Abstract:Elderly loss of the ability to maintain postural control during manual manipulation is a risk factor for falls. The straightness of the trunk trajectory (STT) can be used to assess trunk motion during a precision fitting task. The ability to maintain postural control can also be evaluated by the temporal coordination between the wrist movements and either trunk or center of pressure (CoP) during the same task. Tai Chi exercise (TC) has been reported to improve postural control. PURPOSE: To examine posture control during precision fitting tasks among (TC), brisk walk (BW), and sedentary (SE) groups. METHODS: 36 healthy adults aged 65 ~ 75 were recruited (12 in each group) for the project. Participants were required to fit a 90 × 90 mm block into either a large (130 × 130 mm) or small (100 × 100 mm) opening from two different distances (1 or 1.3 arm length, close and far) in a standing position. Kinematic and center of pressure data were collected. Trunk straightness was calculated as the total path distance traveled by the center of mass of the trunk divided by the distance between its starting and ending points during the fitting task. The temporal coordination was measured by the latencies between when the wrist, trunk (W-T), and CoP (W-CoP) reach their maximum speed during precision fitting. The two-factor (groups × conditions) repeated measures ANOVA was used to examine the results. Alpha level was set at .05. RESULTS: A significant (p = .018) interaction was observed for W-T. W-T magnitude W-T for the BW and SE groups increase from close-large to close-small (BW: 11.0 ± 191.0 vs. -227.5 ± 476.5 ms; SE: -14.2 ± 113.7 vs. -183.5 ± 338.8 ms) and far-large to far-small (BW: -405.4 ± 173.0 vs. -422.3 ± 155.5 ms; SE: -413.2 ± 262.6 vs. -522.5 ± 305.9 ms), but TC group showed decreasing the magnitude at the meantime (-131.0 ± 129.2 vs. -75.0 ± 143.3; -236.0 ± 153.0 vs. -208.2 ± 173.2 ms). Furthermore, the magnitude of the W-CoP of the far conditions was greater than that of the close condition (p < .001). The magnitude of the STT increased from the far (large to small) to close (large to small) (p = .01). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the TC group, W-T coordination of the BW and SE groups were sensitive to the opening size and reaching distance of the task. TC could be an effective intervention for maintaining postural stability during a precision fitting task among the elderly.
