Abstract:The Beishan orogenic belt,locating in the south of the Central Asian orogenic belt(CAOB),witnesses a panoramic scenario of continental crustal accretion and reworking in the model of plate tectonics during the Paleozoic-Triassic.It is driven by rifting-spreading-extinction cycle of paleo-oceans and subduction-collision-extension processes at convergent plate margin,with a series of the associated magmatic events.The generation of syn-and post-orogenic granitoids represents horizontal(lateral) and vertical crustal growth.Based on an overview on the geochronological and geochemical data concerning the Paleozoic magmatic rocks from the Liuyuan area,the paper outlines the evolved geodynamic scenarios inherent in these magmatic sequences,reveals multi-stage crustal accretion and reworking mechanism during the Paleozoic continental construction in south Beishan belt and promises magmatic and tectonic reservoirs for metallogenesis.

Abstract:Shanyang-Zhashui ore concentration area is one important unit of the Qinling metallogenic belt. It experienced oceanic subduction and continental collision during Neoproterozic and Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous periods, which formed different types of mineralization and ore deposits such as Cu, PbZn, Ag, Fe, Mo and Au in different process of tectonic evolution. The titanomagnetite deposit which is hosted in the mafic rocks was formed by subduction of the Paleo-Qinling Ocean during Neoproterozoic. Continous subduction of the Paleo-Qinling Ocean resulted in formation of Shanyang-Zhahui forearc basin which hosted in sedimentary-type deposits of Fe, Ag and PbZn during Devonian-Permian. From Triassic to Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, North China collided with South China and related mineralization also formed during this process, but the Triassic porphyry-skarn type of Mo deposits and orogenic type of Au deposits formed in the collisional environment and Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous porphyry-skarn type of CuMo-Au deposits formed in a post-collisional extensive environment. These facts indicate that these ore deposits in Shanyang-Zhashui ore concentration area are the products of the tectono-magmatism, corresponding with different stage of tectonic evolution. It is important to objectively understand the evolution the Qinling orogenic belt.

Abstract:The continental crust of China is a mosaic of cratonic blocks and orogenic belts, containing small cratons and terranes with various tectonic settings. They have diverse origins and complex histories of amalgamation, and often suffered repeated reworking after multiple episodes of amalgamation. In the last three decades, extensive geological, geochemical and geophysical investigations have been carried out on these cratonic blocks and intervening orogenic belts, producing an abundant amount of new data and competing interpretations. This provides important insights into understanding the formation and evolution of the Chinese continents. The papers assembled in this volume present a timely and comprehensive overview on major advancements and controversial issues related to the formation and evolution of continental crust in China. Complex tectonic histories were experienced not only by the large-scale cratonic blocks and orogenic belts, but also by small-scale terranes and orogens between and inside these blocks. Nevertheless, our understanding of lithotectonic units and geological processes has been greatly advanced by recent studies of zirconology and geochemistry for various rock types from major petrotectonic units in China. It has been further advanced from integrated interpretations of geochemical and petrological data for petrogenesis of magmatic rocks. An overview of these observations and interpretations provides new insights into understanding the continental plate tectonics and the chemical geodynamics of subduction zones. Compound orogeny and scientific problems concerning the Central Orogenic Belt of China

Abstract:Orogenic belts widely distributed in the Earth have recorded the history of plate convergence and orogenic processes during the collision.Many of these belts are long-lived(>300 Ma) compound belts,which are more than 1000 km wide with a pre-orogenic thermal structure that provides evidence for continental growth.In the past decade,research has begun to focus on the long-term dynamics of such belts as well as their tectonic features and processes.A number of critical problems remain existent,which include the origins of the longterm activities,the mechanism of continental accretion,and the rheological and thermal structure of such orogens.The Central Orogenic Belt of China(COB) is a huge compound orogen,which extends more than 5000 km across central China and marks the boundary between the North China Block and the South China Block.The COB has been active for ～600 Ma,and during this time it underwent two major collisions,one in the Devonian and the other in the Triassic.In addition,the region has become tectonically active since the Cretaceous.The COB differs from other compound orogens in having a very complex structure,multiple long-term orogenic events,convergence of orogens and accretion of continents.The recent discovery of a large high-and ultrahighpressure metamorphic belt(HP-UHP) in the orogen and the recognition of two HP-UHP metamorphic events indicate the subduction of both oceanic and continental crust to the depth greater than 100 km.Thus,the COB is as important in the tectonic evolution of Asia as the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.Some of the critical unanswered questions regarding the COB include the nature of the continental convergence,collision and orogeny in the Devonian and Triassic and the formation of intracontinental sedimentary basins during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic.Also unclear are the temporal and spatial relationships of the HP-UHP metamorphic belts and the conditions under which deep subduction and exhumation of oceanic/ continental crust took place.Likewise,the processes responsible for the long-term tectonic activity,the multiple and overlapping orogenies,and the thermal structure of the region are unclear.In addition,little is known about the genesis of the mineral deposits in the region and the oil and gas potential of adjacent Mesozoic and Cenozoic basins.
Geological evolution and metallogeny in the core part of the Central Asian metallogenicdomain

Abstract:The important characteristics of the geological evolution in the core part of the Central Asian metallogenic domain are its multi-stage growth and evolution of Paleozoic crust, polycyclic mobilization-remobilization materials and long-continued and cyclic metallogenic environment. These characteristics determined multiple transport and concentration of ore-forming materials. This metallogenic domain comprises several metallogenic provinces and its core part is composed of the Altay, circum-Balkhash-Junggar and Central-South Tianshan metallogenic provinces. A metallogenic province includes several metallogenic belts, each metallogenic belt is made up of several ore deposit concentration areas, and each ore deposit concentration area contains at least one large or superlarge deposit. After the closing of the Paleo-Asian Ocean, the Indosinian metallogenesis developed in the core of the Central Asian metallogenic domain was mainly controlled by ductile shear zones and small-scale crust-derived magmatism. The key scientific problems in the core of this metallogenic domain include the constraint of the fluid-magmatic evolution on mineralization in the Paleo-South Tianshan subduction zone, environment for the formation of the gigantic porphyry copper belt, reconstruction of the Late Paleozoic tectonic framework, characteristics of the gigantic ductile shear zone and its controlling mechanism for gold mineralization.

Abstract:The Tethys domain preserves one of the largest continent-continent collisional orogenic belts on Earth. This belt can be divided into the Proterozoic to Palaeozoic Proto-Tethyan orogenic belt, Late Palaeozoic to Triassic Palaeo-Tethyan orogenic belt and Triassic to Cenozoic Meso- and Neo-Tethyan orogenic belts. The Tethyan metallogenic domain, representing one of the three major metallogenic domains in the world, extends more than 10,000 km from east to west and has developed world-class ore belts, such as the South-east Asia tin ore belt, Sanjiang metallogenic belt in South-west China, Gangdese-Pakistan-Iran porphyry copper belt and South-east Europe epithermal gold belt. The geology of the Tethys domain has been studied for more than 100 years and many important advances have been made recently, although scientific issues remain controversial. This thematic section of Geological Journal contains 10 articles focusing on the formation of rocks and ore deposits, including petrology and geochemistry of magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, and the formation mechanism of mineral deposits in the Eastern Tethyan Realm. These articles reflect new progress in related studies and provide important reference for future studies.

Abstract:The East Asian continent records a complex geologic and tectonic history that involved the amalgamation of several small- to medium-sized blocks from Laurasia or Gondwana. The China continent is located at the core of East Asia, and is the key to understanding the formation and evolution of the East Asian Continent. The most important tectonic framework controlling the formation and evolution of the main China continent is the EW-trending Central China Orogenic Belt and the NS-trending Helan-Chuandian Orogenic Belt, defined as the ‘Cross Orogenic Belts’. The former includes, from east to west, the Qinling, Qilian and Kunlun Orogens, which were formed by the subduction-collision between the southern and northern continental blocks during the Early Paleozoic–Triassic and constitute the mainland of China Continent. Following this, the Central China Orogenic Belt was overprinted by the Mesozoic to Cenozoic intracontinental orogenic events, resulting in a prominent north and south division of geology, geography, ecology, environment, economy and culture. The latter inherited the Paleoproterozoic and the Neoproterozoic plate tectonic frameworks in its north and south, respectively, and was gradually transformed into the continental margin of the Paleo-Asian Ocean or Paleo-Tethys tectonic domain. Associated with the Neo-Tethys tectonic evolution, it evolved into the eastern boundary of the uplift and expansion of the Tibetan Plateau, controlling the Late Mesozoic–Cenozoic reverse evolution of the western and eastern China Continent. The Cross Orogenic Belts experienced multiple phases of uplift, which were dominated by deep geological process together with surface geomorphologic influence. The uplift of the Cross Orogenic Belts resulted in differential evolution of the climate, environment, as well as economy and culture in four quadrants of the China Continent.

This special issue reports recent progress on the tectonic evolution, magmatism and ore deposits of South China, which leads to a more comprehensive understanding of the Mesozoic large scale magmatism and mineralization events: (1) South China has been located in backarc settings during multiple subductions since the Paleozoic, which may have contributed to pre-enrichments of the ore-forming materials. (2) The Pacific plate subduction was a principle factor that controlled the late Mesozoic large scale magmatism and mineralization in South China, through flat subduction, ridge subduction/slab tearing and slab rollbacks.

Abstract:<p>South China hosts more than 80% W reserves of China and about 50% of the world, with thousands of world-class W deposits of various types. Recently, more and more giant W deposits have been discovered in both the Nanling region to the south and the Yangtze River region to the north, such as the Zhuxi, Dahutang, Pangushan, and Taoxikeng deposits. In this paper, based on previous publications and new exploration results of the W deposits in South China, the majority of such deposits are reviewed, and are divided into 8 types: quartz-vein, skarn, greisen, porphyry, granite veinlet-disseminated, fractural-hydrothermal, stratabound, and weathering-placer types. Those deposits are closely related to the widely-distributed granitoids.These ore-bearing granitoids typically belong to S-type or highly-fractionated I-type metaluminous-peraluminous calc-alkaline granitic magma series. The magma fractionation degrees are generally increased from those associated with skarn-type W deposits to those with veinlet-disseminated deposits. Crust materials played a key role in the formation of these W-mineralized granites, and also contributed to the various associated metals, such as W-Cu, W-Sn, W-Bi, W-Mo, and W-Be.</p><p>According to the temporal-spatial association of W deposits with tectono-thermal events in South China, three metallogenic belts can be outlined for future exploration: Nanling W metallogenic Belt (NLB) (170∼150 Ma), Eastern Yangtze W metallogenic Belt (EYB) (150∼120 Ma), and Southeast Coast W metallogenic Belt (SCB) (120∼80Ma). According to the deep crustal structure features of these W metallogenic belts combined with characteristics of different W mineralization types, a generic model is proposed for the formation of the Mesozoic W deposits in South China. During the Mesozoic, from the southeast coast to the inland, the South China block experienced the west-toward subduction, retreating and conversion of the paleo-Pacific plate. Furthermore, deep faults in different areas enhance the local crust-mantle interaction, and W deposits types and temporal-spatial distribution of Mesozoic W deposits in different belts have good correspondence to the deep processes.</p>

The tectonic evolution of the southern segment of Tancheng-Lujiang fault zone and the metallogenesis in its adjacent region: Implications from the high precision geochronology

Abstract:Tancheng-Lujiang(Tan-Lu)fault zone is a lithospheric deep fault zone with the trending of NNE-NE in eastern China. There are four concentrated mineral areas which including Au mine of Jiaodong Peninsula,Fe-Au mine of western Shangdong Province,Fe-Cu mine of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and oil and gas field of northern Jiangsu Province. Based on a large amount of high precision dating data,the tectono-magmatic-mineralization events of these areas can be classified into three phases: 1)Early phase(800～550 Ma). In this phase,pan-paleocontinent breakup commenced in Neoproterozoic,paleo-seism occurred in Caledonian and local volcanic-sedimentary exhalative in shallow marine environments in Hercynian demonstrated that the "tectonic activity prelude" of crustal movement had been unclosed. The prior tectonic weakness belt of North China Craton lithosphere was succeeded and constructed in this phase,which can described as metallogenesis preparation period. 2)Main phase(180～110 Ma). The present tectonic frame of Tan-Lu fault zone was accomplished by continent collision of Yangtze Plate and northern China Plate in Triassic,and dive of west Pacific Plate in Mesozoic to Eurasian Plate. Especially in around 140～120 Ma,calc-alkaline,high-K and high Sr calc-alkaline magmas as well as metallogenesis fluids in the late stages of magmatism ascent made violent activities and deposited as metallogenesis along favourite tectonic space. Crustal thinning,crust-mantle delamination and mantle-derived magma underplating led to the appearance of syntexis-type and transformation-type granites which is not due to any single tectonic movement. This phrase can be described as summit grade. 3)Late phase(60 Ma～now). There is usually olive-basalt spouting along the junctions of EW and NNE(or NE)trending faults,which offers heat and material sources for the formation of oil and gas. Significant Achievements and Open Issues in Study of Orogenesis and Metallogenesis Surrounding the North China Continent.

Abstract:The significant achievements in past four-year study of Orogenesis and Metallogenesis Surrounding the North China Continent, which is a huge project granted by the National 973-Program, are briefly summarized in this paper. The concepts of ultramafic-mafic rock-hosted hydrothermal Cu-Ni-precious metals deposit and epizonogenism are defined; and consequently, the hydrothermal ore-systems can be classified into three series, i.e. magmatic, metamorphic and epizonogenic. On the basis of discovery and identification of numerous orogenic-type Ag, Pb-Zn, Cu and Mo deposits in the interest area, a new term of orogenic-type deposits and a new element zoning model for orogenic-type ore-system have been introduced to renew the concept of orogenic-type gold and its crustal continuum model, respectively. Indosinian mineralizations, especially intrusion-related hypothermal Mo mineralization, were determined to have occurred in both southern and northern margins of the North China continent. Intra-continental intrusion-related hypothermal ore-systems are rich in CO2, K and F, which differ from those developed in island arcs. The Carlin-type and Carlin-like gold deposits in compressive orogenic areas usually contain CO2-H2O fluid inclusions which cannot be observed the same kind ore-systems developed in back-arc Basin-and-Range provinces. The Central Asian and Central China orogenic belts have been from strongly continental accretion and weakly continental collision and weakly continental accretion and strongly continental collision, respectively, which leads them to have quite different type ore-systems and metallic commodities. The eastern portions of the North China continent and its adjacent orogenic belts accommodate large-scale Yanshanian mineralization gradiently younging eastward, with differing genetic types and metal inventories, which possibly resulted from their tectonic evolution combined with interaction with Pacific plate. Pre-collision hydrothermal ore-systems were reworked more or less, of which some re-mobilized and re-emplaced as other genetic types of ore deposits. Intrusion-related hypothermal Mo mineralizations of ca 1.9 Ga and 1.75 Ga and orogenic type Ag-Au-Mo mineralization of ca 430 Ma were recently discovered in Qinling Mountains, whilst the Mongolia-Hinggan Mountains were reported to have Devonian orogenic Cu-Au lodes, indicating the exploration potential for pre-Mesozoic ore deposits. Ore-system is evidenced to be an ideal probe to geodynamics, and by this way the post-120Ma erosion total of Qinling-Dabie-SuLu orogen is estimated less than 10 km with an average rate of 0.04 mm per year, suggesting that the rapid uplift must occur before 130 Ma if there is. It is constrained that the Paleo-Asian Ocean closed from west to cast along the Solonker-Yanji geosuture during the period of from 260 to 250 Ma; while the northern branch of the Palco-Tethys Ocean was finally closed at ca 220 Ma. The North China craton is revealed to have been involved in supercontinent cycles including Kenor, Columbia, Rodinia, Gondwana and Pangea, as well as the Lomagundi Event which is characterized by positive delta(13)Ccarb excursion; and deposition of the khondalite series in North China craton was dated to be <2.3 Ga.Suggested key open issues include: duration and geologic marker of onset and end of continental collision orogenesis; identification and targeting of pre-Mesozoic ore-systems; regional regularities and differences of Yanshanian large-scale mineralizations; and detailed process kind mechansm of transition and/or combination of tectonic domains or regimes.

Abstract:The South China continent including the Yangtze Block and the Cathaysia Block is an uncommon world-class polymetallic metallogenic province with great ore-forming potential.The formation and evolution of the South China continent had undergone specific intra-continental dynamic processes,in which the Late Permian plume-related metallogenic system,the Mesozoic huge low-temperature metallogenic system and the metallogenic system of the Mesozoic great granite province are quite distinctive in the world.Thus,the South China continent becomes an ideal international base for studying the intra-continental mineralization.The studies, in various levels,of how the continental dynamic processes over different geological time control the mineralization in the South China continent have been carried out and have had important achievements.On the basis of these studies,this paper presents the major scientific questions for further research on the three metallogenic systems.

Abstract:AbstractThe Qinling‐Dabie‐Sulu orogen is the eastern part of the Central China Orogenic Belt. Looking back on previous studies of the sedimentary record we systematically compiled the dataset of detrital zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotopes for this orogenic belt. The dataset incorporates a comprehensive compilation of 32,449 detrital zircon U–Pb ages and 979 Hf isotopes. The findings demonstrate that distinct tectonic units within the orogenic belt exhibit unique tectonic evolution histories during various geological epochs. This dataset can be used to constrain the tectonic framework and orogenic evolution including ocean subduction, continental collision and orogen exhumation. It can be integrated with other geological datasets to improve our understanding of the Central Orogenic Belt in China, and possibly plate tectonics globally.

Abstract:The Chinese Tianshan Belt is one of the key regions for the understanding of tectonics of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). An international field excursion and workshop were organized to conduct a common observation and discussion on the tectonic evolution of the Chinese Tianshan. This report summarizes the main achievements, including acknowledged geological features, controversial and remaining scientific problems, and discussion of a tentative geodynamic model. Thus, it is helpful to clarify what has been done in the past, what should be improved and what needs to be done in the future and therefore to better understand the tectonics of the Chinese Tianshan Belt and the CAOB as well.
