Abstract:The development of solvent-free, metal-free, recyclable organic catalysts is required for the current chemical fixation of carbon dioxide converted into cyclic carbonates. With the goal of reducing the cost, time, and energy consumption for the coupling reaction of CO(2)and epoxides, a series of highly active heterogeneous catalysts, based on a thiourea and quaternary ammonium salt system, are synthesized by using a thiol-ene click reaction under ultraviolet light. Benefitting from synergistic interactions of the electrophilic center (thiourea) and the nucleophilic site (ammonium bromide), the catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic selectivity (99 %) for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with a diverse range of epoxides under mild conditions (1.2 MPa, 100 degrees C). Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recycled by facile filtration and reused for 5 times without noticeable loss of activity and selectivity. This work provides a potential heterogeneous catalyst for the conversion of carbon dioxide into high value-added chemicals with the combined advantages of low cost, easy recovery, and satisfactory catalytic properties.

Abstract:The kinetic resolution of racemic terminal epoxides with CO2 as reagent via enantioselective coupling represents an attractive method for affording enantiopure epoxides and optically active organic carbonates. A multichiral cobalt(III) complex in conjunction with an ammonium salt is an efficient catalyst system for the asymmetric coupling reaction of CO2 and racemic epoxides, and up to 97.1% ee for cyclic carbonate product and the highest k(rel) (kinetic resolution coefficient) to date of 75.8 was obtained. The variation of nucleophilic co-catalyst and its relative loading dramatically changes the product selectivity and enantioselectivity. Both the anion and cation of ammonium salts have significant effects on the catalytic kinetic resolution process. An ammonium salt consisting of an anion with poor leaving ability and a bulky cation benefits for improving the enantioselectivity. The excess co-catalyst loading favors selective production of cyclic carbonate via the intramolecular cyclic elimination of the formed linear carbonate. A higher k(rel) was observed in the excess co-catalyst loading, in comparison with one equivalent co-catalyst loading, predominantly resulting in polymer formation at the same temperature. It was also found that the excess co-catalyst loading led to significant increases in the regioselective ring-opening at the methylene carbon of various terminal epoxides, including styrene oxide with an electron-withdrawing group. The present study also offers a detailed mechanistic explanation of the role of the nucleophilic co-catalyst in the asymmetric coupling of racemic epoxides with CO2 using multichiral Co(III) complexes.

Abstract:A very convenient one-step synthesis to cross-linked polymeric nanoparticles by conventional radical copolymerization without the addition of stabilizers or surfactants was explored. Moreover, these nanoparticles exhibited excellent stability, activity and selectivity in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 to epoxides and could be separated from the products easily and reused.

Abstract:Isomerization of epoxides into versatile allylic alcohols is an atom-economical synthetic method to afford vicinal bifunctional groups. Comprehensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to elucidate the complex mechanism of a bimetallic Ti/Co-catalyzed selective isomerization of epoxides to allyl alcohols by examining several possible pathways. Our results suggest a possible mechanism involving (1) radical-type epoxide ring opening catalyzed by Cp2Ti(III)Cl leading to a Ti(IV)-bound β-alkyl radical, (2) hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) catalyzed by the Co(II) catalyst to form the Ti(IV)-enolate and Co(III)-H intermediate, (3) protonation to give the alcohols, and (4) proton abstraction to form the Co(I) species followed by electron transfer to regenerate the active Co(II) and Ti(III) species. Moreover, bimetallic catalysis and two-state reactivity enable the key rate-determining HAT step. Furthermore, a subtle balance between dispersion-driven bimetallic processes and entropy-driven monometallic processes determines the most favorable pathway, among which the monometallic process is energetically more favorable in all steps except the vital hydrogen-atom transfer step. Our study should provide an in-depth mechanistic understanding of bimetallic catalysis.

Abstract:Achieving simultaneously high selectivity and high rate in the coupling reaction of CO2 with poorly reacting oxetanes remains a major challenge. Here, the selective and nearly quantitative conversion of the coupling reaction of oxetanes with CO(2)into six-membered cyclic organic carbonates (COCs) is described, when a binary metal-free system composed of commercially available alkyl borane and onium iodide salts is used under 10 bar CO2 pressure between 90 and 110 degrees C. Kinetic investigations provide quantitatively the enthalpy and entropy of activation [Delta H double dagger = 6.7 +/- 1.2 kcal/ mol and Delta S double dagger = -57 +/- 4 cal/(mol.K)] of the back-biting, cyclic formation reaction. In addition to forming borate complexes with the anions responsible for the CO2/oxetane coupling reaction, these alkyl boranes activate the cyclic ethers as unambiguously confirmed by density functional theory studies. Upon selecting onium salts other than iodide-based ones, in particular those with poor leaving ability, the process is driven toward chain growth and the formation of linear polycarbonates. This metal-free system also exhibits both versatility and an activity comparable to that of metal catalysts (turnover frequency values of 14-124 h(-1)) for the synthesis of various five-membered COCs from epoxides and CO2.

Abstract:An efficient and versatile method for the enantioselective epoxidation of both tertiary allylic and homoallylic alcohols catalyzed by Hf(IV)-bishydroxamic acid (BHA) complexes is described. Asymmetric epoxidation, kinetic resolution, and desymmetrization have been developed, demonstrating the flexible nature of the Hf(IV)-BHA system. This is the first report in which these substrates were obtained with enantioselectivities of up to 99%.

Abstract:An efficient palladium(0)-catalyzed, Cu(I)-mediated synthetic route to trisubstituted olefins and conjugate dienes has been developed via oxo directing Liebeskind-Srogl cross-coupling reactions of gem-dihaloolefin-type alpha-oxo ketene dithioacetals with aryl and alkenylboronic acids. The synthetic protocol has demonstrated rare examples of transition-metal-promoted transformations of ketene dithioacetals, providing a novel route to highly functionalized conjugate dienes.

Abstract:The design of molecular scaffolds bearing multiple functional groups for the activation and ring‐opening of epoxides is a crucial challenge for the synthesis of efficient homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 to epoxides. Traditional approaches to prepare such multifunctional catalysts often imply multistep synthetic procedures and expensive building blocks. In this work we show that bifunctional catalysts for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides bearing a Lewis acid metal and a quaternary ammonium halide group can be prepared in just two steps starting from an opportunely designed epoxide precursor by using inexpensive substrates. Such a readily accessible catalyst was applied for the cycloaddition of CO2 to a series of epoxides under atmospheric conditions generally leading to quantitative substrate conversion and high carbonate selectivities. Importantly, we also show that the epoxide‐driven concept developed for the preparation of the molecular catalyst, could be applied to prepare recyclable heterogeneous systems for the target cycloaddition reaction.

Abstract:We report a stable and porous 3D covalent-porphyrinic framework CPF-2, which is easily post-metalated with different metal ions to tune the catalytic properties. The cobalt(II) metalated material Co-CPF-2 exhibits high efficiency in heterogeneous catalysis of the aerobic epoxidation of olefins under mild conditions, in which >99% conversion, 93% epoxide selectivity, 29,215 turnover number (TON) and 3434h−1 turnover frequency (TOF) have been realized for the aerobic epoxidation of styrene.

Abstract:Based on the important application of epoxides, it is an attractive and urgent topic to develop sustainable and more efficient preparation protocols for epoxides. Herein, we report an exploration of styrene epoxidation method with CoO X /CeO 2 bimetallic oxides as a heterogenous catalyst. The catalyst was prepared by the pyrolysis of a MOF precursor and characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, XRD, XPS, ICP-OES and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that the presence of abundant oxygen vacancies on the surface of CoO X /CeO 2 , and the synergy of CoO X /CeO 2 bimetallic oxides significantly contribute to the excellent catalytic performance. The catalytic oxidation protocol showed high styrene conversion and selectivity, and the range of suitable substrates was also explored. In addition, CoO X /CeO 2 catalyst showed good reusability and stability after recycling for six times without significant loss of catalytic activity. Designed control experiments revealed that the reaction proceeds via a co-oxidation mechanism and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved.

Abstract:The chiral SalenCo(III)OAc-catalyzed hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) of racemic terminal epoxides to afford both enantioenriched epoxides and diols presents one of the most important achievements in asymmetric synthesis chemistry. Previous studies mainly focused on the development of highly efficient catalysts, while rare reports concerned the mechanistic understanding of metal valence change, associated with the formation of inactive Co(II)-Salen complex. Herein, we report the mechanistic aspects of catalyst deactivation regarding the transformation of Co(III) to Co(II) derivative in the HKR of racemic epoxides catalyzed by SalenCo(III)OAc complexes with an appended 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene on the ligand framework by means of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Continuous determination of transient cationic species in ESI-MS positive mode in conjunction with UV-vis spectroscopic studies at various time points provides evidence that a certain amount of SalenCo(III)OAc molecules were reduced to the corresponding Co(II) derivatives in the HKR of racemic propylene oxide or styrene oxide. To be accompanied by the reduction of Co(III) to Co(II), the resultant diols were oxidized to α-hydroxy ketones. These analyses along with some control experiments gave a mechanistic understanding of catalyst deactivation of SalenCo(III)OAc-catalyzed HKR of racemic epoxides regarding an unveiled redox reaction between Co(III)-Salen and diol, the hydrolyzed product.

Abstract:Catalytic stereoselective desymmetrization of prochiral compounds to valuable chiral molecules is of interest in asymmetric synthesis. Here, we report the development of an efficient biocatalytic desymmetrization strategy for the stereodivergent synthesis of various chiral epoxides and oxazolidinones by the identification and engineering of halohydrin dehalogenases. The use of stereocomplementary halohydrin dehalogenases for the desymmetrization of 2-substituted-1,3-dichloro-2-propanols generates chiral epoxides in up to 95% yield and 99% ee by a single-step dehalogenation reaction, as well as chiral oxazolidinones in up to 88% yield and >99% ee via a dehalogenation and cyanate-mediated epoxide ring-opening cascade reaction. We also propose a probable mechanism for stereoselectivity control in the halohydrin dehalogenase-catalyzed desymmetrization reaction.

Abstract:A new chrial organosulfide was synthesized through an unexpected Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement. This organosulfide could catalyze the epoxidation reaction of various aromatic aldehydes smoothly with benzyl bromide to give trans-diaryl epoxide in satisfactory yields (60-84%) with excellent diastereoselectivities (trans:cis = 95:5-100:0) and good to excellent enantioselectivities (86-96% ee).

Abstract:A highly enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed desymmetrizing reductive cyclization of alkynyl cyclodiketones has been developed. Under mild reaction conditions by employing HBpin as reducing agent and ferrocene-based PHOX as chiral ligand, a series of polycyclic tertiary allylic alcohols bearing contiguous quaternary stereocenters are achieved in moderate to excellent yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99%). Broad substrate scope and high functional group compatibility are observed in this reaction. A CoH-catalyzed pathway involving alkyne hydrocobaltation followed by nucleophilic addition to C=O bond is proposed. Synthetic transformations of the product are conducted to demonstrate the practical utilities of this reaction.

Abstract:A one-step, two-component visible light-mediated CoCl2·6H2O-catalyzed oxidative acylation of alkenes by aldehydes to synthesize α,β-epoxy ketone has been achieved in water at room temperature. The photocatalytic activity of Co(II) presented a remarkable achievement for synthesis of α,β-epoxy ketones from aldehydes and olefins, with a wide substrate compatibility including aromatic, heteroaromatic and aliphatic aldehydes, styrenes with both electron-donating and withdrawing groups, α-substituted styrenes, stilbene, acrylates, and even the challenging unactivated aliphatic alkenes. Mechanistic studies including radical trapping experiments, intermediate detection by GCMS, Hammett analysis, and DFT studies unveil the nature of the photocatalytic pathway.

Abstract:Despite tremendous efforts aimed at devising methods for stereoselective alkene synthesis, critical challenges are yet to be addressed. Direct access to a diverse range of 1-aryl(boryl)-1-methyl-functionalized tri- and tetrasubstituted trans alkenes, entities that are prevalent in many important molecules, through a catalytic manifold from readily available α-olefin substrates remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that catalytic amounts of a non-precious N-heterocyclic carbene–Ni(I) complex in conjunction with a sterically bulky base promote site- and trans-selective union of monosubstituted olefins with a wide array of electrophilic reagents to deliver tri- and tetrasubstituted alkenes in up to 92% yield and >98% regio- and stereoselectivity. The protocol is amenable to the preparation of carbon- and heteroatom-substituted C=C bonds, providing distinct advantages over existing transformations. Utility is highlighted through concise stereoselective synthesis of biologically active compounds.

Abstract:In metal hydride-catalyzed alkene hydrofunctionalization reactions via hydrogen atom transfer, simple carbonyl groups have been well-recognized as good somophiles at the carbon for C-C bond formation. Here we report an alternative pathway exploring the carbonyl as an O-nucleophile to make new C-O bonds during the CoH-catalyzed oxidative cyclization of alkenyl aldehydes. This reaction provides a rapid, mild, modular, and stereoselective (up to >20:1) entry to saturated O-heterocycles via nucleophilic trapping of an in situ-formed oxocarbenium intermediate. The key to overriding the carbonyl's innate somophilicity was found to be promoting the formation of organocobalt species and suppressing the radical exchange.
