Abstract:AbstractIntegrated photonic‐assisted instantaneous frequency measurements (IFMs) have been extensively explored and widely used in 5G/6G communications, navigation, automotive control, and radar systems. They offer significant advantages such as wide frequency, low power consumption, and immunity to electromagnetic interference compared to electrical solutions. As data traffic in high‐speed wireless communication systems and the operation bandwidth of advanced radar systems continue to grow, there is an urgent need for large instantaneous bandwidths and accurate frequency measurements to ensure signal integrity and efficient bandwidth utilization. However, achieving wide‐bandwidth and high‐precision measurements simultaneously with photonic IFMs remains challenging. Here, an integrated photonic IFM system based on a thin‐film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform is demonstrated that can dynamically identify signals with wide‐band frequency changes. The system incorporates a wide‐bandwidth Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a high‐Q Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI)‐coupled microring resonator (MRR) for double‐sideband suppressed‐carrier (DSB‐SC) modulation. Additionally, it includes dual‐stage frequency discriminator based on asymmetric MZIs (AMZIs) for both coarse wide‐band and accurate narrow‐band measurements. The proposed IFM system operates over a wide‐band frequency up to 67 GHz with a low root mean square (RMS) error of less than 123 MHz. This work opens up a path for high‐performance broadband microwave photonic applications using TFLN platform.

Abstract:Over the past few years, numerous photonic-wireless transmission demonstrations with high data rates in the terahertz (THz) band have been reported, aiming to supporting the explosive growth of data traffic in next-generation communication networks. Usually, real-time analysis of THz signals is implemented in the intermediate frequency domain by using electronic down-converters with limited bandwidth, which brings inconvenience to the monitoring of very large THz bandwidth. In this work, an equivalent-time sampling (ETS) system based on a conventional photoconductive antenna (PCA) for capturing and monitoring high-speed THz signals is proposed, theoretically analyzed, and experimentally demonstrated. The PCA, excited by optical pulses from a mode-locked laser (similar to 100 MHz) and biased by the THz fields, enables the equivalent optical sampling of THz signals into low-frequency regions. In our proof-of-concept experiment, a single-frequency signal at 125 GHz and 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals at a baud rate of 15 Gbaud at 125 GHz are successfully sampled, monitored, and evaluated with a similar to 100 MHz sampling rate. In this way, the high-speed THz signals can be easily accessible with no need of additional high-frequency components. The waveform distortion values for single-frequency and high-speed communication signal are 0.11%, 2.96% (in-phase) and 2.56% (quadrature). Our proposed ETS system is expected to provide a simple, convenient, and straightforward approach to capture and monitor broadband THz signals.

Abstract:In recent years, remarkable achievements have been witnessed in developing terahertz (THz) communication systems with high data rates. However, the analyzers/receivers of most THz communication systems still heavily rely on electronic circuits with limited bandwidth, obstructing the further exploration of THz resource. In this work, an equivalent-time sampling (ETS) system based on a conventional photoconductive antenna (PCA) is proposed for capturing high-speed THz signals. The PCA is excited by ultrashort optical pulses from a low repetition-rate mode-locked laser (MLL) and hence alternates the sampling of high-speed THz signals into low-frequency domain. The proposed ETS system for THz signals is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proof-of-concept experiment, an on-off keying (OOK) signal with a baud rate of 15 Gbaud are successfully sampled and evaluated. The proposed THz ETS system can be easily accessible by low-speed electronics, which is expected to bring new opportunities for high-speed THz time-domain analyzer.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a THz frequency domain attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy system using photomixing coherent detection. In our work, the terahertz signal is generated through the optical beat of two DFB lasers, and mixed with the same beat note using a time delay. Since one of the DFB lasers works in frequency sweep mode, we obtain the THz spectra in the range of 0.2-1.2THz with a dynamic range of over 60dB and a frequent resolution of 100MHz. In addition, we propose to insert an ATR prism in the spatial optical path to enable direct detection of polar liquids and solids, which have strong absorption of the terahertz waves. We demonstrate the measurement of the dielectric constant of distilled water with the proposed technique, the results are consistent with the calculated results from the Liebe model.

Abstract:Dual-comb based hyperspectral imaging (DCHI) offers outstanding advantages for ultra- precise spectral analysis. In this work, we present and demonstrate terahertz (THz) hyperspectral imaging using a photonic swept-frequency dual-comb THz source, which combines frequency-modulated continuous waves (FMCW) with dual electro-optic combs. The proposed innovative approach can overcome the typical trade-off between spectral bandwidth and frequency resolution in traditional dual-comb imaging systems, impressively achieving a frequency resolution of 50 MHz within a flexible spectral bandwidth of 220-320 GHz for non-destructive imaging diagnostics.

Broadband Optoelectronic Mixer for Terahertz Frequency-Comb Measurements

Abstract:We demonstrate ultra-broadband optoelectronic mixing of frequency combs that provides phase-coherent detection of a repetition frequency up to 500 GHz, using a high-speed modified uni-traveling carrier (MUTC) photodiode. Nonlinear photo-electron effects in the photodiode itself enable harmonic generation and down-mixing process of combs with widely different repetition frequency. Specifically, we generate two, 25 GHz frequency combs and use an optical filter to explore coherent down-mixing to baseband of comb spectral components across microwave, millimeter wave, and terahertz (THz) frequencies. The exceptional noise performance of the optoelectronic mixer enables the phase-coherent measurement of millimeter-wave and THz frequency combs with an Allan deviation of 10^-13/t for a measurement time of t. We further investigate the dependence of conversion loss on the reverse bias voltage and photocurrent. The experimental results indicate that we can minimize the conversion loss by operating the photodiode at an optimal voltage and maximum available photocurrent. Our work provides a solution for millimeter-wave and THz frequency comb measurements and facilitates fully stabilized frequency combs with microresonators.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) frequency metrology has become a topic of increasing interest due to the potential applications for THz radiation. While a diversity of THz radiation sources has been demonstrated, there are arguably fewer methods that can be used for the detection of THz radiation, and this has limited the ability to perform spectroscopic measurements in the information-rich THz frequency range. A technique that may facilitate the wider application and accessibility of THz spectroscopy is the nonlinear up-conversion of THz fields to the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range, where there is a plethora of well-developed detection techniques. In this work, we demonstrate the measurement of THz frequency, using up-conversion in an organic crystal, in effect, mapping the target THz spectrum to a spectrum in the NIR wavelength range. The demonstrated measurement range covers a band of up to 29.15 THz (3.45 octaves), which complements the capabilities of existing heterodyne techniques. The ability of this technique to detect slight frequency shifts is examined and methods by which this can be further improved are proposed. The techniques presented in this work have the potential to enable frequency metrology of electromagnetic radiation across the optical-to-THz regions.

Abstract:The fiber-based femtosecond optical frequency comb has great potential in the field of fundamental physics and precision measurement.An experimental apparatus for precise control of the fiber-based femtosecond optical frequency comb was discribed.The system was combined with a digital charge-pump phase-locked loop(CPPLL) and a temperature stabilizer.The optical comb system was buit of which the repetition frequency F_(rep) is 129 MHz and the carrier-envelope offset(CEO) frequency F_(ceo) is about 33 MHz.The frequency comb was locked with the standard signal provided by the agilent PSG analog signal generator.The locked state can be maintained over 1 day.The standard deviation of repletion frequency was0.78 mHz which is the same order of magnitude with reference,and the standard deviation of CEO frequency can be 8.98 Hz.

Abstract:Terahertz comb spectroscopy offers advantages of high-resolution in broadband THz regions. However, conventional implementations of terahertz comb spectrometers are difficult to simultaneously achieve high precision and long-term stability due to the residual timing jitter of the involved light sources. In this work, an adaptive-clock signal from optical beat note in optical region was extracted for real-time correcting the unstable sampling interval-time caused by the residual timing jitter and a loosely active frequency-stabilized scheme functioned as a real-time feedback. And finally, a long-term stable terahertz dual-comb spectrometer was constructed with a spectral resolution of 66.14 MHz, a comb linewidth of 1.9 kHz, a fractional precision of 1.7 × 10 −9 and a long-term operation over 1200 h. This proved that the precise acquisition of THz pulses could be realized through the compensation of timing jitter for pumped optical pulses. The presented terahertz comb spectrometer is featured with enhanced robustness compared to previous schemes based on two fully stabilized mode-locked laser combs, which would thus facilitate field deployment outside the laboratories.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic terahertz (THz) continuous-wave vector imaging scheme using an optical frequency comb (OFC), to overcome the influence of phase noise and frequency fluctuation on extracting stable imaging information. In the experiment, a phase modulator is used to create an OFC, and an intensity modulator is employed to generate first-order harmonics for all OFC lines. The THz imaging signal is photonically generated by a uni-traveling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD), and detected by a self-mixing Schottky barrier diode (SBD) detector after passing through a sample under test. We theoretically and experimentally investigate the robustness merit of our proposed scheme in THz imaging by selecting two OFC lines, instead of either two free-running lasers or two segments of the OFC. Our experimental results show the standard deviation of amplitude and phase information in the proposed system can be significantly improved compared to other two schemes, reaching as low as about 0.032 mV and 0.54, which represents the best amplitude standard deviation in the 300GHz band, to the best of our knowledge. Therefore, the proposed system is promising to implement THz imaging with high resolution, flexible frequency tunability as well as high robustness.

Abstract:We demonstrate the advantages of THz frequency combs for high-resolution spectroscopy. This benefits from wide spectral coverage and the exact knowledge of the frequency position of each comb component. Heterodyne detection combined with a fast Fourier spectrometer enables rapid and simultaneous measurement of more than 80 frequency comb modes covering a 7.5 GHz bandwidth. A spectrum is obtained in under 20 minutes yielding a uniform resolution of 70 kHz. This new setup has been validated by recording more than 150 lines of methanol around 723 GHz, and represents a new solution to exploit THz frequency combs for high-resolution spectroscopy.

Abstract:Engineering a Terahertz (THz) frequency comb spectroscopy at atomic level advances the precisely measurement in spectroscopy and sensing. Current progresses on THz frequency comb rely on difference-frequency generation, optical parametric oscillation, and other methods. Generating a THz frequency comb poses challenges in source stability and achieving a narrow bandwidth, which traditional THz devices are difficult to achieve. Furthermore, accurately measuring the generated THz frequency comb necessitates a high-performance THz detector. Rydberg atoms are well-suited for electric field sensing due to their ultra-wide radio frequency transition energy levels, making them especially sensitive to external electric fields in the DC to THz bandwidth. However, there have been no reports about generating THz frequency comb spectroscopy at the atomic level until now. This work presents a THz frequency comb spectroscopy with Rydberg atoms, in which a Floquet comb-like transition is engineered through a time-periodic drive field. Our approach simplifies the setup required for THz frequency comb spectroscopy while extending the working bandwidth for Rydberg atomic sensors. The THz frequency comb spectroscopy at the atomic level reported in this article shows great potential for various applications in astronomy, remote sensing, spectral detection of biological samples, and other related fields.

Abstract:Freely engineering the operation frequency of frequency comb sources is crucial for various applications, e.g., high-precision spectroscopy, ranging, communications, and so on. Here, by employing band structure simulations, group velocity dispersion (GVD) analysis, and experimental verifications, we demonstrate that the operation frequency of terahertz (THz) quantum cascade laser frequency combs can be engineered from 4.2 to 4.0 THz. First of all, from the viewpoint of the band structure engineering, we shift the frequency corresponding to the optical transitions in the active region from 4.2 to 4.0 THz by slightly altering the thicknesses of quantum wells. Meanwhile, a GVD analysis is applied to evaluate the potential comb performance. Finally, experimental characterizations, e.g., emission spectra, inter-mode beatnote, dual-comb operation, are performed to validate the exceptional comb operation at 4.0 THz. The advancement in simulations and experimental results present a comprehensive method to customize the desired THz radiative frequency for comb generation, which facilitates the practical development of broadband, high-precision THz comb sources.

Abstract:A simple photonic scheme for generation of linear frequency modulated (LFM) THz pulses with large bandwidth is experimentally demonstrated based on an optical interferometer. We successfully generate linearly chirped THz pulses centered at 350 GHz, and featuring a bandwidth in excess of 40 GHz. The tunability of the THz center frequency is also investigated in the experiment. The time bandwidth product (TBWP) of the generated THz pulses is up to 340, which will have a potential in implementing high resolution radar sensing and imaging.

Abstract:The femtosecond optical frequency comb based on mode-locked laser is a laser source which can emit trains of pulses with stable repetition rate,and the spectrum of the pulses consists of a comb of optical frequencies with equal spacing.Femtosecond optical frequency combs can link the microwave frequency to the optical frequency,achieving the direct measurement of absolute optical frequency.Besides,as special lasers different from traditional stabilized continuous wave lasers,femtosecond optical frequency combs present superiorities in the optical precision measurement areas such as laser frequency rulers,absolute distance measurements and precision spectroscopy measurements.The recent progress,key techniques and potential directions of femtosecond optical frequency combs for precision measurement applications are reviewed.Femtosecond optical frequency combs will play an important role in the field of optical precision measurements in future.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs provide a powerful tool for precise measurement of the optical frequency, holding significant importance in fields such as spectroscopy, optical communication and optical clock. The frequency stability of the comb line determines the precision of the frequency measurement, but the delicate interplay between high precision, low power consumption and integration still needs to be optimized. To this aim, here we demonstrate a frequency measurement scheme based on a fully stabilized electro-optic comb, in which the pump laser frequency and repetition rate are independently locked to the atomic transition and microwave signal. The measurement precision of the demonstrated wavemeter can reach sub-kHz-level, and the parallel measurement of multiple wavelengths can be performed. Therefore, by combining the technical scheme reported here with advanced integrated functional devices, our system is expected to provide a feasible solution for chip-scale frequency precision measurement and reference. Optical frequency combs enable precise measurement of optical frequencies, but integrated setups require a delicate balance between high precision and low power consumption. The authors demonstrate a sub-kHz-frequency measurement scheme based on a fully stabilized electro-optic comb that enables the parallel measurement of multiple wavelengths.

Abstract:Free-electron radiations prompt numerous advanced applications such as particle detectors, biological imaging, and light sources from microwave to X-ray. While their polarization, directionality, and phase could be shaped with prosperous metamaterials, their natural broad spectra have not been tailored to yield frequency combs, which are state-of-the-art technology in metrology, spectroscopy, and precision frequency synthesis. Here, the frequency comb directly emitted from the free-electron radiation is demonstrated by simultaneously exciting a series of modes with equidistant spectral lines. Both the offset and repetition frequencies are readily adapted by structural parameters, and relative spectrum intensities between the comb teeth are customizable based on selective coupling, thus permitting flexible tunability over broadband. Moreover, the repetition rate is experimentally verified at the microwave regime. The proposed methodology implies that swift electrons present a natural and versatile platform for generating frequency combs, facilitating the development of metrology and spectroscopy in the terahertz band.

Abstract:We demonstrate a method to determine the absolute mode number of a frequency comb when it is used for high-precision laser frequency measurement, without the help of wavemeters. Our technique involves changing the repetition rate of the frequency comb in a two-step process. Guidelines for choosing the correct repetition rates for different laser linewidths are given. As a demonstration, the absolute frequencies of two lasers with different linewidths are measured with our method.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a continuous-wave terahertz (THz) vector imaging system based on an optical frequency comb, which can avoid interference of phase noise induced by both laser and RF sources. As a benefit, the proposed THz system is capable of extracting stable amplitude and phase information and supporting robust THz imaging measurements. The system uses a phase modulator to create a wide optical frequency comb, and an intensity modulator to generate first-order harmonics of each comb line. The THz signal is photonically generated by an uni-traveling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD), and then detected in a Schottky barrier diode (SBD) detector. With respects to the reception, the THz signal is firstly down-converted into an electrical signal at the SBD based on the square-law detection and self-mixing, which is then mixed with a local oscillator (LO) and fed into a lock-in amplifier (LIA) to extract amplitude and phase information for imaging. The experimental results show the fluctuations of amplitude and phase in this system are about 0.14 mV and 3.3, respectively. The system has a great potential in real-time THz security inspection and biomedical science.
