Abstract:The finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method was used to simulate the propagation of P polarized light Gaussian beam in a single subwavelength metallic(Ag)slit surrounded by gratings.Because of the effect of surface plasmons wave,slit with symmetric grating can realize symmetric diffraction,and special asymmetric structure can achieve off-angle beaming phenomenon.Through formula Derivation and Helmholtz reciprocity theorem,devices for parallel beam of P polarized light could be designed.With the Gaussian beam's divergence and near-field distribution,the structural parameters of devices for Gaussian beam shrinks by 12%.On the basis of optimizating some other structures parameters,the design of symmetric diffracted and off-angle beaming effect device for 633 nm Gaussian beam were achieved.
Broadband Optical Concentration Technology Based on Grating Side-Coupling

Abstract:Though the technology of grating side-coupling is often applied in fields, such as coupling of light of single wavelength or narrow waveband, pump of fiber laser, integration of optical waveguide, its application for broadband coupling of visible spectrum is rarely studied. Sunlight can concentrate and output at the edge of waveguides by integrating sub-wavelength gratings with waveguides, making it a novel solar concentrator. In this paper, we simulated different grating structures with the finite-difference time-domain solution software (FDTD) to obtain the optimal structure design, since different grating structures feature different diffractive efficiencies. The result demonstrates that the structures mentioned above all feature good diffractive efficiencies in broadband wavelength, among which the blazing grating reaches the largest efficiency, namely 48.8%. This kind of sub-wavelength gratings feature integration of small size, which makes it promising in absorption of solar energy, such as lumination, photovoltaic cell, space melting, etc.

Abstract:A unidirectional dual-wavelength-band grating coupler with one-dimensional (1D) subwavelength structures is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Inverse optimization method is used for the design and the grating coupler fabricated on the silicon-on-insulator chip can achieve efficient fiber-chip coupling simultaneously in the O-band and the L-band. The peak coupling efficiencies in the two bands are measured to be 19.7% and 19.5% with 3-dB bandwidths of 27 and 38-nm, respectively.

Abstract:Based on the metallic-dielectric high contrast gratings, we proposed two new different schemes to achieve the unidirectional coupling of incident free-space light into the plasmonic waveguides. Using the cascaded metal-air sub-gratings (structure 1) or metallic-dielectric subwavelength periodic gratings (structure 2), the ultra-broadband and wide-angular SPPs excitation could be both achieved. The operation principle and performance of the structures are analyzed and discussed, respectively.

Abstract:We proposed a new type of vertical grating couplers (VGCs) with a compact footprint on the 220-nm silicon-on-insulator platform. The overall size of the device containing the L-shaped coupling grating and the taper with achromatic in-plane metalens is only 45 × 15 µm2, and the measured coupling efficiency at 1550 nm is -5.2 dB with a 1 dB bandwidth of 38 nm, around 1.6 dB higher than the VGC without metalens. The incidence angle mismatch has a 1 dB bandwidth of roughly 4°, whereas the displacement mismatch along the x-/y- axis has a bandwidth of around 3/4 µm. Furthermore, we experimentally show that such a design is compatible with VGCs operating in the S, C, and L bands.

Abstract:A grating coupling scheme from free-space light into silicon waveguide with a remarkable property of wide flat-top angular efficiency is proposed and theoretically investigated. The coupling structure is composed of two cascaded gratings with a proper distance between their peak angular efficiencies. A quantitative semi-analytical theory based on coupled-mode models is developed for performance prediction and validated with the fully vectorial aperiodic Fourier modal method (a-FMM). With the theory, wide flat-top angular response is achieved and the conditions are pointed out. Proof-of-principle demonstrations show that the -1 dB angular width, a figure of merit to evaluate the flat-top performance, is broadened to almost 3 to 4 times, and meanwhile the -3 dB angular width, i.e., angular-full-width-half-maximum (AFWHM), is widened to nearly more than twice, compared with the reference gratings composed of the same number of periodic defects. We believe this work will find applications in biological or chemical sensing and novel optical devices.
High-efficiency Grating Coupler Based on Fast Directional Optimization and Robust Layout Strategy in 130 Nm CMOS Process.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high-efficiency grating coupler by combining an interleaved etch and apodized structure for fiber-to-chip coupling. The grating coupler was optimized using the fast directional optimization method to achieve apodization. The grating coupler utilized a layout strategy involving an extended mask to avoid alignment errors for a multi-etch structure. The coupling efficiency was measured to be -2.2 dB at a wavelength of 1549 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 47 nm. The grating coupler, having no gold reflector, subwavelength index matching structure, or additional material layers, was fabricated using a commercial silicon photonics process with a minimum feature size of 140 nm. This grating coupler design provides a robust and effective coupling scheme and the proposed method can be employed to adopt the design in accordance with standard foundry design rules.

Abstract:We demonstrate hybrid amorphous silicon uniform grating couplers for efficient coupling between the standard single-mode fiber and sub-micron lithium niobate waveguides. The grating couplers exhibit coupling efficiency of -3.06 dB and 1-dB bandwidth of 55 nm. The amorphous silicon grating couplers can also provide a universal building block applicable to other photonic platforms such as silicon nitride waveguides, whose moderate refractive index values prevent high efficiency grating couplers to be fabricated in the native waveguide. Abstract:A high-performance and compact binary blazed subwavelength grating coupler was designed, which consists of the upper grating coupler and the lower layer grating reflector. A large part of light transmitted out to the substrate due to the existence of gratings can be efficiently reflected with normal incidence. Then, the propagating light is augmented and the coupling efficiency obtains its maximum value. By the appropriate choice of grating parameters, including thicknesses, periods, height, and filling factor, a coupling efficiency of beyond 80% at wavelengths from 1.535 to 1.555 mu m is calculated. Finally, the device layout is simple, feasible, and compatible with standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology processing. Abstract:Configuration of a novel compact dispersive and focusing device based on a Curved Waveguide Grating (CWG) is presented, which is essentially an integrated optic wavelength demultiplexer consisting of a curved stripe waveguide with tilted grating, a slab waveguide adjacent to it, and a set of output waveguides locate on focal line of the curved waveguide. Underlying wavelength demultiplexing mechanism of CWG is theoretically illustrated by employing the Fourier optics approach. Analysis shows that device based on CWG possesses fine wavelength resolution, compact configuration, and potentially low cost as well, which make it a promising wavelength demultiplexer, or a network performance monitor, in DWDM optical networks.

Abstract:We theoretically make plausible and numerically verify that when a high-efficiency, polarization-independent grating, designed to work at or near Littrow mounting, is used in conical Littrow mounting, its high efficiency and polarization independence can be very well maintained at a large off-principal-plane deviation angle. This finding provides a new degree of freedom to the design of high-efficiency, more compact spectral beam combining grating systems.

Abstract:A novel grating coupling scheme with simultaneously broadband and wide-angle efficiency for unidirectionally coupling freely propagating light into a silicon waveguide is proposed and theoretically investigated. The coupling structure is composed of two cascaded subgratings with proper spectral and angular intervals. A semi-analytical theory based on coupled-mode model is developed to facilitate the design. Proof-of-principle demonstrations show that the spectral and angular full-width half-maximums (FWHMs) are simultaneously broadened to nearly three times at a specific wavelength or incidence angle, compared with the reference grating of the same number of periodic features. The spectral FWHM reaches 200 nm, covering E + S + C or C + L + U communication bands, and meanwhile, the angular FWHM is up to 8°; if the spectral FWHM is diminished to 40 nm only covering C band, the angular FWHM will be as large as 40° . This paper may be of great interest in related applications such as biochemical sensing and optical interconnect.

Abstract:Directional beaming of electromagnetic waves passing through a subwavelength aperture has attracted considerable interests in photonics, but the traditional approach of utilizing gratings to directionally couple surface waves (SWs) to a desired far-field direction faces the low-efficiency issue owing to high-order diffractions. Here we experimentally demonstrate that directional beaming of light can be realized with very high efficiencies, in which two specifically designed metasurfaces (MTSs) are placed at two sides of the aperture to serve as SW to propagating-wave meta-couplers. Different from the grating couplers, the well-designed phase-gradient meta-couplers can freely select the desired diffraction orders by suppressing the undesired diffraction orders. We design and fabricate MTSs with different phase gradients, and perform both far-field and near-field measurements to verify the predicted high-efficiency on/off-axis directional beaming effects. Abstract:We report on a coupling method, which transfers energy of a light beam from free space into a symmetrical metal-cladding optical waveguide from the top surface without employing the prism, grating, tapered film, and other coupling components. In the experiment, a glass flat with a thickness about 100 μm, sandwiched between two gold films is used as a guiding layer. A top gold film of 46 nm thick serves as a coupling layer as well as the cladding and a base gold film of 200 nm serves as the substrate of the waveguide. Up to 50% of the incident light energy fed into the waveguide has been demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose a design scheme of a nanoslit in metallic film flanked by metal-dielectric surface gratings on the output side for directional beaming of transmitted optical field. Based on the effective excitation of surface plasmon polariton resonance mode in the metallic-dielectric-air/metal waveguide, directional beaming of light can be realized by tuning the surface grating depth. According to our theoretical design, a numerical simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain method was also undertaken, the results obtained match well with the theoretical prediction.
Grating design methodology for tailored free-space beam-forming

Abstract:We present a design methodology for free-space beam-forming with general profiles from grating couplers which avoids the need for numerical optimization, motivated by applications in ion trap physics. We demonstrate its capabilities through a variety of gratings using different wavelengths and waveguide materials, designed for new ion traps with all optics fully integrated, including UV and visible wavelengths. We demonstrate designs for diffraction-limited focusing without restriction on waveguide taper geometry, emission angle, or focus height, as well as focused higher order Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian beams. Additional investigations examine the influence of grating length and taper angle on beam-forming, indicating the importance of focal shift in apertured beams. The design methodology presented allows for efficient design of beamforming gratings with the accuracy as well as the flexibility of beam profile and operating wavelength demanded by application in atomic systems.

Abstract:On-chip channelless diffraction-free beam guiding enables dense integration of optical circuits in a reconfigurable manner, where total internal reflection, which is considered the cornerstone of guided-wave optics, is utilized to confine light in the out-of-plane direction. Here, we theoretically propose a physical mechanism to achieve on-chip channelless diffraction-free beam guiding beyond the light cone, utilizing the physics of bound states in the continuum. A bound state in the continuum with a tailored spatial dispersion plays an important role in cancelling both the in-plane diffraction and the out-of-plane scattering when the condition for total internal reflection is not satisfied. As a proof-of-concept verification, we experimentally demonstrate such an effect based on an all-dielectric platform using microwaves. The on-chip channelless diffraction-free beam guiding beyond the light cone also allows direct free-space coupling to such self-collimation modes. Our results may open up an avenue for exploring the physics and applications of guided-wave optics.

Abstract:Because of the high index contrast, current silicon photonics based optical phased arrays cannot achieve small beam divergence and large field-of-view simultaneously without increasing fabrication complexity. To resolve the dilemma, we propose an ultra-long waveguide grating antenna formed by placing subwavelength segments within the evanescent field of a conventional strip waveguide. Bound state in the continuum effect is leveraged to suppress the sidewall emission. As a proof of concept, we theoretically demonstrated a millimeter-long through-etched waveguide grating antenna with a divergence angle of 0.081° and a feature size compatible with current silicon photonics foundries.

Abstract:A transverse-electric-mode focusing subwavelength grating coupler (FSWGC) is proposed and demonstrated for dual-wavelength-band (DWB) coupling from a single-mode fiber into a suspended-membrane waveguide for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Location and separation of the two coupling peaks can be flexibly tailored based on a proposed design methodology. As a proof of concept, two DWB FSWGCs working at (1486.0, 1594.5) nm and (1481.5, 1661.5) nm are experimentally demonstrated with coupling efficiencies of (18.3%, 20.1%) and (14.5%, 17.5%), 3-dB bandwidths of (55.0, 30.5) nm and (44.0, >39.5) nm, respectively. A DWB FSWGC working at (1480, 1830) nm with a wavelength separation of 350 nm and coupling efficiencies of (38.0%, 33.2%) is also numerically predicted.
