Abstract:Low-frequency bulk instabilities are prevalent phenomena encountered in various combustion systems including laminar burners, gas turbine combustors, rockets, and ramjets. These instabilities, known as bulk or Helmholtz instabilities, are pronounced in combustors with expansive plenums characterized by longer wavelengths. A simplified three-duct system serves as the basis for parametric studies, elucidating the effects of geometrical variations on bulk-mode resonance characteristics. By validating the efficacy of the analytical approach through comparisons with three-dimensional (3D) finite element method (FEM) results, this study extends its investigation to a more intricate three-chamber combustion system. Here, a comprehensive exploration of the Helmholtz mode behavior is undertaken, addressing the limitations of conventional approximations, and proposing solutions to incorporate the boundary conditions and the influence of the Helmholtz frequency. Notably, this study presents a derived formula for the Helmholtz resonant frequency, accounting for the effective neck length, thus providing an understanding of acoustic resonances in complex combustion environments. Detailed analyses of parameters such as the resonator neck and cavity dimensions, along with nozzle geometry variations, revealed nuanced effects on the resonance frequency and mode shape.
