Abstract:Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with hollow structures exhibit many fascinating optical properties due to their special morphology. However, there are few reports on the exploration of hollow UCNPs and their optical applications, mainly because of the difficulty in constructing hollow structures by conventional methods. Here, we report a one-step template-free method to synthesize NaBiF 4 :Yb,Er (NBFYE) hollow UCNPs via Ostwald ripening under solvothermal conditions. Moreover, we also elucidate the possible formation mechanism of hollow nanoparticles (HNPs) by studying the growth process of nanoparticles in detail. By changing the contents of polyacrylic acid and H 2 O in the reaction system, the central cavity size of NBFYE nanoparticles can be adjusted. Benefiting from the structural characteristics of large internal surface area and high surface permeability, NBFYE HNPs exhibit excellent luminescence properties under 980 nm near-infrared irradiation. Importantly, NBFYE hollow UCNPs can act as self-referenced ratiometric luminescent thermometers under 980 nm laser irradiation, which are effective over a wide temperature range from 223 K to 548 K and have a maximum sensitivity value of 0.0065 K −1 at 514 K. Our work clearly demonstrates a novel method for synthesizing HNPs and develops their applications, which provides a new idea for constructing hollow structure UCNPs and will also encourage researchers to further explore the optical applications of hollow UCNPs.

Abstract:The Tm3+-doped NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles were fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method and they were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy as well as upconversion (UC) emission spectrum. Under the irradiation of 980 nm light, the as-prepared samples exhibited bright visible UC emissions originating from the intra-4f transitions of Tm3+ ions. The pump power-dependent UC emission spectra were measured to elaborate the involved UC mechanism. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent fluorescence intensity ratio from the thermally coupled levels (3F2,3 and 3H4) of Tm3+ ions was obtained to analyze the thermometric performances of the studied compounds. It is evident that the reaction temperature can not only improve the UC emission intensity of the Tm3+-doped NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles, but also modify its sensor sensitivity. Meanwhile, the maximum sensor sensitivity was found to be as high as 2.1 × 10−4 K−1 with a wide temperature range of 298–778 K, suggesting its potential application for physiological temperature sensing in biological tissues and cells. Ultimately, the Judd-Ofelt theory was employed to clarify the effect of reaction temperature on the temperature sensitivity.

Abstract:Luminescence intensity ratio (LIR)-based thermometry has the advantages of high relative sensitivity, fast temperature response, and high spatial resolution. However, the current LIR-based systems are mainly based on thermally coupled energy levels, which have low sensitivity due to the intrinsic limitation of the Boltzmann distribution theory. Here, we report a design of a core-shell-shell nanostructure to improve the thermal sensitivity by using the nonthermally coupled upconversion emissions. Ho3+ and Tm3+ were selected as emitters and spatially separated by an inert interlayer. The upconverted Tm3+ emissions show a dramatical thermal enhancement while the Ho3+ emissions show a decline with increasing temperature, resulting in a huge LIR (695 nm/645 nm) contrast and thereafter a high relative sensitivity (9.78% K-1 at room temperature). In addition, this nanostructure design presents a color change from red to blue at different excitation powers and also from red to green by tuning the excitation laser pulse widths. These results hold great potential in the field of noncontact ultrasensitive temperature sensors and multimodel anticounterfeiting.
Lanthanide-doped bismuth-based fluoride nanoparticles: controlled synthesis and ratiometric temperature sensing

Abstract:Bismuth-based nanoparticles, particularly NaBiF4 , have attracted extensive attention as hosts for lanthanides (Ln(3+)) ions and other luminescent ions in recent years. However, the controllable synthesis of NaBiF4 nanoparticles remains a challenge. Herein, different concentrations of Gd3+ ion-doped NaBiF4 : Yb3+/Er(3+ )upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have been successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. By changing the doping levels of Gd3+ ions (0-20%), the size of NaBiF4 : Yb3+/Er3+ UCNPs can be easily tuned from 200 nm to 50 nm, but the nanoparticles always maintained the hexagonal phase structure. Under 980 nm excitation, the as-synthesized NaBiF4 : Yb3+/Er3+/20%Gd3+ UCNPs showed desirable luminescent properties. Furthermore, the 980 nm excited luminescence temperature-sensing behavior of NaBiF4 : Yb3+/Er3+/20%Gd3+ UCNPs was achieved in a wide temperature range from 148 K to 498 K. These results provide strong evidence for the controllable synthesis of NaBiF4 UCNPs and their application in ratiometric temperature sensing.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) provide a remote temperature sensing approach to monitoring biological microenvironments. In this research, the UCNPs of NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+@NaYF4:Yb3+, Nd3+ with hexagonal (beta)-phase were synthesized and applied in cell temperature sensing as well as imaging after surface modification with meso-2, 3-dimercaptosuccinic acid. In the core-shell UCNPs, Yb3+ ions were introduced as energy transfer media between sensitizers of Nd3+ and activators of Er3+ to improve Er3+ emission and prevent their quenching behavior due to multiple energy levels of Nd3+. Under the excitations of 808 nm and 980 nm lasers, the NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+@NaYF4:Yb3+, Nd3+ nanoparticles exhibited an efficient green band with two emission peaks at 525 nm and 545 nm, respectively, which originated from the transitions of H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2) and S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) for Er3+ ions. We demonstrate that an occurrence of good logarithmic linearity exists between the intensity ratio of these two emission peaks and the reciprocal of the inside or outside temperature of NIH-3T3 cells. A better thermal stability is proved through temperature-dependent spectra with a heating-cooling cycle. The obtained viability of NIH-3T3 cells is greater than 90% after incubations of about 12 and 24 (h), and they possess a lower cytotoxicity of UCNPs. This work provides a method for monitoring the cell temperature and its living state from multiple dimensions including temperature response, cell images and visual up-conversion fluorescent color.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb3+/Tm3+@NaGdF4:Nd3+/Yb3+ upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were prepared using a solvothermal method, and the effects of key factors such as the content of sensitiser Nd3+ and Yb3+ on their luminescence properties were investigated. The nanoparticles are homogeneous in size and well dispersed. Under 808 nm excitation, it can produce strong upconversion fluorescence. At the same time, the nanoparticles have good temperature-sensing properties at the thermally coupled energy levels of 700 nm and 646 nm for Tm3+. Using its fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR), accurate temperature measurements can be performed, and it has been found that it exhibits different temperature sensing properties in low and high-temperature regions. The maximum relative sensitivity was found to be 0.88% K-1 and 1.89% K-1 for the low-temperature region of 285 K-345 K and the high-temperature region of 345 K-495 K. The nanoparticles were applied to the internal temperature measurement of lithium batteries and the actual high-temperature environment, respectively, and were found to have good temperature measurement performance.

Abstract:Water-soluble lanthanide (Ln(3+)) doped Bi2O3 nanospheres have been successfully prepared through a solid-state-chemistry thermal decomposition process. The nanospheres exhibit intense upconversion luminescence (UCL) by doping the Ln(3+) (Ln = Yb, Er/Ho/Tm) ions into the Bi2O3 host matrix under 980 nm excitation. The ratio of red/green emission of Bi2O3:Yb3+/Er3+ nanospheres exhibits a significant change as the calcination temperature increases and the value could reach 105.6. Moreover, the UCL of Bi2O3:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanospheres are temperature-sensitive, where the intensity ratios of 799 and 808 nm emissions increase monotonously with temperature. The MTT assay reveals that Bi2O3:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanospheres exhibit good biocompatibility by grafting citric acid molecules on the surface. The application possibility of Bi2O3:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanospheres as bioprobes for optical imaging in vivo is also confirmed by the high-contrast photoluminescence images between the background and the UCL imaging area.

Abstract:Lanthanide-activated upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have been widely applied for bioimaging and sensing. Their biomedical applications are usually limited by the thermal effect accompanied by UC emission, as most efficient UCNPs have to be excited at 980 nm, where strong absorption of water is located. We reported a core-shell NaYF4:Yb3+, Tm3+@NaYF4:Yb3+, Nd3+ nanosystem for temperature sensing with a minimized heating effect. Under excitation by an 808 nm laser, energy transfer from Nd3+ in the shell to Yb3+ in the shell then to Yb3+ in the core leads to the strong visible UC emission of Tm3+ at wavelengths of 450, 475, 645 and 696 nm. Based on a ratiometric approach, the nanosystem demonstrates a high sensitivity of up to 1.55% K (1) at a temperature range between 313 and 553 K. As both excitation and emission light can be modulated in the biological window, the developed nanosystem may have potential applications in remote optical temperature sensing in biomedical fields.
Engineering Visible to Near-Infrared Luminescence through a Selective Doping Strategy for High-Performance Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Luminescence nanothermometers have garnered considerable attention due to their noncontact measurement, high spatial resolution, and rapid response. However, many nanothermometers employing single-mode measurement encounter challenges regarding their relative sensitivity. Herein, a unique class of tunable upconversion (UC) and downshifting (DS) luminescence covering the visible to near-infrared range (400-1700 nm) is reported, characterized by the superior Tm3+, Ho3+, and Er3+ emissions induced by efficient energy transfer. The outstanding negative thermal expansion characteristic of ScF3 nanocrystals has been found to guide excitation energy toward the relevant emitting states in the Yb3+-Ho3+-Tm3+-codoped system, consequently resulting in remarkable near-infrared III (NIR-III) luminescence at ∼1625 nm (Tm3+:3F4 → 3H6 transition), which in turn presents numerous opportunities for designing multimode ratiometric luminescence thermometry. Furthermore, by facilitating phonon-assisted energy transfer in Er3+-Ho3+-codoped systems, the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) of 4I13/2 of Er3+ and 5I6 of Ho3+ in ScF3:Yb3+/Ho3+/Er3+ exhibits a strong temperature dependence, enabling NIR-II/III luminescence thermometry with superior thermal sensitivity and resolution (Sr = 0.78% K-1, δT = 0.64 K). These findings not only underscore the distinctive and ubiquitous attributes of lanthanide ion-doped nanomaterials but also hold significant implications for crafting luminescence thermometers with unparalleled sensitivity.

Abstract:A new concept of using luminescent nanoparticles for thermometry is described in this paper. To demonstrate this idea, the temperature-dependent emission characteristics of several luminescent nanoparticles have been investigated. The results show that some of them have a linear response above room temperature, which could be applied to temperature sensing. Semiconductor nanoparticles of CdTe and doped nanoparticles of ZnS:Mn2+ show a reversible linear temperature response over the physiological temperature range and have potential for biomedical thermometry. Double-doped nanoparticles of ZnS:Mn2+,Eu3+ show a different temperature response for each dopant; the ratio of their intensities provides a robust temperature measurement approach. Thermal instability of the nanoparticle stabilizer and nanoparticle surface defects is a possible reason for the irreversible thermal response of some nanoparticles.

Abstract:The NaYF4: Yb3+/Tm3+@NaYF4@β-CD upconversion nanoparticles were successfully prepared by the solvothermal method, and the samples were pure hexagonal phase with good crystallinity and homogeneous size, as evidenced by XRD and TEM analysis. The FT-IR analysis shows that β-CD is successfully encapsulated on the surface of NaYF4: Yb3+/Tm3+@NaYF4 nanoparticles. The fluorescence intensity and lifetime were significantly increased after coating the inert layer on the surface of core nanoparticles. After further surface modification of β-CD, the fluorescence intensity and fluorescence lifetime were reduced, but the overall fluorescence was stronger. Temperature measurements using the fluorescence intensity ratio technique were found to have relatively low reliability and absolute sensitivity for temperature measurements using thermally coupled energy levels. However, the reliability of temperature measurements using non-thermally coupled energy levels is significantly higher and the absolute sensitivity is much higher than for measurements at thermally coupled levels. Since the maximum absolute sensitivity, maximum relative sensitivity and minimum temperature resolution are determined to be 0.1179 K-1, 2.19 %K−1 and 0.00019 K, respectively, NaYF4: Yb3+/Tm3+@NaYF4@β-CD upconversion nanoparticles are expected to be widely used in the biomedical field due to their feasibility, reliability, non-toxicity and harmlessness.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/ZnO composite nanofibers have been prepared using the electrospinning method. A phase transfer process from α to β of NaYF4 occurred after calcination treatment, which provided a simple and effective way to enhance the upconversion luminescence of the nanosized NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+. The up-conversion emission intensity of the NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/ZnO composite nanofibers increased with an increase in the sintering temperature. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, based on the green up-conversion emissions of the NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/ZnO composite nanofibers, has been studied as a function of temperature. In the temperature range of 300–650K, the maximum sensitivity and temperature resolution is approximately 0.0049K−1 and 0.3K, respectively, which indicates that NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/ZnO is a promising material for applications in optical temperature sensing.

NIR to NIR luminescence thermometry in core/multishells-structured nanoparticles operating in the biological window

Abstract:Optical thermometry via near-infrared (NIR) emitting luminescent nanoparticles has attracted a great deal of attention during the last few years. In particular, nanothermometers operating in the biological windows are being strongly demanded for biomedical applications. In this sense, Tm3+ emissions centered around 800 and 1800 nm were explored here for ratiometric thermometry. And a luminescent thermometer based on NaYbF4/NaYF4: Tm3+-Yb3+/NaYF4 core/shell/shell-structured nanoparticles is designed. Excited by 980 nm laser, saturated emissions from Tm3+: 3H4→3H6 (∼800 nm: first biological window NIR-I) and Tm3+: 3F4→3H6 (∼1800 nm: third biological window NIR-III) transitions are readily obtained owing to the efficient upconversion processes in the core/multishells nanoparticles, finally resulting in the same dependence of NIR emissions on the pumping power. Different thermal response between 800 and 1800 nm emissions of Tm3+ ions enables optical thermometry via ratiometric method. In the physiological temperature range, the relative sensitivity Sr and absolute sensitivity Sa achieved here are about 0.33% K−1 and 3.9% K−1, respectively, with a temperature uncertainty of 0.75 K. These results illustrate that the nanothermometer developed in this work would be promising candidate for optical temperature measurement in bio-fields.

Fluoride Nanocrystals and Quantum Dots Nanocomposite for Efficient Luminescence Nanothermometer in Nir-Ii Biological Window

Abstract:Biosensors working in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) spectral region have recently gained great attention owning to their deep tissue bioimaging and high spatiotemporal resolution. However, there is still a challenge to develop efficient nanothermometers based on NIR-II luminescence. Herein, we present a pioneering advancement in the field of nanothermometry by synthesizing a novel nanothermometer, a composite of fluoride nanocrystals and quantum dots. This NaYF4:1Nd-Ag2S QDs@SiO2 nanocomposite demonstrates exceptional functionality, being excited by a single light irradiation at 808nm for NIR-II luminescence imaging. Notably, the composite emits at two distinct wavelengths-1064 nm and 1125nm, attributable to Nd3+ and Ag2S QDs, respectively. This unique emission profile enables deeper tissue penetration, mitigating overheating risks compared to conventional excitation sources at 980nm. Furthermore, the nanomaterials exhibit remarkable temperature-sensing capabilities, with maximum sensitivities of 0.81%K-1 (SR) at 333K. These superior sensitivities outperform many existing temperature sensors relying on thermally coupled Stark sublevels. The SiO2 matrix not only encapsulates and protects the fluoride nanocrystals and quantum dots but also shields them from aqueous environments, ensuring outstanding luminescence stability. Our findings highlight the potential of this nanothermometer as a highly efficient temperature sensor with promising applications in cutting-edge bioapplications. This development introduces a new frontier in temperature sensing and bioimaging, showcasing its potential for transformative contributions to the field.

Abstract:NaYF4 as the core and NaGdF4 as the outer layer were used to obtain NaYF4:Yb3+/Tm3+@NaYF4:Ce3+/Eu3+ nanoparticles. Physical and morphological investigations indicated that the obtained nanoparticles were prepared in a hexagonal shape, with the NaGdF4 shell layer uniformly encapsulated on the NaYF4 core. Strong Tm3+ upconversion emission peaks were observed for a 980-nm-laser-excited sample, while strong Eu3+ downconversion emission peaks were observed for a 254-nm-laser-excited sample. By zonal doping of Tm3+ and Eu3+, their fluorescence intensity can be significantly increased; more importantly, simultaneous temperature measurements with dual-mode upconversion/downconversion can be achieved. The temperature measurement properties of the dual mode were also investigated, and it was discovered that the upconversion 3F3 → 3H6 and 1G4 → 3F4 thermocouple energy levels gave the best temperature measurements with maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of 0.0877 K–1 and 1.95% K–1, respectively, which are better than the current temperature measurement sensitivities of most rare-earth-based materials. This material was prepared as fiber-optic temperature-sensing probes to detect the temperature in the environment in real time and was found to perform excellently for temperature measurement.
