Abstract:Sm:YAlO3 (Sm:YAP) crystal with size of Φ28 × 80 mm3 was grown by Czochralski (Cz) method. Polarized absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra of Sm:YAP crystal were discussed for the first time. The peak emission cross-sections were calculated to be 0.80 × 10−21 cm2 (604 nm for a-polarization), 1.82 × 10−21 cm2 (604 nm for b-polarization) and 1.63 × 10−21 cm2 (610 nm for c-polarization), respectively. The Judd-Ofelt (JO) intensity parameters were calculated to be Ω2  = 2.59 × 10−20 cm2, Ω4  = 1.78 × 10−20 cm2 and Ω6  = 2.98 × 10−20 cm2, respectively. The decay lifetime of 4G5/2 energy level was measured to be 2.51 ms. All above results indicate the Sm:YAP crystal may be a potential candidate of reddish-orange laser pumped directly by the GaN/InGaN laser diode.

Abstract:Nd3+:Ba3Gd2(BO3)(4) single crystal of sized empty set20 mm x 20 mm was grown by the Czochralski technique. The effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ in Ba3Gd2(BO3)(4) crystals was measured tribe 1.147. A series of thermal properties, including specific heat, the average linear thermal expansion coefficient, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, were systematically determined as a function of temperature. The thermal conductivity along a, b and c-axes increases with increasing temperature. The room temperature polarized absorption spectrum was obtained over the range of 330-1000 nm, together with the room temperature fluorescence spectrum. The spectral parameters of the crystal were calculated by using the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory. The fluorescence lifetime is 80.58 mu s and the fluorescence quantum efficiency is eta(c) = 43.8%. A large FWHM value, moderate absorption cross-section and high thermal conductivity show that Nd3+:Ba3Gd2(BO3)(4) crystal holds promise as a useful solid state laser material. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A good quality (5 at.% Yb:GdScO 3 ) single crystal of φ30 mm×37 mm was grown successfully by the Czochralski method. Its structure was studied by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and its atomic coordinates were obtained by Rietveld refinement. The crystal field energy level splitting of Yb 3+ in GdScO 3 was determined from the absorption and photoluminescence spectra at 8 K. Only 2 F 7/2 (4) is far from the ground state 2 F 7/2 (1) by 710 cm -1 among the crystal field energy levels splitted from 2 F 7/2 , so it is more easier to realize the laser operation of 2F5/2(1)→ 2 F 7/2 (4) with wavelength 1060 nm. The spin-orbit coupling parameters and intrinsic crystal field parameters (CFP) (k = 2, 4, 6) of the crystal were fitted by the superposition model. The CFP evaluated with and coordination factor were taken as the initial parameters to fit the crystal field energy levels of the crystal, and are obtained finally with the root-mean-square deviation 9 cm -1 . It is suggested that the ligand point charge, covalency and overlap interaction are weaker a little than charge interpenetration and coulomb exchange interaction for Yb 3+ in GdScO 3 . The obtained Hamiltonian parameters can be used to calculate crystal field energy levels and wave functions of Yb:GdScO 3 to analyze the mechanism of the luminescence or laser.

Abstract:Tm,Ho:GdScO3 single crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. Its quality and effective segregation coefficient of crystal were characterized, and spectral properties of crystal (1 0 0) plane were studied. The absorption cross-section of Tm,Ho:GdScO3 at 793 nm is 1.61 x 10(-20) cm(2) and emission cross-section at 2020 nm is 1.39 x 10(-20) cm(2). The laser performance of the crystal by 793 nm LD end-pumped was investigated. The maximum output power of 240 mW was obtained with a slope efficiency of 9.1 % in CW(continuous wave) pump mode. In pulse mode, the maximum average output power of 507 mW was achieved. The maximum slope efficiency of 13.7 % was obtained with 100 Hz and 400 mu s. The laser wavelength was 2096 nm. The beam quality factors M-x(2)/M-y(2) were fitted to be 1.81/1.80. These results indicate that Tm,Ho:GdScO3 crystal is a promising candidate medium for near-infrared laser application.

Abstract:A novel Tm3+: CaY0.65Gd0.35AlO4 (Tm3+: CYGA) disordered crystal was successfully grown for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, using the Czochralski method. The optical properties and laser performance were investigated in details. Owing to the addition of Gd3+ ions to the Tm3+: CYA crystal, the Tm3+: CYGA crystal possesses a wider Tm3+ absorption and emission spectra compared with those of the Tm3+: CYA and Tm3+: CGA crystals. In particular, the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the emission spectra at approximately 2 µm for the Tm3+: CYGA crystal was 221.3 nm, which is larger than those of the Tm3+: CYA (200 nm) and Tm3+: CGA (151 nm) crystals. Furthermore, an efficient laser operation of the Tm3+: CYGA crystal at 1974 nm was achieved for the first time, with a slope efficiency of up to 31.5 %, corresponding to a maximum output power of 810 mW. The results show that Tm3+: CYGA disordered crystals have the potential to be applied in ∼ 2-μm broadband tunable lasers and ultra-short pulse lasers.

Abstract:Detailed polarized spectral properties of a 0.685 at. % Nd3+:Sr3Y2(BO3)(4) crystal grown by the Czochralski method have been investigated, including the absorption cross section, the emission cross section, and the fluorescence lifetime. The anisotropy of the spectral properties in different polarized directions was discussed thoroughly. The absorption and emission spectra of Nd3+ are found to be in-homogeneously broadened due to its internal disordered lattice. Additionally, the CW laser operation at 1.06 mu m was also demonstrated for the first time. The maximum output power of 905 mW was achieved, with corresponding optical conversion efficiency of 10.8% and slope efficiency of 12.8%. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Yb3+/Tm3+ co-doped Gd3Ga5O12 single crystal with a dimension of Phi 30mm x 20mm was grown successfully by Czochralski method. The absorption spectrum was recorded at room temperature and used to calculate the absorption cross-section. Based on the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory, we obtained the three intensity parameters and spectral parameters of this crystal, such as the line strengths, oscillator strengths, radiative probabilities and radiative lifetimes as well as the fluorescent branching ratios. Room temperature fluorescence spectra and luminescence decay curves were recorded. The energy transfer between Yb3+-Tm3+ was observed and the mechanism was discussed. The stimulated emission cross-section of the F-3(4) -> H-3(6) transition was calculated by the Fiichtbauer-Ladenburg (F-L) equation. The potential laser gains for this transition were also investigated. This crystal is promising as a tunable infrared laser crystal at 2.0 mu m.

Abstract:Tm3+-doped CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 single crystal was successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The crystal structure, polarized absorption spectra and polarized emission spectra of Tm:CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 crystals were investigated. By using the Judd–Ofelt approach, the intensity parameters Ω2,4,6, spontaneous transition rate, branching ratios and radiative lifetimes were calculated. Diode-end-pumped continuous-wave Tm:CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 lasers have also been investigated by establishing a simple and compact plane-concave cavity with four differently coated output couplers. Four different lasing wavelengths at about 2029 nm, 2000 nm, 1966 nm and 1888 nm have been achieved with maximum output power and slope efficiency of (1.98 W, 15.1%), (5.89 W, 46.2%), (6.92 W, 54.9%) and (5.54 W, 44.7%), respectively. The results in regard to the broad emission spectra and good laser performance show that the Tm:CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 mixed crystal could be very promising for broadband tunable and/or femtosecond ultrafast laser generation in the important 2-μm spectral region.

Abstract:The growth and spectroscopic properties of a novel Tm:CaGdAl3O7 crystal were studied for the first time. The XRPD pattern shows that the crystal belongs to the tetragonal system with the cell parameters of a = b = 7.7125 Å and c = 5.0683 Å. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were recorded and the spectroscopic performance was systematically analyzed with the Judd–Ofelt theory. The absorption cross-section was calculated to be 0.542 × 10−20 cm−2 at 788.5 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 36 nm. The FWHM of fluorescence spectrum was up to 228 nm, and the determined emission cross-sections were 0.439 × 10−20 cm2 at 1817 nm and 0.388 × 10−20 cm2 at 1940 nm, respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of 3F4 energy level in Tm:CaGdAl3O7 crystal was found as 4.42 ms. The gain cross-section at the wavelength over 1800 nm becomes positive when the population inversion level reaches 20%. The experimental results show that Tm:CaGdAl3O7 is a promising crystal that can be used in ∼2 μm tunable and ultrashort pulse lasers.

Abstract:High optical quality Dy3+-doped CaLaGa3O7 (abbreviated as Dy: CLGO below) crystal was grown successfully by the Czochralski technique along the (0 0 1) orientation. The lattice parameters of the as-grown crystal were obtained by Rietveld refinement to its XRD pattern. The electronic structures including band structure and density of state (DOS) were calculated by using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The spectroscopic characteristics of Dy: CLGO are investigated, with special attention to the yellow emission that could be pumped directly by the rapidly developed blue GaN LD. Based on the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory, the intensity parameters from the measured line strengths were determined. The J-O parameters were used to predict radiative transition probabilities, radiative lifetime and branching ratios for various excited levels of the Dy: CLGO crystal. The absorption cross-sections of Dy: CLGO at 453 nm are calculated to be 0.14 × 10−20 cm2 and 0.11 × 10−20 cm2 for π- and σ-polarizations, respectively. Meanwhile, Dy: CLGO exhibits strong yellow emission at 574 nm corresponding to the transition 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 with stimulated emission cross-sections of 3.88 × 10−21 cm2 and 3.42 × 10−21 cm2 for π- and σ-polarizations, respectively. The relatively long fluorescence lifetime (565 μs) indicates a high laser efficiency of the crystal. All results suggest that Dy: CLGO crystal could be a promising candidate for yellow laser at 574 nm pumped by blue GaN LD.

Abstract:High optical quality La0.09Gd0.91Ca4O(BO3)(3) and Nd0.03La0.08Gd0.89Ca4O(BO3)(3) crystals, grown by Czo-chralski (Cz) pulling method, were investigated for their nonlinear optical (NLO) and laser properties. These crystals were found to possess moderate birefringence (0.0320 at 1064 nm), wide transparency (320-2300 nm) and large effective nonlinear effects (d(eff) similar to 1.2 pm/V), which were suitable for green laser generation. The second-harmonic-generation (SHG) phase matching (PM) properties, including PM curve, deff, angular acceptance and walk-off angle were investigated. Both of the calculations and experiments have indicated that the 1064 nm optimum PM direction which has maximum d(eff) (similar to 1.2 pm/V) and SHG conversion efficiency (57.1%) locate in the second octant, i.e. (113.5 degrees, 48.6 degrees). Pumped by the 0.8 mu m AlGaAs laser diodes (LD), the self-frequency-doubling (SFD) performance of Nd0.03La0.08Gd0.89Ca4O(BO3)(3) crystal was evaluated, where as much as 115 mWgreen light at 546 nm was obtained with a (113 degrees, 48.9 degrees)-cut, 6 mm long and uncoated Nd0.03La0.08Gd0.89Ca4O(BO3)(3) sample. Abstract:A high-quality Er3+-doped (Gd1−xLux)3Ga5O12 (Er: LGGG) laser crystal with a size of Φ 36 × 45 mm3 was successfully grown by the Czochralski (Cz) method for the first time. The effective segregation coefficient of Er3+ was determined to be 0.97, close to 1, and, thus, the uniform high-quality Er: LGGG crystal can be grown. In addition, the thermal and spectroscopic properties of Er: LGGG were investigated. Based on the measured characteristics, the Er: LGGG crystal has a huge potential for use in the 3.0 μm mid-infrared laser because of its outstanding optical quality, extraordinary thermal conductivity and stable structure.

Abstract:Ho3+-doped CaY0.9Gd0.1AlO4 single crystal was successfully grown by the Czochralski technique for the first time. The polarized absorption spectra, polarized luminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curve of the crystal were investigated at room temperature. The spectroscopic parameters are calculated based on Judd–Ofelt theory, the values of Ω2,4,6 were calculated to be 3.16 × 10−20 cm2, 3.93 × 10−20 cm2, 0.91 × 10−20 cm2, respectively. The Ho:CaY0.9Gd0.1AlO4 crystal exhibits strong emission at 2013 nm for π- and 2032 nm for σ-polarizations with stimulated emission cross section of 6.64 × 10−20 cm2 and 1.90 × 10−20 cm2, respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of the 5I7 level was measured to be 6.60 ms. The continuous-wave (CW) laser operation of Ho:CaY0.9Gd0.1AlO4 crystal around 2 μm was demonstrated.

Abstract:A Sm3+/Ce3+ co-doped Gd0.1Y0.9AlO3 laser crystal was successfully grown and analyzed. The use of Ce3+ co-doping for enhancing the Sm3+: 4G5/2 → 6H7/2 yellow emission was investigated in the Gd0.1Y0.9AlO3 crystal for the first time. In comparison to Sm3+ single-doped Gd0.1Y0.9AlO3 crystal, the Sm3+/Ce3+ co-doped Gd0.1Y0.9AlO3 crystal had a higher luminescence branching ratio (48.9%) and luminescence emission cross section (5.01×10−20 cm2) corresponding to the laser transition 4G5/2 → 6H7/2 of Sm3+. It was found that the introduced Ce3+ greatly enhanced the 602 nm emission by increasing the population of the laser excited level Sm3+: 4G5/2. These results suggest that Sm3+/Ce3+ co-doped Gd0.1Y0.9AlO3 crystal may be an attractive host for developing solid state lasers at around 602 nm laser applications.

Abstract:A bulk Nd:LaCa4O(BO3)(3) (Nd:LaCOB) single crystal with the low Nd3+-doping concentration (-0.5 at%) was grown by Czochralski (Cz) method. Its powder X-ray diffraction, Nd3+ ions doping concentration, polarized transmittance and emission spectra, and fluorescence lifetimes were tested. Based on the Judd-Ofelt theory, the spectral parameters of Nd:LaCOB (Nd3+,-0.5 at %) crystals including polarized absorption and emission cross sections, spontaneous transition probability, fluorescence branching ratio, theoretical fluorescence lifetime and intensity parameters (omega(2), omega(4) and omega(6)) were systemically investigated. The calculated radiation lifetimes were compared with the experimental values, resulting in a quantum yield of 33%, which was the highest record among all the Nd:ReCOB (Re: Y, Gd, La1- xGdx) type crystals. The spectral properties of Nd:LaCOB were found to be better than those of Nd:YCOB and Nd:GdCOB crystals, especially in polarized absorption and emission cross sections. The self-frequency-doubling (SFD) angles were calculated according to the main fluorescence peaks of Nd:LaCOB (Nd3+,-0.5 at%) crystals such as 1041 nm, 1060 nm, 1090 nm and 1102 nm, which would be excited and frequency doubled into blue-green, green, yellow-green and yellow lasers. All the results showed that the Nd:LaCOB crystals had potential applications in the field of laser and SFD.

Abstract:In the process of studying newfangled phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diodes (pc-wLEDs), some basic and important objectives of phosphor, i.e., high chemical/thermal stability, color rendering index (CRI), and low correlated color temperature (CCT), should pass muster simultaneously. Herein, for the first time, a series of photoluminescence (PL) color-tunable single-phase Ca3Y(GaO)3(BO3)4: Dy3+/Sm3+/La3+ (CYGB: Dy/Sm/La) phosphors with good dispersivity, crystallinity, and size uniformity have been designed and synthesized via a facile solid-state reaction method. Structurally, based on XRD and Rietveld refinements, the tendentious occupations of Dy/Sm/La on the Y3+ site with a 9-coordinated number (CN) over other cationic sites are in line with the facts that the ionic radius and charge difference of Dy/Sm/La are much closer to Y3+ in 9-CN than Y3+ in 7-CN and Ca2+ in both 9- and 7-CN. Spectrally, thanks to the “cool” white PL from 4f–4f transitions of Dy and red-emitting from Sm, polychromatic PL including “warm” white light with high efficiency could be realized in CYGB: Dy/Sm via the regulation of doping content and energy transfer (ET). Intriguingly, the “abnormal” phenomena of zero-thermal-quenching in the range from room temperature (RT) to 573 K were observed, probably owing to the synergistic effects of electron–phonon coupling, ET, and structural defects. Moreover, by tridoping La3+ to legitimately adjust the site environments, the PL of both Dy/Sm could be further tuned because they all include hypersensitive transitions that are closely related to the crystal field environment. Finally, as a proof-of-concept fabrication, the pc-wLED assembled by a combination of the composition-optimized CYGB: Dy/Sm/La and an n-UV LED chip via remote “capping” packaging shows attractive performances, indicating its potential as an efficient phosphor for n-UV wLEDs.

Growth and spectroscopic investigations of the 1.5 at.% Er:GSGG laser crystal

Abstract:The 1.5 at.% Er3+ doped gadolinium scandium gallium garnet (GSGG) laser crystal with high optical quality was successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The structural parameters were obtained by x-ray Rietveld refinement. A high crystalline quality of Er:GSGG was determined by x-ray rocking curve. The spectroscopic parameters of Er3+ ion were calculated and analyzed using the Judd–Ofelt theory. Furthermore, the stimulated-emission cross-section spectra were investigated for the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transitions at 1.5–1.6 µm, which indicates the great potential of Er:GSGG for multi-wavelength emission at 1.5–1.6 µm. The larger emission cross-section and long fluorescence lifetimes around 0.55 and 0.67 µm mean that the 1.5 at.% Er:GSGG crystal is beneficial for green and red laser generation. Meanwhile, the intensity of the emission spectra was compared between the 1.5 at.% and 2.0 at.% Er-doped GSGG. The roles of cross-upconversion, cross-relaxation and the excited-state absorption process were discussed in the 1.5 at.% Er:GSGG crystal for generating visible and 1.5–1.6 µm lasers.

Abstract:We present the growth, spectroscopy, continuous-wave (CW) and passively mode-locked (ML) operation of a novel "mixed" tetragonal calcium rare-earth aluminate crystal, Yb3+:Ca(Gd,Y)AlO4. The absorption, stimulated-emission, and gain cross-sections are derived for π and σ polarizations. The laser performance of a c-cut Yb:Ca(Gd,Y)AlO4 crystal is studied using a spatially single-mode, 976-nm fiber-coupled laser diode as a pump source. A maximum output power of 347 mW is obtained in the CW regime with a slope efficiency of 48.9%. The emission wavelength is continuously tunable across 90 nm (1010 - 1100 nm) using a quartz-based Lyot filter. With a commercial SEmiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror to initiate and maintain ML operation, soliton pulses as short as 35 fs are generated at 1059.8 nm with an average output power of 51 mW at ∼65.95 MHz. The average output power can be scaled to 105 mW for slightly longer pulses of 42 fs at 1063.5 nm.

Abstract:In order to explore and develop new crystal materials in the 2.7—3 μm band, Pr, Yb, Ho:GdScO 3 crystal are successfully grown by the Czochralski method for the first time. X-ray diffraction measurement is performed to obtain powder diffraction data. Raman spectra aree measured and the vibration peaks are identified. The transmission spectrum, emission spectrum and fluorescence lifetime of Pr, Yb, Ho: GdScO 3 crystal are also characterized. The center of the strongest absorption band is at 966 nm with a half-peak width of 90 nm, which comes from the transition of Yb 3+ : 2 F 7/2 → 2 F 5/2 . The absorption cross section of Yb 3+ is calculated and the values at 966, 973, 985 nm are 0.62×10 –20 , 0.60×10 –20 and 0.58×10 –20 cm 2 respectively. The maximum emission peak is at 2850 nm and the half-peak width is 70 nm, the lifetimes of Ho 3+ : 5 I 6 and 5 I 7 are measured to be 1094 μs and 56 μs respectively, and the emission cross section at 2850 and 2935 nm are calculated to be 3.6×10 –20 cm 2 and 1.21×10 –20 cm 2 , respectively. Comparing with Yb, Ho: GdScO 3 crystal, the absorption peak of Yb 3+ and the emission peak are both broadened, which are related to the increase of crystal disorder. The lifetime of the lower energy level decreases significantly. Furthermore, the energy transfer mechanism between Ho 3+ and Pr 3+ is analyzed, and the energy transfer efficiency between Ho 3+ : 5 I 7 and Pr 3+ : 3 F 2 + 3 H 6 is calculated to be 99%, which is higher than those in other materials. All the results show that Pr, Yb, Ho:GdScO 3 crystal is an excellent 2.7–3 μm laser material, and is easier to achieve laser output than Yb, Ho:GdScO 3 crystal.

Abstract:This paper reports the growth and spectral assessments of Yb3+ ion doped MgMoO4 (Yb3+: MgMoO4) crystal grown by the TSSG method. Polarized spectral properties of Yb3+: MgMoO4 crystal, including absorption and emission cross-sections, absorption FWHM and fluorescence lifetime, have been investigated. The laser performance parameters beta(min), I-sat and I-min have also been evaluated. All the investigated results show the Yb3+-doped MgMoO4 crystal is expected as a promising candidate for ultrashort pulse and tunable lasers.
