Abstract:We study two determinants involving tangent and cotangent functions and prove two conjectures made by Zhi-Wei Sun in 2019. Both determinants are divisible by the first factor of the class numbers of associated cyclotomic fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we study certain determinants involving tangent functions. We prove that for any odd number n >= 3 and s is an element of Z(+), the determinant D(n,s) = det(tan(s)pi j+k/n)(1 <= j,k <= n-1) is an element of n(n-2)Z. In the special case s = 2, we confirm a conjecture raised by Zhi-Wei Sun in 2019.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $a,b\in\mathbb Z$ with $p\nmid ab$. In this paper we mainly evaluate $$T_p^{(\delta)}(a,b,x):=\det\left[x+\tan\pi\frac{aj^2+bk^2}p\right]_{\delta\le j,k\le (p-1)/2}\ \ (\delta=0,1).$$ For example, in the case $p\equiv3\pmod4$ we show that $T_p^{(1)}(a,b,0)=0$ and $$T_p^{(0)}(a,b,x)=\begin{cases} 2^{(p-1)/2}p^{(p+1)/4}&\text{if}\ (\frac{ab}p)=1, \\p^{(p+1)/4}&\text{if}\ (\frac{ab}p)=-1,\end{cases}$$ where $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ is the Legendre symbol. When $(\frac{-ab}p)=-1$, we also evaluate the determinant $\det[x+\cot\pi\frac{aj^2+bk^2}p]_{1\le j,k\le(p-1)/2}.$ In addition, we pose several conjectures one of which states that for any prime $p\equiv3\pmod4$ there is an integer $x_p\equiv1\pmod p$ such that $$\det\left[\sec2\pi\frac{(j-k)^2}p\right]_{0\le j,k\le p-1}=-p^{(p+3)/2}x_p^2.$$

On the numerology of trigonometric polynomials

Abstract:This note is about the observation that the various transition formulas between bases of trigonometric polynomials can be expressed in terms binomial coefficients. More specifically, we write the entries of the Chebyshev matrices $ T$ and $ U$ in terms of binomial coefficients. We remark that the inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ T$ correspond to classical power reduction formulas for trigonometric functions. Therefore the entries of $ T^{-1}$ are expressible in terms of binomial coefficients and powers of two. The inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ U$ appear in power reduction formulas involving the Catalan triangles. We could not spot them in the literature. As a corollary the Catalan triangles are interpreted as inverses of rather natural matrices of binomial coefficients. We explain the matrix inversions in terms of Riordan arrays. We solve the integral $ \int _{0}^{2\pi }\cos^{2m}( x)\sin^{2n}( x) dx$ and deduce a hypergeometric identity from the Fourier expansion of $\cos^{2m}(x)$ and $ \sin^{2n}( x)$. As a corollary we prove that super Catalan numbers are integers. We emphasize that from the point of view of these base changes between the trigonometric polynomials it is more natural to work with $2\cos(x)$ and $2\sin(x)$ instead of $\cos(x)$ and $\sin(x)$, since the transition matrices become invertible over the integers. We do a similar analysis for the spread polynomials. This enables us to make a conjecture of Goh and Wildberger more precise. In this exposition we give a mostly self-contained account of the matter, the prerequisites just being four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, elementary complex variables and the residue theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we study some conjectures on determinants with Jacobi symbol entries posed by Z.-W. Sun. For any positive integer n≡3(mod4), we show that(6,1)n=[6,1]n=(3,2)n=[3,2]n=0 and(4,2)n=(8,8)n=(3,3)n=(21,112)n=0 as conjectured by Sun, where(c,d)n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|1≤i,j≤n−1 and[c,d]n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|0≤i,j≤n−1 with (⋅n) the Jacobi symbol. We also prove that (10,9)p=0 for any prime p≡5(mod12), and [5,5]p=0 for any prime p≡13,17(mod20), which were also conjectured by Sun. Our proofs involve character sums over finite fields.

Abstract:In this paper we confirm three conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on determinants. We first show that any odd integer n> 3 divides the determinant vertical bar(i(2) + dj(2)) (i(2) + dj(2)/n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <=(n-1)/2), where d is any integer and (center dot/n) is the Jacobi symbol. Then we prove some divisibility results concerning vertical bar(i + dj)(n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <= n-1) and vertical bar(i(2) + dj(2))(n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <= n-1), where d not equal 0 and n> 2 are integers. Finally, for any odd prime p and integers c and d with p inverted iota cd, we determine completely the Legendre symbol (S-c(d,p)/p), where S-c(d, p) := vertical bar(i(2)+dj(2)+c/p)vertical bar(1 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2).

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime and $(\frac{.}{p})$ be the Legendre symbol. For any integer $d$ with $p\nmid d$ and any positive integer $m$, Sun introduced the determinants $$T_m(d,p)=\det\left[(i^2+dj^2)^m\left(\frac{i^2+dj^2}{p}\right)\right]_{1\leqslant i,j \leqslant (p-1)/2},$$ and $$D_p^{(m)}= \det\left[(i^2-j^2)^m\left(\frac{i^2-j^2}{p}\right)\right]_{1\leq i,j\leq (p-1)/2} .$$ In this paper, we obtain some properties of $T_m (d,p)$ and $ \sqrt{D_p^{(m)}}$ for some $m$. We also confirm some related conjectures posed by Zhi-Wei Sun.

Abstract:In this paper, we study arithmetic properties of certain determinants involving powers of $i^2+cij+dj^2$, where $c$ and $d$ are integers. For example, for any odd integer $n>1$ with $(\frac dn)=-1$ we prove that $\det [ (\frac{i^2+cij+dj^2}{n})]_{0\le i,j\le n-1}$ is divisible by $\varphi(n)^2$, where $(\frac{\cdot}{n})$ is the Jacobi symbol and $\varphi$ is Euler's totient function. This confirms a previous conjecture of the second author.

Abstract:Abstract We establish a series of relations between the numbers of solutions of some positive definite ternary quadratic forms and the class numbers of the corresponding imaginary quadratic fields. Abstract:In this paper, we obtain some novel identities involving trigonometric functions. Let n be any positive odd integer. We mainly show that Sigma(n-1)(r=0) 1/1 + sin 2 pi x+r/n + cos 2 pi x+r/n = (-1)(n-1)/2n 1 + (-1)(n-1)/2 sin 2px + cos 2px for any complex number with x + 1/2, x + (-1)((n-1)/2)/4 is not an element of Z, and Sigma(n-1)(j,k=0) 1/sin 2 pi x+j/n + sin 2 pi y+k/n = (-1)((n-1)/2)n(2)/sin2 pi x + sin2 pi y for all complex numbers x and y with x+y, x- y- 1/2 is not an element of Z. We also determine the values of Pi((p-1)/2)(k=1)(1 + tan pi k(2)/p) and Pi((p-1)/2)(k=1) (1 + cot pi k(2)/p) for any odd prime p. In addition, we pose several conjectures on the values of Pi((p-1)/2)(k=1)(x- e(2 pi ik2)/p) with p an odd prime and x a root of unity.
A new trigonometric identity with applications

Abstract:In this paper we obtain a new curious identity involving trigonometric functions. Namely, for any positive odd integer $n$ we prove that $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^k(\cot kx)\sin k(n-k)x=\frac{1-n}2,$$ which is equivalent to the identity $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^kU_{n-k}(\cos kx)=-\frac{n+1}2,$$ where $U_m(z)$ stands for the $m$th Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind. As a consequence, for any positive odd integer $n$ and positive integer $m$ we obtain $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^kk^{2m}B_{2m+1}\left(\frac{n-k}2\right)=0,$$ where $B_j(x)$ denotes the Bernoulli polynomial of degree $j$.

Abstract:In this paper, we define the generalized Toeplitz determinants whose entries are the coefficients of holomorphic functions on the unit disk with k -fold symmetric, and then we establish the sharp bounds of the generalized determinants formed over the related terms of homogeneous expansion of a class of holomorphic mappings defined on the unit ball of a complex Banach space. The results presented here would generalize the corresponding results given by Giri and Kumar (Complex Anal Oper Theory 17(6):86, 2023).
