, dual active sites could lower the energy barrier to cleave the O−O bond of PMS to form high-valent FeMn = O species. The present study provided a clue to rationally design high-performance heterogeneous catalysts and proposed a novel nonradical-based catalytic oxidation for environmental cleaning.

Abstract:As one of the tactics to produce reactive oxygen radicals, the Fenton-like process has been widely developed to solve the increasingly severe problem of environmental pollution. However, establishing advanced mediators with sufficient stability and activity for practical application is still a long-term objective. Herein, we proposed a facile strategy through polymeric carbon nitride (pCN) in-situ growth single cobalt atom for efficient degradation of antibiotics by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy prove the single cobalt atoms are successfully anchored on pCN. Moreover, extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis shows that the embedded cobalt atoms are constructed by covalently forming the Co-N bond and Co-O bond, which endow the single-atom cobalt catalyst with high stability. Experiment results indicate that the prepared single-atom cobalt catalyst can be used for efficient PMS activation catalytic degradation of tetracycline with a high degradation rate of 98.7 % in 60 min. And the CoN/O sites with single cobalt atoms serve as the active site for generating active radical species (singlet oxygen) from PMS activation. This work may expand the strategy for constructing single-atom catalysts and extend its application for the advanced oxidation process.

Abstract:Due to the complex structure of metal–carbon-based catalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), it is difficult to clarify the active sites and catalytic mechanisms. Constructing of structure–activity relationship is conducive for identifying active center, but there is still a gap in the bimetal-carbon-based catalysts/PMS systems. Here, we report a highly efficient and stable CuCo bimetal-nitrogen doped carbon catalyst (CuCo@C-N) for the activation of PMS for efficient degradation of PNP. By manipulating the catalyst structure, establishing the structure–activity relationship and combining with DFT calculation, the non-metallic active centers were determined, including defects, C=O and graphite N. Co was the only metal active center, and the presence of Cu accelerated the redox cycle of the system. The degradation of PNP was dependent on electron transfer and ROS activation. The metal active center was used to generate sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ), and the non-metal active sites accelerated electron transfer and non-radical pathways to generate 1 O 2 .

Abstract:Fenton-like technology is an eco-friendly and efficient method to degrade organic contaminants. Herein, a bimetallic catalyst with high catalytic activity was obtained by anchoring Co and Mn on N-doped carbon materials (MnCo/N-C) through a one-step pyrolysis process. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was activated by cobalt nanoparticles, nitrogen-coordinated metal atoms, and defect sites in MnCo/N-C to produce several reactive species, including SO 4 •– , 1 O 2 , O 2 •– , and •OH. The catalyst showed high activity and excellent stability during the catalytic processes. The degradation of 50 mL of rhodamine B solution with a concentration of 0.03 g/L was almost completed in only five minutes by using 0.1 g/L of the catalyst and 0.2 g/L of PMS. Furthermore, the catalyst could be used over a wide pH range of 3–11. Overall, this work provides a simple approach to preparing a more effective and long-lasting Fenton-like catalyst for the degradation of organic contaminants.

Abstract:In this work, a series of catalysts were facilely fabricated by one pot pyrolysis of Zn-Fe-MOFs precursors which was ingeniously designed by incorporating of NH 2 -group N and doping Zn 2+ into Fe-based MOF to solve the problem of Fe aggregation. The results indicated that the reasonable design of the precursor significantly improved catalytic performance of the catalysts. As the optimized catalyst, exhibited outstanding catalytic activity in the activation of PMS for paracetamol degradation. In /PMS system, paracetamol was completely degraded in 8 min and the degradation constant was 204 times of that for The quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiment results confirmed that SO 4 - • and •OH occurred during the reaction, while SO 4 - • was identified as the main reactive species in the /PMS system. Furthermore, graphite N, Fe-N x and Fe 0 were possible catalytically active sites. This research provides a new idea for the rational design of carbon-based catalysts in the field of advanced oxidation.

Abstract:A series of transition metal (Co, Ni, Fe) nanoparticles were confined in N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) prepared (Co@NCNTs, Ni@NCNTs, and Fe@NCNTs) by the polymerization method. The structure and composition of catalysts were well characterized. The catalytic activity of catalysts for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was conducted via acid orange 7 (AO7) degradation. Among the catalysts, Co@NCNTs performed the best catalytic activity. Additionally, Co@NCNTs performed good catalytic activity in pH values of 2.39–10.98. Cl − and SO 4 2 - played a promoting roles in AO7 degradation. NO 3 − presented a weak effect on the catalytic performance of Co@NCNTs, while HCO 3 − and CO 3 2− significantly suppressed the catalytic performance of Co@NCNTs. Both non-radical ( 1 O 2 and electron transfer) and free-radical (·OH and SO 4 ·− ) pathways were detected in the Co@NCNTs/PMS system. Notably, 1 O 2 was identified to be the main active specie in this study. The catalytic activity of Co@NCNTs gradually decreased after cycle reuse of Co@NCNTs. Finally, the toxicity of the AO7 degradation solution in the study was evaluated by Chlorella pyrenoidosa .

Abstract:Herein, we present atomically dispersed cobalt anchored carbon nitride (Co-CN) as a highly efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-activation catalyst. Different from the traditional catalytic pathways, in which hydroxyl radical, sulfate radical, singlet oxygen, or surface-bound PMS engaged as primary oxidants, high-valent cobalt-oxo [Co(IV)] species generated from a unique two-electron transfer pathway are confirmed as primary oxidants. Hydroxyl radical triggered by Co(IV) serves as secondary intermediate oxidant. In addition, it is interesting to find that such Co(IV)-based nonradical pathway can be switched to a radical-dominated pathway under light irradiation, suggesting the Co-CN can not only act as a PMS activator but also as a photoswitch to regulate the PMS oxidation pathways. On the basis of experiment and DFT calculations, the switchable catalysis can be attributed to the formation of photoinduced hole-trapping sites on the single Co atoms, which result in the primary PMS activation sites convert from single Co atoms to melem units. More importantly, considering the distinctive oxidation feature of Co(IV) and radical species, our finding provides a novel strategy to expand the application possibilities of Co-based Fenton-like process in dealing with different environmental issues by flexibly controlling the PMS catalytic pathways.

Abstract:Simultaneously rational optimization and design of the structure and composition are extremely significant approaches to further improve the performances of catalysts. Herein, a novel magnetic material (C-Co-TN) of Co nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped nanocarbon was successfully fabricated as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation catalyst. The derivative C-Co-TN was obtained from one new MOFs of Co-TN (Co(TTPA)(4-Nba)(H2O)2]·4-Nba·0.5DMF, TTPA = tris(4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)phenyl)amine) as a precursor for the first time, in which the Co ions and N-ligands of Co-TN were respectively transformed to Co nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon layer via a one-step pyrolysis. The C-Co-TN with a large specific surface area (258.40 m2 g−1) displayed excellent PMS activation for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation with 93.3% efficiency within 30 min superior to the pure Co-TN, in which the obtained kinetic constant for TCH removal in the C-Co-TN/PMS system was 3 times greater than Co-TN/PMS system. The final degradation rate of TCH was maintained above 94% in a wide pH range of 4–9, and 47% of TOC could be eliminated. The higher TCH removal efficiency was attributed to Co0 nanoparticles, Co-Nx/pyridinic N and graphitic N in C-Co-TN as catalytic active sites. The SO4·−, ·OH, O2·− and 1O2 were coexisted in C-Co-TN/PMS system. The work not only provides a possibility for converting MOFs into magnetic catalyst with excellent catalytic performance for water remediation, but also gives underlying insight in non-free radical pathways of heterogeneous catalysis induced by nitrogen-doped porous carbon.

Abstract:Degradation efficiency and catalyst stability are crucial issues in the control of organic compounds in wastewater by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, it is difficult for catalysts used in AOPs to have both high catalytic activity and high stability. Combined with the excellent activity of cobalt/copper oxides and the good stability of carbon, highly dispersed cobalt-oxide and copper-oxide nanoparticles embedded in carbon-matrix composites (Co-Cu@C) were prepared for the catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The catalysts exhibited a stable structure and excellent performance for complete phenol degradation (20 mg L−1) within 5 min in the Cu-Co@C-5/PMS system, as well as low metal-ion-leaching rates and great reusability. Moreover, a quenching test and an EPR analysis revealed that ·OH, O2·−, and 1O2 were generated in the Co-Cu@C/PMS system for phenol degradation. The possible mechanism for the radical and non-radical pathways in the activation of the PMS by the Co-Cu@C was proposed. The present study provides a new strategy with which to construct heterostructures for environmentally friendly and efficient PMS-activation catalysts.

Abstract:Cobalt-based materials were considered as promising catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, while few reactive sites and ion leaching limit its environmental application. Herein, Co(OH)2 nanosheets in-situ anchored hydroxylated hollow tubular g-C3N4 (Co/CNH) was successfully fabricated by a facile impregnation method, and used to activate PMS for enrofloxacin hydrochloride (ERF) degradation. Compared with neat Co(OH)2 and CNH, the optimum catalyst (10 %Co/CNH) exhibited higher ERF degradation efficiency for 95.6 % within 30 min. The enhanced performance was attributed to the synergistic effect between Co(OH)2 and CNH. CNH can not only provide numerous nucleation sites for Co(OH)2 to inhibit its agglomeration, but also provide abundant OH− for formation of the key PMS activation species CoOH+. Furthermore, DFT-based electron density difference elucidated that the sp3 hybridization introduced by OH− greatly facilitated charge transfer from 10 %Co/CNH to PMS. A series of characterization verified that 1O2 dominated the degradation of ERF (nonradical pathway), SO4•− and •OH (radical pathway) as well as electron transfer also contributed to this process. Fukui index (f−) and bond degree (BD) indicated that reactive oxygen species tend to attack atoms with higher f− and scavenge covalent bonds with larger BD in the process of ERF degradation.

Abstract:Developing high-efficient, low-cost and environmentally friendly catalysts is essential for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) but remains a challenge. Recently, novel catalysts of transition metal-nitrogen co-doped carbon materials, especially Fe-N-C, have attracted much attention due to their superior performance for PMS activation. Herein, FeSO 4 and ZnSO 4 were added during the synthesis of ZIF-8, obtained concave N, S co-doped iron-based carbon materials () with mesoporous structure through high-temperature pyrolysis. This porous carbon material with a depressed surface not only promoted the exposure of active sites, but also accelerated mass transfer. The synergistic effect of Fe atoms and heteroatoms significantly enhanced the activation ability of the material to PMS. Benefiting from these advantages, only 2 mg/L Fe-S 1 @NC and 0.5 mM PMS was required to achieve the rapid degradation of acetaminophen (ACT) (99.7%, 0.7290 min -1 ). Besides, the activation system has a wide pH adaptability and low leaching iron concentration. Then the reaction mechanism of Fe-S 1 @NC/PMS system was investigated by quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance technique (EPR), it was proposed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the primary reactive species responsible for the degradation of ACT. This study provides new insight for the design of carbon catalysts in advanced oxidation field.

Abstract:Iron and nitrogen co-doped carbon-based catalysts have garnered significant attention for their efficacy in the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), Tetracycline (TC) and other organic pollutants through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. However, designing catalysts with both high activity and abundant active sites has proven challenging, primarily due to the limited understanding of the structure-activity relationship. Herein, we present a straightforward synthesis of iron and nitrogen co-doped carbon nanosheets (FeNC) that exhibit exceptional activity in activating PMS for degradation of RhB and TC. The FeNC material shows robust resistance to interference across a wide pH of 1.5 to 10, resistance to inorganic anions and humic acid (HA). More importantly, the Fe 3 C nanoparticles are uniformly anchored within the carbon layer, effectively prevent metal leaching. Unlike the traditional sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes, our study reveals that non-radical singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) serves as the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for the degradation processes through quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. Structural characterizations and spectroscopic study indicate that the potential active sites on FeNC, namely CO, graphitic and pyridinic nitrogen play an important role in this degradation. Particularly noteworthy is the discovery that Fe 3 C species, present in the FeNC-900/PMS system, also contribute significantly to the degradation of TC. Moreover, we have proposed potential degradation pathways for RhB and TC based on the results of liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer (LC-MS) measurement. Overall, this study offers novel insights into the development of heterogeneous iron and nitrogen co-doped carbon-based catalysts for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) via PMS activation.

Abstract:The modulation of bimetallic oxide structures and development of efficient, easily recoverable catalysts are expected to effectively overcome the limitations associated with powdered catalysts in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In this study, CuCo2O4 was successfully immobilized on the surface of nickel foam (NF) via an electrodeposition-calcination procedure, with highly efficient activation of PMS for tetracycline (TC) degradation (0.55 min-1). Besides acting as a support carrier and providing ample active sites, NF mediated electron transport, prevented the leaching of metal ions and enhanced the efficiency of recycling. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental tests illustrated that Cu/Co dual-sites can efficiently adsorb PMS, enabling simultaneous reduction and oxidation reactions. The dual-site synergy substantially decreased the adsorption barrier and increased the electron transfer rate. Especially, the Cu+/Cu2+ redox couple acted as an electron donor and facilitated rapid charge transfer, leading to the conversion of Co3+ to Co2+. Moreover, the CuCo2O4@NF + PMS system effectively eliminated TC by employing radical pathways (SO4•-, •OH) and nonradical processes (1O2, e-). Therefore, this study introduces a new approach to overcome the limitations of powdered bimetallic oxides, providing a promising solution for practical applications.
Cobalt Single Atoms Anchored on Oxygen-Doped Tubular Carbon Nitride for Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activation: Simultaneous Coordination Structure and Morphology Modulation

Abstract:Simultaneous regulation of the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and engineering architectures with efficient exposed active sites are efficient strategies for boosting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. We isolated cobalt atoms with dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination (Co-N3O1) on oxygen-doped tubular carbon nitride (TCN) by pyrolyzing a hydrogen-bonded cyanuric acid melamine-cobalt acetate precursor. The theoretically constructed Co-N3O1 moiety on TCN exhibited an impressive mass activity of 7.61x10(5) min(-1) mol(-1) with high O-1(2) selectivity. Theoretical calculations revealed that the cobalt single atoms occupied a dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination environment, and that PMS adsorption was promoted and energy barriers reduced for the key *O intermediate that produced O-1(2). The catalysts were attached to a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane to deliver an antibiotic wastewater treatment system with 97.5 % ciprofloxacin rejection over 10 hours, thereby revealing the suitability of the membrane for industrial applications.
Preparation of Co-C/N flower-like single-atom catalysts via TCPP coordination confinement for enhanced activation of peroxymonosulfate

Abstract:The design and preparation of highly efficient advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) catalysts is a crucial research area in the field of water pollution control. Herein, a single-atom AOP catalyst Co-N/C material (TPM-650) has been synthesized through the pyrolysis of the flower-shaped Co-TCPP MOF precursor, which is designed based on coordination confinement with TCPP. HAADF-STEM image analysis confirms the uniform distribution of single Co atoms throughout the TPM-650 material, which served as the highly efficient catalytic centers and can achieve 99.99% catalytic degradation of MG dyes in 24 min with only trace dosage ([TPM-650] = 1 mg/L, pseudo-first-order kinetic model, K obs =0.302 min −1 ) and low leaching of Co ions (0.348 μg/L). Under optimal condition, the degradation of MG exhibits a high turnover number (dTON) of 68.5 mmol h −1 g cat −1 and a significant reduction in total organic carbon (TOC) by 58.7%. Radical quenching experiments and EPR measurements demonstrated that various reactive oxygen species (•SO 4 − , •OH, 1 O 2 , M IV (O)/M V (O)) contributes to accelerating MG degradation. The enhanced efficiency and stability were attributed to the ultrathin layer supported single-atom Co-N/C structure, high mesopore volume, and synergy between the catalyst and peroxymonsulfate (PMS) with a synergy index of 16.5. This study not only reports a highly efficient and stable advanced oxidation catalyst Co-N/C, but also confirms that the nitrogen-coordinated Co sites are the primary active sites responsible for PMS activation; thus providing valuable insights into designing efficient transition metal-based AOP catalyst via coordination method for environmental remediation.
