Abstract:Textile wastewater treatment is highly challenging due to the simultaneous existence of organic compounds and inorganic salts. Herein, we report a novel application of forward osmosis (FO), a non-pressure-driven membrane process, in textile wastewater treatment. Specifically, a symmetric FO membrane with outstanding selectivity between salts and organics (i.e., allowing the permeation of water and salts while hindering the permeation of organics) is fabricated. With a draw solution containing macromolecules (i.e., sodium polyacrylate), the staged FO process can achieve simultaneous desalination and concentration of synthetic textile wastewaters (97.8- 99.4% salt removal and 10-fold dye concentration). Compared to nanofiltration and ultrafiltration processes (i.e., conventional pressure driven membrane processes for textile wastewater treatment), the staged FO process experiences notably alleviated organic fouling. The organic fouling on the symmetric membrane can be readily reversed by simple alkaline flushing. Lastly, the staged FO process was challenged by running a three-stage FO test with a practical real textile wastewater, demonstrating its practical viability. Overall, our study not only presents a novel strategy for textile wastewater treatment but also broadens FO applications in wastewater treatment and resource recovery.
