Abstract:Potential benefits of the use of lightweight composites in trains could be further enhanced by using recycled raw materials, such as recycled carbon fibre (rCF) for carbon-fibre-reinforced polymers (CFRPs). Within this context, this work fills the gap in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies on lightweight, waste-based train components by exploring the environmental suitability of two alternative pieces for trains based on the use of CFRP from rCF. Using mainly primary data, the environmental life-cycle profile and hotspots of both a lightweight running gear and a lightweight carbody were estimated for a relevant set of indicators such as the carbon footprint, finding that improvement actions on carbon fibre recycling (specifically on hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid as solvolysis reagents) and the electricity demand for CFRP production could considerably enhance the environmental performance of the manufactured lightweight pieces. When enlarging the scope of the study for a preliminary comparison between conventional and alternative (i.e. lightweight) pieces from a combined manufacturing and use perspective, environmental benefits associated with the full-life operation of the train with these lightweight pieces were found to highly exceed manufacturing penalties. Both lightweight train components were concluded to potentially outperform their conventional counterparts under the whole set of assessed indicators.
