Abstract:Cobalt-free fluorine doped Bi0.7Sr0.3FeO3- δ-x F x oxides are presented here as cathode catalysts of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). Their crystal structure, thermal behaviors, catalytic activity, oxygen transport properties, oxygen reduction kinetics, long-term stability and CO2 tolerance are systematically exploited. At 600 °C, the optimized Bi0.7Sr0.3FeO2.9- δ F0.10 (BSFF0.10) cathode possesses outstanding ORR activity with a low polarization resistance of 0.12 Ω cm2. When tested under realistic conditions, the anode-supported fuel cell with BSFF0.10 cathode delivers a high output of 837 mW cm−2 with stable operation for 110 h. Such outstanding performance can be ascribed to the improved oxygen transport kinetics, larger oxygen vacancy concentration, increased oxygen surface adsorption energy, and O 2p-band centers close to the Fermi level. In addition, the oxygen reduction process on BSFF0.10 electrode interface is mainly determined to be the dissociation of adsorbed molecule oxygen processes. The BSFF0.10 cathode exhibits superior CO2 tolerance because of the lower basicity resulting from the presence of Bi3+, Fe2+/Fe3+/Fe4+ and F−. Although the BSFF0.10 cathode is not reactive with CO2 to form carbonate species, post-characterizations reveal that the CO2 atmosphere can induce the migration of Bi ions to the surface, which in turn affects the performance of the cathode. These results show that fluorine doping is an effective approach to develop highly active and robust cathode for SOFCs.

Abstract:La0.4Bi0.4Sr0.2FeO3-δ (LBSF) has previously been demonstrated to show the highest electrochemical performance in a series of bismuth doped lanthanum strontium ferrite La0.8-xBixSr0.2FeO3-δ where 0≤x≤0.8as the cathode for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. The cobalt-free electrocatalyst LBSF is further investigated in the present study using thermogravimetric analysis, oxygen temperature-programmed desorption method, iodometric titration and high-temperature X-ray diffraction refinement methods to reveal its structural properties including oxygen non-stoichiometry coefficient (δ), valence state of Fe, and lattice parameters at the different temperatures. In addition, the oxygen reduction process on the single phase LBSF is explored using the distribution of relaxation time method based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements conducted in oxygen partial pressure from 0.01 to 1.0atm. The LBSF cathode electrochemical performance is effectively improved by cooperating Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SDC), an oxygen ion conductor, resulting in interfacial polarization resistance less than 0.1Ω cm2at 700°C when SDC is used as the electrolyte.

Abstract:High catalytic activity of cathode material is one of the key requirements for the practical application of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Here we designed and evaluated a novel non-metal P-doped (Bi, Sr)FeO3−δ, i.e., Bi0.5Sr0.5Fe0.95P0.05O3−δ (BSFP) oxide, as cathode material. BSFP with a cubic structure presents excellent chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC) electrolyte after sintering at 1100 °C. Impedance analysis reveals its polarization resistance (Rp) is as low as 0.18 Ω cm2 at 700 °C. Further kinetics study suggests the low-frequency process is the rate-limiting step of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). An anode-supported single cell delivers attractive power output of 0.56 W cm−2 at 700 °C. The electroactivity is superior to undoped (Bi, Sr)FeO3−δ, indicating that BSFP perovskite could be a promising cathode for SOFC operating at intermediate temperatures.

Abstract:A series of new oxides with the nominal composition of SmxSr1−xCo1−yCeyO3−δ (x=0.1, 0.3, 0.5; y=0.05, 0.1) were synthesized. Their crystal structure, morphology, thermal expansion and electrochemical properties were systematically investigated. A phase-pure perovskite-type Sm0.3Sr0.7Co0.95Ce0.05O3−δ oxide is obtained, while the other samples are actually composed of B-site cation deficient SmxSr1−xCo1−yCey−zO3−δ (0<z<y) and CeO2 mixed phases. These two-phase samples exhibit larger oxygen nonstoichiometry (δ) and higher average thermal expansion coefficients (TEC), while the single-phase Sm0.3Sr0.7Co0.95Ce0.05O3−δ oxide shows a smaller δ and a lower TEC as compared to Sm0.3Sr0.7CoO3−δ. The introduction of cerium also effectively suppresses the chemical expansion and the growth of grain particles. The smaller grain size is beneficial in improving the electrode surface area. In addition, the electrical conductivities of Ce-doped SmxSr1−xCoO3−δ are all higher than 200Scm−1. EIS tests demonstrate that partially substituting Co with Ce and the B-site deficiency improve the cathode performance. Sm0.3Sr0.7Co0.95Ce0.05O3−δ shows the lowest area specific resistance (ASR) among the others. Through proper cobalt-site cerium doping, the SmxSr1−xCoO3−δ related oxides could be developed into promising cathode materials for SOFC.

Abstract:Bi2O3 doped BaFeO3−δ on the B-site as a cobalt free perovskite cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells is evaluated. The BaFe1−xBixO3−δ (BFBx) powders are synthesized by solid state reaction. It is found that Bi2O3 doping stabilizes the BaFeO3 cubic phase. The new cathode is compatible with Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 even calcined at 1000 °C for 10 h. The electronic conductivity shows a transformation from semiconductor to metal conductor, and achieves its maximum value of 28.1 S cm−1 for BFB10 at 800 °C. The δ is as high as 0.408 for BFB10 determined by iodometric titration. This leads to the free volume in crystal lattice of BFB10 21.60% higher than that of BaNb0.05Fe0.95O3−δ. The area specific resistance is only 0.133 Ω cm2 for BFB10 at 750 °C and the average TEC is 26.697 × 10−6 K−1 measured from room temperature to 800 °C. The peak power density of Ni-YSZ|YSZ|GDC|BFB10 cell is 646.28 mW cm−2 at 750 °C, higher than that of single cell using LSCF as cathode. These show that BFBx perovskite oxides with cubic phase are promising cathodes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:In response to the shortcomings of cobalt-rich cathodes, iron-based perovskite oxides appear as promising alternatives for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). However, their inferior electrochemical performance at reduced temperatures (< 700 °C) becomes a major bottleneck for future progress. Here, a novel cobalt-free perovskite Ba0.75Sr0.25Fe0.875Ga0.125O3−δ (BSFG) is developed as an efficient oxygen reduction electrode for SOFCs, featuring cubic-symmetry structure, large oxygen vacancy concentration and fast oxygen transport. Benefiting from these merits, cells incorporated with BSFG achieve exceptionally high electrochemical performance, as evidenced by a low polarization area-specific resistance of 0.074 Ω cm2 and a high peak power density of 1145 mW cm−2 at 600 °C. Meanwhile, a robust short-term performance stability of BSFG cathode can be ascribed to the stable crystalline structure and favorable thermal expansion behavior. First-principles computations are also conducted to understanding the superior activity and durability toward oxygen reduction reaction. These pave the way for rationally developing highly active and robust cobalt-free perovskite-type cathode materials for reduced-temperature SOFCs.

Abstract:(Ba0.5Sr0.5)1+xCo0.8Fe0.2O3−δ, or BSCF(1+x), (0⩽x⩽0.3) oxides were synthesized and investigated as cathodes for intermediate-temperature solid-oxide fuel cells. The A-site cation excess in BSCF(1+x) resulted in a lattice expansion and the creation of more active sites for oxygen reduction reaction due to the lowered valence states of the B-site ions and the increased oxygen vacancy concentration, which improved the oxygen adsorption process. On the other hand, the A-site excess could also result in higher resistances for oxygen adsorption (due to the formation of BaO and/or SrO impurities), and oxygen-ion transfer (by facilitating the solid-phase reaction between the cathode and the electrolyte). By taking all these factors into account, we found BSCF1.03 to be the optimal composition, which lead to a peak power density of 1026.2±12.7mWcm−2 at 650°C for a single cell.

Abstract:A key need for the advancement of high-performance solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is to develop viable cathode materials with high electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at reduced operating temperatures below 700 degrees C. Here, we report a Ni-substituted perovskite composition Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.7Fe0.2Ni0.1O3- (BSCFN) as a potential cathode material focusing on enhancing the electrochemical performance. Considerable attention is paid to the research of physicochemical properties primarily by crystal structure and oxygen transport measurements, with the aim to build up the correlation with the ORR activity. With the BSCFN cathode, a symmetrical cell achieves a very low area-specific polarization resistance of only approximate to 0.018 cm(2) and a single cell delivers a maximum power density as high as approximate to 1.8 W cm(-2) at 650 degrees C. Such a large electrode performance improvement is attributed to the sustained cubic-symmetry perovskite structure and fast oxygen kinetics promoted by Ni substitution. The desirable ORR activity and durability highlight the potential of BSCFN as a highly promising oxygen electrode for reduced-temperature SOFCs.

Abstract:The potential utilization of the cobalt-free fluorine-doped LaBa0.5Sr0.5Fe2O5.875-δF0.125 oxide as a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode candidate is investigated and assessed. The polarization resistance of the LaBa0.5Sr0.5Fe2O5.875-δF0.125 cathode is 0.089 Ω cm2 at 750 °C, and meanwhile, a larger power density of the electrolyte-supported single cell with the LaBa0.5Sr0.5Fe2O5.875-δF0.125 cathode is 511 mWcm−2. In addition, the electrode still possesses a better stability after 120 h operation. Combining with the oxygen reduction kinetics research and the corresponding distribution of relaxation time analysis, rate-determining steps are further defined. Current research results indicate that the LaBa0.5Sr0.5Fe2O5.875-δF0.125 sample is an attractive cathode for SOFCs.
High-Performance Srnb0.1co0.9-Xfexo3-Delta Perovskite Cathodes For Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:Chemical to electrical energy conversion using a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) becomes more practical as the operating temperature is lowered to 600 degrees C and below. Given the thermally activated nature of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode side, development of cathode catalysts with very low polarisation resistance is essential. Here, we showed that partial substitution of Co within SrNb0.1Co0.9O3-delta by Fe (up to 0.5) triggers the formation of oxygen non-stoichiometry while preserving the primitive cubic lattice, thus substantially enhancing the ORR performance below 600 degrees C (relative to the parent compound). Close correlation between the oxygen non-stoichiometry and ORR activity trends was found to some extent. SrNb0.1Co0.7Fe0.2O3-delta (SNCF0.2) cathode exhibits a very low area specific resistance value of 0.052 Omega cm(2) at 600 degrees C which translates to superior fuel cell performance, e. g. peak power density of 1587 mW cm(-2) at 600 degrees C. Moreover, the synergistic relationship between ORR activity, thermal expansion coefficient and enhanced CO2 resistance attests to the significance of the SNCF cathode. The last attribute is envisioned as a dominant factor for applications using alternative fuels (e. g. CO which normally contains CO2) and in a portable single-chamber SOFC.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer great promise as sustainable energy conversion devices due to their high chemical-to electrical conversion efficiency, flexible fuel sources, and low pollutions. In recent years, much effort has been devoted to developing intermediate temperature SOFCs. Central to the devices is the availability of a highly effective electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction with reduced temperature operation, especially below 600 degrees C. Here we present a novel B-site Y-doped perovskite-type oxide BaCo0.7Fe0.22Y0.08O3-delta (BCFY) with extremely low polarization resistances (e.g., 0.10 Omega cm(2) at 550 degrees C), which is ascribed to high cubic symmetry structure and fast oxygen kinetics. The superior electrocatalytic activity and stability enable BCFY to be a promising cathode candidate toward the application of reduced temperature SOFCs.

Abstract:A series of cobalt-free and low cost BaCexFe1−xO3−δ (x=0.15, 0.50, 0.85) materials are successful synthesized and used as the cathode materials for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The single cell, consisting of a BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY7)-NiO anode substrate, a BZCY7 anode functional layer, a BZCY7 electrolyte membrane and a BaCexFe1−xO3−δ cathode layer, is assembled and tested from 600 to 700°C with humidified hydrogen (∼3% H2O) as the fuel and the static air as the oxidant. Within all the cathode materials above, the cathode BaCe0.5Fe0.5O3−δ shows the highest cell performance which could obtain an open-circuit potential of 0.99V and a maximum power density of 395mWcm−2 at 700°C. The results indicate that the Fe-doped barium cerates can be promising cathodes for proton-conducting SOFCs.

Abstract:Cobalt-free materials with triple conductivity are considered potential cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). We applied Zn to improve the hydration ability and redox activity of a traditional barium-ferrite (BFO) cathode, in order to improve the performance of the proton conductor-based SOFC (H-SOFC). Evidence suggests that the performance of BFO cathode is improved by Zn-doping. The single cell with BaFe0.8Zn0.1Bi0.1O3-delta (BFZB) as the cathode can achieve 816.26 mW cm(-2) at 700 degrees C after Zn-doping. Coupled with the impregnation method, cell performance with BFZB nanoparticles as the cathode was further improved to 1138.21 mW cm(-2) at 700 degrees C. The new cobalt-free cathode has excellent performance, which is even comparable to that of some cobalt-containing cathodes and thus worthy of further investigations.

Abstract:The purpose is to develop alternative alkaline-earth-free quasi-ternary LaCoO3-LaNiO3-LaFeO3 cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which demonstrate high electrical conductivity, good electrochemical performance and excellent chemical stability against CrO2(OH)(2) released from the metallic interconnects at operation temperatures. Three different perovskites of lanthanum in combination with iron, cobalt and nickel oxides, i.e. LaFe0.8Co0.1Ni0.1O3-delta (LFCN), LaNi0.8Co0.1Fe0.1O3-delta (LNCF) and LaCo0.8Fe0.1Ni0.1O3-delta (LCFN), were synthesized by the modified Pechini method, and then systematically investigated in the phase structure, thermal expansion, electrical conductivity and catalytic activity. LFCN have the best combination to the requirements of high-performance cathodes for SOFCs. Button cells with LFCN cathode were prepared on anodesupported YSZ electrolyte with gadolinium-doped cerium (GDC) buffer layer by screen printing. Excellent electrochemical performance with high maximum power density of 643 mW.cm(-2) at 750 degrees C and corresponding low polarization resistance of 0.62 Omega cm(2) further demonstrate that LFCN is a very competitive candidate as SOFC cathode.

Abstract:A cobalt-free perovskite oxide Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe0.8Cu0.2O3−δ (BSFC) is employed as a cathode material for intermediate-temperature proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells. Symmetrical electrochemical cell with the configuration of BSFC-BZCY/BZCY/BSFC-BZCY is applied for the impedance study. The single cell, consisting of BSFC-BZCY/BZCY/NiO-BZCY structure, is assembled and tested from 600 to 700 °C with humidified hydrogen (∼3% H2O) as the fuel and the static air as the oxidant. A maximum power density of 430 mW cm−2 is obtained at 700 °C for the single cell. Long-term stability of the BSFC-BZCY/BZCY/NiO-BZCY single cell at 600 °C for 40 h has also been studied. Preliminary results demonstrat that cobalt-free oxide BSFC is a very promising cathode for application in proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:A novel cobalt-free cubic perovskite SrFe0.95Nb0.05O3-delta (SFNb) was synthesized and investigated as cathode for proton-conducting solid state fuel cell (H-SOFC) with BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-delta (BZCY) as the electrolyte. Anode supported NiO-BZCY/BZCY/SFNb cell was fabricated and the performance was investigated. A peak power density of 538 mW cm(-2) and a low polarization resistance of 0.23 Omega cm(2) were obtained at 650 degrees C with hydrogen as the fuel and air as the oxidant. Abstract:BaxSr1−xCoyFe1−yO3−δ (BSCF) materials with perovskite structure were synthesized via solid-state reaction. Their structural characteristics, electrical-conduction behavior and cathode performance were investigated. Compared to A-site elements, B-site elements show a wide solid-solution range in BSCF. The electrical-conduction behavior of BSCF obeys the small polaron-hopping mechanism. An increase of Ba or Co content in the BSCF samples results in a decrease of electrical conductivity, which is mainly attributable to the preferential existence of B3+ rather than B4+ in Ba- or Co-rich samples. At the same time, this leads to increases in the lattice parameter a and the number of oxygen vacancies. BSCF samples with high Ba content show a high structural stability (high oxygen-loss temperature). Ba0.6Sr0.4Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ and Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ materials present good thermal-cycling stability of the electrical conductivity. Compared with Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ, Ba0.6Sr0.4Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ exhibits a better cathode performance in a Ce0.8Gd0.2O2−δ (GDC)-supported half cell. The cell performance can be improved by introducing a certain amount of GDC electrolyte into the BSCF cathode material.
Thermal and Electrical Properties of New Cathode Material Ba[sub 0.5]Sr[sub 0.5]Co[sub 0.8]Fe[sub 0.2]O[sub 3−δ] for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:A newly developed cathode material, Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta, was synthesized and characterized. X-ray diffraction results identified it as a cubic perovskite structure. Thermogravimetric results showed that lattice oxygen loss was about 2% in weight between 50 and 1000 degrees C. Thermal expansion coefficient results in air and argon were extraordinarily high, with slope changes occurring at about 382 and 360 degrees C, respectively. Electrical conductivity values were sufficient for cathode application with the maximum of about 28.1 S cm(-1) at 500 degrees C in air and 17.3 S cm(-1) at 900 degrees C in N-2, correspondingly. Both thermal and electrical properties were closely associated with lattice oxygen behaviors and oxygen partial pressure. (c) 2005 The Electrochemical Society.
