Abstract:The Altai Mountains are a key area for understanding the development of the Altai Tectonic Collage and accretionary orogen. However, the orogenic processes, particularly their early stage, have not been well understood. In this work, we undertake zircon U‐Pb dating of six Paleozoic synorogenic plutons in order to better define the early magmatic and tectonic evolution of the Chinese Altai Mountains. The results revealed three Paleozoic granitic plutonic events at ca. 460, 408, and 375 Ma. These ages, along with the structural patterns of the plutons, suggest two periods of regional deformation, 460–410 Ma and 410–370 Ma. The granitoids mainly follow the tholeiitic and calc‐alkaline trends and are mostly I type. Sr‐Nd isotopic analyses indicate that the sources of the granitoids contain both old continental and younger (juvenile) mantle‐derived components. Chemical, isotopic, and structural features suggest that the plutons were formed mainly in continental arc settings and that the subduction and accretion processes began at ca. 460 Ma and culminated at ca. 408 Ma. Thus, the Altai orogen was mainly built up during early‐middle Paleozoic time, rather than during late Paleozoic time. Furthermore, the southern Altai terrane comprises not only Silurian to Devonian island arcs but also old continental fragments. With these new constraints, we present a new model to account for the tectonic evolution of the Altai orogen. This model proposes that early‐middle Paleozoic Altai orogenic processes could have experienced formation of an active continental margin, the splitting of this margin to form a back‐arc oceanic basin, and the final closing of the back‐arc basin. Consequently, the opening and closure of back‐arc basins along active margins is probably a common process in the central Asian accretionary orogen.
Triassic Granitic Magmatism at the Northern Margin of the North China Craton: Implications of Geochronology and Geochemistry for the Tectonic Evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Abstract:The early Mesozoic marked an important transition from collisional orogeny to post‐orogenic extension at the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). In this study, we undertook zircon U‐Pb dating and whole‐rock major‐ and trace‐element geochemical analyses of early Mesozoic granitic rocks in the Chifeng area to establish their geochronological framework, petrogenesis, and implications for the tectonic evolution of the eastern Central Asia Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Zircon U‐Pb dating results show that these rocks were emplaced in three stages during the Triassic: (1) syenogranites during 250–248 Ma, (2) granodiorites during 244–243 Ma, and (3) monzogranites and granodiorites during 232–230 Ma. These Triassic granitoids belong to the high‐K calc‐alkaline series and are evolved I‐type granites. They have high SiO2 and low MgO contents with enrichments in light rare‐earth elements, Zr, Hf, Rb, Th, and U, and depletions in Ba, Nb, Ta, Sr, and Eu. These geochemical data indicate that the granitoids were derived from partial melting of a lower‐crustal source under relatively low‐pressure conditions and subsequently underwent extensive fractional crystallization. Considering both the geochemical data and regional geological information, we propose that the 250–248 Ma syenogranites were emplaced in an extensional environment linked to slab break‐off after closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean (PAO) along the Solonker‐Xra Moron‐Changchun suture zone. The 244–243 Ma granodiorites were formed in a compressional orogenic setting during collision between the Erguna‐Xing'an‐Songliao composite block and the NCC. The 232–230 Ma granodiorites and monzogranites were emplaced during the transition from compressional orogeny to post‐orogenic extension. Overall, the early Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the Chifeng area can be divided into three main stages: (1) closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean and extension related to slab break‐off during the Early Triassic; (2) continuous collisional compression during the Middle Triassic after closure of the PAO; and (3) post‐orogenic extension during the Late Triassic, most probably due to lithospheric delamination after amalgamation of the Erguna‐Xing'an‐Songliao composite block and the NCC.
Research progress on seismic structures of crust and mantle beneath Tien Shan and their geodynamic implications

Abstract:The mechanisms causing the uplifting of the Tien Shan, one of the largest and most active intracontinental orogenic belts on Earth, have been vigorously debated for decades. Seismic investigation is a fundamental tool used for deep structural exploration and is key to understanding continental geodynamics. As such, in this study, we reviewed the recent research progress on the crustal and upper-mantle structures of the Tien Shan and the remaining controversies. The results showed that the Tien Shan and adjacent basins exhibit contrasting structural and physical properties from the crust down to the upper mantle in various aspects, such as crustal thickness, Moho morphology, mantle transition-zone thickness, seismic velocity, and seismic attenuation. The mountainous areas have complex crustal seismic anisotropy patterns, whereas orogen-parallel anisotropic fabrics dominate at upper mantle depths. Low-velocity anomalies pervasively exist in the mid-lower crust and uppermost mantle of Tien Shan. Taken together, these observations provide evidence of the important roles played by intracontinental subduction and mantle upwelling in Cenozoic orogenesis of the Tien Shan. However, further development of our understanding of the geodynamics in Tien Shan has been hindered by the low imaging resolution of seismic anisotropy, lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, and mantle transition zone in eastern Tien Shan. And some important geophysical parameters and their implications are still far from being well-understood. Future deployment of dense temporary seismic arrays in the eastern Tien Shan and joint inversion of multiple and complementary geophysical data will considerably increase the resolution of seismic models and ultimately enhance our knowledge of geodynamic evolution in compressional intracontinental orogens.
Nd–Sr Isotopic Mapping of the Chinese Altai and Implications for Continental Growth in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Abstract:The Chinese Altai orogen is a typical domain of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt and in previous syntheses was divided into six tectonic units (or terranes). In this paper, 41 new and 36 published whole-rock Nd and Sr isotopic data for granitoid intrusions and mafic dykes within units 2 and 3 of the central Altai and units 4 to 6 of the southern Altai were used for isotopic mapping. The age of the samples used is known from U-Pb zircon dating. epsilon(Nd)(t) values range from -4 to +2 in the central Altai units 2 and 3, and from + 1.4 to +6 in the southern Altai units 4 and 5 and up to +8.4 in unit 6. Correspondingly, Nd model ages (T-DM) decrease from 1.6-1.1 Ga in the central Altai to 1.0-0.5 Ga in the southern Altai, except for a continental fragment in unit 4. I-Sr is elevated in the central units, decreasing to <0.705 in the southern units 5 and 6. These results demonstrate that the central Altai contains widespread old crustal components in its basement, whereas the southern Altai comprises a higher proportion of juvenile crust. When integrated with published U-Pb zircon ages, our data show that new crust grew southwards in the Chinese Altai. In addition, our data suggest that units 2 and 3 are a single tectonic unit, whereas the southern Altai (unit 4), which previously was regarded as a single young accretionary terrane, should be subdivided into two units: a younger arc and an older continental fragment. The granitoids in the Chinese Altai can be divided into syn- and post-/non-orogenic groups. The syn-orogenic granitoids have ca. 50-80% mantle-derived component, whereas the post/non-orogenic granitoids contain ca. 70-90%. The generation of syn- and post-/non-orogenic granitoids represents horizontal (lateral) and vertical crustal growth, which contributed ca. 18-28% and 7-8% respectively to the area of the Chinese Altai. This work shows that isotopic mapping is an effective approach to elucidate terrane composition in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt and thereby better constrain Palaeozoic crustal growth. Spatial and Temporal Variations of Granitoids in the Altay Orogen and Their Implications for Tectonic Setting and Crustal Growth: Perspectives from Chinese Altay

Abstract:The Altay orogen,which stretches across the boundary areas among China,Russia,Kazakhstan and Mongolia,is a major unit of the Central Asia Orogenic Belt.Numerous granitoid plutons occur in the orogen.This paper has summarized the spatial and temporal evolution of the plutons and discussed their tectonic setting and implications for crustal growth.According to zircon ages available,these plutons can be divided into three periods,namely early-middle Paleozoic,late Paleozoic and Mesozoic.The early-middle Paleozoic plutons can be subdivided into 470～440 Ma (middle-late Ordovician) and 425～360 Ma (late Ordovician-Late Devonian),the late Paleozoic into 355～318 Ma (early Carboniferous) and 290～270 Ma (early Permian),and the Mesozoic mainly into 245～190 Ma (middle-late Triassic-early Jurassic).The early-middle Paleozoic (470～360 Ma) plutons that occur widely are mainly of calc-alkaline I type subjected to various degrees of deformation,in which 470～440 Ma plutons occur as gneissic bodies.They were formed during syn-accretion orogenic processes,from the early active continental subduction (470～440 Ma) through continuous subduction/back-arc extension (420～380 Ma) to collision (380～360 Ma).The early Carboniferous plutons occur in the southern part of the orogen,and some of them are alkaline and show circular or irregular shape with insignificant deformation.They were emplaced in a late (or post) orogenic setting.The early Permian plutons mainly occur in the southern part of the orogen,with a few seen in the central part.They are mostly of circular shape and show very weak or no deformation except for a few deformed ones in the Ertix slip zone.The rock types are characterized by I and A types in association with mafic intrusions including dykes,displaying a post-orogenic extensional setting.The early Mesozoic plutons,showing circular or irregular shape without deformation,are characterized by high-differentiation I-type and S-type,associated with rare metal deposits.They were emplaced in an intercontinental setting.Nd isotopic mapping of the plutons indicates that eNd(t) values are lower (-4 to +2) in central Altay and higher (+1.4 to +6) in southern Altay; correspondingly,tDM values decrease from 1.6～1.1 Ga in central Altay to 1.0～0.5 Ga in southern Altay.These results demonstrate that central Altay contains widespread old continental basement,whereas southern Altay comprises a significant proportion of juvenile crust,suggesting that the crust grew southward.The horizontal (lateral) and vertical crustal growth contributed ca.18%～28% and 7%～8%,respectively,to the area of Chinese Altay.The authors' studies also suggest that the Altay orogen preserved original accretional crustal structures during Mesozoic,without large-scale vertical tectonic superposition.The Altay orogen experienced formation of an active continental margin,splitting of the margin to form a back-arc ocean and the final closing of the back-arc ocean.It is also held that the CAOB underwent not only accretional processes but also back-arc opening and closure of microcontinent margins,which might have been a common process in the central Asian accretionary orogen.
Multi-phase tectonothermal evolution in the SE Chinese Altai, central Asia: Structures, U-Pb monazite ages and tectonic implications

Abstract:<p>The tectonothermal evolution of the interior of the vast Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is poorly understood. In this study, detailed structural observation, combined with petro-structural analysis and U-Pb monazite geochronological investigation were conducted in the southeastern Chinese Altai, aiming to decipher the Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the heartland of the CAOB. The study area is mainly composed of an Ordovician metasedimentary sequence of the Altai accretionary wedge in the north and a Devono-Carboniferous volcanoclastic sequence of the Junggar oceanic arc system in the south. An early tectonothermal event affected only the Ordovician sequence exemplified by the development of a sub-horizontal metamorphic S1 fabric, in part associated with partial melting. This fabric is characterized by the occurrence of lowpressure/hightemperature sillimanite and/or andalusitebearing metamorphic assemblages in structurally lower and higher levels, respectively, interpreted as recording an extension phase of deformation. The presence of a Barrovian-type mineral residuum (e.g., staurolite) in the migmatitic S1 foliation probably reflects an earlier crustal burial and hence thickening phase. The S1 fabric was reworked by roughly EW-directed D2 shortening, forming a nearly N-S-oriented upright to inclined folds and linear system in the Ordovician sequence. A further NE-SW-directed D3 shortening formed heterogeneous NW-SE-trending F3 fold zones, bounded by mylonitic zones, and steep penetrative schistosity S3 in both Ordovician and Devono-Carboniferous sequences in the study area. U-Pb monazite geochronological investigations suggest that D1 extension developed around 394 Ma or earlier, D2 shortening took place soon after the extension, probably at 380–370 Ma, and D3 nearly orthogonal shortening activated during Early Permian (288–274 Ma). Combined with existing regional data, our results favor a tectonic evolution of multiple short-lived shortening-extension cycles, as a proxy of alternating retreats and advances of the subduction system, governing the Devonian tectonothermal evolution in the Chinese Altai. In contrast, the Permian tectonothermal history reflects a tectonic switching from a roughly E-W- to a N-S-orientated convergent regime in response to the terminal collision of the Chinese Altai with its southerly Junggar arc system in association with gradual closure of small residual oceanic basins in the heartland of the CAOB during the Permian.</p>

Geochemical and Isotopic Studies of the Sedimentary and Granitic Rocks of the Altai Orogen of Northwest China and Their Tectonic Implications

Abstract:The Altai orogen (northwest China) represents the southwestern margin of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Geochemical and Nd–Sr isotope analyses were carried out on the Palaeozoic sedimentary and granitic rocks in order to trace their sources and to evaluate the pattern of continental growth of the orogen. Nd isotopic data for both the granites and sediments suggest a significant proportion of middle Proterozoic crust beneath the Altai orogen. However, addition of juvenile material (arc/back-arc oceanic crust) during Palaeozoic times is also significant. Trace elements and isotopic data of sediments suggest their sources were immature. They represent mixtures between a Palaeozoic juvenile component and an evolved continental crust. The early Palaeozoic sediments show εNd(T) = −3.4 to −5.0, TDM = 1.5–1.8 Ga, and ISr = 0.710–0.712. They represent a passive margin setting, with a predominance of evolved crustal material in the source. The Devonian sequences, however, might have been deposited in a back-arc basin setting, produced by subduction of the Junggar oceanic crust along the Irtysh fault. A significant addition of arc material into the sedimentary basin is responsible for the highly variable εNd values (−6 to 0) and ISr (0.711–0.706). The Carboniferous rocks were also deposited in a back-arc basin setting but with predominantly arc material in the source as suggested by an abrupt increase in εNd(T) (+6 to +3) and decrease in ISr (0.7045–0.7051). Voluminous syn-orogenic granitoids have εNd(T) = +2.1 to −4.3, ISr = 0.705–0.714 and TDM = 0.7–1.6 Ga. They were not derived by melting of local metasedimentary rocks as suggested by previous workers, but by melting of a more juvenile source at depth. Post-orogenic granites have higher εNd(T) (∼ +4.4) than the syn-orogenic granitoids, indicating their derivation from a deeper crustal level where juvenile crust may predominate.
Intraplate thrust orogeny of the Altai Mountains revealed by deep seismic reflection

Abstract:The Altai orogen is a typical intracontinental orogen in Central Asia that experienced far-field deformation associated with Indian-Eurasian plate convergence. This region is characterized by uplift comparable to that of the Tianshan Mountains but has a distinct strain rate. Half of the Indo-Asia strain is accommodated by the Tianshan Mountains, whereas the Altai Mountains accommodates only 10%. To elucidate how the Altai Mountains produced such a large amount of uplift with only one-fifth of the strain rate of the Tianshan Mountains, we constructed a detailed crustal image of the Altai Mountains based on a new 166.8-km deep seismic reflection profile. The prestack migration images reveal an antiform within the Erqis crust, an ∼10 km Moho offset between the Altai arc and the East Junggar area, and a major south-dipping (30° dip) thrust in the lower crust beneath the Altai Mountains, which is connected to the Moho offset. The south-dipping thrust not only records the southward subduction of the Ob-Zaisan Ocean in the Paleozoic but also controlled the Altai deformation pattern in the Cenozoic with the Erqis antiform. The Erqis antiform prevented the extension of deformation to the Junggar crust. The south-dipping thrust in the lower crust of the Altai area caused extrusion of the lower crust, generating uplift at the surface, thickening of the crust, and steep (∼10 km) Moho deepening in the Altai Mountains. This process significantly widened the deformation zone of the Altai Mountains. These findings provide a new geodynamic model for describing how inherited crustal structure controls intraplate deformation without strong horizontal stress.
Accretionary Orogenesis of the Chinese Altai: Insights from Paleozoic Granitoids

Abstract:Zircon U-Pb dating and whole-rock major oxide, trace element and Nd-Sr isotope compositions have been determined for four representative granitic intrusions in the SW Chinese Altai, in order to understand the orogenesis and history of crustal growth in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). The Ashile and Halatas bodies are relatively small intrusions formed in the Late Carboniferous (318 +/- 6 Ma) and Permian (267 4 Ma), respectively. The larger Tarlang (TB) and Keketuohai Batholiths (KB) have magmatic ages of 359 to 412 Ma. The granitoids consist chiefly of tonalite, granodiorite and granite, and are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous in composition (ASI=0.8-1. 1). The Ashile Pluton is characterized by relatively high MgO (2.73-3.54 wt.%) and Sr (395-456 ppm) contents, with low K2ONa2O ratios (0.31-0.42) and mantle-like Nd-Sr isotopic compositions (epsilon Nd-T=+2.85 to+3.26; initial Sr-87/Sr-86=0.7047-0.705 1). It probably formed by fractional crystallization of a mantle-derived magma, with limited assimilation of old crustal material. The other intrusions have near-zero or negative epsilon Nd-T values (-0.67 to -4.41) and higher Sr isotopic compositions (initial Sr-87/Sr-86=0.7067-0.7092), indicating a mixture of juvenile and old components in their genesis. These intrusions are characterized by relatively low K, Rb, Cs contents and low Rb/Sr ratios (mostly <0.6), and generally exhibit moderate to high heavy rare earth element (HREE) concentrations (Yb-N=8-26) and weak HREE fractionation (Dy/Yb-N< 1.5), with or without negative europium anomalies (Eu/Eu* =0.5-1.0). These characteristics are consistent with an origin by dehydration melting of a homblende-bearing, mid-crustal source (above the garnet stability field) dominated by mafic to intermediate rocks. This suggests that the deep crust of the Chinese Altai may contain a considerable proportion of juvenile material. Mantle-derived magmatism, probably in an active extensional continental margin setting, played an important role in the formation of the Chinese Altai, acting not only as a heat source for crustal melting but as a source of juvenile components. The relatively small volumes and distinct geochemical compositions of the Ashile and Halatas Plutons may imply a substantial change in the geodynamic setting in the late Paleozoic. Seismic anisotropy in the central Tien Shan unveils rheology-controlled deformation during intracontinental orogenesis

Abstract:The initiation and evolution of compressional intracontinental orogens are favored by rheologically weak lithosphere underneath; however, how this weakened lithosphere responds to the regional stress regime remains vigorously debated. The Tien Shan mountains in central Asia provide the best example to illustrate the deep deformational responses to intracontinental orogenesis. We present new constraints on the nature of seismic anisotropy in the crust and upper mantle of the central Tien Shan through shear-wave splitting analyses. Our results reveal a sharp change in the orientations of crustal anisotropic fabrics on two sides of the mountains. The convergence-parallel fast orientations in the northern segment are closely related to the lower-crustal simple-shear deformation caused by the underthrusting of the Kazakh Shield, whereas the depth-independent orogen-parallel fast orientations in the southern segment suggest vertically coherent pure-shear thickening of the Tien Shan lithosphere in response to the northward indentation of the Tarim Basin. The thickened lithosphere has partly foundered into the deep mantle, contributing to the accelerated shortening deformation in the late Cenozoic. Our observations demonstrate the complex tectonic processes in the Tien Shan and suggest that the rheological properties of bounding blocks can play a significant role in shaping the lithospheric structures of intracontinental orogens.
The Eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt: Formation and Evolution

Abstract:The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is the largest accretionary orogen in the world with considerable Phanerozoic juvenile crustal growth. The eastern segment of the CAOB is occupied by NE China and its adjacent areas, which locates in a triangle area surrounded by Siberian Craton to the northwest, North China Craton (NCC) to the south and Pacific oceanic plate to the east. Therefore, the NE China is a key area to study the geological evolution of multiple tectonic systems and overprinting, which has become a hot research topic. In the past five decades, especially the last two decades, there have been many detailed geological investigations carried out and a lot of new data reported in NE China. A progress has been achieved in tectonic evolution, however, there are still many open questions and arguments dealing with the tectonic models, correlation of tectonic units, amalgamation of different blocks and their tectonic affinity. In this study, we did a detailed review of the tectonic evolution of NE China and regional comparison and correlation of the different tectonic units in the eastern segment of CAOB. We re-subdivided NE China into two old blocks of Erguna block (EB) and Jiamusi block (JB) with Precambrian basement and three accretionary terranes of Xing'an accretionary terrane (XAT), Songliao accretionary terrane (SAT) and Zhangguangcai accretionary terrane (ZGCAT), which are separated from each other by the Xinlin-Xiguitu suture (XXS), Hegenshan-Heihe suture (HHS), Longfengshan suture (LFS) and Mudanjiang-Yilan suture (MYS), respectively. The ZGCAT is dominantly composed of early Paleozoic magmatic arc materials and minor late Paleozoic igneous rocks with an old Yichun mini-block, while the SAT consists dominantly of the late Paleozoic magmatic rocks with two small old blocks of the Xilinhot and Longjiang mini-blocks. According to the tectonic correlation and comparation of different tectonic units, we established a new orocline tectonic model for the eastern CAOB: 1) the XAT and ZGCAT accreted to the southern (present position) margin of Ereendavaa-Erguna-Mamyn block (EEMB) and Bureya-Jiamusi-Khanka block (BJKB) with the closure of Xinlin-Xiguitu-Heilongjiang ocean during the early Paleozoic; 2) Subsequently, the SAT accreted to the southern (present position) margin of integrated XAT-ZGCAT terrane with the closure of Hegenshan-Nenjiang-Longfengshan ocean during the late Paleozoic. These initially W-E linear shaped accretionary orogenic belts were ultimately bent southward through Paleozoic time and constituted a huge Paleozoic orocline, NE China Orocline, which collided with NCC by a scissor-like style closure of Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO) from west to east along the Solonker-Xar Moron-Changchun-Yanji suture (SXCYS) during the late Permian-middle Triassic. The NE China Orocline, together with Tuva-Mongol Orocline and Kazakhstan Orocline in the western CAOB, constituted a huge multiple orocline tectonic system in the CAOB during the Paleozoic era. Our study will contribute to the understanding on tectonic evolutions of CAOB and the NE Asian, and suggests that the orocline should be a common tectonic model for accretionary orogeny.
Devonian subduction retreat recorded in the Chinese Altai Orogen: petro-structural and geochronological constraints from orogenic lower crust migmatite-granite complex

Abstract:Crustal extension due to the retreat of subduction system has been assigned as an important mechanism governing the Devonian tectonic evolution of the Chinese Altai Orogen in central Asia. While the extensional regime has been repeatedly inferred from petro-structural (petrographic and structural) records preserved in the orogenic upper crust sedimentary covers and orogenic middle crust schists, such records have rarely been documented in the deep crustal migmatitic and/or magmatic rocks. This gap is filled in this study by applying combined petro-structural analysis in conjunction with zircon and monazite U-Pb geochronology on representative orogenic lower crustal migmatite-granite complexes. These complexes are characterized by the development of a sub-horizontal foliation associated with extensional melt‐filled shear bands. The foliation commonly contains garnet-sillimanite±K-feldspar±cordierite-bearing metamorphic assemblages that are compatible with a low-pressure/high-temperature thermal regime. In addition, such mineral assemblages are usually found to replace pre-existing middle-pressure/middle-temperature Barrovian-type ones, reflecting a tectonic switch from thickening to extension. New monazite and zircon U-Pb age data, together with regional pre-existing ages, suggest that the sub-horizontal high-temperature foliation formed during a period of 420-390 Ma. Combined with previously published data, our data reinforce that a crustal-scale extensional tectonic regime developed in response to retreating of subduction system governed the geodynamic evolution of the Chinese Altai Orogen during Devonian times. This process led to regional anatexis of the pre-existing Ordovician accretionary wedge complex, facilitated the formation of stabilized and vertically stratified continental crust, and promoted the metallogenic evolution in the region during the Devonian.

Abstract:The Tianshan belt forms the southwestern part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, and its current topography is a product of punctuated Meso-Cenozoic intra-continental deformation that is still active today. This study provides new apatite fission track data on the Paleozoic rocks in and adjacent to the Chinese Central Tianshan, including two age-elevation profiles in the Alagou and Gangou areas. Inverse thermal history modelling reveals that the Central Tianshan experienced regional slow to moderate cooling during most of the Mesozoic, and that the present-day topography was mainly built by Cenozoic uplift and erosion. Geomorphological observation reveals several fragments of flat, low-relief surfaces within the Central Tianshan, which were likely to have formed in the Mesozoic as evidenced by thermal history modelling of the Alagou age-elevation profile. Furthermore, our data suggest that the Chinese Central Tianshan and its adjacent terranes did not undergo intensive relief building during its long-term Mesozoic evolution, as several pre-Mesozoic deep-rooted regional faults did not record evidence for a strong Mesozoic reactivation. Finally, differential exhumation in the Western Chinese Tianshan and Junggar is discussed, and we propose that the development of regional brittle faults could significantly influence the processes of intra-continental deformation.
Age And Origin Of The Takeshiken Postorogenic Alkali-Rich Intrusive Rocks In Southern Altai, Near The Mongolian Border In China And Its Implications For Continental Growth.

Abstract:The Takeshiken alkali-rich intrusion is a typical postorogenic pluton in Chinese Altay orogen. Zircon U-Pb (TIMS) dating yield a Pb-206/U-238 age of 286 +/- 1Ma (MSWD = 0.05), which is interpreted as its formation age. This pluton is composed of syenite with few quartz monzonite, quartz alkali-feldspar syenite and syenogranite. The rocks are enriched in K, Na, Al, REE and LILE (Rb, Th, Ba) with negative anomaly in Nb, Sr, Ti and P, different from the alkaline ( A-type) granites in the same area. Their I-Sr values are between 0.7038 similar to 0. 7040 1 epsilon(Nd) (t) values between + 6.2 similar to + 6.3, and T-DM between 542 similar to 546 Ma, which are similar to those of high (positive) epsilon(Nd) (t) value granites from the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Importantly, their epsilon(Nd) (t) values are higher than those of synorogenic granites, and also slightly higher than those of coeval I-A type post-orogenic granites in the central Allay. Integration analysis of field occurrence, geochronology, geochemistry and regional geology suggest that this pluton is post orogenic, and as probably related to the melting of lower crust due to the underplating of mafic magma derived from DM with enriched in LILE. This suggests that new juvenile mantle-derived materials, besides subducted juvenile ocean crust or are rocks, probably entered into continental crust. Accordingly, this study provides evidences for vertical continental crustal growth in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. In addition, our new data indicate that the alkali rock zone in the southern Mongolia and NE China extends to Allay orogen, constituting a large scale alkali rock zone in the Central Asia.

Abstract:The East Asian continent records a complex geologic and tectonic history that involved the amalgamation of several small- to medium-sized blocks from Laurasia or Gondwana. The China continent is located at the core of East Asia, and is the key to understanding the formation and evolution of the East Asian Continent. The most important tectonic framework controlling the formation and evolution of the main China continent is the EW-trending Central China Orogenic Belt and the NS-trending Helan-Chuandian Orogenic Belt, defined as the ‘Cross Orogenic Belts’. The former includes, from east to west, the Qinling, Qilian and Kunlun Orogens, which were formed by the subduction-collision between the southern and northern continental blocks during the Early Paleozoic–Triassic and constitute the mainland of China Continent. Following this, the Central China Orogenic Belt was overprinted by the Mesozoic to Cenozoic intracontinental orogenic events, resulting in a prominent north and south division of geology, geography, ecology, environment, economy and culture. The latter inherited the Paleoproterozoic and the Neoproterozoic plate tectonic frameworks in its north and south, respectively, and was gradually transformed into the continental margin of the Paleo-Asian Ocean or Paleo-Tethys tectonic domain. Associated with the Neo-Tethys tectonic evolution, it evolved into the eastern boundary of the uplift and expansion of the Tibetan Plateau, controlling the Late Mesozoic–Cenozoic reverse evolution of the western and eastern China Continent. The Cross Orogenic Belts experienced multiple phases of uplift, which were dominated by deep geological process together with surface geomorphologic influence. The uplift of the Cross Orogenic Belts resulted in differential evolution of the climate, environment, as well as economy and culture in four quadrants of the China Continent.

Abstract:The tectonic affinity and structural evolution of the South Tianshan are key issues to understand the Paleozoic accretionary or collisional orogenesis in the southwestern Central Asian Orogenic Belt, but remain controversial. Geological and structural investigations on the Early Paleozoic low-grade metamorphic volcanic-sedimentary sequences around the Bayinbuluk basin demonstrate that they were prevalently reworked by north-vergent ductile deformation and overlain unconformably by Devonian to Carboniferous carbonates. Zircon U–Pb dating indicates that the volcanic rocks erupted during the Middle Ordovician to Early Devonian time (460–410 Ma), and contain Neoarchean to Neoproterozoic zircon xenocrysts (~2.75 Ga, ~2.46 Ga, ~1.60 Ga, 997–963 Ma and 827 Ma). Their whole-rock elemental, Sr–Nd isotopic (εNd(t) = −5.0 to +3.6) and zircon Lu–Hf isotopic (εHf(t) = −13.5 to +11.6) features resemble those of Andean-type continental arc volcanic rocks. The coexisting tuffaceous sedimentary rocks indicate a depositional environment amidst a continental volcanic arc at 421 to 404 Ma. The newly obtained and available geochronological, geochemical and structural data suggest that: (1) a wide active continental margin covering the South and Central Tianshan and northern Tarim was formed due to Early-Mid Paleozoic southward subduction of the Paleo-Tianshan Ocean beneath the Tarim Craton; and (2) a Mid-Paleozoic transition from advancing to retreating accretionary orogeny was followed by opening of the South Tianshan back-arc basins and break-up of the northern Tarim continental margin. The South Tianshan was subsequently subjected to regional deformation during the successive diachronous closure of the major and back-arc oceanic basins, and locally reworked by the ductile strike-slip faulting (307–255 Ma).
Tectonic Anatomy Reveals the Chinese Altai‐Kuerti‐Dulate Arc Amalgamation in the Southern Altaids

Abstract:The Erqis tectonic belt, situated at the junction of the Chinese Altai‐East Junggar, originated through the subduction of the Ob‐Zaisan Ocean, playing a pivotal role in unraveling the tectonic evolution of the southern Altaids. Tectonic and provenance analyses discern three distinct arcs: the Chinese Altai in the north exhibits a protracted history from the late Cambrian to early Permian with a slender accretionary complex (AC) termed the Supute AC; the Kuerti intra‐oceanic arc in the middle emerged during the Silurian to Devonian coevally with a minor AC known as the Tesibahan AC; and the Dulate arc in the south predominantly evolved from the Middle Devonian to Permian, giving rise to the Fuyun AC that independently developed on its northern margin at least until ∼273 Ma. Our findings indicate the existence of multiple arcs within the Ob‐Zaisan Ocean, forming an archipelago paleogeography in the Paleo‐Asian Ocean. Provenance studies lead us to propose that cryptic sutures demarcating the Chinese Altai, Kuerti, and Dulate lie approximately along the Kuerti and Tesibahan faults, respectively, and that the oceanic branches between these arcs subducted northward beneath the Chinese Altai and Kuerti arcs and southward beneath the Dulate arc. Additionally, our work demonstrates the closure of the Ob‐Zaisan Ocean most probably postdates ∼273 Ma. Combining our data with previous research, we present a novel tectonic evolution model, elucidating several arc amalgamations with multiple subduction polarities between Chinese Altai and East Junggar throughout the late Cambrian to Permian.

Abstract:The Chinese Tianshan belt is a major part of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt, extending westward to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Its Paleozoic tectonic evolution, crucial for understanding the amalgamation of Central Asia, comprises two stages of subduction-collision. The first collisional stage built the Eo-Tianshan Mountains, before a Visean unconformity, in which all structures are verging north. It implied a southward subduction of the Central Tianshan Ocean beneath the Tarim active margin, that induced the Ordovician-Early Devonian Central Tianshan arc, to the south of which the South Tianshan back-arc basin opened. During the Late Devonian, the closure of this ocean led to a collision between Central Tianshan arc and the Kazakhstan-Yili-North Tianshan Block, and subsequently closure of the South Tianhan back-arc basin, producing two suture zones, namely the Central Tianshan and South Tianshan suture zones where ophiolitic mélanges and HP metamorphic rocks were emplaced northward. The second stage included the Late Devonian-Carboniferous southward subduction of North Tianshan Ocean beneath the Eo-Tianshan active margin, underlined by the Yili-North Tianshan arc, leading to the collision between the Kazakhstan-Yili-NTS plate and an inferred Junggar Block at Late Carboniferous-Early Permian time. The North Tianshan Suture Zone underlines likely the last oceanic closure of Central Asia Orogenic Belt; all the oceanic domains were consumed before the Middle Permian. The amalgamated units were affected by a Permian major wrenching, dextral in the Tianshan. The correlation with the Kazakh and Kyrgyz Tianshan is clarified. The Kyrgyz South Tianshan is equivalent to the whole part of Chinese Tianshan (CTS and STS) located to the south of Narat Fault and Main Tianshan Shear Zone; the so-called Middle Tianshan thins out toward the east. The South Tianshan Suture of Kyrgyzstan correlates with the Central Tianshan Suture of Chinese Tianshan. The evolution of this southern domain remains similar from east (Gangou area) to west until the Talas-Ferghana Fault, which reflects the convergence history between the Kazakhstan and Tarim blocks.

Abstract:Chinese East Tianshan is a key area for understanding the Paleozoic accretion of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. A first accretion-collision stage, before the Visean, developed the Eo-Tianshan range, which exhibits north-verging structures. The geodynamic evolution included: i) Ordovician-Early Devonian southward subduction of a Central Tianshan ocean beneath a Central Tianshan arc; ii) Devonian oceanic closure and collision between Central Tianshan arc and Yili-North Tianshan block, along the Central Tianshan Suture Zone; iii) Late Devonian-earliest Carboniferous closure of a South Tianshan back-arc basin, and subsequent Central Tianshan-Tarim active margin collision along the South Tianshan Suture Zone. A second stage involved: i) Late Devonian-Carboniferous southward subduction of North Tianshan ocean beneath the Eo-Tianshan active margin (Yili-North Tianshan arc); ii) Late Carboniferous-Early Permian North Tianshan-Junggar collision. The Harlike range, unit of Mongolian Fold Belt, collided with Junggar at Mid- Carboniferous, ending a north-dipping subduction. The last CAOB oceanic suture is likely the North Tianshan Suture Zone, between Yili-North Tianshan and Junggar. During the Permian, all the already welded units suffered from a major wrenching, dextral in Tianshan, sinistral in Mongolian Fold Belt, due to opposite motion of Siberia and Tarim.
