Abstract:A carbonization of metal-organic frameworks is utilized to enhance the electrochemical performance of SiO as a promising anode for Li-ion batteries. The metal-organic frameworks are synthesized by a facile and green method. The carbon-coated SiO (SiO@C composite) is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), autosorb surface analyzer, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) attaching an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The electrochemical properties of SiO@C composite and mechanically milled SiO as anodes are investigated for lithium-ion batteries. The SiO@C composite shows superior performance compared with the milled SiO, including enhanced rate capability and better capacity retention.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is considered as the most promising candidate for anode materials in the next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Regulating the morphology and structure of Si plays a vital role in alleviating the volume expansion and improving electronic conductivity. Herein, an ingenious core-shell structure (denoted as CoMOE-D@Si@C) is synthesized by depositing Si uniformly on the pyrolytic metal-organic frameworks (MOF5) via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and then encapsulated with a carbon shell. The CoMOF-D@Si@C exhibits excellent rate capability and cycle performance, which delivers a high-rate capability of 957 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1) and a reversible capacity of 1493 mAh g(-1) after 400 cycles. In particular, the capacity is maintained at 648 mAh g -1 after 1200 cycles at a high current density of 4 A g(-1) with a rapid increase of the Coulombic efficiency (CE) to 99.8% after only 5 cycles and the average CE (99.7%) in the whole cycling at 4 A g(-1) . Profiting from the outer carbon shell, uniform Si deposition and inner porous pyrolytic MOF structure, this architecture can maintain structural stability and provide constructive conductivity during cycling processes. The superior electrochemical performance of the CoMOF-D@Si@C composite makes it a promising anode material for LIBs. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Metallic lithium (Li) has attracted much attention as anode for high-energy-density batteries because of its ultrahigh specific capacity (3860mAhg−1) and the lowest electrochemical potential. Uncontrolled Li dendrite growth gives rise to serious safety hazards with poor cycle life and low coulombic efficiency. Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets modified electrodes are designed to inhabit Li dendrite growth with improved electrochemical performance. Due to high surface area and plentiful polar surface functional groups, MOF nanosheets possess enhanced electrolyte uptake capabilities and improved adhesive interactions with Li-ions, which facilitates well-distributed homogeneous Li ionic flux. A remarkable coulombic efficiency of 98% for over 180 cycles at a current density of 2.0mAcm−2 and a cycle capacity of 1.0mAhcm−2 is achieved. This study may pave a way for obtaining high-performance metallic Li batteries with a wide variety of MOFs-based materials.

Abstract:A simple yet powerful one-pot strategy is developed to prepare metal-organic framework-coated silicon nanoparticles via in situ mechanochemical synthesis. After simple pyrolysis, the thus-obtained composite shows exceptional electrochemical properties with a lithium storage capacity up to 1050 mA h g(-1), excellent cycle stability (>99% capacity retention after 500 cycles) and outstanding rate performance. These characteristics, combined with their high stability and ease of fabrication, make such Si@MOF nanocomposites ideal alternative candidates as high-energy anode materials in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The ultra-high theoretical capacity of silicon-based (Si) materials makes them promising anode materials for high energy density lithium-ion batteries. Unfortunately, the dramatic volume change (∼300%) and low electrical conductivity of silicon have severely hindered the commercial use of silicon anodes. Silicon suboxide (SiO x ) is one of the ideal candidates for high energy density batteries due to its reduced swelling and lower cost as compared to silicon. However, it remains a huge challenge to address the low conductivity, low (initial) coulombic efficiency and apparent volume effects of SiO x . In this paper, SiO x /Co@C composite anode materials loaded with metal Co nanoparticles were uniformly and efficiently prepared by using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) as silicon source and Co-MOF as Co source via molecular self-assembly strategy. The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that the catalytic action of embedded Co nanoparticles had activated the silico-oxygen bond of SiO x and the irreversible product Li 2 O, thereby improving the initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and enhancing the reversible capacity. At the same time, the metal Co with mechanical rigidity and electrical conductivity alleviated the volume fluctuation during alloying and improved the charge transfer capacity and ion transport rate of the composite. When compared with SiO x @C anodes, SiO x /Co@C-600 composites showed higher initial CE, superior cyclic stability and good rate performance. In particular, the successful matching of the anode with the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode in full cell systems validated the possibility of its practical application. This work provides important insights into the application of Si-based materials in lithium-ion battery electrode materials and the development of high energy density batteries.

Abstract:The electrochemical performance of silicon (Si) anode can be improved by transition metal silicide materials because of their excellent electronic conductivity. However, the synthesis of transition metal silicide with controllable nanostructure remains a challenge. Herein, the porous Si/NiSi2/C nanoparticles were synthesized successfully by magnesiothermic co-reduction of silica-coated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The MOFs is used as a sacrificial template because of its controllable size and morphology. The as-prepared Si/NiSi2 was uniformly embedded in amorphous carbon materials derived from MOFs. The NiSi2 and carbon can act as a buffer matrix and facilitate the electronic transmission of Si/NiSi2/C. The nanometer size and porous structure of Si/NiSi2/C can accommodate volume expansion during the cycling process. As a result, the as-prepared Si/NiSi2/C electrode delivered a specific capacity of 1243.6 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1. This facile strategy provides the possibility to develop transition metal silicide materials from MOFs for high-performance Si-based anode.

Abstract:Various techniques have been developed to mitigate the volume expansion of silicon-based materials and improve their conductivity in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Here, we have synthesized a novel cobalt and nitrogen co-doped double carbon coated silicon/carbon/metal-organic framework (MOF) multi-core yolk-shell like mesoporous materials through sol-gel and MOF self-template methods. The structure and morphology of the sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The results show that the prepared composite is made up of multiple phenolic resin-based carbon-coated silicon embedded in MOF-derived carbon framework. The composite exhibits excellent lithium storage performance with a reversible capacity of 1107 mA h g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) after 100 cycles and cycling stability capacity of 852 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) over 300 cycles. The improved electrochemical performance could be attributed to double carbon coated multi-core yolk-shell mesoporous structure in conjunction with cobalt and nitrogen co-doping, which can improve electrical conductivity and the cycle performance of silicon. Moreover, as the electrolyte blocking layer, the double-layer carbon coating is beneficial to the formation of stable solid electrolyte interphase films, and empty space inside the MOF-derived carbon multi-core yolk-shell structure can effectively mitigate the volume change of silicon during the lithiation/delithiation process.

Abstract:Silicon and its oxides remain the most promising and alternative anode materials for increasing the energy density of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high theoretical specific capacity and suitable operating voltage. However, the severe volume change effect and rapid capacity attenuation problem make the design and advancement of silicon-based anode materials still challenging for state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery technology. Fortunately, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely attracted as emerging materials in energy storage and conversion due to their tunable properties, outstanding morphological and structural advantages. The application of MOF and its derivatives to recast the energy storage properties of silicon and its oxides anode materials is an intriguing approach, where the silicon and its oxide can be embedded into MOF and its derivatives to generate the unique composite anode materials. Besides, the stability of the electrode materials can be significantly improved by adjusting and maintaining the composition and pristine structure of the MOF. However, it is still a great challenge that how to make MOFs better coated on silicon-based materials and what type of MOFs to choose for modification. Concentrating on the above key points, this review paper focuses on the application of MOFs and their derivatives in improving the rational design of silicon and its oxides for Li-ion battery anodes, comparing the advantages and disadvantages of different preparation methods, and discussing the lithium storage mechanism of as-synthesized MOF-modified silicon-based materials, which shows practical significance for the subsequent research in energy storage systems.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have many promising applications in energy and environmental areas such as gas separation, catalysis, supercapacitors, and batteries; the key toward those applications is controlled pyrolysis which can tailor the porous structure, improve electrical conductivity, and expose metal ions in MOFs. Here, we present a systematic study on the structural evolution of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks hybridized on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during the carbonization process. We show that a number of typical products can be obtained, depending on the annealing time, including (1) CNTs wrapped by relatively thick carbon layers, (2) CNTs grafted by ZnO nanoparticles which are covered by thin nitrogen-doped carbon layers, and (3) CNTs grafted by aggregated ZnO nanoparticles. We also investigated the electrochemical properties of those hybrid structures as freestanding membrane electrodes for lithium ion batteries, and the second one (CNT-supported ZnO covered by N-doped carbon) shows the best performance with a high specific capacity (850 mA h/g at a current density of 100 mA/g) and excellent cycling stability. Our results indicate that tailoring and optimizing the MOF-CNT hybrid structure is essential for developing high-performance energy storage systems.

Abstract:Modification of Si anode with various coating matrixes is a promising strategy to resolve the unstable solid electrolyte interphase issues. However, the complex preparation process and inherently weak interaction between Si and other matrixes impede its practical application. Inspired by the metallurgical process of aluminum, an aluminosilicate matrix was prepared as coating layer on the surface of Si nanoparticles after heat treatment. Si nanoparticles with a uniform native oxide layer were used as seed crystals for the adsorption of aluminum hydroxide. The strong symbiosis and bond between alumina and silica, such as mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) or kaolin (Al2O3·SiO2·2H2O), provide homogeneous and durable contact coating layer. The as-produced Si/SiO2·Al2O3 composite delivers a charge capacity of 1440 mAh·g−1 at 100 mA·g−1 and remains 879 mAh·g−1 at 3 A·g−1. After 200 cycles, the capacity retention remains high at 76%. The enhanced properties were ascribed to SiO2·Al2O3 synergistic composite coating layer, which could hinder the interfacial side chemical reaction and buffer volume change of Si.

Abstract:Silicon has been deemed to be one of the most prospective anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, low lithiation potential, and bountiful resources. However, its industrial application can still be impeded by its unsatisfied electrochemical performance, especially poor cycling performance caused by larger volume expansion (about 300%). Herein, we synthesize the silicon-based composites by embedding nano-silicon in Co-based metal–organic frameworks derived nitrogen-doped carbon/cobalt/Co-catalyzed carbon nanotubes porous framework (/Co/CNTs). In this architecture, the high conductivity NC/Co/CNTs framework with stable structure owing to the existence of Co can not only significantly improve the electrical conductivity to improve the reaction activity of Si, but also effectively buffer the volume expansion during electrochemical reaction. Hence, the advanced /Co/CNTs exhibits a high reversible specific capacity (895 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1) and excellent cycling performance (758 mAh g−1 after 800 cycles at 1 A g−1). Insight into the kinetics reveals that capacitive charge-storage mechanism plays an important role in boosting Li+ storage beneficial from the high specific surface area and accelerated charge transfer. This work propounds a simple route to prepare the Si/C hybrids with improved electrochemical performances for being of great application potential towards lithium-ion batteries anode.

Abstract:A novel strategy was employed to introduce a carbon layer on Si particle to overcome the intrinsic poor electrical conductivity and significant volume change. The carbon layer was fabricated by forming polyphosphazene coating through a facile precipitation polymerization method, followed by carbonization. As a result of formation of core-shell structure, the Si anode exhibited improved cycling stability (740mAh/g remained after 100 cycles) and rate capability (300mAh/g at a rate 2C). In addition, 99% coulombic efficiency was remained after 100 cycles.

Abstract:In this paper, we employ lithium-conducting covalent-organic-framework (COF) as the coating layer for silicon (Si) nanoparticles, which serve as artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) for Si electrode. The COF coating layer reduces the electrolyte decomposition, thus the coulombic efficiency (CE) and cycling stability of the Si electrodes are dramatically improved. Additionally, the superior lithium-ion conductivity of COF can enhance the lithium-ion transportation kinetics of Si electrode. COF coated Si presented a high specific capacity of 1864 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 2000 mA g(-1) and high capacity retention of more than 60% after 1000 cycles.

Abstract:Silicon (Si), a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries, usually suffers from low capacity retention and poor rate performance due to its huge volume change issue and low electronic conductivity. The synergistic effect brought by the composite of carbon, metal silicide, and silicon is proven to be an effective measure to enhance the performance of silicon-based anodes. Herein, Cu3Si-modified silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) encapsulated within SiO x and hollow carbon shell (M-Si@H-C) are designed and constructed by an electroless deposition and pyrolysis process, which delivers high specific capacity (1150 mAh g–1 at 0.21 A g–1 and 450 mAh g–1 at 8.4 A g–1) and long cycling stability (86.3% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1 A g–1). The nanostructure and formation mechanism of the M-Si@H-C is elucidated by employing X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The enhancement to the lithium storage performance of the nanostructure is clarified on the basis of the microstructure investigation and electrochemical determination.

Abstract:A nanocomposite anode material consisting of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived hollow SiO(x)nanoparticles wrapped in three dimensional (3D) nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel (N-GA) has been fabricated through a facile three-step approach, involving MOF-template inducting, self-assembly and nitrogen-doping, freeze-drying and thermal treatment process. The hollow SiO(x)nanoparticles with an average size of 100-160 nm are distributed on 3D N-GA. Such nanocomposites possess a 3D porous structure with a BET surface area as high as 426.3 m(2)g(-1). In this nanostructure, the N-GA's property of interconnected porous network enables it to provide pathways for rapid electron transfer and Li(+)transport, while the MOF-derived hollow SiO(x)nanoparticles with void space can accommodate the volume change during a lithiation/delithiation process. As a result, high rate capability (675 mA h g(-1)under 50 C) as well as long-life cycling stability (1233.2 mA h g(-1)under 10 C, 86% capacity retention over 500 cycles) is achieved.

Abstract:Nanostructured silicon-based materials with porous structures have recently been found to be impressive anode materials with high capacity and cycling performance for lithium-ion batteries. However, the current methods of preparing porous silicon have generally been confronted with the requirement for multiple steps and complex synthesis. In the present study, porous silicon with high surface area was prepared by using a high yielding and simple reaction in which commercial magnesium powder readily reacts with HSiCl3 with the help of an amine catalyst under mild conditions. The obtained porous silicon was coated with a nitrogen-doped carbon layer and used as the anode for lithium-ion batteries. The porous Si-carbon nanocomposites exhibited excellent cycling performance with a retained discharge capacity of 1300 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles at 1 A g(-1) and a discharge capacity of 750 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 2 A g(-1) after 250 cycles. Remarkably, the Coulombic efficiency was maintained at nearly 100 % throughout the measurements.

Abstract:A novel porous structure MnO-SiOx @C composite has been designed and prepared as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries through scalable spray pyrolysis and a subsequent annealing process. XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman, and BET measurements indicate that the MnO-SiOx @C composite displays a spherical mesoporous structure with SiOx particles, embedded in the porous MnO structure combined with carbon coated on the surfaces. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the mutual segregation of the heterogeneous oxides of MnO and SiOx during delithiation and the buffer composition region at the origin of uniform carbon layers and abundant nanopores. In addition, the new phase Mn2SiO4, which is formed in the MnO-SiOx @C composite after 800 ºC, can act as the joint between MnO and SiOx to restrain the strain force originating from the volume change during the charge and discharge process. As a result, the obtained MnO-SiOx @C composite exhibits significantly enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of high Coulombic efficiency, excellent rate capability and good cyclability.
