Abstract:The monitoring of blood pressure is critical for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, existing methods require physical contact between human body and sensor, which are not suitable for long-term monitoring. In this paper, we propose a contactless blood pressure monitoring system, mmBP, using millimeter wave radar. Specifically, we first separate signals reflected from different spatial locations by coherently combining the signals on different antennas. Then, we locate and extract the arterial pulse using convolutional neural network (CNN) assisted template matching with location tracking. Finally, we design an encoder-decoder neural network to derive the blood pressure information from the extracted signal. Experimental results on 20 subjects show that the measurement deviation rate is 9.00% and 3.69% for systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system.

Abstract:Pulse signals can serve as important indicators of one’s cardiovascular condition. However, capturing signals with stable morphology using radar under varying measurement periods remains a significant challenge. This paper reports a non-contact arterial pulse measurement method based on mmWave radar, with stable signals achieved through a range–angle focusing algorithm. A total of six subjects participated in the experiment, and the results showed that, under different measurement times, the pulse morphology of the same body part for each subject had good consistency, reaching a correlation of over 0.84, and four selected pulse signs remained stable. This is a quantitative assessment revealing a high correlation in pulse morphology measured by radar over different periods. In addition, the influence of array size and measurement distance was analyzed, providing a reference of array selection for research work with different requirements. This work offers an effective reference framework for long-term pulse measurement using radar technology.
RF-Heartbeat: Robust and Contactless Heartbeat Monitoring Based on FMCW Radar

Abstract:Heartbeat is a significant vital sign. The past decade has witnessed wireless heartbeat monitoring becoming more and more feasible. As a contactless approach, it can relieve users from wearing sensors. The unique advantages of milimeter-wave frequency-modulated continous-wave (FMCW) radar over other wireless devices draw our attention. However, there are plenty of limitations in related work based on it. Tiny vibration caused by heartbeat could be easily interrupted by body movements (BMs) and so on. Range bin selection methods in existing work are not robust enough. The inter-beat interval (IBI) estimation need to be further improved. We propose RF-Heartbeat, a robust heartbeat monitoring system based on milimeter-wave FMCW radar. RF-Heartbeat has novel signal process modules, including BMs detection method, and optimal range bin selection method, for obtaining a relatively high-quality heartbeat signal. Then, a global optimization model based on a template matching algorithm is implemented for improving IBI estimation accuracy. In the heartbeat monitoring experiment for a total of 72 hours and 56 minutes involving 10 participants, under a time coverage of 91.2%, the median error of IBI was 12 ms. RF-Heartbeat achieves a higher performance than state-of-the-art heartbeat monitoring systems. It has strong robustness to different individuals in different postures and positions. Our work provides effective solutions to some obstacles in practical applications of contactless heartbeat monitoring. It enables accurate and long-term heartbeat monitoring, which has wide applications in clinical space and daily life.

Abstract:We proposed a non-contact blood pressure detection method based on radio frequency signals, designed a blood pressure detection system, and conducted data testing and analysis. We mainly foucused on the inconvenience of the traditional cuff sphygmomanometer for the special population and such disadvantages as easily disturbed optical signal, inaccurate measurement, and contacting detection in the existing mainstream methods for detecting blood pressure. The system transmits the radio frequency signal to the point to be detected on the body, and then collects the reflected signal. The waveform of the pulse wave transit can be obtained by the Doppler effect principle, and the pulse wave transit time is calculated and used in the blood pressure calculation model to obtain the blood pressure value, thus achieving non-contact continuous detection and monitoring. The experimental results show that the non-contact continuous detection and monitoring of blood pressure can be realized by the proposed device, which provides a feasible method for non-contact measurement and real-time monitoring of blood pressure by portable and wearable equipment.

Abstract:A contactless health monitoring system can contribute to health assessment in daily life by reducing appliance usage and avoiding discomfort from wearing electrodes or sensors. Such contactless approaches have the potential to continuously monitor the health status of users, alert patients and health personnel in time when acute medical emergencies occur, and meet the monitoring demands of special populations, such as newborns, burn patients, and patients with infectious diseases. The Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) radar can measure the range and velocity of sensing targets and be widely applied in heart and respiration rate monitoring and fall detection. Moreover, advances in FMCW radar have enabled low-cost radar-on-chip and antenna-on-chip systems. Thus, FMCW radar has vital application value in the medical and health monitoring fields. In this study, first, we introduce the basic knowledge of the application of FMCW radar in contactless health monitoring. Then, we systematically review the advanced applications and latest papers in this field. Finally, we summarize the present situations and limitations and provide a brief outlook for the application prospects and potential future research in the field.

Abstract:Since respiration and heartbeat are important vital signs of humans, it is meaningful to measure them throughout the day with comfortable experience. This paper proposes the use of the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar for non-contact and non-invasive vital signs measurement. Specifically, the fast Fourier transform is applied to the intermediate frequency signal of the radar to obtain the human chest position, and the phase information on the measured position is collected. Then, the extracted phase is processed by the extended differential and cross-multiply algorithm. The eigenvalues selection based on singular spectrum analysis method is proposed to suppress the interference and noise. Finally, a novel VItal SIigns signals recONstruction (VISION) scheme is further proposed to extract the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) components and reconstruct the respiratory and heartbeat signals effectively. The test platform is built and the experiments are carried out to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method, and the measured results are very close to those achieved by contact sensors.

Abstract:Millimeter Wave(mmWave) radar has been widely used in vital sign monitoring with non-contact and privacy protection. To reduce the effect of random body motion, respiration, and its harmonics on heart rate estimation, the heart rate monitoring based on frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar is researched in this paper. First, a vital sign signal extraction algorithm is designed for the Range Bin variation caused by random body motion and heavy breathing. Second, a heartbeat signal extraction algorithm is designed based on Adaptive Notch Filter (ANF) and Empirical Wavelet Transform (EWT). The harmonic of respiration will be suppressed, and the heartbeat signal will be separated. Finally, the weighted estimation is performed according to the relationship of harmonics of the heartbeat signal to obtain the heart rate. Twenty subjects are invited to the experiment. The experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), reduce the harmonic interference, and estimate the heart rate with a mean absolute error less than 4 BPM.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel sensing system for noninvasive and continuous estimation of blood pressure (BP), which is based on a custom designed wearable 120 GHz Doppler radar sensor. With radar signals detected from brachial artery at the elbow, the moving trajectory of the pulses can be accurately demodulated with micrometer accuracy, and thus the reflective pulse transit time (RPTT) can be obtained for the prediction model to estimate blood pressure. Clinical trials have been launched with invasive blood pressure as reference. The experimental results show a great performance of the designed wearable radar sensor in the detection of weak pulse signatures. Compared to the ground truth of the invasive blood pressure, the estimated blood pressures by radar have mean errors below 3 mmHg for most subjects. The results reveal the possibility for the proposed radar-based BP estimation technique to be employed inside and outside the clinic, such as applications in the vast internet-of-things (loT) and in-home health monitoring.

Abstract:Radar has been shown potentially to be used for non-contact sensing of biosignals in a more comfortable and easier way than wearable and contact devices. By detecting and extracting body motions linked to physiological activities, accurate estimation of the heart rate is possible. However, the detection and estimation of heartbeat signal in practical applications is disturbed seriously by noise and respiration harmonic signal. In this study, a multi-level coarse-to-fine method is proposed for heartbeat rate (HR) estimation with a frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar operating at 60 GHz utilised to extract the heartbeat information of human body under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions. First, the frequencies, which are likely to be the HR, are extracted in the coarse estimation part. Then, evaluations about the extracted frequencies are conducted in the fine estimation part. Finally, the multiple signal classification algorithm is utilised to separate the HR frequency from the respiration harmonics, which solves the frequency resolution issue caused by the observation window size, and achieves high accuracy estimation of HR. The experiments on measured data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the state of the art, the proposed method has superiority in terms of estimation accuracy of HR.

Abstract:Continuous measurement of blood pressure (BP) is very important for assessing the health of the cardiovascular system. In this paper, a new system is first-time established to contactlessly and continuously measure BP according to the central-artery pulse transit time (caPTT) which is acquired from the neck and chest areas simultaneously with single millimeter wave (mmWave) radar. The two signals are separated by beam-component focusing and then BP is estimated by regression fitting. The correlation of the PTT's variation measured by radar and contact device is verified by data from 16 subjects. The effectiveness of BP estimation is evaluated by data from 27 subjects. It is illustrated that the correlation of PTT's variation is up to 0.91 and the errors of SBP and DBP are 5.54±7.62 mmHg and 4.68±6.15 mmHg respectively. The developed system in this work suggested that single radar has the potential to continuously measure BP in daily life.

Abstract:Heart rate measurement technology based on Doppler radar can monitor heart rate in real time without direct contact with the skin, which possesses the advantages of convenient operation, comfort and insensitivity to the skin state. However, due to the limitation of radar’s performance, heartbeat signals obtained by radar sensor do not have clear peak value like electrocardiograms (ECGs) and pulse waves, which affects its measurement accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a non-contact short-term heart rate detection system based on 120 GHz narrow beam frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) millimeter wave radar. On the basis of improving the signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) of intermediate frequency (IF) signals with narrow beam, this system applies stochastic resonance algorithm to enhance the amplitude of heartbeat signals submerged in radar system noise, thus enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of heartbeat signals and improving the accuracy of heart rate detection. The short-term heart rate of 10 volunteers is measured at 3 s interval under the condition that the radar sensor was 1 m from the human chest. Experimental results show that compared with the peak count of the reference pulse wave sensor, the results of this system are highly consistent with those of photoplethysmograph (PPG) detection. Finally, those results of heart rate detection are also used to analyze heart rate variability (HRV).

Abstract:In this work, we proposed and verified that a noncontact measurement to the human cardiogram could be implemented based on the inner connection between the bioelectrical signals that control the diastole and systole of human hearts and the volume change of atriums and ventricles taking place at the surface of skin. A K-band, board-integrated, highly linear and sensitive Doppler radar sensor was designed and implemented to detected such weak motions. Experimental results showed that by linearly retrieving the Doppler information from the signals scattered by the skin, the cardiogram can be measured. While the correspondence between this kind of cardiogram and the conventional ECG can be observed. And the cardiogram also includes velocity and strength information of the atrial and ventricular contractions and relaxations. Such characteristics are highly desirable for hospitalization and personal daily healthcare.

Abstract:Nowadays, daily vital sign monitoring can effectively prevent chronic diseases and has a very important position in the field of medical research. However, the monitoring method is basically contact-based, which causes inconvenience to the daily life of users. This work presents a set of integrated real-time monitoring device system for respiration, pulse, and blood pressure based on the characteristics of non-contact and wide range of milli-meter wave radar. The device obtains data by monitoring the wrist of the human body in a relaxed state. Through image processing and machine learning, the respiration and pulse waveforms with good accuracy are separated, and the obtained blood pressure value also has a certain accuracy. The milli-meter wave radar itself has the advantages of low power, simple circuit, and good integration, so the device has a great market prospect.

Abstract:In recent years, non-contact radar detection technology has been able to achieve long-term and long-range detection for the breathing and heartbeat signals. Compared with contact-based detection methods, it brings a more comfortable and a faster experience to the human body, and it has gradually received attention in the field of radar sensing. Therefore, this paper extends the application of millimeter-wave radar to the field of health care. The millimeter-wave radar first transmits the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) and collects the echo signals of the human body. Then, the phase information of the intermediate frequency (IF) signals including the breathing and heartbeat signals are extracted, and the Direct Current (DC) offset of the phase information is corrected using the circle center dynamic tracking algorithm. The extended differential and cross-multiply (DACM) is further applied for phase unwrapping. We propose two algorithms, namely the compressive sensing based on orthogonal matching pursuit (CS-OMP) algorithm and rigrsure adaptive soft threshold noise reduction based on discrete wavelet transform (RA-DWT) algorithm, to separate and reconstruct the breathing and heartbeat signals. Then, a frequency-domain fast Fourier transform and a time-domain autocorrelation estimation algorithm are proposed to calculate the respiratory and heartbeat rates. The proposed algorithms are compared with the contact-based detection ones. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms effectively suppress the noise and harmonic interference, and the accuracies of the proposed algorithms for both respiratory rate and heartbeat rate reach about 93%.

Then, choose the longest link whose initial frequency is closer to the frequency at the last second. The value of the link tail will be a vital sign rate at the current second. The proposed method is simulated in a public noncontact vital dataset to verify its feasibility and accuracy. To further demonstrate the method, this article carried out a series of experiments. The experimental results show that the method has an accuracy rate of 98% for the heartbeat rate in real-time and reduces the effect of clutter and respiratory harmonics on the heartbeat rate.

Abstract:The electrocardiogram (ECG) has always been an important biomedical test to diagnose cardiovascular diseases. Current approaches for ECG monitoring are based on body attached electrodes leading to uncomfortable user experience. Therefore, contactless ECG monitoring has drawn tremendous attention, which however remains unsolved. In fact, cardiac electrical-mechanical activities are coupling in a well-coordinated pattern. In this paper, we achieve contactless ECG monitoring by breaking the boundary between the cardiac mechanical and electrical activity. Specifically, we develop a millimeter-wave radar system to contactlessly measure cardiac mechanical activity and reconstruct ECG without any contact in. To measure the cardiac mechanical activity comprehensively, we propose a series of signal processing algorithms to extract 4D cardiac motions from radio frequency (RF) signals. Furthermore, we design a deep neural network to solve the cardiac related domain transformation problem and achieve end-to-end reconstruction mapping from RF input to the ECG output. The experimental results show that our contactless ECG measurements achieve timing accuracy of cardiac electrical events with median error below 14 ms and morphology accuracy with median Pearson-Correlation of 90% and median Root-Mean-Square-Error of 0.081mv compared to the groudtruth ECG. These results indicate that the system enables the potential of contactless, continuous and accurate ECG monitoring.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, non-contact vital sign estimation using millimeter wave radar technology has gotten much attention. Most studies are based on radar platforms that were not built for home scenarios and had high transmitting power and colossal volume. This work employs a low-power millimeter wave radar system produced using Antenna in Package technology (AiP) with a transmit power of less than 6 dBm, significantly lower than that commonly utilized in related research. However, in application scenarios, the echo intensity cannot be maintained at an optimal level with these low-power devices, making accurate and reliable monitoring difficult to obtain. To further reduce the noise component and improve the signal-to-noise ratio, a heartbeat monitoring algorithm based on wavelet transform noise reduction is suggested in this study. The low-frequency terms of the wavelet transform of the chest wall micro-motion signal are interpreted as body random swinging and breathing, and the remaining terms are interpreted as the heartbeat signal. In a 20-minute monitoring experiment, 96.96% accuracy is reached by the method proposed in this study in the context of home scenario monitoring.
