Abstract:We study the spin-dependent thermoelectric transport through a single-molecule-magnet junction in the sequential tunneling regime. It is found that the intrinsic magnetic anisotropy of the single-molecule magnet can lead to gate-voltage-dependent oscillations of charge thermopower and a large violation of the Wiedeman-Franz law. More interestingly, the spin-Seebeck coefficient is shown to be greater than the charge-Seebeck coefficient, and a pure spin thermopower or/and a pure spin current can be obtained by tuning only the gate voltage. It needs neither an external magnetic field or irradiation of circularly polarized light on the molecule nor ferromagnetic leads to realize these interesting effects, indicating the powerful prospect of single-molecule-magnet applications in spintronic devices.

Abstract:The orientational effect concept in a molecular-scale junction is established for asymmetric junctions, which requires the fulfillment of two conditions: (1) design of an asymmetric molecule with strong distinct terminal end groups and (2) construction of a doubly asymmetric junction by placing an asymmetric molecule in an asymmetric junction to form a multicomponent system such as Au/Zn-TPP+M/Au. Here, we demonstrate that molecular-scale junctions that satisfy the conditions of these effects can manifest Seebeck coefficients whose sign fluctuates depending on the orientation of the molecule within the asymmetric junction in a complete theoretical investigation. Three anthracene-based compounds are investigated in three different scenarios, one of which displays a bithermoelectric behavior due to the presence of strong anchor groups, including pyridyl and thioacetate. This bithermoelectricity demonstration implies that if molecules with alternating orientations can be placed between an asymmetric source and drain, they can be potentially utilized for increasing the thermovoltage in molecular-scale thermoelectric energy generators (TEGs).

Abstract:A first-principles approach is presented for the thermoelectricity in molecular junctions formed by a single molecule contact. The study investigates the Seebeck coefficient considering the source-drain electrodes with distinct temperatures and chemical potentials in a three-terminal geometry junction. We compare the Seebeck coefficient in the amino-substituted and unsubstituted butanethiol junction and observe interesting thermoelectric properties in the amino-substituted junction. Due to the novel states around the Fermi levels introduced by the amino-substitution, the Seebeck coefficient could be easily modulated by using gate voltages and biases. When the temperature in one of the electrodes is fixed, the Seebeck coefficient varies significantly with the temperature in the other electrode, and such dependence could be modulated by varying the gate voltages. As the biases increase, richer features in the Seebeck coefficient are observed, which are closely related to the transmission functions in the vicinity of the left and right Fermi levels.

Abstract:Novel organic materials formed from functional molecules are attractive for various nanoelectronic applications because they are environmentally friendly, widely available and inexpensive. Recent advancement in bottom-up fabrication methods has made it possible to design and synthesis functional molecules with desired functionalities and engineer their properties precisely. This requires deeper understanding of if the properties of building blocks e.g. single molecules can be translated to many molecule junctions in the form of self-assembled monolayers (SAM). Therefore, understanding the effect of intermolecular interaction becomes important. In this paper, we study the effect of intermolecular interactions on the charge transport and thermoelectric properties of junctions formed by parallel molecules between metallic electrodes. We demonstrate that the electrical conductance and Seebeck coefficient are enhanced simultaneously leading to more than an order of magnitude enhancement of power factor as a result of intermolecular coupling between two molecules of the same kind or different. This strategy can be used to improve the thermoelectric performance of SAMs by engineering their packing density.

Abstract:Thermoelectric phenomena can be strongly modified in nanostructures. The determination of the Seebeck coefficient (S) in nanomaterials is a challenge since the mechanisms are different from the bulk. Here, we demonstrate a strong variation in S induced by electron-phonon interactions. Microscopic mechanisms are identified by using thermoelectric voltage dependencies as fingerprints. We found that different mechanisms can dominate, depending on the hybrid system. Our improved understanding will contribute to the future control of thermoelectric effects on nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We studied the thermoelectric coefficients (Seebeck and thermal conductance)of FeCo|MgO|FeCo(001) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) from first principles using a generalized Landauer-Büttiker formalism. FeCo|MgO|FeCo(001) MTJs usually yield smaller thermoelectric effects compared with epitaxial Fe|MgO|Fe(001) MTJs. The (magneto-) Seebeck effect is sensitive to the details of the FeCo$|$MgO interfaces. Interfacial oxygen vacancies (OVs) can enhance the thermoelectric effects in MTJs greatly. We also compute angular dependent Seebeck coefficients that provide more information about the transport physics. We report large deviations from the Wiedemann-Franz law at room temperature.

Abstract:<p>Organic molecular devices are promising candidates for thermoelectric applications. By using density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Green's function method, we have investigated the thermoelectric properties of a single-molecule junction, which is constructed by 2,7-dialkyl <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#b0005">[1]</a> benzothieno [3,2-b] <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#b0005">[1]</a> benzothiophene derivatives (C<sub>n</sub>-BTBT) connected with zigzag graphene nanoribbon electrodes. It is found that the phonon thermal conductance decreases with the increase of alkyl edge branches due to the local resonance. And the thermoelectric performance can be enhanced significantly by substituting bithiophene or biphosphole bridge anchor groups. A good thermoelectric figure of merit about 0.56 can be obtained near Fermi level. Moreover, we also found that the molecular device can be changed from p-type into n-type by changing the contact points, resulting in the transformation of Seebeck coefficient from positive to negative.</p>

Abstract:Thermoelectric energy conversion is perhaps the most promising of the potential applications of molecular electronics. Ultimately, it is desirable for this technology to operate at around room temperature, and it is therefore important to consider the role of dissipative effects in these conditions. Here, we develop a theory of thermoelectricity which accounts for the vibrational coupling within the framework of the Marcus theory. We demonstrate that the inclusion of lifetime broadening is necessary in the theoretical description of this phenomenon. We further show that the Seebeck coefficient and the power factor decrease with increasing reorganization energy and identify the optimal operating conditions in the case of non-zero reorganization energy. Finally, with the aid of density functional theory calculations, we consider a prototypical fullerene-based molecular junction. We estimate the maximum power factor that can be obtained in this system and confirm that C60 is an excellent candidate for thermoelectric heat-to-energy conversion. This work provides general guidance that should be followed in order to achieve high-efficiency molecular thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:We report thermoelectric transport studies on Bi2Se3 topological insulator thin films with varied thickness grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We find that the Seebeck coefficient and thermoelectric power factor decrease systematically with the reduction of film thickness. These experimental observations can be explained quantitatively by theoretical calculations based on realistic electronic band structure of the Bi2Se3 thin films. This work illustrates the crucial role played by the topological surface states on the thermoelectric transport of topological insulators, and sheds new light on further improvement of their thermoelectric performance.
Gate Voltage Controlled Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in Three-Dimensional Topological Insulator Nanowires

Abstract:The thermoelectric properties of the surface states in three-dimensional topological insulator nanowires are studied. The Seebeck coefficients S-c and the dimensionless thermoelectrical figure of merit ZT are obtained by using the tight-binding Hamiltonian combined with the nonequilibrium Green's-function method. They are strongly dependent on the gate voltage and the longitudinal and perpendicular magnetic fields. By changing the gate voltage or magnetic fields, the values of S-c and ZT can be easily controlled. At zero magnetic field and zero gate voltage, or at large perpendicular magnetic field and nonzero gate voltage, ZT has a large value. Owing to the electron-hole symmetry, S-c is an odd function of the Fermi energy while ZT is an even function regardless of the magnetic fields. S-c and ZT show peaks when the quantized transmission coefficient jumps from one plateau to another. The highest peak appears while the Fermi energy is near the Dirac point. At zero perpendicular magnetic field and zero gate voltage, the height of the nth peak of S-c is kb/eIn2/(vertical bar n vertical bar + 1/2) and kb/eIn2 vertical bar n vertical bar for the longitudinal magnetic flux phi(parallel to) = 0 and pi, respectively. Finally, we also study the effect of disorder and find that S-c and ZT are robust against disorder. In particular, the large value of ZT can survive even at strong disorder. These characteristics (that ZT has a large value, is easily regulated, and is robust against the disorder) are very beneficial for the application of thermoelectricity.
Understanding the Temperature Dependence of the Seebeck Coefficient from First-Principles Band Structure Calculations for Organic Thermoelectric Materials

Abstract:The Seebeck effect measures the electric potential built up in materials under a temperature gradient. For organic thermoelectric materials, the Seebeck coefficient shows more complicated temperature dependence than conventional systems, with both monotonic increases and nonmonotonic behavior, that is, first increasing and then decreasing. The mechanism behind the phenomenon is intriguing. Through first-principles calculations coupled with the Boltzmann transport equation, we demonstrate typical trends of the Seebeck coefficient with respect to temperature through band structure analysis. The bandgap and bandwidths of the valence band and conduction band jointly determine the effectiveness of thermal activation. Ineffective or effective thermal activation leads to a one-or a two-band transport behavior, respectively. Under the thermal-activation mechanism, Seebeck coefficient shows monotonic temperature dependence in a one-band model but nonmonotonic relationship in a two-band model. In particular, in the two-band model, Seebeck coefficient might show an ambipolar behavior, that is, its sign changes at high temperature.

Abstract:Molecular junctions are a versatile test bed for investigating thermoelectricity on the nanoscale1-10 and contribute to the design of new cost-effective environmentally-friendly organic thermoelectric materials11. It has been suggested that transport resonances associated with the discrete molecular levels would play a key role in the thermoelectric performance12,13, but no direct experimental evidence has been reported. Here we study single-molecule junctions of the endohedral fullerene Sc3N@C80 connected to gold electrodes using a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). We find that the magnitude and sign of the thermopower depend strongly on the orientation of the molecule and on applied pressure. Our theoretical calculations show that the Sc3N inside the fullerene cage creates a sharp resonance near the Fermi level, whose energetic location and hence the thermopower can be tuned by applying pressure. These results reveal that Sc3N@C80 is a bi-thermoelectric material, exhibiting both positive and negative thermopower, and provide an unambiguous demonstration of the importance of transport resonances in molecular junctions.

Abstract:Improving the thermoelectric figure of merit zT is one of the greatest challenges in material science. The recent discovery of topological insulators (TIs) offers new promise in this prospect. In this work, we demonstrate theoretically that zT is strongly size dependent in TIs, and the size parameter can be tuned to enhance zT to be significantly greater than 1. Furthermore, we show that the lifetime of the edge states in TIs is strongly energy dependent, leading to large and anomalous Seebeck effects with an opposite sign to the Hall effect. These striking properties make TIs a promising material for thermoelectric science and technology.
Do Thermoelectric Materials in Nanojunctions Display Material Property or Junction Property?

Abstract:The miniaturization of thermoelectric nanojunctions raises a fundamental question: do the thermoelectric quantities of the bridging materials in nanojunctions remain to display material properties or show junction properties? In order to answer this question, we investigate the Seebeck coefficient $S$ and the thermoelectric figure of merit $ZT$ especially in relation to the length characteristics of the junctions from the first-principles approaches. For $S$, the metallic atomic chains reveal strong length characteristics related to strong hybridization in the electronic structures between the atoms and electrodes, while the insulating molecular wires display strong material properties due to the cancelation of exponential scalings in the DOSs. For $ZT$, the atomic wires remain to show strong junction properties. However, the length chrematistics of the insulation molecular wires depend on a characteristic temperature $T_{0}= \sqrt{\beta/\gamma(l)}$ around 10K. When $T \ll T_{0}$, where the electron transport dominates the thermal current, the molecular junctions remain to show material properties. When $T \gg T_{0}$, where the phonon transport dominates the thermal current, the molecular junctions display junction properties.

Abstract:To realize a thermoelectric power generator, typically a junction between two materials with different Seebeck coefficient needs to be fabricated. Such difference in Seebeck coefficients can be induced by doping, which renders difficult when working with two-dimensional (2d) materials. Here, we employ substrate effects to form a thermoelectric junction in ultra-thin few-layer MoS2 films. We investigated the junctions with a combination of scanning photocurrent microscopy and scanning thermal microscopy. This allows us to reveal that thermoelectric junctions form across the substrate-engineered parts. We attribute this to a gating effect induced by interfacial charges in combination with alterations in the electron-phonon scattering mechanisms. This work demonstrates that substrate engineering is a promising strategy to develop future compact thin-film thermoelectric power generators.

Abstract:Rational design and adjustment of flexible thermoelectric devices are key points for sustainable and effective thermoelectric conversion, which remains a fundamental challenge due to inherent high thermal conductivity and uncontrolled carrier concentration induced by non-uniform dispersion. Under ingenious combination of weakly-coupled hollow interface and nanotube structure, thermoelectric performance of a dumbbell-like molecular junction comprised of a phenyl-terminated polyyne as central molecule and two semi-infinite 1D single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) as electrodes has been investigated at certain twisted angles (& theta;). The results indicate that molecule twisting can be reviewed as an effective thermoelectric switch to coordinatingly control electronic and phononic transmission properties simultaneously. Resonance of molecular discrete state and electrode continuous state leads to low thermal conductance, which is sensitively affected by twist angle. Meanwhile, cyclic transformation between p-type and n-type flexible thermoelectrics can be realized by manipulating twist angle in a certain period of rotation. Thermoelectric performance of such a molecular junction can be further improved by boron atom doping at head-to-tail positions, and an excellent figure of merit (ZT = 1.75) is observed near Fermi level under 25 & DEG; twisted angle. This result inspires an effective strategy to modulate and control thermoelectric conversion, which will greatly broaden applications in thermoelectric twistronics.
Extraordinary Thermoelectric Properties of Topological Surface States in Quantum-Confined Cd3As2 Thin Films

Abstract:Topological insulators and semimetals have been shown to possess intriguing thermoelectric properties promising for energy harvesting and cooling applications. However, thermoelectric transport associated with the Fermi arc topological surface states on topological Dirac semimetals remains less explored. In this work, we systematically examine thermoelectric transport in a series of topological Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Surprisingly, we find significantly enhanced Seebeck effect and anomalous Nernst effect at cryogenic temperatures when the Cd3As2 layer is thin. Combining angle-dependent quantum oscillation analysis, magnetothermoelectric measurement, transport modelling and first-principles simulation, we isolate the contributions from bulk and surface conducting channels and attribute the unusual thermoeletric properties to the topological surface states. Our analysis showcases the rich thermoelectric transport physics in quantum-confined topological Dirac semimetal thin films and suggests new routes to achieving high thermoelectric performance at cryogenic temperatures.

Abstract:We report transport studies on (Bi,Sb)2Te3 topological insulator thin films with tunable electronic band structure. We find a doping and temperature regime in which the Hall coefficient is negative indicative of electron-type carriers, whereas the Seebeck coefficient is positive indicative of hole-type carriers. This sign anomaly is due to the distinct transport behaviors of the bulk and surface states: the surface Dirac fermions dominate magnetoelectric transport while the thermoelectric effect is mainly determined by the bulk states. These findings may inspire new ideas for designing topological insulator-based high efficiency thermoelectric devices.
