Abstract:The development of polymerization methodology is essential for the pursuit of the structural and functional diversity of polymers. To construct polymers with new functional groups, the existing reactions may not meet the requirements of high efficiency and selectivity, and reaction customizations on the substrates and conditions are hence necessary to fulfill the demands of polymer synthesis. Herein, to realize direct conversion from elemental selenium (Se) to functional polymers with unique Se-containing heterocycles, the efficient transition-metal-free room temperature regioselective polymerizations of Se and alkynones with desired reactivity and selectivity were developed. Poly(1,4-diselenin)s or polyselenophenes with high molecular weights (M n up to 29,400 g/mol) were afforded in high yields (up to 92%), which showed excellent solubility, stability, and high refractive indices (up to 1.8487 at 633 nm). The development of Se-based polymerizations through reaction customization is anticipated to accelerate the exploration of Se chemistry and Se-containing polymer materials.

Abstract:Due to their unique properties, selenium-containing polymers have become one of the research focuses of polymer materials in recent years. First, selenium can transform among various states of selenoxide, selenone, and selenium free radicals, and then be restored under these conditions, which endows these polymers with multiresponsive behaviors, including responses to redox changes, light, radiation,etc. Second, these polymers show characteristic properties. Selenium-containing polymers exhibit unique multiple optical-electrical characteristics, including high photoconductivity, anisotropic thermoconductivity, high piezoelectric and thermoelectric responses, and a high refractive index. Based on these various properties, selenium-containing polymers are regarded as excellent functional polymer materials. Therefore, it is meaningful to synthesize selenium-containing polymers with various structures. This paper principally gives a summary of the organic reactions of organoselenium compounds and reviews the research on the synthesis of selenium-containing polymersviadifferent methods, such as the use of selenium-containing monomers and their polymerization, selenium-containing initiators for polymerization, selenium-containing mediators for controlled polymerization and selenium-containing molecules for the postmodification of polymers. Moreover, applications of selenium-containing polymers are described, including their use as intrinsic high refractive index polymeric materials, oxidative- and reductive-responsive materials, dynamic exchanging polymers, selective metal adsorbents, and catalysts.

Abstract:The atom-economical alkyne polyhydrothiolations of aromatic diynes (1) and dithiol (2) catalyzed by rhodium complexes proceed smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature in a regioselective manner, producing sole anti-Markovnikov products of poly(vinylene sulfide)s (3) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 31500) and stereoregularities (E content up to 100%) in high yields (up to 95.2%). The stereostructures of the polymers are readily tuned by engineering control on the sequential addition of monomers during the polymerization process and postmanipulation by light irradiation. All the poly(vinylene sulfide)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good film-forming ability and high optical transparency. The functional pendants in 1 have endowed 3 with novel properties such as aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, optical limiting to harsh laser pulses, and ceramization capability to semiconducting nanoparticles. The polymers are thermal and UV curable, enabling the fabrication of fluorescent photopatterns. Their thin films show high refractive indices (n(D) = 1.75-1.70) and low optical dispersions (down to 0.006) at telecom important wavelengths. Their refractive indices vary with their stereostructures and can be modulated by UV irradiation.

Abstract:This communication describes the fabrication of diselenide-containing supramolecular polymers. The diselenide-containing supramolecular polymers were fabricated by equimolarly mixing (FGGC11Se) 2 and CB[ 8] in aqueous solution driven by host-guest interactions between cucurbit[8] uril (CB[8]) and Phe-Gly-Gly. The amphiphilic diselenide-containing supramolecular polymers could further form aggregates for loading hydrophobic small molecules such as Nile Red and releasing them upon addition of oxidants or reductants. This line of research not only expands the library of selenium-containing polymers, but also offers a new strategy to develop functional supramolecular polymers for drug delivery.
Elemental Selenium-Derived Poly(sulfide Selenide)s: A Platform of Photodegradable and Electrochemical Responsive Polymers

Abstract:Selenium-containing polymers have numerous attractive properties, such as light response behaviors, biocompatibilities, and heavy-metal-ion adhesive ability. However, the lack of efficient strategies for constructing selenium-containing polymers limits their development. Herein, a facile but efficient strategy is proposed for synthesizing poly(sulfide selenide)s directly from elemental selenium and episulfides in the presence of an organocatalyst system. This strategy affords diverse poly(sulfide selenide)s with high sulfide-selenide linkage selectivity (>99%). The mechanism exploration reveals that the sulfide-selenide linkage selectivity is affected by the nucleophilicity of the organic bases: the organic base with high nucleophilicity leads to the high sulfide-selenide linkage selectivity. Notably, the poly(sulfide selenide)s exhibit excellent photodegradable nature. Furthermore, the excellent electrochemical properties of these poly(sulfide selenide)s enable their application in electrochemical CO2 capture. The high monomer compatibility of this method leads to a series of poly(sulfide selenide)s with diverse structures and thus various thermal and optical performances.

Abstract:A series of Se–Se-linked polystyrenes have been synthesized and subjected to pulse sonication. Comprehensive investigations based on GPC measurements, derivatization experiments, and EPR spectroscopy verify the sonication-induced bond scission and metathesis of these polymeric diselenides. The metathesis kinetics and energy conversion efficiency by different stimuli including heating, light, and sonication are compared, which demonstrate that sonication can offer an alternative way to break the Se–Se bond and realize selective metathesis reactions between diselenide-linked polymers and small molecules. Abstract:Selenium-containing polymers are a group of fascinating functional polymers with unique structures, properties, and applications, which have been developed recently but only with limited examples. The challenges of developing selenium-containing polymers with structural and functional diversity include the lack of economic and safe monomers, lack of efficient and convenient synthetic approaches, and poor stability of selenium-involving covalent bonds. In this work, room-temperature metal-free multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) of elemental selenium, diisocyanides, and dipropargyl alcohols were developed, and polymers with a selenium-containing aliphatic heterocycle, 1,3-oxaselenolane, were synthesized through these MCPs directly from elemental selenium. The alicyclic poly(oxaselenolane)s enjoyed high yields (up to 93%), high molecular weights (up to 15 600 g/mol), high thermal and chemical stability, good solubility and processability. With the structural design of the poly(oxaselenolane)s and their high selenium contents of up to 33.7 wt %, the refractive indices of their spin-coated thin films could reach 1.8026 at 633 nm and maintain 1.7770 at 1700 nm. It is anticipated that these efficient, convenient, mild, and economic multicomponent polymerizations of elemental selenium can promote the selenium-related polymer chemistry and accelerate the exploration of diversified selenium-containing functional polymer materials.

Abstract:It has been a challenge to synthesize thiol-functionalized polyacetylenes because of the poisoning effect of mercapto group on the early transition-metal catalysts. Rhodium complexes such as [Rh(cod)Cl](2) can catalyze the polymerizations but the products are insoluble and intractable. In this work, we tackled this challenge. Sulfur-containing polyacetylenes with macroscopic processability were successfully synthesized by separating thiol pendant from polyene backbone with a flexible spacer (in PI), capping free mercapto group with acetyl or alkyl group (in P2 or P3), and using a zwitterionic complex Rh+[eta(6)-C6H5(nbd)B-(C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. The soluble polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and TGA analyses. Due to the specific interactions between thiol group and zinc cation, ZnO nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the surfaces of polymer films, as verified by AFM analysis. Polymer P2 and ZnO nanoparticles could be readily hybridized by simply mixing the two components in an organic solvent such as chloroform, THF, or DMF. SEM images revealed that the morphology of the film cast from the solution of the P2/ZnO hybrid was dominated by well-dispersed nanoparticles and smooth surface.

Abstract:Selenium is an essential microelement for human beings. Because of the low bond energy of C-Se and Se-Se, selenium-containing polymers have become special materials with unique properties and functions. We have designed and synthesized a series of selenium-containing polymers, including main chain and side chain block copolymers, dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers for controlled self-assembly and disassembly under various responsive stimuli, which may act as new biomaterials for controlled drug delivery and efficient enzyme mimics. It is anticipated greatly this line of work will open an avenue for the combination of corporative therapy for cancer treatment.

Abstract:Selenium has several unique biological effects in many aspects, making use of bioactive components and inorganic selenium to prepare antitumor organic selenium compounds will have a great significant impact on cancer therapy and patient wellbeing. It was well-known that Se- Se bond is very reactive and sensitive to the dual redox environment, therefore, we can take advantage of such feature to prepare diselenide-containing polymers which can be applied in the area of drug controlled release. In this paper, we prepared amphiphilic diselenide copolymers with diselenide-containing diols (HO-SeSe-OH), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and water soluble low-molecular chitosan (LW-CS). The synthetic copolymers were characterized by means of gel permeation chromatography (GPC), H-1 NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The molecular weight of CS-PUSeSe-CS copolymer was 4.42 X 10(4) g/mol which calculated according to the integral ratio of the peaks at delta 4.00 and 4.42 which related to CH2O groups of chitosan and NHCOOCH2 groups of IPDI, respectively. The size distribution of aggregates measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, which gave a result of about 130 nm in average diameter. The critical aggregate concentration (CAC) of aggregates was measured by the fluorescent probe method and the result was 0.01 mg/mL. The dual redox responsive of aggregates was studied both in VC and H2O2 solution, the results showed that amphiphilic diselenide copolymer would cause Se-Se chain scission in no matter weak oxidative or reductive ambient environment. Although negative charged drug-rhodamine B (RB) could not release out from aggregates due to electrostatic attraction. However, positive charged drug-doxorubicin hydrochloride (Doxo) can easily release from aggregates in reductive VC solution by analyzing UV-spectra at the wavelength of 500 nm, indicating aggregates assembled from diselenide-containing copolymers may act as powerful and efficient bionano reactors and realize controllable drug delivery by breaking Se-Se bonds.

Abstract:A convenient and effective method of palladium‐catalyzed C–H selenylation of the 2‐aryl acetamides assisted with removable 8‐aminoquinoline with readily available diselenides and selenyl chlorides has been developed. This selenylation reaction is scalable and tolerates a wide range of functional groups, providing a straightforward way of the preparing unsymmetrical diaryl selenides and dibenzoselenepinone. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that a single‐electron transfer type mechanism and facile C–H metalation are operative.

Abstract:Although researchers have made great progress in the development of responsive polymeric materials for controlled drug release or diagnostics over the last 10 years, therapeutic results still lag behind expectations. The development of special materials that respond to physiological relevant concentrations, typically within the micromolar or nanomolar concentration regime, remains challenging. Therefore, researchers continue to pursue new biomaterials with unique properties and that respond to mild biochemical signals or biomarkers. Selenium is an essential element in human body with potential antioxidant properties. Because of selenium's electronegativity and atomic radius, selenium-containing compounds exhibit unique bond energy (C-Se bond 244 kJ mol⁻¹; Se-Se bond 172 kJ mol⁻¹). These values give the C-Se or Se-Se covalent bonds dynamic character and make them responsive to mild stimuli. Therefore, selenium-containing polymers can disassemble in response to changes under physiological relevant conditions. This property makes them a promising biomaterial for controlled release of drugs or synthetic enzyme mimics. Until recently, few researchers have looked at selenium-containing polymers as novel biomaterials. In this Account, we summarize our recent research on selenium-containing polymers and show their potential application as mild-responsive drug delivery vehicles and artificial enzymes. We begin by reviewing the current state of the art in the synthesis of selenium-containing main chain block copolymers. We highlight the dual redox and gamma-irradiation behaviors of diselenide-containing block copolymers assemblies, discussing the possibility of their use in a combination of chemotherapy and actinotherapy. We also describe the coordination of platinum with monoselenide containing block copolymers. Such structures offer the possibility of fabricating multidrug systems for cooperative chemotherapy. In addition, we summarize the methods for the covalent and noncovalent preparation of selenium-containing polymers with side chains, which highlight the opportunity to reversibly tune the amphiphilicity of selenium-containing polymers. Finally, we present strategies for the design of highly efficient selenium-containing dendritic polymers that can mimic enzymes. This field is still in its infancy period, and further research can only be limited by our imagination.

Abstract:The diselenide-containing polycarbonate ((PTMCSe)(2)) and diselenide-containing poly(epsilon-caprolactone) ((PCLSe)(2)) were synthesized by the ring opening polymerization using a new compound of di-(1-hydroxypropyl) diselenide ((HOC3H6Se)(2)) as initiator. The dynamic properties of these diselenide-containing polymers were revealed by a series of diselenide exchange reactions, which could be realized under visible irradiation at room temperature. As the result of the diselenide exchange between (PTMCSe)(2) and (PCLSe)(2), a di-block polymer (PCLSeSePTMC) was formed in (PTMCSe)(2) /(PCLSe)(2) alloy. Taking advantage of the diselenide exchange, the compatibility and miscibility of (PTMCSe)(2)/(PCLSe)(2) alloy was significantly improved by the exchange product (PCLSeSePTMC) which acted as polymeric compatilizer. This novel concept may be applied in other polymer alloys containing dynamic covalent polymers.

Abstract:Reaction of 1,4-bis(chloromethyl)benzene with the in situ-generated NaHSe afforded a facile fabrication method of poly-selenide, a novel organoselenium material which was found to be efficient for heavy metal removing and recycling. The material could grab transition metals from their aqueous solutions and release them in HNO3. After treating with aqueous Na2SO3, the polymer could be refreshed and reused. It could absorb heavier Pb even than its own weight from high concentration solutions, and remove almost all of the Pb in dilute solutions.

Abstract:Selenium is a semimetallic element lying in group XVI of the periodic table with its chemical properties resembling sulfur. But owing to its relatively low electronegativity and large atomic radius compared with sulfur, selenium also shows unique properties. This feature endows selenium-containing compounds with high reactivity and sensitivity. Although organic selenium chemistry has been developing very fast, the successful introduction of selenium into polymer science is rather scarce. Fortunately, we have seen a drastic rising trend in the area of selenium-containing polymers over the past decade. In this Perspective, the synthetic routes of selenium-containing polymers are summarized, and their unique stimuli-responsive properties are elaborated on, together with their diverse applications in the field of adaptive and biomedical materials.

Abstract:The placement of selenium (Se) atoms into polymers to achieve functional materials for diverse applications in adaptive and biomedical materials has attracted broad interest. However, the difficulty in creating well-defined Se-rich polymers is a critical limitation. In this work, we report the successful alternating and regioselective copolymerization of nonstrained gamma-selenobutyrolactone with epoxides. Poly(selenide-alt-ester)s containing selenide and ester groups in each repeating unit are achieved under mild reaction conditions. The process mediated by the phosphazene base (P2)/alcohol at 25 degrees C exhibits high activity and living behavior, as evidenced by narrow molecular weight distributions (1.05-1.29) and switch on-off chain extension experiments. The nucleophilic attack of epoxides by selenol anions is the rate-determining step according to kinetic studies. The resultant Se-containing polyesters possess >99% alternating degree, >99% regioregularity, and programmable hydroxyl terminals. More importantly, these poly(selenide-alt-ester)s exhibit the initial thermal decomposition temperatures of up to 275 degrees C, low glass-transition temperatures of down to -59 degrees C, excellent solvability in common organic solvents, high refractive indexes (1.61-1.62), and good ionic conductivity (when doped with Li salt, 1.09 x 10(-6) S/cm at 30 degrees C, 1.73 x 10(-4) S/cm at 100 degrees C), indicating potential broad application prospects of these Se-rich polyesters.

Abstract:The stepwise synthesis of 1,5,9,13-tetraselenacyclohexadecan-3-ol 7 from the reaction of sodium propane-1,3-bisselenolate-2-ol with 4,8-diselenaundecan-1,11-di-p-toluenesulfonate 5 in THF and ethanol in 62% yield is described. Compound 5 is obtained from the corresponding diol 3, which is obtained, in turn, from the reaction of sodium propane-1,3-bisselenolate with two equivalents of 3-chloropropanol. 1,5-Diselenacyclooctan-3-ol 9 and 1,5,9,13-tetraselenacyclohexadecan-3,11-diol 10 are obtained in yields of 43% and 11%, respectively, from the one-step reaction of sodium propane-1,3-bisselenolate-2-ol with 1,3-dibromopropane. Polymers with pendant selenium coronands, 1,5-diselenacyclooctane (8Se2) and 1,5,9,13-tetraselenacyclohexadecane (16Se4), have been prepared by free radical polymerization of the corresponding selenium coronands 9 and 7, derivatized as their acryloyl esters 11 and 12. Copolymers of methyl acrylate and 3,7-diselenacyclooctyl acrylate 11 have also been prepared in analogous fashion. The polymers have been characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, IR, and UV–visible spectroscopy. The redox chemistry of polymer-bound selenium coronands in solution, and in the form of thin films coated on electrodes, has been determined by electrochemical methods. Selenium coronands attached to the polymer chain exhibit enhanced oxidative stability compared to monomeric analogues, presumably because restrictive motion of polymer-bound moieties inhibits inter- and intra-molecular degradation reactions. Electroactivity of polymer-modified electrodes is restricted to a few monolayers close to the electrode surface. Spatial separation of coronands along the chain, achieved by copolymerization with electro-inert methyl acrylate, gave copolymer-modified electrodes that possessed even greater redox stability than their corresponding homopolymers. Furthermore, by blending electro-inert poly(methyl acrylate) with electroactive selenium coronand copolymers, polymer-modified electrodes that possessed superior electrochemical stability were obtained.
