Abstract:With the progress of high-capacity radio access networks, ultra-dense small cells are rapidly being deployed in urban areas. As a result, the deployment of a large number of optical fibers in urban areas becomes a severe issue. In this Letter, we propose a hybrid fiber–terahertz (THz) mobile fronthaul system supporting flexible and high-order wireless signal transmission with the delta-sigma modulation. The photonic THz transmission is used as the seamless extension of fiber-based fronthaul in small cells. A 20-Gbit/s digital fiber–THz fronthaul system is experimentally demonstrated to validate the proposed scheme, with 10-km optical fiber transmission and 300-GHz wireless relay. Carrier aggregation of up to 10 40-MHz and 60-MHz 5G-new radio (5G-NR) channels at the radio carrier frequency of 3.9 GHz is reported. The design of quantization noise suppressed delta-sigma modulation enables the system to transmit orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation up to 16384 order quadrate amplitude modulation (QAM) mapping with the error vector magnitude (EVM) below 0.5%.

Abstract:The principle of error vector magnitude (EVM) against modulator nonlinearity for vector modulation signal (VMS) transmission in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems is theoretically and experimentally investigated.A highly linear modulation scheme is proposed and demonstrated using a single-drive dual parallel Mach Zehnder modulator (MZM).This method improves EVM performance and enlarges the linear input dynamic range of the VMS transmission.An index of maximum allowable input power difference (MAIPD) that reflects the difference of upper input power limits between these two schemes is measured.An EVM limitation of 5％ MAIPD has 5 dB.Both 16- and 64-QAM results indicate that the proposed scheme supports VMS transmission better than the MZM one.

Abstract:Four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) has been considered as a low-cost modulation format for capacity upgrade in digital mobile fronthaul; however, the bit error ratio increases due to the reduced Euclidean distance. In this letter, a novel scheme is proposed to suppress bit-error-induced error vector magnitude (EVM) distortion upon radio signal in PAM4-based fronthaul. The scheme is realized by pairing one highorder bit and one low-order bit onto one PAM4 symbol and setting a portion of low-order bits to "0." As a result, sample bits with high priority are delivered by PAM2 symbols with small error probability, and sample bits with low priority are transmitted by PAM4 signal with high spectral efficiency. Without any modification of the hardware, the proportion between PAM2 and PAM4 can be flexibly adjusted according to the quality of optical link. Experiments validate that, under respective optimal PAM2/4 proportion, EVM of long term evolution-advanced like radio signal decreases by at least 20 dB, and up to 1024-quadratic-amplitude modulation can be supported.

Abstract:These paper details a fronthaul optical link using delay-division-multiplexing (DDM) scheme with Volterra based nonlinear compensator for beyond fifth generation (B5G) and 6G massive multiple-input multiple-output (Ma-MIMO) beamforming. Based on pre-allocated relative time delays, pre-processed signals can be deaggregated to different RF chain signals following spectral aliasing caused by the digital signal processing (DSP) at remote radio units. The Volterra based nonlinear compensator is used to compensate nonlinear distortion and IQ imbalance of the fronthaul link. By combined the DDM scheme and Volterra technique, we can easily deaggregate signals and mitigate the interference caused by nonlinear distortion and IQ imbalance at the same time. In experiments, the DDM scheme support 128 RF chain signals is demonstrated. With the Volterra compensator, the signal input power of Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) has 18 dB margin. IQ imbalance caused by phase misalignment can also be compensated by the IQ Volterra. It can keep the acceptable error vector magnitude (EVM) performance within a ±10° range. After 25-km optical link, the EVM of each RF Chain is underneath 8%. And the total received 128 RF chain signals will require CPRI data rate as high as 840 Gb/s.

Abstract:A differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) based digital mobile fronthaul architecture is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By using a linear predictor in the DPCM encoding process, the quantization noise can be effectively suppressed and a prediction gain of 7~8 dB can be obtained. Experimental validation is carried out with a 20 km 15-Gbaud/λ 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) intensity modulation and direct detection system. The results verify the feasibility of supporting 163, 122, 98, 81 20-MHz 4, 16, 64, 256 QAM based antenna-carrier (AxC) containers with only 3, 4, 5, 6 quantization bits at a sampling rate of 30.72MSa/s in LTE-A environment. Further increasing the number of quantization bits to 8 and 9, 1024 quadrature amplitude modulation (1024 QAM) and 4096 QAM transmission can be realized with error vector magnitude (EVM) lower than 1% and 0.5%, respectively. The supported number of AxCs in the proposed DPCM-based fronthaul is increased and the EVM is greatly reduced compared to the common public radio interface (CPRI) based fronthaul that uses pulse code modulation. Besides, the DPCM-based fronthaul is also experimentally demonstrated to support universal filtered multicarrier signal that is one candidate waveform for the 5th generation mobile systems.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.
Performance comparison of DML, EML and MZM in dispersion-unmanaged short reach transmissions with digital signal processing

Abstract:In this paper, transmission performances of directly modulated laser (DML), electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) and Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) are experimentally compared in dispersion-unmanaged high-speed transmission systems with digital signal processing (DSP). We show that, although the DML based transmitter is often believed to be less favorable in C-band high-speed transmissions, it exhibits superior performance over the other two transmitters when either linear or nonlinear digital signal processing is adopted. By theoretical and experimental analysis, we reveal that the superiority of DML can be attributed to the compensation of fiber power fading by its inherent adiabatic chirp as well as the mitigation of chirp induced distortions by the linear or nonlinear equalization. Experimental results of 56Gb/s 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals under various equalization schemes including linear feedforward equalization, simplified nonlinear Volterra equalization and partial response signaling are presented. Particularly, we show that for DML a 40km transmission distance can be achieved to satisfy the extended range-4 (ER4) Ethernet interconnect using a simplified Volterra equalizer, and a 20km transmission distance can be supported using a linear equalizer. In contrast, for MZM and EML, the achievable transmission distances are respectively 20km and 15km using the Volterra equalizer, respectively, and 15km and 10km using linear equalizer, respectively. Moreover, we show that even using the combination of the Volterra equalizer and partial response signaling, the transmission distances of MZM and EML based systems are limited to 30km and 20km.

Abstract:In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate digital mobile fronthaul (MFH) for 65536 quadrature amplitude modulation (65536-QAM) signals based on a diff-delta-sigma modulation (D-DSM) scheme with orthogonal circulant matrix transform (OCT) precoding. By combining the DDSM scheme with OCT precoding, we successfully solved the problem of uneven distribution of in-band quantization noise (IBN) while bringing about a quantization SNR gain of about 1.5 dB. In addition, we compare two signal combination schemes, Gray coding and power superposition, in the D-DSM scheme. The results show that the power superposition scheme can achieve similar performance to Gray coding with lower computational complexity. At the same time, the power superposition scheme is less affected by the saturation effect. Therefore, the D-DSM solution combined with OCT precoding and power superposition provides an effective solution for future 6 G digital mobile fronthaul. (c) 2024 Optica Publishing Group. Abstract:In this letter, we propose a novel and straightforward scheme for Q-band (33–50 GHz) millimeter-wave signal generation enabled by a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM)-based joint algorithm, which combines probabilistic shaping (PS) and precoding technology, to enhance the anti-interference ability of the transmission system. Based on the proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrate the generation and transmission of 1.4-Gbaud 46-GHz PS-16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PS-16QAM) vector signals, showcasing improved bit-error-ratio (BER) in both standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and wireless transmission cases. The proposed scheme exhibits a clear advantage in terms of nonlinear interference suppression and satisfies the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold with a BER of 3.8 × 10 −3 in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems.

Abstract:Directly modulated lasers (DMLs) and electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs) are key transmitter options in future short-haul networks. However, both of them suffer from frequency chirp, which incurs nonlinear distortions, especially to high order modulation signals. In this paper, we investigate their application in PAM4-based digital mobile fronthaul and propose a scheme to remarkably improve the fidelity of radio signal. We first give a detailed study of the BER distribution of DML/EML based PAM4 signals and find that the BER of the second bit is much higher than that of the first bit in both systems. Accordingly, we propose to adopt sample bit interleaving to reduce the radio signal distortions caused by sample bit errors. Experimental results of 56Gbps I/Q data transmission reveal that, in a DML-based transmission system, the proposed scheme respectively leads to up to 8dB and 13dB EVM reduction to accommodate 33 × 100MHz 1024QAM OFDM signals and 64QAM OFDM signals in 10km and 20km cases. As well as in an EML-based transmission system, 14dB EVM reduction is achieved in 10km to finally accommodate 33 × 100MHz 256QAM OFDM signal.

Abstract:Driven by continuously growing mobile traffic, line rate of digital mobile fronthaul (MFH) network keeps surging. 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) is a promising format to provide such high data capacity, due to its bandwidth and cost efficiency. In this paper, we propose an improved method to reduce mobile signal distortion caused by bit error of optical transmission. The concept comes from the characteristic that high order sample bit error induces far severer performance degradation to radio signal than low order one. In the solution, high order sample bits and low order sample bits are interleaved, so that they are respectively mapped to first bit (1stb) and second bit (2ndb) of PAM4 symbol. On the other hand, amplitude levels of PAM4 are set unequal to broaden the "middle eye", levering accuracy of 1stb. Hence, the total fidelity of mobile signal is enhanced. The feasibility is confirmed both theoretically and experimentally. The investigation is based on two typical digital systems, i.e., 16-bit uniform quantizing and 8-bit nonuniform quantizing. Experimental results indicate that, EVM of LTE-A like radio signal decreases by up to 13dB in uniform quantizing system, and by up to 5dB in nonuniform quantizing system, compared with conventional equally-spaced PAM4.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated 16384-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16384QAM) mobile fronthaul based on 3-amplitude quantization high-pass Delta-sigma Modulation (DSM) in the O band intensity-modulated direct detection (IM/DD) system. By using 3-amplitude quantized high-pass DSM, we successfully quantize the analog waveform of intermediate frequency (IF) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal into 3-Level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM3) signal, and 1 GHz bandwidth 16384-QAM and 1024QAM are successful transmission in 20Gb/s IM/DD link. 0.63% Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) of 16384QAM and 0.7% EVM of 2048QAM are achieved after 25km SSMF and 50km SSMF transmission, respectively. The signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) of the retrieved OFDM signal is 43 dB, which shows that the proposed scheme can support 16384QAM mobile fronthaul network.
