Abstract:In this paper, experiments were carried out to study the flame spread and combustion characteristics of double parallel polyethylene (PE) wires (type I and type II with copper core diameters of 6 mm and 8 mm, and polyethylene thickness of 2 mm, respectively) with different currents (0 A-60 A) and spacing distances (3 mm to 18 mm). It was found that, with the increase of spacing, the flame changed from "continuous merging" to "intermittent merging", then to "non-merging" stage for each current. Especially, when the current was 40A, the flame merging probability was promoted larger than others, due to the greater effective burning. The flame spread rate (FSR) of double wires gradually decreased with the increase of the distance, and finally decreased to the value of a single wire. This is attributed to that, the flame width showed the similar trend with FSR for type I and type II, which will eventually decide the heat transfer, even for the charged wires. While the flame height of type I shows an increased and then decreased trend, which is different from type II with the monotonous decrease. Finally, the flame spread model of the double-wire flame spread is established based on heat transfer components, which can well reveal the mechanism of FSR with current and spacing.
