Abstract:We demonstrate ultra-broadband optoelectronic mixing of frequency combs that provides phase-coherent detection of a repetition frequency up to 500 GHz, using a high-speed modified uni-traveling carrier (MUTC) photodiode. Nonlinear photo-electron effects in the photodiode itself enable harmonic generation and down-mixing process of combs with widely different repetition frequency. Specifically, we generate two, 25 GHz frequency combs and use an optical filter to explore coherent down-mixing to baseband of comb spectral components across microwave, millimeter wave, and terahertz (THz) frequencies. The exceptional noise performance of the optoelectronic mixer enables the phase-coherent measurement of millimeter-wave and THz frequency combs with an Allan deviation of 10^-13/t for a measurement time of t. We further investigate the dependence of conversion loss on the reverse bias voltage and photocurrent. The experimental results indicate that we can minimize the conversion loss by operating the photodiode at an optimal voltage and maximum available photocurrent. Our work provides a solution for millimeter-wave and THz frequency comb measurements and facilitates fully stabilized frequency combs with microresonators.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to achieve the design and application of broadband optoelectronic mixers in the terahertz (THz) frequency range, so as to provide phase - coherent detection with a repetition frequency of up to 500 GHz. Specifically, the authors demonstrated the technique of ultra - broadband optoelectronic mixing using high - speed modified uni - traveling - carrier (MUTC) photodiodes. This technique utilizes the nonlinear photoelectric effect in the photodiode to realize the harmonic generation and down - mixing processes of combs with different repetition frequencies. Through this method, they were able to explore the coherent down - mixing of comb spectral components from microwave, millimeter - wave to terahertz frequency ranges to the baseband. The key contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Solve the difficult problem of phase - coherent measurement between high - repetition - frequency (such as 100 GHz to 1000 GHz) micro - combs and microwave frequency references**: Traditional schemes require complex auxiliary frequency combs or electro - optic modulation techniques to achieve down - conversion, while the method proposed in this paper simplifies this process. 2. **Optimize the nonlinear characteristics of the photodiode**: By studying the relationship between conversion loss and reverse - bias voltage and photocurrent, the optimal operating conditions for minimizing conversion loss were found, that is, operating at the optimal voltage and the maximum available photocurrent. 3. **Provide a solution with low noise and wide operating bandwidth**: The proposed optoelectronic mixer has a compact size, low additional noise and wide operating bandwidth, and is suitable for accurately detecting the repetition frequency of frequency combs in the terahertz frequency range. These achievements are of great significance for realizing fully - stabilized micro - comb optical frequency synthesis and provide key technical support for future terahertz communication and sensing applications.
