Abstract:Landslide monitoring can characterize subsurface water percolation, hydrogeological conditions, and slope stability over time. In other words, the aim of the time-lapse method is to a better understanding of water circulation and its effect within the landslide body. The presence of water-saturated materials is one of the main triggering factors on the potential of sliding mass in Xiaoshan district, Hangzhou city, China. In this paper, spatiotemporal changes of the water content are monitored by two applied geophysical methods: 2D time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (TLERT) and 2D P-wave time-lapse seismic refraction tomography (TLSRT). Time-lapse electrical resistivity is performed by the Wenner alpha array due to its ability to display high vertical resolution of subsurface images and signal-to-noise ratio. Time-lapse seismic refraction tomography is conducted as individual models corresponding to time-lapse electrical resistivity images. The validity of the method is examined by analyzing travel time curves and seismograms. Two geophysical methods were conducted along the two profiles spread out over the failure surface. Specific observations are a disparity of characterization of the water contents between the two dates scheduled for August and November 2018. Using electrical resistivity tomography monitoring, the landslide body and mass were characterized by increasing the resistivity related to more evaporation, boulders, and tree roots on the top surface and decreasing in greater depth in the wet season. In this study, time-lapse seismic refraction tomography represents the presence of high seismic velocity values in unsaturated materials, which can violate the Biot–Gassmann relationship. Good agreement between the results of the two geophysical methods can illustrate the landslide geometry and possible sliding hazard by characterizing the moisture content and changes of clay content over two different periods. In this paper, the material compositions are supported by previous borehole data.

Abstract:Remote sensing of water parameters and flow dynamic progress is of critical importance to water environment observation. Underwater acoustic tomography technology uses multiple sound stations to construct distributed sensing network for large-scale measurement, which has big superiority in water parameter observation compared with fix-point measurement. Water parameter variation progress can be monitored with an underwater acoustic tomography sensing system. This article develops a grid-averaged trust-region method for water parameter detailed profiling with coastal acoustic tomography (CAT) systems. A remote sensing experiment was conducted with five CAT systems from February 28 to March 7, 2022, in the Huangcai Reservoir in Changsha, China. Four CAT systems were deployed in the same position with different depths of sound transceivers, and another CAT station was set 650 m apart. Water temperature and flow current reconstruction results along the sound propagate Section were analyzed with the trust-region method and compared with the temperature data acquired with the temperature sensor. The accuracy and feasibility of this method are verified with observation results.

In order to develop detailed subsurface images for archaeological prospection, a full 3-D ERT is indispensable, particularly when complex subsurface heterogeneity exists. In our study, the 3-D surveys with electrode configurations of pole-pole, pole-dipole, dipole-dipole and wenner were carried out with 128 electrodes in Ancient city Liangzhu site, Zhejiang Province, China, to evaluate the applicability and the effectiveness of full 3-D ERT with different arrays for archaeological purpose. Besides, the grid was arranged at 16 by 8 electrodes with a fix spacing of 0.5 m. The results show that the pole-dipole array is a good choice in the shallow 3-D EHT survey for archaeological prospection, as it can satisfy the characterize of water-filled ditches on the surface and the buried ancient wall. Abstract:Near surface geophysical methods have been used extensively as non-invasive and cost-effective methods to characterize subsurface geological properties over the past two decades. Since these approaches are able to illustrate the temporal and spatial changes of geological conditions, they are applied for the characterization of landslide zones. Landslides are one of many natural disasters that cause life and property losses. Landslide mechanisms are affected by topsoil materials, bedrock geometry, and subsurface water content. This paper presents study results for a landslide area located in the Xiaoshan district in Hangzhou City, China. The 2D seismic P-wave refraction tomography (SRT) and 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) methods were used to characterize the landslides in this area. The ERT technique was applied using four lines over and outside of the landslide scar using the Wenner electrode configuration. The SRT study was performed along four longitudinal profiles coincident with the ERT lines. Samples from two boreholes, located on two different profiles, and SEM-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) testing provided calibration for of ERT and SRT measurements. The results of the combined techniques have defined the layers associated with sand and high clay content as well as the geometry of failure surfaces.
Enhancing Remote Sensing of Water Temperature Using Acoustic Tomography and 3-D-RPS Algorithm

Abstract:Remote sensing of water temperature and flow dynamics is of paramount importance for water environment management. Coastal acoustic tomography (CAT), an innovative method for remote sensing in underwater environments, utilizes the dual-way travel time of multiple sound paths to reconstruct the underwater temperature field. However, the transmission experiments are susceptible to data noise caused by station drift and inaccuracies in travel time extraction. In this study, a three-dimensional Rousseeuw Phase-Space (3-D-RPS) thresholding algorithm is proposed to remove outliers in the travel time data obtained from Huangcai Reservoir using three CAT systems on September 16, 2020. Additionally, this work includes grid partitioning based on sound path propagation, calculation of sound path lengths, and reference transmission time within each grid, construction of a sparse matrix, and inversion of the two-dimensional temperature field and its associated inversion error. The accuracy and applicability of the proposed method are confirmed through a comparison with data obtained from temperature–depth (TD) sensors. The results demonstrate the precision and suitability of this approach. By effectively mitigating the impact of station drift and extraction accuracy issues, this method provides a reliable temperature field estimation.
Application of Electrical Resistivity Tomography to Monitor the Dewatering of Vertical and Horizontal Wells in Municipal Solid Waste Landfills

Abstract:The performance of vertical and horizontal wells is usually evaluated using water level wells or piezometers in landfills. In this study, pumping tests in vertical and horizontal wells were performed at the Changan and Tianziling landfills, respectively. During the pumping tests, the leachate level drawdown around the wells and the resistivity of the surrounding waste were both measured to investigate the feasibility of applying electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) to monitor the dewatering in landfills. It was found that the resistivity rho of the waste samples drilled from the Tianziling landfill decreased as volumetric moisture content theta increased, and the relationship could be fitted with Archie's law (rho = rho(w)a theta(-m)). For waste samples with the same theta, rho tended to increase as the depth of the samples increased. It was because the waste at deeper layers experienced longer degradation and tended to have greater proportion of inert particles like cinder and dust. During a vertical well pumping test in the Changan landfill, the resistivity of waste on the right side of the well increased by 10% to 30%. The distribution of areas where resistivity increased was heterogeneous. During two horizontal well pumping tests in the Tianziling landfill, the areas where resistivity increased were distributed in an ellipse around one well and were horizontally distributed around another well. The resistivity of waste near the two wells increased by 4% to 18%. According to the ERT testing results, the influence radii of the two wells were estimated as 38.7 m and 33.2 m, respectively. These were close to the values (i.e., 42.1 m and 34.8 m, respectively) obtained through leachate level testing results. Artifacts produced by the inversion process were both found in the ERT images of vertical and horizontal well pumping tests. The combined use of ERT with other hydrogeological monitoring methods can improve the understanding of draining effects by vertical and horizontal wells in landfills.
Analysis Of Integrating Ert Data Of Different Array Types: Simulation Study And Observations On An Archaeological Site

Abstract:Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), as a highly efficient method in the field of electrical exploration, has been developing quickly in recent decades. However, there are still some places for improving in many theoretical areas and technical aspects. For example, the inversion data from different array types have different features, which could create various geo-electric image results and bring some difficulties to interpretation. In this paper, the method for integrating inversion data from different array types to improve the precision and resolution of geo-electric image results is adopted. The simulation and observation of 2-D ERT from the test site integrated data of Wenner and Schlumberger arrays were studied, since these two configurations have different characteristics for the sensitivity of resistivity variation. The observation of 3-D ERT from the site integrated data of pole-dipole and dipole-dipole arrays was tested, because the inversion data have different depth values. The simulation and experimental results show that the method discussed in this paper improves the precision of resistivity imaging.
Imaging hydrological dynamics in karst unsaturated zones by time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography

Abstract:The hydrodynamics of karst terrain are highly complex due to the diverse fractures and reservoirs within limestone formations. The time delay between rainfall events and subsequent flow into reservoirs exhibits significant variability. However, these hydrological processes are not easily visualized in karst topography. Subsurface geophysics, specifically 2D time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), provides an effective method for studying the relationships between hydrological and geophysical features. In our research, we adopted ERT in the Karst Critical Zone (KCZ) to visualize specific karstic zones, including cave galleries, water storage reservoirs, wetting fronts, soil layers, and potential preferential flow paths down to a depth of 20 m. To capture spatial and seasonal variations in resistivity, we presented a comprehensive approach by combining sixteen inversion models obtained between February 2020 and September 2022 above the Villars Cave in SW-France-a well-known prehistoric cave. We used a multi-dimensional statistical technique called Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering (HAC) to create a composite model that divided the synthetic ERT image into eight clusters representing different karst critical zones. The ERT image clearly visualized the cave gallery with high resistivity values that remained consistent throughout the seasons. Our analysis revealed a close seasonal relationship between water excess and resistivity variations in most infiltration zones, with time delays increasing with depth. The karst reservoirs, located at significant depths compared to other clusters, displayed sensitivity to changes in water excess but were primarily affected by fluctuations in water conductivity, particularly during summer or dry periods. These findings have significant implications for predicting rainwater infiltration pathways into caves, thereby assisting in the conservation and preservation of prehistoric caves and their cultural heritage.

Imaging Rainfall Infiltration Processes with the Time-Lapse Electrical Resistivity Imaging Method

Abstract:Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) was carried out continuously for 10 days to map the subsurface resistivity distribution along a potentially hazardous hillslope at the Jieshou Junior High School in Taoyuan, Taiwan. The reliability of the inverted resistivity structures down to about 25 m depth was examined with synthetic modeling using the same electrode arrangements installed on land surface as in field surveys, together with a DOI (depth-of-investigation) index calculated from the ERI data. The subsurface resistivity distribution is consistent with results from well logging. These ERI recordings were taken daily and provided highly resolved imagery of the resistivity distribution underground and illustrated the dynamical fluid-flow behavior due to heavy rainfall infiltration. Using Archie's law, the resistivity distribution was transformed into a map of relative water saturation (RWS), which is strongly correlated with the rainfall infiltration process. We then found that the averaged RWS is significantly correlated with daily precipitation. Our observations indicate that time-lapse ERI is effective in monitoring subterraneous rainfall infiltration; moreover, the preferential flow paths can be delineated according to the changes in averaged RWS derived from the ERI data.
Study about Water Infiltration Process in Rock Block Using High Density Electrical Resistivity Tomography

Abstract:The monitoring of water infiltration process in the porous medium is an important work of hydrology and environmental sciences.In this paper,we investigated the infiltration process in a rock block of laboratorial scale by high density electrical resistivity tomography.First,the corresponding numerical model of the electrical field was constructed.The forward problem of ERT was solved with finite element method.Then,the 2-D electrical resistivity was inversely got from the data of ERT survey using the algorithm based on the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method.The calculated results represented the spatial variation of water in the rock column.The spatial and temporal variations of electrical resistivity in the rock column show that the infiltration process in the is asymmetric,faster at the near side area of rock column than in the central area.The results also suggest the existence of tiny fractures at the near surface area of the rock block.

Abstract:Electrical Resistivity Tomography(ERT) can describe geologic bodies by varying electrode spacing in detail in different scales,which is widely applied in engineering,geology and so on in recent years.In this paper,the relationship between electrical resistivity and hydraulic conductivity is researched based on the similarity of the current flow field and seepage flow field,and the basic principles used to calculate the hydraulic conductivity with the resistivities obtained through ERT is introduced briefly.Then the method is applied to the ERT measure data in Daxin and Tangqiao to get the hydraulic conductivity.Finally,after compared with the results of pumping tests and sample collecting analysis in the two places respectively,the hydraulic conductivity is proved to be reasonable.

Abstract:Fractures greatly impact the hydraulic and mechanical characteristics of fault zones; thus, the hydraulic characteristics of single fractures are critical for better understanding the hydrology of regional fault zones. A number of geophysical methods are applicable on the in situ field measurement scale. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is a sensitive and nondestructive approach capable of imaging the spatiotemporal resistivity variations within a fractured medium. In this study, we conducted two water infiltration monitoring experiments along in situ single fractures within tight rock using the ERT method. First, we constructed a three-dimensional (3-D) variable-density model subdivided into tetrahedra identical to the in situ fracture and verified the feasibility and accuracy of the fracture-tracking ERT (FT-ERT) through numerical simulations. Second, based on the verification of FT-ERT, the fracture resistivity variations were obtained, and the spatial and temporal variations in electrical resistivity inside the fracture were used to delineate the internal water infiltration fronts. Finally, we depicted the infiltration fronts, calculated the water infiltration velocity, and estimated the fracture permeability. The electrical response characteristics of the fractured medium revealed obvious preferential flow during infiltration. Moreover, the results indicate that the internal structure of field fractures is discontinuous and heterogeneous and that FT-ERT monitoring can not only effectively capture the spatial structures of subsurface fractures but also provide quantitative data for assessing the water conductivity of discontinuous media with strong spatial anisotropy and heterogeneity. Studying the internal hydraulic characteristics of fractures is particularly valuable for understanding the water-conducting and water-resistive characteristics of fault zones.
Spatial and Temporal Monitoring of Salt Solution Infiltration Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography

Abstract:The infiltration process of salt solution is investigated in a laboratory scale rock block using electrical resistivity tomography.First,an infiltration experiment with distilled water and salt solution is made on a rock column,and the infiltration process is monitored with a multi-channels high-density electrical resistivity tomography system.Then,an electrical resistivity tomography for the rock column is constructed.The electrical resistivity distributions at different planes reflects the spatial variations of salt solute in the rock block.The results indicate that actively monitoring salt solution infiltration process in a sample scale rock block with high-density electrical resistivity tomography is feasible.The electrical resistivity images indicate that the infiltration in the rock block is an asymmetrical process.
Landslide Monitoring in Southwestern China Via Time-Lapse Electrical Resistivity Tomography

Abstract:The dynamic monitoring of landslides in engineering geology has focused on the correlation among landslide stability, rainwater infiltration, and subsurface hydrogeology. However, the understanding of this complicated correlation is still poor and inadequate. Thus, in this study, we investigated a typical landslide in southwestern China via time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (TLERT) in November 2013 and August 2014. We studied landslide mechanisms based on the spatiotemporal characteristics of surface water infiltration and flow within the landslide body. Combined with borehole data, inverted resistivity models accurately defined the interface between Quaternary sediments and bedrock. Preferential flow pathways attributed to fracture zones and fissures were also delineated. In addition, we found that surface water permeates through these pathways into the slipping mass and drains away as fissure water in the fractured bedrock, probably causing the weakly weathered layer to gradually soften and erode, eventually leading to a landslide. Clearly, TLERT dynamic monitoring can provide precursory information of critical sliding and can be used in landslide stability analysis and prediction.
Archaeological Survey under Complex Surface Conditions by Electrical Resistivity Tomography

Abstract:Summary When archaeological surey, some times the surface conditions are very complicated such as topographic relief, uneven surface medium and so on. These create challenges for geophysical archaeological survey. With the ability to adapt and anti-interference, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) was considered. With the help of GPS, manual drilling, partial excavation, etc, the ERT applied study was conducted.The high precision horizontal positioning and accurate elevation information could be obtained by GPS. Then the study of inversion with terrain was carried out to solve the topographic relief problem. The floor plan could also be got. The surface medium information was recorded on the scene.So the influence of different surface medium study could be conducted. Use manual drilling and/or partial excavation to verify the accuracy of ERT detection results. The study result show that the ERT method can effectively adapt to the complex surface conditions, and provide useful information to archaeological experts.

Abstract:In past applications of electrical resistivity survey, users commonly focussed on the Earth's subsurface to locate water table, bedrock, etc. Nowadays, this electrical resistivity method is used by engineers for shallow subsurface investigations. This paper presents the integration of soil mechanics properties with electrical resistivity tomography methods and recommends the proper selection of resistivity array (survey planning) and appropriate inversion constraint parameters (data processing) that are able to deliver optimum resistivity tomography model results. This study identifies the empirical correlations of the soil's properties such as shear strength parameters, moisture content, void ratio, porosity, saturation degree, and Atterberg's limits with the electrical resistivity values (resistivity tomography models). A total of 11 undisturbed clayey sand soil samples was collected at different distances, depths, and times and were tested under both infield and laboratory conditions during the slope monitoring period. The soil mechanics properties of the soil samples were obtained right after the electrical resistivity survey was made. It is shown that the electrical resistivity values are greatly influenced by the soil mechanics properties. Thus, the electrical resistivity (4-D) survey using the optimized Wenner-Schlumberger array (high data density) is capable of reliably enhancing the conventional outcome of the Earth's subsurface investigation.

Abstract:The common hydrogeological concepts assume that water mostly enters and flows in fractured and karstified media through preferential pathways related to discontinuities. But it is difficult to locate discontinuities and even more to relate those to possible or effective water routes, particularly when soil or scree covers near surface features. When and where does water flow underground? How fast? Are we able to monitor the infiltration processes? A unique large scale Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) surface based time-lapse experiment was carried out in fractured and karstified carbonate rock during a typical Mediterranean autumn rainy episode (230mm of rain over 17 days). 120 ERT time-lapse sections were measured over the same profile during and after this event (30 days). The gradient array was chosen for his robustness and rapidity. The site is covered by typical Mediterranean forest and is a good example of the surface conditions found in Mediterranean karst. There is no major karstification features (i.e. cave, sinkhole) or major tectonic accident (i.e. fault). In a previous paper, several commercial and research inversion software were tested on this dataset. This processing highlighted some limitations in inversion process. At the actual stage, apparent resistivity data provides insight about recharge/discharge processes that are almost valuable as the inverted resistivity results. Due to his quality, the availability of this unique dataset acquired under natural conditions will allow to the scientific and engineer community exploring advances and limits of ERT approach and to test new software or new data processing strategy.
The anisotropic properties of rock resistivity during saturation and desaturation processes revealed by electrical resistivity tomography

Abstract:With electrical resistivity parameter, it is convenient and effective to analyze the anisotropic properties of fractured rocks. However, only resistivity data obtained at individual points were used for this analysis now. Based on water saturation and desaturation experiments made on I sandstone block and simultaneous monitoring with high density electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), in this paper we investigated the possibility of using resistivity images from the ERT to study the anisotropic properties of the rock, and analyzed the responses of rock resistivity measured at different directions to the water saturation and desaturation processes. The results indicate that as the ERT has a advantage of being able to multi-directional imaging and monitor, on the basis of a analysis of resistivity images obtained at different directions, it is possible to characterize the spatial distribution patterns of the rock structure, and illustrate the anisotropic properties of the spatial distribution patterns in the rock resistivity changes during water saturation and desaturation processes.

Abstract:The tomography is a new nondestructive detection technique developed in recent years; it has special advantages of rich information, accuracy and visibility. So it has been playing more and more important role in detecting hidden danger of earth-rock dams. Based on the discussion of the theory of electrical resistivity tomography, a series of resistivity tomography nondestructive detcction tests has been carried out in Longfengshan Reservoir Dam. The seepage channels in Longfengshan Reservoir Dam has been found out; meanwhile, it has been approved that this method is reliable via applied to nondestructive detection in earth dams. The local tests indicate that the resistivity tomography nondestructive detection technique may be applied to detecting hidden dangers of earth-rock dams.
