Abstract:We demonstrate that optical microfibers integrated in Yb-doped fiber lasers boost broadband noise-like pulse (NLP) generation via dispersion and nonlinearity management, with an optical spectrum spanning from below 1000 nm to beyond 1600 nm when the diameter of the optical microfiber is 1.2 µm. Numerical simulations show that dispersion and nonlinearity management provided by the optical microfiber is responsible for the broadband NLP generation. Furthermore, it is shown experimentally that dispersion and nonlinearity management via optical microfibers can also bring the highest optical rogue waves along with the broadest optical spectrum.

Abstract:Nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) is among the most advanced techniques for obtaining ultrashort pulses with excellent optical performance. However, it is challenging to design environmentally stable NPE fiber oscillators using only polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers. Here, we use the same PM fiber and non-reciprocal phase shifter to design two different devices, which are capable of acting as effective NPE saturable absorbers (SAs) in two all-PM linear cavity fiber lasers. These two laser setups differ in the position of the non-reciprocal phase shifter, the presence of which is crucial for the proposed fiber lasers to reduce their mode-locking thresholds and achieve high repetition rates above 100 MHz. The mode-locking principle and pulse evolution in the laser cavity are investigated theoretically. The first all-PM fiber oscillator emits sub-200 fs stretched pulses with low peak powers. The second oscillator, with a simpler architecture, directly delivers stretched pulses with high peak powers, the spectral bandwidth greater than 30 nm, and the pulse duration less than 90 fs. To the best of our knowledge, 79 fs achieved in this design is the shortest pulse duration provided by PM fiber lasers using NPE mode-lockers.

Abstract:We demonstrated the first 1.2 GHz nonlinear polarization rotation stretched-pulse mode-locked Yb laser with a compact design and innovative components. With a compact Faraday rotation angle has been used in NPR mode-locked lasers, and we find that incomplete isolation of backward light does not hinder self-starting. This laser directly outputs sub-40 fs pulses with a spectral bandwidth exceeding 70 nm, achieving over 1 W of average output power. The laser serves as a seed source, generating a supercontinuum over one octave-spanning range without external amplification or compression.

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond nonlinear amplification fiber laser system using a vector-dispersion compressor, which consists of a transmission grating pair and multipass cell based Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors. The mirror is designed with nearly zero group-delay dispersion and large negative third-order dispersion. As a result, the third-order dispersion of the compressor can be adjusted independently to compensate the nonlinear phase shift of amplified pulses to reduce the pulse pedestal. With this scheme, the system outputs 44 fs laser pulses with little wing at 26.6W output average power and 531 nJ pulse energy, corresponding to 10.8MW peak power. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Ultrafast fiber sources having short pulses, broad bandwidth, high energy, and low amplitude fluctuations have widespread applications. Stretched-pulse fiber lasers, incorporating segments of normal and anomalous dispersion fibers, are a preferred means to generate such pulses. We realize a stretched-pulse fiber laser based on a nanotube saturable absorber, with 113 fs pulses, 33.5 nm spectral width and ˜0.07% amplitude fluctuation, outperforming current nanotube-based designs.

Abstract:We demonstrate an L-band all-fibre erbium-doped laser mode locked by nonlinear polarisation rotation and working in the stretched-pulse regime. The use of a single segment of gain fibre with appropriate length and dispersion and a Brewster fibre grating optimised for the L band as an in-fibre polariser enables the generation of pulses at 1.59-μm central wavelength, which can be linearly compressed to 64-fs duration. Numerical simulations of the laser model support our experimental findings. Our laser design gives a route towards low-cost and low-complexity fibre-integrated laser sources for applications requiring L-band ultrashort pulses.

Abstract:We report on a long-term stable 50 fs pulse generation directly from a nonlinear amplified loop mirror based fiber oscillator. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components can generate pulses with 0.16 nJ pulse energy and 50 fs pulse width under 85 MHz repetition rate. The 0-45 degrees C high-low temperature test, together with the 15 h output power test, shows the excellent stability of the few-cycle pulsed laser.

Abstract:Using PbS quantum dots (QDs) as a saturable absorber (SA), ultrafast stretched-pulse are generated in a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser at near-zero dispersion. Owing to dispersion management, the laser can generate pulses with a duration of 550 fs and a bandwidth of 8.8 nm at a repetition rate of 9.18 MHz. The modulation depth of the SA prepared by dropping PbS QDs on the end face of the optical fiber connector can reach 43.87%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on a stretched-pulse fiber laser based on PbS QDs mode locker. Numerical simulations are performed to investigate cavity dynamics, and obtained results are consistent with experiment.

Abstract:We report on a robust, erbium-doped ultrafast fiber laser mode-locked by an artificial saturable absorber (SA) based on nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). Unlike previous NPE fiber lasers, our cavity employs all polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber so that the laser is insensitive against environmental fluctuations. By incorporating a phase shifter in the NPE artificial SA, the oscillator possesses self-starting mode-locking ability. However, it is difficult to start pulsed operation without such a phase shifter. The simple and novel fiber laser scheme utilizing above mentioned design can directly generate 0.11 nJ, 1.20 ps ultrashort pulses at a repetition rate of 115 MHz, which is the highest repetition rate in this type of fiber lasers. We believe that this fiber oscillator offers a promising source for high repetition rate applications under less stable conditions.

Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. The thermally induced dephasing effect is found to be the key issue for improving second-harmonic efficiency. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:<p>We report on a novel architecture for robust all polarization-maintaining (PM) femtosecond linear fiber lasers mode-locked by nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) with phase bias. Due to a non-reciprocal phase shift, the reflectivity of the artificial saturable absorber has a steeper slope around zero difference in nonlinear phase shift between the orthogonal polarizations, offering the possibility to reduce mode locking threshold and reach high repetition rates. We demonstrate an environmentally stable self-starting 105 MHz repetition rate linear Yb:fiber laser based on NPE with phase bias mode locking. The laser delivers an average power of 26.3 mW and 332 fs pulse which is further compressed to 91 fs at a pump power of 425 mW. Our work provides a novel promising compact and robust femtosecond laser for ultrafast photonic applications.</p>

Recently, this method has been improved using filter-driven DFWM, which exploits both the filtering and nonlinear features of silica microring resonators. However, the fabrication complexity and coupling loss between waveguides and fibers are problematic. We demonstrate a tens- to hundreds- of gigahertz-stable pulsed all-fiber laser based on a hybrid plasmonic microfiber knot resonator device. Unlike previously reported pulse generation mechanisms, the operation utilizes the nonlinear-polarization-rotation (NPR) effect introduced by the polarization-dependent feature of the device to increase intracavity power for boosting DFWM mode-locking, which we term NPR-stimulated DFWM. The easily fabricated versatile device acts as a polarizer, comb filter, and nonlinear component simultaneously, thereby introducing an application of microfiber resonator devices in ultrafast and nonlinear photonics. We believe that our work underpins a significant improvement in achieving practical low-cost ultrafast light sources.

Abstract:We demonstrated a compact broad spectrum ultrashort fiber laser system that employed a similariton laser as a seed and fiber-optic nonlinearities in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier to broaden the optical spectrum. The system generated a stable 59 fs ultrashort pulse with a spectral bandwidth beyond 550 nm (i.e. 1490-2030 nm). The mode-locked oscillator produced an 85.9 fs similariton pulse at the wavelength of 1553 nm. The maximum average output power of the laser system was 251 mW. This new type of standard single-mode fiber-format energetic ultrashort system was suitable as a source for biological tissue imaging, broad-band spectroscopy, and optical frequency combs.

Abstract:We report on an environmentally stable mode-locked all polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) at a ultralow repetition rate. Experimentally, using different cavity lengths we have achieved stable mode-locking at different repetition rates. By carefully adjusting the length of the total fiber of NALM, we achieve stable broadband pulse trains with a repetition rate as low as 140 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 27 mu J and compressed down to 1.16 ps. The laser system has potential application for industrial application.

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the generation of broad bandwidth mode-locked dual-wavelength pulses with diverse-pattern from a dispersion managed erbium-doped (Er-doped) fiber laser. The two-peak gain profile of the Er-doped fiber is shown to have advantages in achieving broadband dual-wavelength pulses compared to a comb filter in our cavity. Our obtained bandwidths of 24 nm and 11.5 nm represent the broadest achieved in an Er-doped dual-wavelength fiber laser to date. In addition, the weak third-order dispersion (TOD) of the fibers facilitates two dispersion-pattern pulses (one stretched pulse and one dissipative soliton) generated in the near zero dispersion regime. Our results provide a convenient, effective way to obtain such sources for potential applications, such as in dual-comb metrology and multicolor pulses in nonlinear microscopy.
