Abstract:Tin disulfide (SnS2) has been recognized as a promising nonprecious photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution using solar energy. Herein, sulfur vacancies are introduced to SnS2 photocatalyst by doping Cu for improving photocatalytic efficiency. The generation of sulfur vacancies enables formation of a new donor level near the conduction band minimum (CBM), resulting in the higher separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and increased carrier density. Additionally, a theoretical study reveals that incorporating Cu and sulfur vacancies reduces the work function of SnS2, making it easier for photogenerated electrons to react with water. As a result, the hydrogen generation rate of sample 5%Cu/SnS2-x reaches 1.37 mmol h(-1) g(-1) under visible-light, far exceeding (more than 6 times) that of pure SnS2 nanoplates. This work not only reinforces the new understanding of defect engineering in SnS2-based photocatalysts but also provides valuable guides in rationally designing new efficient photocatalysts.
Zinc Vacancy-Promoted Photocatalytic Activity and Photostability of ZnS for Efficient Visible-Light-driven Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Zinc sulfide is a superior photocatalyst for H-2 evolution, whereas the wide bandgap restricts its performance to only UV region. In this work, zinc vacancy (V-zn) defects are successfully introduced into ZnS via adding sodium sulfide as sulfur source during the hydrothermal reaction. The defective ZnS with different amount of zinc vacancies were employed as catalysts for the examination of vacancy-dependent catalytic activity toward photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. Fluorescence emission spectra and XPS results confirm that existence of abundant zinc vacancies on ZnS. These zinc vacancies exhibit remarkable effects on modifying the electronic structure of ZnS as shown in UV-visible absorption spectra and Mott-Schottky plots. Zinc vacancies can raise valence band (VB) position that weaken the oxidative capacity of the holes to protect Zn-deficient ZnS from photocorrsion. And electrochemical and photo-electrochemical experiments also demonstrate that the charge separation and the electrons transfer are more efficient with the introduction of the Zn vacancies in ZnS. The zinc-deficient ZnS-2.5 with optimum amount of Zn vacancies shows superior photo catalytic activity for H-2 evolution that reaches 337.71 +/- 3.72 mu mol h(-1) g(-1) under visible-light irradiation and also exhibits a much higher photostability. The intrinsic modify by self-defects might be a potential strategy for design novel photocatalysts with photocorrosion stability and visible-light activity in photocatalysis proton reduction.

Abstract:Introducing vacancies and element doping are effective approaches to boost photocatalytic activities of metal sulfides. In this work, sulfur vacancies and nickel dopants were simultaneously introduced into ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets (ZIS NSs) to explore their synergistic role in promoting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The S vacancies can trap the photo-generated electrons, lower the conduction band minimum (CBM), improve the photo-generated charge reduction capacity and prolong the carrier lifetime. Meanwhile, Ni dopants cause an increase in the Fermi level (EF), which ensures a higher charge density and an effective carrier separation efficiency. The optimum hydrogen evolution rate of sample Ni0.05-VS-ZIS reaches 8.91 mmol·g-1·h-1 under visible light due to the synergistic effect of the S vacancies and Ni dopants.

Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution over Mo-Doped ZnIn2S4 with Sulfur Vacancies

Abstract:The introduction of impure atoms or crystal defects is a promising strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of semiconductors. However, the synergy of these two effects in 2D atomic layers remains unexplored. In this case, the preparation of molybdenum-doped thin ZnIn2S4-containing S vacancies (Mo-doped Sv-ZnIn2S4) is conducted using a one-pot solvothermal method. The coordination of Mo doping and S vacancies not only enhances visible light absorption and facilitates the separation of photogenerated carriers but also provides many active sites for photocatalytic reactions. Meanwhile, the Mo-S bonds play function as high-speed channels to rapidly transfer carriers to the active sites, which can directly promote hydrogen evolution. Consequently, Sv-ZnIn2S4 with an optimized amount of Mo doping exhibits a high hydrogen evolution rate of 5739 μmol g−1 h−1 with a corresponding apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 21.24% at 420 nm, which is approximately 5.4 times higher than the original ZnIn2S4. This work provides a new strategy for the development of highly efficient and sustainable 2D atomic photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Ternary ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) chalcogenide is regarded as a promising candidate for photocatalytic hydrogen production performance; however, its activity is limited by the low separation efficiency and poor migration ability of photoexcited charge carriers. Herein, porous ZnIn2S4 photocatalysts with confined sulfur vacancies were successfully fabricated, alleviating the above issues that impair the hydrogen evolution rate. Due to the pore structure, the charge transfer diffusion pathway is greatly shortened. Furthermore, the sulfur vacancies can serve as electron trapped centers, which greatly suppresses the recombination of photogenerated carriers. As a result, the porous ZnIn2S4 with confined sulfur vacancies exhibits an optimum hydrogen evolution rate of up to 1537.65 +/- 118.65 mu mol h(-1) (61 506 +/- 4746 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)), which is approximately 6 times higher than that of pristine ZIS, and achieves an apparent quantum efficiency of 56.53% at 420 +/- 15 nm. This work highlights the synergistic effects of pore structure and vacancy structure for enhancing H-2 evolution performance, and further provides new ideas to design and synthesize novel photocatalysts for highly efficient solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Constructing a S-scheme heterojunction with tight interface contact and fast charge transfer is beneficial to improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Herein, a unique one-dimensional (1D)/two-dimensional (2D) S-scheme heterojunction containing 1D Sb 2 S 3 nanorods and 2D ZnIn 2 S 4 with affluent sulfur vacancies (denoted as Sv-ZnIn 2 S 4 @Sb 2 S 3 ) was designed. The introduced sulfur vacancy can promote the effective adsorption of H + for the following interfacial hydrogen-evolution reaction. Furthermore, the larger contact area and stronger electron interaction between Sb 2 S 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 effectively inhibits the recombination of photo-generated electron–hole pairs and abridges the migration distance of charges. As a result, the optimal Sv-ZnIn 2 S 4 @Sb 2 S 3 sample achieves H 2 evolution activity of 2741.3 mol·h −1 ·g −1 , which is 8.6 times that of pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 and 3.0 times that of the Sv-ZnIn 2 S 4 samples. Based on the experimental result, the photo-reactivity S-scheme mechanism of hydrogen evolution from water splitting with Sv-ZnIn 2 S 4 @Sb 2 S 3 is proposed. This work provides an effective method for developing S-scheme heterojunction composites of transition metal sulfide with high hydrogen evolution performance.

Zn‐Vacancy Engineered S‐Scheme ZnCdS/ZnS Photocatalyst for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Abstract:Vacancy defects engineering is a valid strategy to enhance the separation efficiency of photo‐generated charges. Herein, a zinc vacancy mediated S‐scheme ZnCdS/ZnS composite derived from ZnCdS/MOF‐5 was constructed in‐situ through the sacrificial reagent of Na2S/Na2SO3 aqueous solution in visible‐light irradiation. The MOF‐5 converted to ZnS (ZnS−VZn) with abundant zinc vacancies which were proved by the XPS and PL results. ZnS−VZn has two‐photon absorption performance, which immensely enhanced the visible light absorption capacity for the photocatalysts. The photo‐generated electrons of ZnS−VZn on the Zn‐vacancy defect would regroup with the holes in the valence band (VB) of ZnCdS via ohmic contact which is induced by Zn‐vacancy defects. Therefore, the photoexciton of ZnCdS can be able to separate effectively and eliminate the useless electrons and holes. The ZnCdS/ZnS(20) sample revealed an outstanding photocatalytic hydrogen generation rate of 12.31 mmol h−1g−1 with a turnover number (TON) of 64.61, which is about 82.06 and 21.98 times greater than that of neat ZnS−VZn and ZnCdS. This work gives an insight into the design of the zinc vacancy‐engineered S‐scheme photocatalyst of ZnCdS/ZnS for highly efficient photocatalysis.

Abstract:Efficient solar‐to‐hydrogen (STH) conversion through water splitting relies on the development of low‐cost photocatalysts with high photoactivity and stability. ZnxCd1−xS, an emerging metal sulfide (MS) solid solution for STH, possesses several unique advantages, such as a tunable bandgap, abundant elemental constituents, and high stability. Although ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are investigated for hydrogen evolution, their photoactivity still has to be enhanced for commercial applications. Herein, the design concept, crystal and band structure properties, and original photoactivity of ZnxCd1−xS are briefly introduced, and ZnxCd1−xS solutions with different morphologies and structures, modifications, synthesis methods, and vacancy engineering are then discussed. Subsequently, the combination of ZnxCd1−xS and cocatalysts and several representative ZnxCd1−xS‐based heterojunction photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution are reviewed and discussed in detail. Finally, the unsolved issues in the application of ZnxCd1−xS photocatalysts and their potential solutions for developing advanced ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are discussed. ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are reviewed based on the engineering of crystal and band structure, morphology and structure, vacancy, cocatalyst, and heterojunction; recent research progress and the unsolved issues have to be further studied in future research.

Abstract:The surface-abundant active sites, rapid charge transport and associated prolonged electron lifetime, are vital factors that determine efficient photocatalysis. A series of different Zn0.5Cd0.5S solid solutions, including single crystalline Zn0.5Cd0.5S (ZCS), single crystalline Zn0.5Cd0.5S with S vacancies (ZCS-V), twin structured-Zn0.5Cd0.5S (T-ZCS) and twin-structure Zn0.5Cd0.5S with S vacancies (T-ZCSv) are successfully prepared in the present work by manipulating the conditions of the hydrothermal reaction. Experimental results confirm that the optimized T-ZCSv photocatalyst that possesses hexagonal wurtzite/zinc blende (WZ/ZB) twinned structure and rich-surface S vacancies exhibits an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency of approximately 551.74 umol/h. The outstanding performance of the optimized T-ZCSv is attributed to the prolonged electron lifetime and effectively facilitated the separation and migration of charge carriers. These are provided by the periodically aligned WZ/ZB interfacial homojunction that forms type-II staggered energy band structure across the junction and abundant S vacancies that serve as electron trapping sites in the T-ZCSv. Furthermore, T-ZCSv are uniformly dispersed on the 2-Methylimidazole zinc salt [Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8 polyhedron)], which not only could inhibit the aggregation of T-ZCSv, but also expose more active sites for photocatalytic-redox reactions. Finally, a possible charge separation and transfer mechanism explaining the optimum activity of the outperforming sample is proposed on the basis of the results obtained from a range of investigations methods [Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM/HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, Ultra Violet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflection spectroscopy, and Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy]. This study demonstrates the development of a structurally unique Zn0.5Cd0.5S (with twinned structure and S vacancies) and a Zn0.5Cd0.5S-based metal-organic framework (MOF) for photocatalytic applications.

Explosive hydrogen evolution from water splitting without sacrificial agent from the C, N co-doped Zn defective ZnS particle

Abstract:In this study, we designed highly efficient, durable, inexpensive and photo-stable ZnS photocatalysts with Zn vacancies without heterojunctions for hydrogen production. Two types of spherical ZnS nanoparticles of < 10 nm size—ZnS-sulfur powder (S) and ZnS-thiourea (thio)—were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method using sulfur powder and thiourea as the sulfur sources, respectively. The Zn vacancies introduced into the two particles shortened the band-gap and considerably improved the separation of the photogenerated carriers. However, the ZnS-S particles had higher number of Zn vacancies than those in ZnS-thio particles. ZnS-thio particles, which have Zn vacancies with the C and N co-doping, generated more than twice the amount of ∙OH and ∙O2− radicals than the ZnS-S particles, and demonstrated slower electron and hole recombination. The water splitting proceeded faster and more favorably in ZnS-thio particles, and the average hydrogen production rate without sacrificial agents was 176 μmol g–1h−1. ZnS-thio particles also maintained the excellent hydrogen generation efficiency without photo-corrosion even after five consecutive regeneration cycles. This study demonstrates the significant photocatalytic potential of ZnS containing appropriate number of Zn vacancies along with simultaneous complementary N-doping and strong C-doping.

Abstract:Energy band structure and interfacial compatibility of heterojunctions are crucial for photocatalysts in promoting photogenerated charge separation and transfer. Here, a combined strategy of vacancy engineering and quantum effect via a facile phosphating process is reported, for the first time, to modulate the energy band structure and the interface of Zn x Cd1− x S/CoP quantum dots (ZCSv/CoP QDs) heterojunction. The combined experimental and theoretical investigation revealed that phosphating process transformed CoO x QDs to CoP QDs, and more importantly, generated considerable amount of sulfur vacancies in ZCSv. As a result, a Type II ZCSv/CoP QDs heterojunction with compatible interfaces was constructed via in-situ generated P-Zn, P-Cd and S-Co bonds, which facilitated the separation and transfer of the photogenerated charge and thus resulted in a high ability towards hydrogen evolution under visible light (17.53 mmol g−1 h−1). This work provides an effective and adaptable strategy to modulate band structure and interfacial compatibility of heterojunctions via vacancy engineering and quantum effect.

Sulfur vacancy and p-n junction synergistically boosting interfacial charge transfer and separation in ZnIn2S4/NiWO4 heterostructure for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Constructing a p-n heterojunction with vacancy is advantageous for speeding up carrier separation and migration due to the synergy of the built-in electric field and electron capture of the vacancy. Herein, a sulfur vacancy riched-ZnIn2S4/NiWO4 p-n heterojunction (VZIS/NWO) photocatalyst was rationally designed and fabricated for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The composition and structure of VZIS/NWO were characterized. The existence of sulfur vacancy was confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, and electron paramagnetic resonance technology. The p-n heterojunction formed by ZnIn2S4 and NiWO4 was proved to provide a convenient channel to boost interfacial charge migration and separation. By reducing the band gap, the vacancy engineer can improve light absorption as well as serve as an electron trap to improve photo-induced electron-hole separation. Benefiting from the synergy of p-n heterojunction and vacancy, the optimal VZIS/NWO-5 catalyst exhibits dramatically enhanced H2 generation performance, which is about 10-fold that of the pristine ZnIn2S4. This work emphasizes the synergy between p-n heterojunction and sulfur vacancy for enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance.
ZnS/g-C3N4 heterojunction with Zn-vacancy for efficient hydrogen evolution in water splitting driven by visible light

Abstract:Herein, ZnS/g-C3N4 heterojunction structures were prepared by a rapid microwave method with a proper number density of defects such that they become efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. The ZnS/g-C3N4 nanocomposites present a maximum hydrogen production rate of 65.43 μmol h−1 under visible light irradiation, which is ~7 times larger than that of g-C3N4. This good catalyst performance originates from the high efficiency of photoproduced charge separation due to the intimate interfacial contact of ZnS and g-C3N4 in the ZnS/g-C3N4 heterojunctions, as well as the presence of Zn vacancies on the ZnS surface. This work offers a simple strategy for building highly efficient photocatalytic materials for H2 evolution in water splitting.

Abstract:2D-layered ZnIn2S4 nanosheets (ZIS NSs) have been considered as a promising photocatalysts to produce H2. Nevertheless, the carrier recombination of 2D ZnIn2S4 is still severe, which limits its photocatalytic efficiency and practical applications. Herein, the defective ZnIn2S4 nanosheets with S vacancies (DZIS NSs) is fabricated via an easy one-step solvothermal process only by changing the used solvent without a complex physical or/and chemical secondary treatment, which can realize efficient photocatalytic H2 generation. The resultant DZIS NSs show enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and well stability after 5 cycles. And the photocatalytic HER rate of DZIS NSs is up to 5437 μmol−1 h−1 g−1, nearly 2.6 times of pristine ZIS NSs (2090 μmol−1 h−1 g−1). The experimental data suggest that the excellent photocatalytic HER performance of DZIS NSs is attributable to the existence of S vacancies, which can form a S defect energy level under the lower conduction band (CB), offering abundant active sites for hydrogen activation, extending the visible light absorption range and narrowing the bandgap of DZIS NSs. Such defect engineering strategy opens new avenues for other sulfide photocatalysts to further boost photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Solar-powered photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution presents a promising solution to the energy crisis and contemporary environmental challenges. Herein, a Z-scheme ZnS/LaTiO 2 N heterojunction composite, incorporating zinc vacancies, has been successfully synthesized to enable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible-light illumination. The optimized ZnS(V Zn )/LaTiO 2 N composite demonstrates a hydrogen evolution activity 13 times higher than that of individual ZnS(V Zn ). The heterojunction between ZnS and LaTiO 2 N, in conjunction with zinc vacancies, expands the photoresponse spectrum and facilitates the spatial separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. Consequently, this synergy significantly enhances the performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The collaborative action of the Z-scheme heterojunction and zinc vacancies paves the way for innovative approaches in designing future high-efficiency photocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal cocatalysts play a crucial role in facilitating charge separation and promoting surface reaction kinetics in photocatalytic processes. There is an increasing interest in optimizing both the properties of metal cocatalysts and the interactions between cocatalysts and main catalyst. Herein, the smartly-designed tungsten/sulfur vacancies-rich CdS (W/Sv-CdS) photocatalysts with abundant interface W-S bonds were synthesized for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The interface W-S bonds between Sv-CdS and W act as atomic level electron transfer channels, reducing the potential energy barrier for interface charge transfer. The introduction of S-vacancies improves the separation and transport efficiency of charge carriers. As a result, W/Sv-CdS photocatalysts exhibit an enhanced hydrogen evolution rate of up to 56mmolh−1 g−1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 26.5% at 425nm, significantly higher than that Sv-CdS and W/CdS. This work provides reliable guidance for the design and construction of a low-cost, efficient and durable CdS cocatalyst, opening up new avenues and possibilities for energy and environment-related applications.
