Abstract:This work presents a method that can automatically estimate and remove varying continuous background emission for low-cost laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) without intensified CCD. The algorithm finds all third-order minima points in spectra and uses these points to partition the spectra into multiple subintervals. The mean value is then used as a threshold to select the effective points for the second-order minima in each subinterval. Finally, a linear interpolation method is used to realize extension of these effective points and complete fitting of the background using polynomials. Using simulated and real LIBS spectra with different complexities examine the validity of proposed algorithm. Additionally, five elements of five standard cast iron alloy samples are calibrated and improved very well after background removal. Abstract:In laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), fluctuations in laser energy, fluctuations in laser-sample or laser-plasma interactions, and environmental noise cause the acquired spectral to contain different backgrounds. The background has a substantial impact on the analysis of spectra. The aim of this work is to present a method for automatic estimation of diverse spectral backgrounds. The proposed method utilizes the ideas of window functions and differentiation, combined with a piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial (Pchip), to achieve automatic removal of spectral backgrounds. In simulation experiments on background correction, it has been observed that this method outperforms asymmetric least squares (ALS) and Model-free background correction in terms of effectiveness. It exhibits the highest signal-to-background ratio (SBR). This method effectively eliminates the baseline that makes the spectrum elevated and some of the white noise. It also demonstrates stability in the background baseline jumps and in the dense region of the characteristic spectral lines. By using this approach to correct the spectral backgrounds of seven different aluminum alloys, there is a notable enhancement in the linear correlation coefficient between spectral intensity and the concentration of Mg element. In the experiment of measuring Mg concentration in aluminum alloys,the linear correlation coefficients between the predicted and actual concentrations of Mg in aluminum alloys were substantially improved after correction of the spectral background. The values of linear correlation coefficients after background correction using asymmetric least squares (ALS) and model-free methods were 0.9913 and 0.9926, respectively. The correlation coefficients between predicted and actual concentrations of Mg in aluminum alloys were improved from 0.9144 to 0.9943 by using the method proposed in this study. In contrast to ALS and Model-free methods, the proposed method showed more significant improvement on this experiment with higher linear correlation and smaller error. Both simulation and quantitative experimental findings affirm that this method achieves high accuracy and can be effectively employed for background correction prior to quantitative analysis.

Abstract:Improving data quality is important for accurate quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for time and spatial integrated spectra. Based on the characteristics of atomic and ionic lines under various plasma conditions, an algorithm is proposed to reduce the signal fluctuation by combining an atomic line and an ionic line of an element. Using 29 brass alloy samples, the algorithm is verified by comparing the relative standard deviations of the intensities of two copper lines, Cu(i) 406.264 nm and Cu(ii) 217.941 nm, to that of their combined intensity. The noticeable improvement suggests that the proposed algorithm can overcome the signal fluctuation caused by the varying plasma temperature and electron density. Furthermore, using the conventional linear calibration method, the relative standard deviation is reduced from 2.93% (Cu(i) 406.264 nm) and 2.13% (Cu(ii) 217.941 nm) to 1.68% (combined intensity), and the root mean square error of prediction is significantly reduced from 2.24% (Cu(i) 406.264 nm) and 2.43% (Cu(ii) 217.941 nm) to 1.40% (combined intensity).

Abstract:<p>Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is regarded as the future superstar for chemical analysis, but the relatively high measurement uncertainty and error remain the persistent challenges for its technological development as well as wide applications. In the present work, mechanisms of measurement uncertainty generation and basic principle of signal uncertainty and matrix effects impacting quantification performance were explained. Furthermore, methods for raw signal improvement including sample preparation, system optimization, and especially plasma modulation, which modulates the laser-induced plasma evolution process for higher signal repeatability and signal-to-noise ratio, were reviewed and discussed. Different LIBS mathematical quantification methods including calibration-free methods and calibration methods, which were classified into physical-principle based calibration model, data-driven based calibration model, and hybrid model, were discussed and compared. Overall, a framework of quantification improvement strategy including key steps and main way-out was summarized and recommended for LIBS future development.</p>

Abstract:In this work, a new spectral reduction algorithm for the echelle spectrometer was proposed. Unlike conventional approaches, the key concept in this algorithm is to model the spectrogram rather the spectrometer, which makes the algorithm more adaptive to different designs. This algorithm also introduces a dynamic adjusting procedure for generating optimized spectra from laser-induced plasmas. This additional step improved the spectrum stability and absolute line intensity of the spectrum and yielded better quantification performance. Experimental results demonstrated that the quantification results of analyzing aluminum alloy samples were improved using this new algorithm.

Abstract:In our previous work, we found that there was great potential to improve the pulse-to-pulse signal repeatability using a moderate cylindrical cavity confinement. However, the improvement was achieved only with certain experimental parameters; while under other conditions, there was no improvement or even worse repeatability. In the present work, the experimental configuration was redesigned and unexpected uncertainty from the variation of the laser and cavity alignment and the laser ablated aerosols were avoided. With these two improvements, we demonstrated that the cavity can always increase the signal repeatability. In addition, image taken by ICCD verified that the confinement improved the stability of the plasma morphology as expected.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy has become a general-purpose technique, and internal standard calibration is a common method for quantitative analysis. Calibration models should be reconstructed for different systems and application environments. This study presents an efficient procedure in the construction and selection of calibration models for LIBS analysis. The procedure concludes data preprocess, calibration model construction, and concentration calculation. These steps can be programmed without manual intervention. Results of the quantitative analysis of Ni-based alloys using the proposed procedure are presented in this study.Ten elements are calibrated, and most have an average relative standard error of less than 10%.The proposed procedure is an effective process for constructing and selecting calibration models.

Abstract:Fiber-optic laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (FO-LIBS) has been employed in many applications because of the flexibility of optical fiber cable. However, the inhomogeneous elemental distribution of plasmas can cause a self-absorption effect and, hence, significantly hinder the determination of FO-LIBS. Here, to solve this flaw, we took iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) elements in aluminum alloy as examples to investigate the self-absorption reduction and accuracy improvement using spatially resolved FO-LIBS. Spatially resolved FO-LIBS means the spectra were collected at different positions along the direction parallel to the surface of the sample rather than at the center of the plasma. With this method, the self-absorption effect could be improved by selecting different acquisition positions along the X-axis. The root mean square error of cross-validations (RMSECV) for Fe, Mg, and Zn were reduced from 0.388, 0.348, and 0.097 wt. % to 0.172, 0.224, and 0.024 wt. %, respectively. Generally, spatial resolution is an effective method of self-absorption reduction and accuracy improvement in FO-LIBS.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is widely applied in various fields, but accuracy issues limit its further development. Signal uncertainty is the main reason that affects the accuracy of LIBS measurements, but the signal uncertainty caused by different plasmas exhibiting different radiation attenuation rates during the integration time is often neglected. There is a need for a method to correct LIBS signals by quantifying the radiation attenuation rate.RESULTS:In order to reduce the uncertainty due to different plasma attenuation rates, the attenuation rates of the energy level radiation emitted by plasma are described as attenuation coefficients, which are obtained by linearly fitting the logarithm of the time series of line intensities. The calibration curve was corrected by attenuation coefficients for 4 major elements in 7 standard samples. The results showed that the line intensities corrected by attenuation coefficients showed better linearity with elemental concentrations.SIGNIFICANCE:This study is important for improving the accuracy of LIBS measurements, and is also significant for modeling the plasma radiative attenuation of laser-induced plasma, and is expected to be applied to spectrometers that can obtain time series spectra of the same plasma to improve the accuracy of in-situ fast LIBS analysis.

Abstract:Spectral peak overlapping is a basic problem in analytical data processing of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Curve fitting is the typical method of resolving overlapped peaks. For preventing ambiguous fitting, appropriate initial values must be known. The aim of this work was to present a method that could be used to determine appropriate initial values of the curve-fitting method by using fractional differential theory. According to the variation of characteristic points of Lorentzian peaks at different fractional differential orders, parameter estimators were obtained that were used to calculate the initial values of the curve-fitting method. As it is a widely used optimization method, the Levenberg-Marquardt method was used in curve fitting. Simulation and LIBS experimental results proved that the proposed method of the initial value estimation can effectively resolve the overlapped peaks in LIBS data processing.

Abstract:The existence of the self-absorption effect results in a nonlinear relationship between spectral intensity and elemental concentration, which dramatically affect the quantitative accuracy of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), especially calibration-free LIBS (CF-LIBS). In this work, the CF-LIBS with columnar density and standard reference line (CF-LIBS with CD-SRL) was proposed to improve the quantitative accuracy of CF-LIBS analysis by exploiting self-absorption. Our method allows using self-absorbed lines to perform the calibration-free approach directly and does not require self-absorption correction algorithms. To verify this method, the experiment was conducted both on aluminium-bronze and aluminium alloy samples. Compared with classical CF-LIBS, the average errors (AEs) of CF-LIBS with CD-SRL were decreased from 3.20%, 3.22%, 3.15% and 3.01%–0.95%, 1.00%, 1.16% and 1.78%, respectively for four aluminium-bronze alloy samples. The AEs were decreased from 0.66%, 0.70%, 0.89% and 1.30%–0.43%, 0.61%, 0.77% and 0.33%, respectively for four aluminium alloy samples. The experimental results demonstrated that CF-LIBS with CD-SRL provided higher quantitative accuracy and stronger adaptability than classical CF-LIBS, which is quite helpful for the practical application of CF-LIBS.

Abstract:According to that the spectral line broadening of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was lorentz nonlinear function model, using Levenberg-Marquardt (L-M) agorithm to optimally estimate the undetermined parameter in the function, the continuum background radiation and peak position and peak intensity were corrected, and the method of data points automatic extraction for fitting was analysed. Automatic fitting and feature parameter extraction for spectral data of LIBS based on L-M algorithm that was hybrid programming with matrixVB and VB were accomplished,and the result was compared with the origin 7.5 data analysis software which was manual and commonly used and verified its stability and reliability.

Abstract:Calibration-free Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) has caused a heated discussion since it was proposed in 1999, and separate works were presented for better quantitative analysis performance. In this article, we introduce a particle swarm optimization algorithm to search for the actual element number densities in CF-LIBS. The main thought is that the actual element number densities and the experimental spectra can deduce to the same plasma properties such as electron number density n e and number density ratios of different elements. Thus, we need to find the proper actual element number densities based on the experimental spectra. In addition, we present a simplified method to reduce the computation complexity. In the experiment, we focus on the determination of Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Al in the copper matter sample.

Abstract:Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy(LIBS)is a new method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the constituents of a material using plasma spectra produced by the interaction of a strong pulsed laser with the material.In the process of pulsed laser-induced plasma,different laser parameters(en-ergy,pulse width,wavelength),environmental conditions during the detection process and the properties of the material itself have different degrees of influence on the physical mechanism of laser-induced plasma,which in turn affects the results of LIBS quantitative analysis.We review the physical mechanisms of LIBS technology in the current state,including the basic principles of LIBS,the differences in laser parameters,and the physical mechanisms involved in the differences in environmental and material properties.It provides a basis for a deeper understanding of laser-matter interactions and for improving the detection capabilities of LIBS.

Abstract:The wavelet threshold denoising method is an effective noise suppression approach for noisy laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy spectrum. The wavelet threshold denoising method is influenced by several key issues such as the choice of wavelet, the choice of decomposition level, threshold selection, and the choice of thresholding functions. In this paper, the double threshold optimization models of semi-soft thresholding function are established firstly. Next, on the basis of grey relational analysis and Euclid closeness of fuzzy theory, a method of amending the double thresholds of semi-soft thresholding function is put forward. The performance of the proposed method is verified by analysis of both synthetic and observed signals. The limit of detection values are reduced by more than 50% and the signal to noise ratios are improved by a factor of two by using the proposed method.

Abstract:Poor spectral signal stability has always been a key problem limiting the development of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The spatiotemporal inhomogeneity of the plasma between pulses is one of the direct causes of the poor stability of the spectral signal. In this paper, a multi-directional plasma emission light collection method is proposed and its performance is tested. The main idea is to suppress the difference caused by the spatial fluctuation of the plasma by increasing the acquisition range and size. Plasma emission spectra of 11 kinds of mixed lithium ore standard samples are collected with 7 different collection schemes. The experimental results show that the intensity and stability of Ca, Al, and Mn spectral lines collected from multiple directions significantly improved compared to the single lateral and single coaxial collection methods. The mean characteristic spectral intensities are increased by a factor of 4.41 and 6.84, respectively. Meanwhile, the mean relative standard deviation of multiple-directional (1.95%) is much smaller than that of the single lateral (4.31%) or single coaxial (4.16%). The mean coefficient of determination of the univariate linear regression is also improved from RL2 ̄=0.8722 (single lateral) and RC2 ̄=0.8849 (single coaxial) to RC+4L2 ̄=0.9351 (multiple-directional). The innovative and developed system based on LIBS and the multi-directional plasma collection method can effectively improve the detection repeatability and accuracy and has application values in sample measurement.

Abstract:The high-resolution broadband LIBS spectrum is typically acquired using an echelle spectrometer and array detectors. However, the full frame (i.e., echellogram) captured by detector is commonly converted to 1D spectrum for the further analysis, which would both limit the detection speed of LIBS and potentially degenerate the analytical performance. In this work, we propose an echellograms-based analysis method for the quantification of minor metal elements in steel. Two metal elements, Mn and Ti, are chosen to validate the feasibility of the analytical method. The LASSO algorithm is used to build the multivariate regression model using LIBS spectra and echellograms respectively. The analytical performance obtained with the echellograms-based model is compared with that of spectra-based model. The efficiency of the echellograms-based quantitative analysis method is demonstrated with better prediction accuracy and precision. Notably, the echellogram-based regression model involves only tens to thousands of pixels from the echellogram, which can be selectively read out using a CMOS detector. The combination of echellogram-based quantitative analysis method and CMOS detector provides new ideas for high-frequency LIBS detection.
