Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots(QDs) are new inorganic fluorophores that are currently being investigated for use as luminescent biological probes in biology due to its unique optical properties.The fluorescence excitation and emission properties,quantum yield,photobleaching characteristic and fluorescence lifetime of quantum dots are described in detail.Particularly,this review summarizes the recent advances of quantum dots in developmental biological applications,which mainly include cellular labeling,in vivo animal and tissue imaging,multiplexed assaying and photodynamic therapy.Moreover,the potential toxicity and challenges of quantum dots in biological application are discussed.Finally,the future prospects for promising applications of quantum dots in biology are also briefly presented.

Abstract:More and more attention has been drawn on nano-materials in the application of molecular imaging and targeted cancer therapy. Quantum dots, due to their rich surface chemical properties and bright stable fluorescence, have been used as a new type of nano-probes and widely used in molecular, cellular and vivo biological imaging. In recent years, many inspiring achievements have been obtained in the study on quantum dots surface modification and biological imaging in cell and animals. In this article, current status and the latest developments of the study and the application are reviewed.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) are a group of semiconducting nanomaterials with unique optical and electronic properties. They have distinct advantages over traditional fluorescent organic dyes in chemical and biological studies in terms of tunable emission spectra, signal brightness, photostability, and so forth. Currently, themajor type of QDs is the heavymetal-containing II-IV, IV-VI, or III-V QDs. Silicon QDs and conjugated polymer dots have also been developed in order to lower the potential toxicity of the fluorescent probes for biological applications. Aqueous solubility is the common problem for all types of QDs when they are employed in the biological researches, such as in vitro and in vivo imaging. To circumvent this problem, ligand exchange and polymer coating are proven to be effective, besides synthesizing QDs in aqueous solutions directly. However, toxicity is another big concern especially for in vivo studies. Ligand protection and core/shell structure can partly solve this problem. With the rapid development of QDs research, new elements and new morphologies have been introduced to this area to fabricate more safe and efficient QDs for biological applications.

Abstract:As an excellent fluorescent nanomaterial, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have the properties of small molecular weight, small particle size, high fluorescence stability, no optical flicker, wide excitation spectrum, continuous, long adjustable emission wavelength, good biocompatibility and low toxicity. At present, it has been widely used in biological detection, in vivo and in vitro imaging, drug delivery and diagnostic drugs. This review presents a broad overview of recent progress in synthesis, optical properties, and biomedical applications of CQDs. The synthesis methods of CQDs are first introduced, followed by an extensive discussion of its purification, surface functionalization methods and stability. Furthermore, the optical properties of CQDs are presented, with an emphasis on photoluminescence mechanism and the relationship between synthesis conditions and optical properties. This review's much focus is given to the biomedical applications of CQDs, including detection, imaging (in vivo and in vitro imaging) and drug delivery (targeted therapy, photodynamic and photothermal therapy, and immunological and gene therapy). Finally, we cover the key issues and future prospects/advances that CQDs still have to deal with in the biomedical sector as well as possible solutions.

Abstract:Silicon quantum dots (Si QDs) are usually smaller than 10 nm. They have drawn much attention from researchers because of their novel electronic and optical properties caused by quantum confinement effect and surface effect, which are different from those of bulk silicon materials. In recent years, Si QDs have been applied in the field of optoelectronics because of their novel electronic and optical properties, and a series of research progress have been achieved. The electronic and optical properties of Si QDs are overviewed. The use of Si QDs in optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes, solar cells and photodetectors is introduced in detail. The performance of different types of Si QDs in optoelectronic devices is analyzed as well. It is believed that if continuous efforts in the research on Si QDs are made, Si QDs will play a crucial role in the innovation of optoelectronic devices in the future.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted widespread attention due to the significant advantages in optical and environmentally friendly performance. Herein, we focused on the development of CQDs synthesized by advanced molecular fusion technology. Meanwhile, the applications of CQDs on various target cell imaging were also demonstrated. Our summary looks back to the feasible preparation strategy of CQDs and forward into their potent applications in early diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the future.

Abstract:Some representative preparation methods for quantum dots,which include precipitation,sol-gel,solvo-thermal method,the application in the biomedicine,material-science,etc were summarized in this paper.Quantum Dots can also be called semiconductor nanocrystal.It consists of Ⅱ-Ⅵ or Ⅲ-Ⅴ cluster elements,and a kind of nanocrystal with the dimension of 1～100nm.It has the properties of stability and dissolubility.Present,semiconductor quantum dots have received more and more attention in different fields.Their content not only relates to physics and chemistry but also already becomes an cross-subject.As a streamlined fluorescence material,they have many advantages compared to traditional organic dye,and the abundant color is the most virtue.They can be used as fluorescence probe in the organism system.Beacause of these excellent opitics characteristics,quantum dots have wide application in biochemistry,molecular biology,drug screening and so on.

Abstract:As light-emitting nanocrystals, quantum dots (QDs) have created a new realm of bioscience by combining nanomaterials with biology. They also have been a major focus of research and development during the past decade, which will profoundly influence future biological as well as biomedical research. In recent years, near-infrared (NIR) quantum dots have emerged in analytical applications, especially for in vitro and in vivo imaging. The impetus behind such endeavors can be attributed to their unique optical and chemical properties, with size-tunable light emission, high photo stability, and manifold fluorescence colors. In this review, we focus on fluorescent imaging with near-infrared (NIR) quantum dots (QDs) both in vitro and in vivo, and the advantages of QDs and potential problems to their use in practical biomedical applications. The ultimate targets aim at decreasing the cytotoxicity of QDs and the future outlook of QD applications in biomedical fields.

The new emerging QDs with improved biocompatibility further promote their biological applications. In this review, we first briefly introduce the prevalently used QDs and their preparation and bioconjugation approaches. Then we summarize QDs-based fluorescent biosensing for proteins and nucleic acids, and QDs-based applications in cellular and in vivo targeting and imaging. Last but not the least, we envision the potential QDs-based applications in future perspectives.

Abstract:Luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals, also known as quantum dots (QDs), are generally composed of II-VI and III-V elements. Due to their quantum confinement of charge carriers in tiny spaces, QDs show some unique and fascinating optical properties, and are characterized as sharp and symmetrical emission spectra, high quantum yields, broad absorption spectra, good chemical and photo-stability and size dependent emission wavelength tunability. Recently, QDs have been successfully used as new fluorescent tags in many biological and biomedical fields, and will become a new promising tool in biomedical studies, clinical diagnostics, drug delivery and photodynamic therapy. In this review, firstly, the methodology of QDs preparation was introduced, which included organic synthesis, aqueous synthesis and microwave assisted aqueous synthesis. Secondly, some procedures for the QDs bio-conjugation with biomarkers were described. And then, some key applications of QDs were summarized, which mainly covered biomedical imaging, immunoassay, DNA hybridization, and photodynamic therapy. Finally, future prospects were discussed.

Abstract:Quantum dots-hydrogel composites are promising new materials that have attracted extensive attention due to their incomparable biocompatibility and acceptable biodegradability, leading to enormous potential applications for various fields. This review summarizes the recent advances in quantum dots-hydrogel composites with a focus on synthesis methods, including hydrogel gelation in quantum dots (QDs) solution, embedding prepared QDs into hydrogels after gelation, forming QDs in situ within the preformed gel and cross-linking via QDs to form hydrogels. In particularly, biomedical applications as bioimaging, biosensing and drug delivery are also reviewed, followed by a discussion on the inherent challenges of design optimization, biocompatibility and bimodal applications and the prospect of the future development. These results will guide the development of quantum dots-hydrogel composites and provide critical insights to inspire researchers in future. Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have generated enormous excitement because of their superiority in chemical inertness, biocompatibility and low toxicity. Due to quantum confinement and edge effects, GQDs have excellent properties, attracting extensive attention from scientists in the fields of chemistry, physics, materials science, biology, and other interdisciplinary sciences. In this review, we aim to present a comprehensive view on the synthesis of GQDs for biological applications. We highlight potential methods like acid oxidation, hydrothermal and solvothermal reactions, microwave-assisted methods, electrochemical oxidation, as well as pyrolysis and carbonization for the successful preparation of GQDs. Meanwhile, four representative types of biomedical application based on GQDs, bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, and antimicrobial materials, are introduced and discussed in detail. This work will be very useful for quickly gaining knowledge and experience for synthesizing various GQDs, and developing advanced strategies for creating novel functional GQD-based nanomaterials for further applications in biomedicine, materials science, analytical science, and optical nanodevices.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) with near-infrared fluorescence (NIR) are an emerging class of QDs with unique capabilities owing to the deeper tissue penetrability of NIR light compared with visible light. NIR light also effectively overcomes organism autofluorescence, making NIR QDs particularly attractive in biological imaging applications for disease diagnosis. Considering latest developments, Ag2S QDs are a rising star among NIR QDs due to their excellent NIR fluorescence properties and biocompatibility. This review presents the various methods to synthesize NIR Ag2S QDs, and systematically discusses their applications in biosensing, bioimaging, and theranostics. Major challenges and future perspectives concerning the synthesis and bioapplications of NIR Ag2S QDs are discussed.
