Abstract:Plasma wakefield generation by a ≤ 1.2 MW, 25.5 GHz, < 0.6 ns High Power Microwave beam injected into a ~10 10 cm -3 plasma filled circular waveguide is experimentally verified by applying a probing electron beam in the transverse direction to the wave propagation. Abstract:An experimental method to measure the electric fields existing in a plasma wake produced by a ∼0.24 GW, ∼0.5 ns, 9.5 GHz microwave pulse traversing a plasma-filled waveguide is presented. The intensity of the second harmonic of a 30 fs 800 nm laser generated inside a gas-filled dielectric tube placed inside the waveguide is used to characterize the wakefield parameters. Three distinct decaying oscillations of the plasma wakefield, with peak amplitude of ∼20 kV/cm, were observed. The experimental results were confirmed by 3D large-scale plasma particle-in-cell simulations.

Abstract:We present the first experimental observation of the predicted 1 plasma wake excitation driven by a powerful gigawatts sub-nanosecond K-band microwave (26 GHz, > 1 GW, <0.5 ns) in a cylindrical waveguide preliminary filled by a plasma produced by a flashboard. The plasma time dependent parameters were studied using single Langmuir probe, microwave interferometry, microwave cut-off and visible spectroscopy. The sub-nanosecond microwave pulse was generated by a super-radiant backward wave oscillator driven by an annular electron beam (∼320 keV, ∼1.6 kA, ∼5 ns), produced by a magnetically insulated foilless diode powered by a ∼320 kV negative polarity high-voltage generator of ∼0.5 ns rise-time improved by a gas-filled spark-gap switch. The electron beam propagates through a slow-wave structure guided by an 8 T axial magnetic field. Frequency-modulation during the transmitted microwave pulse is observed, the result of the dynamics of the plasma density modulation during the wake excitation. 1D analytical modeling and 3D PIC (Particle-in-Cell) simulations confirm the connection between the transmitted microwave pulse frequency and the plasma density modulations.

Abstract:We present the first experimental observation of the predicted [1] high-power microwave (9.6 GHz, <500 MW, <0.5 ns) driven plasma wakefield formation in a plasma-filled cylindrical waveguide. The high-power microwave pulse is generated by a super-radiant backward wave oscillator (SR-BWO) driven by an annular electron beam (∼280 keV, ∼1.5 kA, ∼5 ns), produced by a magnetically insulated foilless diode, and guided through a slow-wave structure by a 2.5 T axial magnetic field [2]. Energetic electrons of >20 keV energy were collected in the radial direction outside the waveguide. The appearance of such high energy electrons can be related to the ponderomotive force and the plasma wakefield formation. The transmitted microwave signal shows frequency-modulation and pulse compression, the result of the plasma density modulation appearing in the wake of the propagating microwave pulse. ID analytical modeling and 3D PIC (Particle-in-Cell) simulations support the experimentally observed frequency modulation of the transmitted microwave pulse and the radial electron accelerations.

Abstract:We present the results of an experimental, theoretical, and numerical study of short and long time wake, produced by a 0.6ns, 0.5GW, 9.6GHz high power microwave (HPM) pulse propagating in a plasma-filled cylindrical waveguide. The perturbation of the plasma density caused by the ponderomotive force prevents not only the pulse from spreading due to dispersion, but also leads to pulse compression. The high power pulse leaves far behind it a long lived positively-charged plasma whose electrons oscillate in the Coulomb potential well and ionize the background neutral gas over several tens to hundreds of nanoseconds. This leads to long time light emission observed in the experiment. The density of this newly created plasma can exceed many-folds its initial value. The theoretical model shows that as a result of the wake excitation by the propagating HPM pulse, fast electrons are ejected and collected on the waveguide wall. These high energy electrons, pulse compression, and long time light emission are evidence of the wake formation. The results of the experiment, the analytical model, and the numerical simulations are in good agreement.

Abstract:High-power microwave pulse generation (∼1.2 GW, ∼0.4 ns, 28.6 GHz) by a super-radiant backward wave oscillator (SR-BWO) and the feasibility of wakefield-excitation with this pulse in a plasma-filled waveguide are presented. The SR-BWO is driven by an electron beam (∼280 keV, ∼1.5 kA, ∼5 ns) generated in a magnetically insulated foilless diode and propagating through a slow-wave structure in a guiding magnetic field of 8 T. The plasma produced by an array of flashboards filling a cylindrical wire-array waveguide attached at the exit of the SR-BWO is also characterized. 1D and 3D numerical simulations demonstrate that for the experimental parameters of the microwave pulse and the flashboard plasma filling the waveguide, a wakefield forms accompanied by significant periodic density modulations such that their radial location and depth can be controlled by the waveguide radius, plasma density, and microwave power.

Abstract:We present the results of experiments, analytical modeling, and numerical particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations for the propagation of a high-power, sub-nanosecond microwave pulse through a plasma-filled cylindrical waveguide in a parameter regime not studied before. Depending on the experimental conditions, the non-linear interaction of the high-power microwave (HPM) pulse with the plasma results in self-channeling through it or causes the formation of a wakefield. To study this phenomenon, two backward wave oscillators (BWOs), operating in the super-radiant mode at frequencies of 9.6 and 28.6 GHz, were designed and tested. These BWOs were driven by an electron beam (-280 keV, -1.5 kA, -5 ns) generated in a magnetically insulated foil-less diode, from which it propagates through a slow wave structure guided by an external axial magnetic field. Microwave pulses of -0.4-ns width, up to -500-MW peak power at 9.6 GHz, and up to -1.2 GW at 28.6 GHz were obtained. These powerful subnanosecond timescale microwave beam pulses were injected into the neutral gas, plasma, or their mixture in various configurations.

Abstract:A new method capable of capturing coherent electric field structures propagating at nearly the speed of light in plasma with a time resolution as small as a few femtoseconds is proposed. This method uses a few femtoseconds long relativistic electron bunch to probe the wake produced in a plasma by an intense laser pulse or an ultra-short relativistic charged particle beam. As the probe bunch traverses the wake, its momentum is modulated by the electric field of the wake, leading to a density variation of the probe after free-space propagation. This variation of probe density produces a snapshot of the wake that can directly give many useful information of the wake structure and its evolution. Furthermore, this snapshot allows detailed mapping of the longitudinal and transverse components of the wakefield. We develop a theoretical model for field reconstruction and verify it using 3-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. This model can accurately reconstruct the wakefield structure in the linear regime, and it can also qualitatively map the major features of nonlinear wakes. The capturing of the injection in a nonlinear wake is demonstrated through 3D PIC simulations as an example of the application of this new method.

Abstract:Light-speed moving wakefield structure in a laser plasma accelerator is directly observed and quantitatively reconstructed using an ultrashort relativistic electron probe in a single shot. The stable electron probes utilized here are directly generated through laser wakefield acceleration via ionization injection. As the probe bunch traverses the wake, its momentum is modulated by the electric field of the wake, leading to a density variation of the probe after free-space propagation. From the density image of the probe, the local plasma wavelength, the wake width and the electric field in linear wakes can be accurately calculated, leading to the first observation of plasma wakes at the density as low as 1017 cm-3. Furthermore, detailed features of multiple wakes excited by a laser with the aberrated profile are observed and confirmed by 3D PIC simulations. By varying the time delay between the driving laser and the probe, time-resolved observation of the wake evolution (excitation, propagation, and damping) can be readily obtained, and this suggests that ultrafast electron probe can be a powerful new tool for the study of wakefield acceleration. The method is particularly well suited for visualizing linear wakefields that can accelerate both electrons and positrons as well as collective fields associated with shocks and instabilities in plasmas and warm dense matter.

Abstract:We show experimental results of probing the electric field structure of plasma wakes by using femtosecond relativistic electron bunches generated from a laser wakefield accelerator. Snapshots of laser-driven linear wakes in plasmas with different densities and density gradients are captured. The spatiotemporal evolution of the wake in a plasma density up-ramp is recorded. Two parallel wakes driven by a laser with a main spot and sidelobes are identified in the experiment and reproduced in simulations. The capability of this new method for capturing the electron-and positron-driven wakes is also shown via 3D particle-in-cell simulations.

Abstract:Relativistic wakes produced by intense laser or particle beams propagating through plasmas are being considered as accelerators for next generation of colliders and coherent light sources. Such wakes have been shown to accelerate electrons and positrons to several gigaelectronvolts (GeV), with a few percent energy spread and a high wake-to-beam energy transfer efficiency. However, complete mapping of electric field structure of the wakes has proven elusive. Here we show that a high-energy electron bunch can be used to probe the fields of such light-speed wakes with femtosecond resolution. The highly transient, microscopic wakefield is reconstructed from the density modulated ultra-short probe bunch after it has traversed the wake. This technique enables visualization of linear wakefields in low-density plasmas that can accelerate electrons and positrons beams. It also allows characterization of wakes in plasma density ramps critical for maintaining the beam emittance, improving the energy transfer efficiency and producing high brightness beams from plasma accelerators.

Abstract:We show that a high-energy electron bunch can be used to capture the instantaneous longitudinal and transverse field structures of the highly transient, microscopic, laser-excited relativistic wake with femtosecond resolution. The spatiotemporal evolution of wakefields in a plasma density up ramp is measured and the reversal of the plasma wake, where the wake wavelength at a particular point in space increases until the wake disappears completely only to reappear at a later time but propagating in the opposite direction, is observed for the first time by using this new technique.

Abstract:The non-linear interaction between powerful short laser pulse with plasma and neutral gas has stimulated enormous interest during the last few decades since plasma as a medium, without limiting of electrical breakdown, is capable of accelerating charged particles to extremely high energy at a very short distance by the plasma wakefield compare with the conventional accelerators. The interaction of ultra-high-power, ultra-short microwave pulses with plasma and gas also gains considerable interest since its scaled the laser-induced plasma wakefield dynamics spatially from micrometer to centimeter, temporally from femtosecond to nanosecond. In this chapter, we show a series of studies of the non-linear effect between ultra-short (sub-nanosecond), ultra-high-power (several hundreds of megawatts) microwave pulses with neutral gas and plasma such as self-channeling of high-power microwave pulse through gas and plasma, microwave-driven plasma wakefield formation, and complete absorption of such powerful microwave pulse in plasma.
Powerful Terahertz Emission from Laser Wakefields in Inhomogeneous Magnetized Plasmas

Abstract:Powerful coherent terahertz (THz) pulses with a broad spectrum (0.1-3 THz) can be produced from a laser-driven wakefield through linear mode conversion in inhomogeneous magnetized plasmas with the maximum plasma density of 10(17) cm(-3). This occurs when a laser pulse, with an optimized duration about 300 fs, is incident either normally or obliquely to the density gradient of inhomogeneous magnetized plasmas. The external dc magnetic field has a magnitude of a few tesla. By changing the strength and direction of the magnetic field, one can enhance or suppress the THz emission. The maximum energy conversion efficiency in the magnetized plasmas can be double that in the unmagnetized plasmas. Such wakefield emission can be a powerful THz source at the MW level and capable of affording field strength of a few MV/cm, suitable for THz nonlinear physics. Because these THz emissions are always with a positive chirp, with a proper dispersion compression, single-cycle THz pulses can be generated with higher peak powers and field strengths.

Abstract:Plasma wakefields are both excited and probed by propagating an intense 28.5 GeV positron beam through a 1.4 m long lithium plasma. The main body of the beam loses energy in exciting this wakefield while positrons in the back of the same beam can be accelerated by the same wakefield as it changes sign. The scaling of energy loss with plasma density as well as the energy gain seen at the highest plasma density is in excellent agreement with simulations.

The external dc magnetic field is a few tesla. By changing the strength and direction of the magnetic field, one can enhance or suppress the THz emission. We also propose that single-cycle THz pulse can be directly emitted from a transient net current driven by laser ponderomotive force in a THz-wavelengh-scale plasma slab. Theory and simulations show that this THz source is capable of providing power of MW-GW, field strength of MV/cm-GV/cm, and tunability range of 0.1-10 THz, which would open up new horizons for nonlinear THz science and applications.

Abstract:The exploration of new acceleration mechanisms for compactly delivering high-energy particle beams has gained great attention in recent years. One alternative that has attracted particular interest is the plasma-based wakefield accelerator, which is capable of sustaining accelerating fields that are more than three orders of magnitude larger than those of conventional radio-frequency accelerators. In this device, acceleration is generated by plasma waves that propagate at nearly light speed, driven by intense lasers or charged particle beams. Here, we report on the direct visualization of the entire plasma wake dynamics by probing it with a femtosecond relativistic electron bunch. This includes the excitation of the laser wakefield, the increase of its amplitude, the electron injection, and the transition to the beam-driven plasma wakefield. These experimental observations provide first-hand valuable insights into the complex physics of laser beam–plasma interaction and demonstrate a powerful tool that can largely advance the development of plasma accelerators for real-time operation.

Abstract:We outline plans to use plasma light emitted as atomic lines radiation as a diagnostic for wakefields driven in plasma by a self-modulating, long proton bunch. This diagnostic is built into the design of a new vapor/plasma source that will also allow for imposing a plasma density step of various height at various locations. Such a step of a few percent in relative density placed at a location where the self-modulation process grows is predicted by numerical simulations to make the bunch drive wakefields with GV/m amplitude over hundreds of meters of plasma.

Enhanced signature of vacuum birefringence in a plasma wakefield

Abstract:Vacuum birefringence (VB) is a basic phenomenon predicted in quantum electrodynamics (QED). However, due to the smallness of the signal, conventional magnet-based and extremely intense laser-driven detection methods are still very challenging. This is because in the first case the interaction length is large but the field is limited, and vice versa in the second case. We put forward a method to generate and detect VB in a plasma bubble wakefield, which combines both advantages, providing large fields along large interaction lengths. A polarized $\gamma$-photon beam is considered to probe the wakefield along a propagation distance of millimeters to centimeters in the plasma bubble. We find via plasma particle-in-cell simulations that the VB signal in terms of Stokes parameters can reach about $ 10^{-5}$ ($10^{-3}$-$10^{-2}$) for tens of MeV (GeV) probe photons with moderately intense lasers ($10^{20}$-$10^{21}~\mathrm{W/cm^2}$). The main source of noise from plasma electrons is mitigated, in particular, by a choice of $\gamma$-photon polarization and by proper modulation of the plasma density. The proposed method represents an attractive alternative for the experimental observation of VB via laser-plasma interaction.

Abstract:Recent initiatives in ultra-short, GeV electron beam generation have focused on achieving sub-fs pulses for driving X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) in single-spike mode. This scheme employs very low charge beams, which may allow existing FEL injectors to produce few-100 as pulses, with high brightness. Towards this end, recent experiments at SLAC have produced ~2 fs rms, low transverse emittance, 20 pC electron pulses. Here we examine use of such pulses to excite plasma wakefields exceeding 1 TV/m. We present a focusing scheme capable of producing ~200 nm beam sizes, where the surface Coulomb fields are also ~TV/m. These conditions access a new regime for high field atomic physics, allowing frontier experiments, including sub-fs plasma formation for wake excitation.
