Abstract:Development of low‐cost, high‐performance and high atomic economy electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and investigation of the related catalytic mechanism are of crucial importance yet such tasks are still challenging. Herein, we synthesized a highly dispersed N, P co‐doped carbon frames (NPCFs) anchored with Fe single atoms (SAs) and Fe2P nanoparticles (NPs) coupling catalyst by a novel in situ‐doping‐adsorption‐phosphatization strategy for electrocatalytic ORR. The Fe SAs–Fe2P NPs/NPCFs‐2.5 catalyst shows a superior ORR activity with high E1/2 of 0.78 and 0.91 V, low Tafel slope of 63.8 and 45.4 mV·dec–1, and large JK of 2.46 and 14.47 mA·cm–2 at 0.8 and 0.85 V in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 0.1 M KOH, respectively, which surpasses most of the non‐noble metal ORR catalysts, and is comparable to that of Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations reveal a synergistic effect that the existence of Fe2P weakens the adsorption of ORR intermediates on active sites and lowers the reaction free energy. The doped P atoms with a strong electron‐donating ability would elevate the energy level of Fe‐3d orbitals and facilitate the adsorption of O2. The active Fe atoms in Fe SAs‐Fe2P NPs/NPCFs‐2.5 exist in a low oxidation state and are less positively charged, which serve as an electron reservoir capable of donating and releasing electrons thus improving the ORR activity. Operando and in situ characterization results indicated that the atomically dispersed Fe–N4/Fe–P coupled active centers in Fe SAs–Fe2P NPs/NPCFs‐2.5 catalyst is characteristic of different catalytic mechanisms in acidic and alkaline media. In 0.5 M H2SO4, the Fe–P site as an active site for the O2 adsorption–activation process, which is beneficial to the formation of P–Fe–O–H* intermediate species, and the O–H bond in P–Fe–O–H* can cleave to form spillover H species, which can in turn combine with another N4–Fe–O–H* intermediate species, accelerating the ORR progress. By contrast, in 0.1 M KOH, the Fe–P sites are not involved in the ORR process, but the doping of P atoms alters the electronic structure of the Fe–N4 center, thereby improving the ORR activity. This work proposes a novel idea for constructing coupling catalysts with atomic‐level precision and provides a strong reference for the development of high‐efficiency ORR electrocatalysts for practical application.
