Abstract:Signal-induced elevation-dependent (SIED) ranging biases have been observed with GPS SVN-49 and BDS-II signals. Several means and models of compensating this SIED bias have been proposed for standalone positioning, while for a satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) exposed to an unexpected SIED anomalous signal, the wide-area differential (WAD) process will be invalid or even worsen and the conventional architecture of signal quality monitoring (SQM) might be confused to let the anomalous signal evade the detections. This paper clarifies the potential hazardous effects of induced to an SBAS by a SIED signal anomaly. Based on the ideas of some existing models in describing the SIED anomalies, a generic onboard-reflection threat model (GOR-TM) is derived for the design and evaluation of SQM algorithms of SBAS’s in addressing the potential SIED anomalies. Furthermore, a methodology of determining the practical threat space for a particular signal is also designed, including the initialization of threat space, the introduction of the concept of virtual equivalent reference station to account for the bias carried by the WAD corrections of an SBAS, the procedure of calculating the maximum differential pseudorange errors corresponding to the initialized threat space, and the reduction to obtain the practical threat space. GPS L1 C/A signal is utilized in simulations, and this proposed methodology is also applicable to other GNSS signals.
