Abstract:Brillouin scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors have been successfully employed in various applications in recent decades, because of benefits such as small size, light weight, electromagnetic immunity, and continuous monitoring of temperature and strain. However, the data processing requirements for the Brillouin Gain Spectrum (BGS) restrict further improvement of monitoring performance and limit the application of real-time measurements. Studies using Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) to measure Brillouin Frequency Shift (BFS) have been performed in recent years to validate the possibility of improving measurement performance. In this work, a novel FNN that is 3 times faster than previous FNNs is proposed to improve BFS measurement performance. More specifically, after the original Brillouin Gain Spectrum (BGS) is preprocessed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the data are fed into the Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) to predict BFS.

Abstract:In order to measure the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) of the medium, this paper proposes a method using mixtures in a two-cell stimulated Brillouin scattering system, which uses a medium to be measured as amplifier medium and a mixture medium as generator medium. The seed light from the generator gains effective amplification in the amplifier and the amplification ratio changes with the mixing fraction. Only when the BFS of the mixture medium is equal to that of the medium in the amplifier does the seed light obtain the maximum amplification ratio. The method has the advantage of independence of the wavelength of the incident light.
Performance analysis of frequency shift estimation techniques in Brillouin distributed fiber sensors

Abstract:The performance of post-processing techniques carried out on the Brillouin gain spectrum to estimate the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) in standard Brillouin distributed sensors is evaluated. Curve fitting methods with standard functions such as polynomial and Lorentzian, as well as correlation techniques such as Lorentzian Cross-correlation and Cross Reference Plot Analysis (CRPA), are considered for the analysis. The fitting procedures and key parameters for each technique are optimized, and the performance in terms of BFS uncertainty, BFS offset error and processing time is compared by numerical simulations and through controlled experiments. Such a quantitative comparison is performed in varying conditions including signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), frequency measurement step, and BGS truncation. It is demonstrated that the Lorentzian cross-correlation technique results in the largest BFS offset error due to truncation, while exhibiting the smallest BFS uncertainty and the shortest processing time. A novel approach is proposed to compensate such a BFS offset error, which enables the Lorentzian cross-correlation technique to completely outperform other fitting methods.
High-spatial-resolution Fast Brillouin Optical Fiber Sensor for Distributed Dynamic Measurement Based on Differential Double-Pulse

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-spatial-resolution fast Brillouin optical time-domain analysis scheme based on frequency agility and differential double-pulse for distributed dynamic measurement. The frequency-agility probe wave is obtained from the second-order sideband of the modulated light by using frequency-agility microwave signal from a wideband arbitrary waveform generator. The differential double-pulse technique is proposed to improve the spatial resolution while keeping the capability of dynamic measurement. In experiment, a spatial resolution of 20 cm is achieved by using a 52/50 ns differential double-pulse, and the distributed vibration measurement is demonstrated over a 50-m Panda fiber with a maximum vibration frequency of up to 50 Hz. With only five averages, the standard deviation of the strain accuracy is of 14με;.

Abstract:We have experimentally investigated spatial-division multiplexed (SDM) Brillouin optical time-domain analysis in a heterogeneous multicore fiber whose central core and six outer cores are made from different preforms, showing a similar to 70 MHz Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) difference between them. It reveals that the heterogeneous central core and the outer cores have different temperature sensitivities, but their strain sensitivities are almost the same. By making use of the distinct temperature coefficients of these two kinds of cores, simultaneous and discriminative temperature and strain measurements are achieved. The bending-induced Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) broadening issue in off-center cores has been clarified, and a solution has been proposed to eliminate the uncertainty caused by a bending-induced BFS shift, by averaging the BFS variations of two symmetrical outer cores. We show a new perspective for discriminative measurement in Brillouin distributed sensors based on SDM solutions. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Brillouin-based optical fiber sensing has been regarded as a good distributed measurement tool for the modern large geometrical structure and the industrial facilities because it can demodulate the distributed environment information (e.g., temperature and strain) along the sensing fiber. Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA), which is an excellent and attractive scheme, has been widely developed thanks to its high performance in a signal-to-noise ratio, a spatial resolution, and sensing distance. However, the sampling rate of the classical BOTDA is severely limited by several factors (especially the serially frequency-sweeping process) so that it cannot be suitable for the quickly distributed measurement. In this work, we summarize some promising breakthroughs about the fast BOTDA, which can be named as an optical frequency comb technique, an optical frequency-agile technique, a slope-assisted technique, and an optical chirp chain technique.

Abstract:In this article, fast measurement of Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) based on a linearly frequency modulated (LFM) pulse and a digital matched filter is studied theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. The Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) change is detected by measuring the time shift of the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) along the time axis instead of the frequency shift, as in traditional BOTDR. In the experiment, we propose to use a positive- and negative-swept pulse, named bipolarchirped pulse pair (BPP), to determine the BFS change with high accuracy. A BGS acquisition of up to 320 Hz is obtained for a fiber length of 2 km with a strain measurement accuracy of +/- 8 mu epsilon. Strain measurements in a range of up to 10000 mu epsilon are conducted, and the resulting strain coefficient is equal to 0.048 MHz/MHz/mu epsilon, which matches that of standard single-mode fibers. The BPP-BOTDR technique is an intrinsic one-end-injection truly distributed system that exhibits high measurement speed and high accuracy, which may pave the way for various BOTDR applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and demonstrate an ultrahigh-speed Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis (BOCDA) with a single-position sampling rate of 200 kS/s and a spatial resolution of 8 cm. The Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) is obtained by using a data subtraction scheme rather than the conventional lock-in amplifier (LIA) detection configuration, thus removing the limitation of measurement speed imposed by the LIA. Meanwhile, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) is used to sweep the frequency interval between the pump and the probe rapidly. As a proof of concept, we implement measurements of various dynamic strains with frequencies up to 20 kHz at arbitrary position. Moreover, to implement high-speed distributed measurements of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) along the whole fiber under test (FUT), we propose a novel measuring method which moves the correlation peak and sweeps the pump-probe frequency interval simultaneously. A repetition rate of 1 kHz is verified by measuring dynamic strains with frequencies up to 200 Hz, for distributed measurements performed with 200 points.

Abstract:A photonic approach to realizing instantaneous measurement of microwave frequency based on optical monitoring using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and demonstrated. In the approach, a frequency-unknown microwave signal is modulated on an optical carrier in a Mach–Zehnder modulator biased at the minimum transmission point. After detecting the transmission and reflection optical powers at the output of the FBG, the microwave frequency can be determined according to the value of transmission-to-reflection power ratio, due to the fixed relationship between the microwave frequency and the power ratio. A proof-of-concept experiment has been performed, which demonstrates that a measurement resolution of ±0.08GHz over a 10GHz measurement bandwidth is achieved. The measurement performance in terms of resolution is better than previously reported results.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber Brillouin sensors detect the temperature and strain along a fiber according to the local Brillouin frequency shift (BFS), which is usually calculated by the measured Brillouin spectrum using Lorentzian curve fitting. In addition, cross-correlation, principal component analysis, and machine learning methods have been proposed for the more efficient extraction of BFS. However, existing methods only process the Brillouin spectrum individually, ignoring the correlation in the time domain, indicating that there is still room for improvement. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a BFS extraction convolutional neural network (BFSCNN) to retrieve the distributed BFS directly from the measured two-dimensional data. Simulated ideal Brillouin spectra with various parameters are used to train the BFSCNN. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the extraction accuracy of the BFSCNN is better than that of the traditional curve fitting algorithm with a much shorter processing time. The BFSCNN has good universality and robustness and can effectively improve the performances of existing Brillouin sensors. © 2020 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:A technique for the instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) of broadband signals is proposed based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a single-mode optical fiber. The instantaneous frequency and amplitude information is obtained by the narrowband filtering of the acoustic-optic interaction in the SBS process. Through sideband management of the optical-modulation, the IFM bandwidth can be far beyond the Brillouin frequency shift (i.e. ~11 GHz in 1550 nm). Proof-of-concept experiments for both the linearly frequency modulated pulse and frequency Costas coded pulse are carried out to verify the feasibility of the IFM.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel method to measure the nonlinear parameter of an optical fiber by characterizing the evolution of self-phase modulation (SPM) based on Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA). BOTDA uses an ns-order pump pulse to provide the evolution of the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) over an optical fiber, which is the convolution of the intrinsic BGS and the pulse spectrum, subsequently reflecting the pulse spectrum broadening induced by SPM. An experiment is carried out with a 2 km standard single-mode fiber using a 9.72 ns Gaussian pump pulse, and the nonlinear parameter is measured to be 2.03 W-1 km(-1) through comparing simulations with measured Brillouin spectra for nonlinear phase shifts of 1.5 pi and 2.5 pi, which agrees well with previously reported results. Abstract:The key operation of traditional Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) is the frequency-sweeping process to get the distributed Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) whose central frequency (i.e. Brillouin frequency shift, BFS) has a linear relationship with the environmental information (e.g. temperature or strain) over the sensing fiber. However, this time-consuming process has limited the sampling rate of BOTDA. In this paper, we summarize several fast BOTDA systems for dynamic strain measurement which is developed by our team and refers to frequency-agile technique, slope-assisted methods and optical chirp chain technique.
Broadband Brillouin Slow Light Based on Multifrequency Phase Modulation in Optical Fibers

Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate broadband Brillouin slow light using multiple equal-amplitude spectral lines generated by multifrequency phase modulation, The theoretical analysis shows that 4n-1 equal-amplitude spectral lines can be obtained if the modulation signal comprises the fundamental frequency and the odd harmonic waves, where n denotes the number of frequency components in the modulation signal. In experiment, 7 and 11 equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained and Brillouin bandwidths of 340 and 570 MHz are gained, respectively. The experimental results also indicate that the slope of the broadening factor for the delayed signal decreases in the case of broad and flattened Brillouin gain spectrum. Abstract:The Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique is a powerful method for laser frequency stabilization, and a PDH loop can also act as a single-channel sensor with high resolution and fast response speed. In this work, we expand the PDH technique into a time-domain distributed form, accomplishing a fast Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) scheme which measures the distribution of Brillouin frequency shifts along optical fiber without frequency scanning. Approaches of phase modulated probe light, synchronous demodulation for PDH error, arbitrarily accessing in single interrogation, and distributed form feedback control are employed in the system. The scheme achieves fast measurement speed and large dynamic range at the same time, as well as good response linearity and high tolerance to optical power fluctuation. In the demonstration experiment, sensing resolution of 0.4 MHz and measurement range of 300 MHz are realized, under the condition of 25 km single mode communication fiber, 5 m spatial resolution and 0.24 s measurement time (400 times of averaging).

Abstract:We demonstrate an arbitrary-response Brillouin instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) based on the principle of the frequency-to-power mapping in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), which is named Brillouin IFM. The arbitrary response is realized by periodically sweeping the frequency of the local pump lightwave, and the response's amplitude depends on the sweeping slope. The Brillouin IFM is achieved by the control of the sweeping period lower than the double of the flight-of-time in the SBS interaction length. A Costas frequency coded pulse is experimentally measured to verify the feasibility of the proposed Brillouin IFM scheme. The bandwidth of the digital sampling in the scheme is reduced to 50 MHz. Abstract:The Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometer (BOTDR) system, which is based on the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) of the scattering spectrum, has been widely applied to monitor the temperature and strain in many fields. The measurement accuracy of the BFS directly affects the monitoring and location of the temperature change or strain events. In this study, the characteristics of the least-squares fitting optimal solution of the Brillouin power spectrum are theoretically investigated, and a half-peak fitting algorithm is proposed to measure the BFS with high accuracy and stability. In particular, it can precisely determine the double-peak spectrum and detect the position in the transition Section of a temperature change or strain event. Furthermore, it can reduce calculation complexity and enhance measurement speed by dropping most of the data. For the fiber under test (FUT) with a length of 12 km, 200 groups of time-domain data were processed using a probe pulse of width 50 ns and sampling rate 1 GHz. The half-peak fitting algorithm increased the temperature measurement accuracy by 1 fold, with 20% calculation of full fitting. Meanwhile, it effectively eliminated the influence of minor peak in the double-peak spectrum, and optimized the spatial resolution of the temperature change position to 0.1 m, which is the maximum limitation by sampling rate.

Abstract:The measurement of Brillouin frequency shift in fiber sensor with edge technique is proposed. The relation between measurement accuracy of Brillouin frequency shift and signal to noise ratio (SNR) is analyzed. The edge technique is realized by choosing the frequency of electrical local oscillator and adopting lowpass filter (LPF). The system with edge technique measures the frequency shift by the edge signal rather than the maximum signal, because the edge signals are higher sensitive to the variation of frequency than the maximum signal. From the calculated results, the SNR required is 37dB to achieve frequency shift resolution of 0.5MHz by using double-edge technique, comparing with 65.1dB in conventional detection system measuring the maximum signal, edge technique improves the measurement accuracy of Brillouin frequency shift greatly. In addition, by choosing the frequency of electrical local oscillator, the highest measurement accuracy of Brillouin frequency shift is achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a high-speed Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis (BOCDA) system by exploiting the slope of the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS). In the slope-assisted (SA) scheme, the Brillouin frequency shift change is obtained by recording the Brillouin power variation. In this case, the time-consuming frequency sweeping process is avoided, leading to an ultrahigh measurement speed for Brillouin sensors. Here, this SA concept is adopted into the BOCDA system to improve its measurement speed. Moreover, in order to achieve pump-powerindependent and fiber-loss-insensitive measurements, a dual-slopeassisted (DSA) scheme is implemented by measuring the ratio between readings taken from both slopes of the BGS. By employing this new technique, a repetition rate of 625 Hz as well as a centimeter-level spatial resolution is achieved, which is verified by measuring dynamic strains with frequencies up to 100 Hz. Meanwhile, by using the proposed system, distributed and dynamic tracking of mechanical wave propagating along the fiber under test is realized. Moreover, the limitations of DSA-BOCDA on measurement accuracy, spatial resolution, and measurement speed are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:This study introduces a new approach to enhance the measurement speed in the suggested system-on-chip (SoC) by incorporating quadratic least mean square (LMS) filtering with moving average (MA) and moving median (MM) filters at a low-averaging stage. The use of MA and MM filters in the frequency and time domains yields a significant enhancement in the reliability and accuracy of the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS). Our method, as demonstrated in this study, exhibits a significantly reduced latency, which ranges from 14 to 1563 times faster than Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) systems that rely on an oscilloscope and a computer for data processing, and the BOTDA system utilizing SoC with LMS filtering alone. Compared with LMS curve fitting alone, the implementation of this technique greatly enhances accuracy with low averages by 84%. These filters enable the identification of minor disruptions along the cable. The proposed method successfully detects small variations in Brillouin frequency while maintaining the spatial resolution of sensors. The deployed filters result in a spatial resolution ranging from 1.6 to 1.5 m, which demonstrates greater constancy than the normal range of 2–1.6 m. This study successfully employs filtering techniques in the frequency and time domains by incorporating low averaging and a broad dynamic range. The use of SoC technology in BOTDA improves measurement speed, accuracy, and the preservation of spatial resolution constancy. However, the measurable fiber length is limited due to ac coupling on the analog-to-digital converter board. The algorithm and dataset are publicly available at GitHub.
