Anti-chromatic Dispersion Transmission of Dual-chirp Waveform Based on a Single DPMZM

Abstract:Photonic approaches for generating and transmitting dual-chirp waveforms has been extensively studied recently. In this paper, a simplified scheme to generate and transmit dual-chirp waveforms with elimination of the dispersion-induced power fading is proposed. An integrated dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) which consists of two sub-MZMs and a phase shifter (PS) is utilized. We apply an unmodulated microwave signal as well as a baseband chirped waveform to two RF ports of DPMZM respectively, in which carrier-suppressed modulations are implemented. Then we control the PS to suppress the power fading introduced by fiber transmission. Thanks to the use of DPMZM and convenient adjustment of a direct current (DC) voltage applied to PS, the proposed scheme owns a simple structure under the condition that it can produce dual-chirp waveforms with anti-chromatic dispersion transmission. Both theoretical derivation and experimental verification are performed. In the experiments, dual-chirp waveforms centered at 14 GHz and 20 GHz with a bandwidth of 1 GHz are successfully generated and transmitted through a roll of 20 km and 10 km single-mode fibers with elimination of power fading effects. The waveform power is increased by 8.2 dB, compared with those suffering from the power fading. Different DC voltages of 2.635 V and 6.877 V are set, respectively. Since the DC voltage that determines the phase shift is related to the fiber length and signal frequency, their relationships are demonstrated experimentally. The instantaneous bandwidth limitation of the dual-chirp waveform is discussed. The feasibility of the dual-chirp waveform transmitter for one-to-multi-transmission is also discussed.

Abstract:112 Gbps per wavelength, amplification free Four level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM-4) transmissions are experimentally demonstrated with advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. Two DSP architectures are investigated for Directly Modulated Lasers (DMLs): 1) the regular DSP with Feed Forward Equalization (FFE) and Decision Feedback Equalization (DFE), and 2) the enhanced DSP with Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) equalizer. The experimental results show that with advanced DSP technologies the conventional DML can achieve 40 km transmissions with Bit Error Rate (BER) under 2.4 x 10(-4) that meets RS (544, 514) Forward Error Correction (FEC) requirement; with regular-DSP the advanced DML can achieve 40 km transmissions with BER under 3.8 x 10(-3), with stronger FEC. 112 Gbps and beyond per lambda DML based transmission is a promising low power, low-cost solution for 800 GbE or 1.6 TbE Ethernet.

Abstract:A decision feedback equalization (DFE) algorithm is proposed by simplifying Volterra structure. The simplification principle and process of the proposed Volterra-based equalization algorithm are presented. With the support of this algorithm, the signal damage for four-level pulse amplitude modulation signal (PAM-4) is compensated, which is caused by device bandwidth limitation and dispersion during transmission in C-band intensity modulation direct detection (IM-DD) fiber system. Experiments have been carried out to demonstrate that PAM-4 signals can transmit over 2 km in standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on a 30 GHz Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). The bit error rate ( BER ) can reach the threshold of hard decision-forward error correction (HD-FEC) ( BER =3.8×10 −3 ) and its sensitivity is reduced by 2 dBm compared with traditional feedforward equalization (FFE). Meanwhile, the algorithm complexity is greatly reduced by 55%, which provides an effective theoretical support for the commercial application of the algorithm.

Abstract:Advanced modulation formats combined with digital signal processing and direct detection is a promising way to realize high capacity, low cost and power efficient short reach optical transmission system. In this paper, we present a detailed investigation on the performance of three advanced modulation formats for 100 Gb/s short reach transmission system. They are PAM-4, CAP-16 and DMT. The detailed digital signal processing required for each modulation format is presented. Comprehensive simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance of each modulation format in terms of received optical power, transmitter bandwidth, relative intensity noise and thermal noise. The performance of each modulation format is also experimentally studied. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first demonstration of a 112 Gb/s transmission over 10km of SSMF employing single band CAP-16 with EML. Finally, a comparison of computational complexity of DSP for the three formats is presented.

Abstract:In this work, we systematically analyze the impact of three kinds of Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) imbalances, including bias deviation, amplitude mismatch, and differential time skew in intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) links. It is shown that, for power fading limited transmission, the imbalances can be utilized as advantages rather than impairments. Specifically, the bias deviation with single-arm driven mode and amplitude mismatch with differential driven mode can increase the available bandwidth by shifting the frequency of fading notches. Meanwhile, time skew provides another way to avoid fading by shaping the double sideband (DSB) signal into a vestigial sideband (VSB) with an asymmetrical transfer function. In the transmission experiment, 34 Gbaud Nyquist 6/8-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-6/8) signals are used for investigation in a 20 km dispersion-uncompensated standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) link. With the help of a Volterra nonlinear equalizer, all three kinds of imbalances can achieve bit-error rates (BERs) below the 7% and 20% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) thresholds for PAM-6 and PAM-8 signals, respectively. The received power sensitivity is also compared at the back-to-back (BTB) case and after fiber transmission. Both numerical simulation and experimental demonstration confirm that the dispersion-induced power fading can be effectively suppressed with bias, amplitude, or skew imbalance, providing a feasible solution for transmission distance extension of C-band DD links.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the transmission of 100 Gbit/s and beyond vestigial sideband (VSB) n-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-n) signals, with a commercial 10 GHz-class directly modulated laser (DML) in the C-band, using optical filtering. To mitigate transmission impairments at the transmitter side, Nyquist pulse shaping and Kaiser Window filtering techniques are used to overcome the limited bandwidth of optoelectronic devices. At the receiver side, the joint nonlinear equalization based on cascaded multi-modulus algorithm (CMMA) and Volterra Filter (VF) is used to reduce the strong nonlinear impairments from chirp and chromatic dispersion (CD). 100 Gb/s PAM-4, 107.5 Gb/s PAM-4, and 101.25 Gb/s PAM-8 signals can be successfully transmitted over 45 km, 10 km and 10 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) under the bit-error-ratio (BER) of 3.8 × 10-3, respectively.

Abstract:An ultrabroadband, high linearity directly modulated laser (DML) module operated at the O-band is proposed. The effect of the package network on the DML module is first investigated. In the package network, a wire bonding compensation method is used to improve the resonance at high frequency, which can be equivalent to the channel equalization technique. Without any optical amplification, we experimentally demonstrated 90 Gb/s four-level pulse amplitude modulation transmission over 40 km standard single mode fiber, which is the longest reach to the best of our knowledge. A bit error rate of 6.74×10-4 is achieved at a received optical power of -2.5 dBm. A receiver sensitivity of -4.5 dBm at 7% overhead forward error correction limit (3.8×10-3) is obtained for back-to-back with a power margin of more than 8.5 dB.

Abstract:Metro network, as a medium distance transmission system, poses a special challenge of transmission capacity and cost. In this paper, we present a detailed comparison of applying three advanced modulation formats including pulse amplitude modulation-4 (PAM-4), carrierless amplitude and phase modulation-16 QAM (CAP-16), and discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) with low-cost direct detection for 100-Gb/s/ metro optical transmission systems. These modulation formats are all experimentally demonstrated with similar digital signal processing algorithms. Three kinds of chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation ways named CD precompensation method, single sideband (SSB), and dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) are also compared. Two types of modulators including an IQ modulator and a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator are employed to generate SSB or CD precompensated signals in this experiment and their transmission performance is also evaluated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the performance of single-wavelength 100-G signal transmission based on direct detection is evaluated over 480 km of standard single mode fiber with PAM-4, CAP-16, and DFT-S OFDM modulation formats.

Abstract:Chromatic dispersion (CD) has been considered as a significant issue that needs to he addressed over the past decades. Nowadays, as the bandwidth of radio frequency signals has expanded to multi-gigahertz, CD becomes increasingly troublesome for some wideband signals such as linear frequency modulated waveform (LFMW), which requires a flat amplitude response and a linear phase response. In this paper, we first investigate the CD-induced amplitude distortion and phase distortion that a wideband signal will suffer in traditional double-sideband (DSB) modulated and single-sideband (SSB) modulated radio-over-fiber (RoF) links with an emphasis on the LFMW. The detrimental impacts of the CD-induced distortions are subsequently discussed based on the pulse compression performance. Then, a two-tap microwave photonics equalizer (MPE) model is proposed and its operating principle for overcoming the CD-induced distortions is demonstrated. Based on the model, we design the MPE, which is mainly composed of an integrated dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator and a differential group delay module. In the proofof-concept experiment, the RoF link utilizing the proposed MPE is built, and a 1-10 GHz LFMW is transmitted over the 66.3-km single-mode fiber. Thanks to the MPE, both CD-induced amplitude distortion and phase distortion are successfully compensated. Pulse compression results show that the pulse, compared with the signal transmitted in the SSB-haled link.
Advanced digital signal processing for short-haul and access network

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.

Abstract:Directly modulated lasers (DMLs) and electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs) are key transmitter options in future short-haul networks. However, both of them suffer from frequency chirp, which incurs nonlinear distortions, especially to high order modulation signals. In this paper, we investigate their application in PAM4-based digital mobile fronthaul and propose a scheme to remarkably improve the fidelity of radio signal. We first give a detailed study of the BER distribution of DML/EML based PAM4 signals and find that the BER of the second bit is much higher than that of the first bit in both systems. Accordingly, we propose to adopt sample bit interleaving to reduce the radio signal distortions caused by sample bit errors. Experimental results of 56Gbps I/Q data transmission reveal that, in a DML-based transmission system, the proposed scheme respectively leads to up to 8dB and 13dB EVM reduction to accommodate 33 × 100MHz 1024QAM OFDM signals and 64QAM OFDM signals in 10km and 20km cases. As well as in an EML-based transmission system, 14dB EVM reduction is achieved in 10km to finally accommodate 33 × 100MHz 256QAM OFDM signal.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) for high spectrum efficiency transmission system are investigated in both long-haul and short haul optical networks. For long-haul transmission, two different super-Nyquist WDM systems based on advanced post (receiver side) and pre (transmitter side) DSP are demonstrated and studied. A novel DSP scheme for this optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) without post filter are proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which directly recovers the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. This improved filtering tolerance and transmission performance are demonstrated in an 8-channel 112-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) experiment with a 25GHz-grid over 2640-km single-mode fiber (SMF). Alternatively, a novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce the channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering and using. Only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM multiplexing. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit 10 channel 32-GBaud (128-Gb/s) PDM-9-QAM signals within 25-GHz grid over 2975-km at a net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz (after excluding the 20% soft-decision FEC overhead). We extend the DSP for short haul optical transmission networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high speed CAP-64QAM system using direct modulation laser (DML) based on direct detection and digital equalizations. Decision-directed least mean squares (DD-LMS) are used to equalize the CAP-64QAM. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit up to a record 60-Gb/s CAP-64QAM over 20-km stand single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on the DML and direct detection.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated a four-channel wavelength-division-multiplex (WDM) 560 Gbit/s 128 quadrature amplitude modulation (128QAM)-Discrete MultiTone (DMT) signal transmission in a short reach interconnect. Coordinated discrete Fourier transform-spread and preequalization are jointly used to simultaneously overcome serious frequency domain power attenuation and reduce the peak-to-average power ratio of the DMT signal. An additional postdecision-directed least mean square equalizer is used afterward to further compensate the channel response and mitigate the devices’ implementation penalty. These proposed algorithms and equalizer are validated through experiment in this paper, we achieved the highest capacity signal transmission in the four-channel WDM transmission system using intensitymodulation and directdetection over a 2.4-km single mode fiber with a bit-error-ratio under the hard-decision forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10 -3 .

Abstract:To meet the increasing bandwidth demand for rapidly growing data flow from the wide spreading multimedia services, broadband Internet, and cloud services, 100G and even beyond data transmission based on compact and low-cost transceivers have been intensively studied in short-reach links, access, inter data-center-interconnections, metro and regional networks. For these systems, direct-detection is more attractive due to the lower system cost and power consumption. In this paper, we review four advanced modulation formats including pulse amplitude modulation-4 (PAM-4), carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation-16 QAM (CAP-16), discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) and Duobinary with low-cost direct detection in 100 Gb/s/lambda short-reach and metro optical transmission systems. Abstract:The precoding technique has been widely studied in multi-carrier modulation systems such as discrete multi-tone (DMT), due to its ability to equalize subcarrier signal-to-noise (SNR) and reduce signal peak-to-average power ratio. In this work, we implement a low-complexity real-time 30-GSa/s DMT transceiver on a single field programmable gate array chip, enabled by simplified fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms and timing synchronization, block precoding (BP) and partial pre-emphasis (PPE) techniques. Four software-selectable BP techniques, i.e., the traditional concatenated BP (CBP) and the interleaved BP (IBP) based on FFT or fast Walsh–Hadamard transform (FWHT), and complete pre-emphasis (CPE) or PPE schemes are implemented in the transceiver. FWHT-CBP/IBP saves 60% on-chip registers and 67% look-up tables and 100% multipliers compared to FFT-CBP/IBP. Besides, more than 35% multipliers for the transceiver are reduced with the simplified FFTs in comparison with Spiral FFTs. The real-time transceiver is investigated in a short-reach intensity modulation and direct detection transmission system. The results exhibit that IBP can afford better SNR equalization and outperform CBP ones, and FWHT-IBP has a similar bit error rate (BER) performance to FFT-IBP. With the help of FWHT-IBP and PPE, the real-time 40-Gbit/s 16-QAM-DMT signals are successfully transmitted over 20-km standard single-mode fiber link with the BER below 3.8e-3 during 5-hour continuous measurements.

Abstract:A parallel transmission approach is more likely to realize 400 Gb/s and above short reach transmission as it helps to reduce the cost of both electrical and optical device largely. Directly modulated lasers (DML) are more attractive in 400 Gb/s approach, because it requires relatively small amount of driving power and has low insertion loss, thus lowering its cost. However, the intrinsic chirp will degrade the transmission performance. In this paper, an optical filtering technique is introduced for 400 Gb/s high-speed DML-based carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation short reach systems for the first time. Owing to the additional optical filter, 1 dB and 3.6 dB sensitivity improvement at BER of 3.8x10(-3) is obtained for the back-to-back and 15 km fiber link transmission for single lane at the bitrate of 28 Gb/s. Then a 16-lane CAP16 system with a total bit rate of 413 Gb/s is demonstrated experimentally using low-cost 10 GHz-class DML using optical filtering technique. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America.
