Abstract:Aluminium matrix composites have been fabricated by squeeze casting into short fibre preforms modified on the basis of a phase contiguity model to improve mechanical performance. Fibre junctions were created in a planar random alumina fibre array by (a) sintering, (b) phosphoric acid treatment, (c) phosphoric acid/aluminium hydroxide (P/Al) treatment and (d) infiltration with alumina powder and sintering. The microstructures and mechanical properties of these composites were examined systematically. The results indicate that using phosphoric acid solution itself to create inter-fibre bonds in the preform gave rise to very low composite strength and ductility compared with that resulting from the as-received preform. This is mainly due to the severe damage to the fibres caused by chemical reaction. By employing the P/Al binder to create the cross-links, the composites reinforced with laboratory-made preforms yielded higher tensile strength relative to the uniform fibre reinforced composites without any sacrifice to the ductility and elastic modulus.

Abstract:Composites have been found to be the most promising and discerning material available in this century. Presently, composites reinforced with fibers of synthetic or natural materials are gaining more importance as demands for lightweight materials with high strength for specific applications are growing in the market. Fiber-reinforced polymer composite offers not only high strength to weight ratio, but also reveals exceptional properties such as high durability; stiffness; damping property; flexural strength; and resistance to corrosion, wear, impact, and fire. These wide ranges of diverse features have led composite materials to find applications in mechanical, construction, aerospace, automobile, biomedical, marine, and many other manufacturing industries. Performance of composite materials predominantly depends on their constituent elements and manufacturing techniques, therefore, functional properties of various fibers available worldwide, their classifications, and the manufacturing techniques used to fabricate the composite materials need to be studied in order to figure out the optimized characteristic of the material for the desired application. An overview of a diverse range of fibers, their properties, functionality, classification, and various fiber composite manufacturing techniques is presented to discover the optimized fiber-reinforced composite material for significant applications. Their exceptional performance in the numerous fields of applications have made fiber-reinforced composite materials a promising alternative over solitary metals or alloys.

Abstract:Fiber reinforced polymer composites have been around for many decades but recently their use has started to increase in multiple industries such as automotive, aerospace, and construction. The conventional composite manufacturing processes such as wet lay-up, resin transfer molding, automatic lay ups etc. suffer from a lot of practical and material issues which have limited their use. The mechanical properties of the parts produced by such processes also suffer from variation that causes problems downstream. Composites based additive manufacturing processes such as Fused Deposition Modeling and Composite Filament Fabrication are trying to remove some of the barriers to the use of composites. Additive manufacturing processes offer more design and material freedom than conventional composite manufacturing processes. This paper compares conventional composite processes for the manufacturing of Epoxy-Fiberglass fiber reinforced polymers with composite filament fabrication based Nylon-Fiberglass fiber reinforced polymers. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elastic modulus, and fatigue life are compared for the different processes. The effect of process parameters on these mechanical properties for the composite filament fabrication based process is also examined in this work. It is found that the composite filament fabrication based process is very versatile and the parts manufactured by this process can be used in various applications.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) has brought about a revolution in the way we can manufacture complex products with customized features. AM has paved its way in the application areas ranging from aerospace, automotive, consumer to biomedical. AM of composites has attracted special attention due to its promise in improving, modifying, and diversifying the properties of generic materials through introducing reinforcements. This review provides a detailed landscape of fiber‐reinforced composites processed via AM techniques. Different AM processes, various material formulations, and strengths and drawbacks of AM methods are discussed. Emphasis is paid to AM techniques focusing on continuous fibers, as they hold the promise of becoming the next‐generation composite fabrication methodology. The article also tries to identify the potential of AM technology for fiber‐reinforced composites and delves into challenges facing the area. Recent progress in the development of additive manufactured fiber reinforced polymer composite, fabricated using various AM techniques, is reviewed. Several important aspects of composite materials are focussed upon, which include 1) types of reinforcements and matrices; 2) good fiber‐to‐matrix bonding; 3) fiber homogeneity; 4) fiber alignment; 5) good interlayer bonding; and 6) minimal porosity.

Abstract:Exploring innovations in thermoplastic composites: Advancing 2D and 3D preparation techniques. Because of its inherent properties, the use of thermoplastic composites is expanding in a number of industries, including aerospace, rail transportation, and wind power generation. However, the development of 2D and 3D reinforced thermoplastic composite structures is hampered by the high viscosity and poor wetting of thermoplastic matrices, resulting in their application being mainly limited to nonload‐bearing components. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the technology and current applications of thermoplastic composites, covering materials, preform structures, manufacturing methods, process parameters, performance, and applications. It also provides an outlook on their future development. Highlights Thermoplastic composite has economic and environmental benefits. Summarized the current technology and application of thermoplastic composites. The manufacturing difficulty is the thermoplastic polymers wet fibers. One promising approach to the issue is prepreg technology. Prepreg technology make 3D thermoplastic composites become possible.

Abstract:Interfacial modification and additive manufacturing of continuous natural fiber‐reinforced composites. Natural fibers are lightweight, cost‐effective, readily available, and eco‐friendly materials. However, natural fiber‐reinforced composites are constrained by biological inconsistency and inferior fiber‐matrix interfacial properties, which restrict effective processing using advanced additive manufacturing methods. In this study, we develop a novel concept for natural fiber composite interfaces by growing hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanocrystals on jute fibers. The resulting hybrid composite is characterized using mechanical testing, nanoindentation, and modulus mapping. The interfacial region suggests a 31.4% increase in stiffness and possesses a storage modulus of up to 7.5 GPa. The tensile modulus and strength of the hybrid composite improves by 30% and 33%, respectively. Furthermore, we develop a novel process for the additive manufacturing of jute fiber thermoset composites through a direct writing (DW) process. The HAP modification increases thermal conductivity, consequently improving the curing process during DW and enhancing composite manufacturability. We demonstrate that the DW process enables the printing of intricate multilayer geometries with varying fiber content. Highlights Hydroxyapatite is used for natural fiber composite interfacial modification. Nanoindentation shows the interfacial region exhibits 31.4% higher stiffness. Modified composites possess superior mechanical performance. Jute fibers are thermally functionalized for composite additive manufacturing. A direct writing method is developed for continuous functionalized jute fiber.

Abstract:In recent years, flax fiber as a green and renewable resources have attracted considerable attention to be used as reinforcement in composites, using various technology. This review presents a summary of recent developments of flax fiber-based functional composites toward energy, biomedical, and environment. Firstly, we analyze the design and fabrication strategies, which are used for preparation of flax-based functional composites. The most promising applications of flax fiber-based composites are discussed subsequently. It is believed that flax fiber as a functional composites will play a crucial role in the field of energy, biomedical, and environment mainly attributed to its unique properties, such as specific mechanical properties, good biocompatibility, eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and amenability to various functional design and manufacturing needs.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing technology brings new revolutionary potential for the development of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Continuous carbon fiber reinforced composites developed using fused deposition modeling technology have the characteristics of high specific strength, high specific modulus, light weight, and flexible design, which is the solution direction for low-cost, rapid, and flexible application of advanced composite materials in the future. In this paper, the preparation of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites with continuous carbon fibers as reinforcement and thermoplastic/thermoset as matrix, surface modification and their mechanical properties are investigated, the interfacial characteristics and properties of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites under different pretreatment processes, auxiliary processes and post-treatment processes are studied, and the connection between the micro-morphology and the mechanical properties of this composite is further analyzed. The direction of defect resolution of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites fabricated by fused deposition technology is provided, and the future development direction is envisioned.

Abstract:Fiber reinforced polymer( FRP) materials are a relatively new material in civil and structural engineering,but due to their unique physical,chemical,and mechanical characteristics,they have gradually become an important part of the civil engineering materials toolkit. This paper surveys the use of FRP in structural reinforcement,cable elements,and prestressed concrete reinforcement,and discusses the development of FRP both in composite and pure-FRP structural applications. Furthermore,it highlights the development and present state of the various codes pertaining to the use of FRP in structural engineering in China with an eye towards encouraging better understanding and increased use of the material.

Abstract:Melt-spun surface structured fiber could be a large-scale versatile platform for materials with advanced surface function and local properties. Fibers with distinct surface and bulk structures are developed by tailoring the viscosity ratio and blend ratio of polymer component using the melt-spinning method. Spherical bulge and fibril groove structured fibers are obtained in different viscosity ratio and blend ratio systems. The interfacial bonding between fiber and matrix is improved due to the mechanical interlocking between the structured surface and matrix. The low-viscosity second phase stays as a spherical droplet even in high content. The second phase in matched- and high-viscosity ratio cases is deformed into fibril like droplet which causes an in-situ fibration of the second phase in polymer blend fiber with an enhanced mechanical property. This method provides a simple route to developing polymer materials with surface structure and appropriate mechanical properties to apply in textile and polymer fiber-reinforced composite materials.

Abstract:The conventional manufacturing process of fiber-reinforced metal matrix composites via liquid infiltration processes, preform manufacturing using inorganic binders is essential. However, the procedure involves binder sintering, which requires high energy and long operating times. A new fabrication process without preform manufacturing is proposed to fabricate short carbon fiber (SCF)-reinforced aluminum matrix composites using a low-pressure infiltration method. To improve the wettability between fiber and matrix, fibers were plated copper using an electroless plating process. The low-pressure infiltration method with preformless succeeded in manufacturing a composite with a volume fraction of about 30% of carbon fibers.The fiber orientation of the composite material manufactured without preform and the fiber orientation of the composite material manufactured using an inorganic binder was almost the same. The manufactured composites with preformless have high hardness and high thermal conductivity.

Abstract:This book presents an introduction to the design and manufacture of fibre-reinforced composites. The mechanical properties of unidirectional composites are considered in a structural design context. The use of woven and random fibres is also addressed. The accuracy of design estimates for unidirectional composites is benchmarked against test data, and the relevance of a factor of safety (FoS) is established. The importance of prototype testing is emphasised. This book illustrates how to make a fibre-reinforced composite. Wet layup, vacuum bagging and prepreg moulding are covered in detail. Some guidance on mould design and construction is also provided. Finally, an introduction to the manufacture of composite tubes is presented. Wherever possible, design and make examples are used to illustrate the content. Tutorial questions and problems are included at the end of each chapter. The reader is encouraged to use these questions and problems to assess their own level of understanding of the content.

Abstract:Epoxy is a widely used polymer because of its ease of processing, high adhesiveness, and high chemical resistance. Epoxy-based composites are commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and marine applications. The epoxy type, function, curing agent, and curing process are discussed in this chapter. Epoxy is used as either a filler or polymer matrix in composite applications. As a filler, the epoxy modification on the fiber is discussed. As a polymer matrix, the epoxy is reinforced by natural and synthetic fibers. The manufacturing process and the fabricated epoxy-based composites’ performance (e.g., mechanical and thermal properties) are investigated. The advantages and disadvantages of epoxy’s function are discussed and summarized. Epoxy modification is an effective approach to improve the composites’ performance.

Abstract:Over the last few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of lightweight composite materials. Due to their tailorable properties and unique characteristics (high strength, flexibility and stiffness), glass (GFs) and carbon (CFs) fibers are widely used in the production of advanced polymer matrix composites. Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) and Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites have been developed by different fabrication methods and are extensively used for diverse engineering applications. A considerable amount of research papers have been published on GFRP and CFRP composites, but most of them focused on particular aspects. Therefore, in this review paper, a detailed classification of the existing types of GFs and CFs, highlighting their basic properties, is presented. Further, the oldest to the newest manufacturing techniques of GFRP and CFRP composites have been collected and described in detail. Furthermore, advantages, limitations and future trends of manufacturing methodologies are emphasized. The main properties (mechanical, vibrational, environmental, tribological and thermal) of GFRP and CFRP composites were summarized and documented with results from the literature. Finally, applications and future research directions of FRP composites are addressed. The database presented herein enables a comprehensive understanding of the GFRP and CFRP composites’ behavior and it can serve as a basis for developing models for predicting their behavior.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforcements with an excellent mechanical performance to weight ratio are primarily preferred for advanced composite applications. The poor interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber surfaces and polymer molecules caused intrinsically by hydrophobicity and chemical inertness of carbon is a long existing issue to overcome. The article intends to review the research work carried out over the past couple of years in the area of carbon fiber surface modifications and carbon fiber/polymer interfacial adhesion. This paper provides a systematic and up-to-date account of various ‘wet’, ‘dry’ and ‘multi-scale’ fiber surface modification techniques, i.e., sizing, plasma, chemical treatments and carbon nano-tubes/nano-particles coating, for increasing the wettability and interfacial adhesion with polymeric matrices. The review highlights strategies for retaining the carbon fiber mechanical strength after surface modification and stresses its significance.

Abstract:Continuous fiber reinforced polymers composites have significant potential due to their high specific strength and high specific modulus. But there are some limitations on manufacturing and maintenance for the composites using existing manufacturing technologies. Meanwhile, the increasingly advanced 3D printing technology, with advantages on complex components building, no need for assembling operations and precise entity replication, has brought new hope for the manufacture and application of continuous fiber reinforced composites. However, compared to traditionally manufactured composites, poor interfacial adhesion is the main weakness of 3D printed composites. In the present work, a comprehensive review study on the identification, categories, characterization and measuring methods for interfaces in 3D printed composites is presented. Particularly, the effects of materials, processing and design parameters on the interfacial properties and mechanical behaviors of 3D printed composites are systematically discussed. Based on these investigation and discussion, compilation of effective methods and technologies is presented to improve the interfacial adhesion and reduce the generation of voids. Also, modeling and simulation approaches are also presented for the special case of 3D printed composites. This work therefore intends to provide a reference source regarding interfacial properties, processing control, processing scalability and product performance of 3D printed composites, that could help researchers proceed and make contributions to this research field.
