Abstract:Dynamics of flowing air in partially water‐saturated, porous geological formations are governed by a wide range of forces and parameters. These dynamics are reviewed in the contexts of flow patterns that arise and the corresponding applicability of diverse modeling approaches. The importance of reliable gas‐liquid flow models draws from the key role gases play in earth systems, and the various engineering practices involving air injection into geological formations. Here, we focus on air flow in water‐wet porous media. We survey the factors that affect flow patterns and phase configurations, and the measures that quantify them. For single‐phase flow in saturated media (i.e., air flow in dry media or water flow in water‐saturated media), the continuum approach (Darcy's law) is generally applicable and offers a good interpretive tool. However, the coupled two‐phase flow continuum approach appears appropriate only for phase‐saturation degrees that allow both phases to be continuous in the flow domain. Furthermore, air flow in wet media is highly unstable. As a result, air commonly flows in preferential pathways or in the form of bubbles and ganglia, which are not amenable to continuum modeling. On the other hand, pore‐scale models that account for the complex geometries and interfaces between the fluids and the media require extreme computational efforts, and generally inaccessible details on medium characteristics. Other stochastically‐based representations, such as percolation theory, have value in the conceptualization of complex flow problems but demonstrate limited success in interpreting phase configurations, saturation degrees, and relative permeabilities.

Abstract:Abstract We describe the most important developments in the application of three theoretical tools to modeling of the morphology of porous media and flow and transport processes in them. One tool is percolation theory. Although it was over 40 years ago that the possibility of using percolation theory to describe flow and transport processes in porous media was first raised, new models and concepts, as well as new variants of the original percolation model are still being developed for various applications to flow phenomena in porous media. The other two approaches, closely related to percolation theory, are the critical‐path analysis, which is applicable when porous media are highly heterogeneous, and the effective medium approximation— poor man's percolation —that provide a simple and, under certain conditions, quantitatively correct description of transport in porous media in which percolation‐type disorder is relevant. Applications to topics in geosciences include predictions of the hydraulic conductivity and air permeability, solute and gas diffusion that are particularly important in ecohydrological applications and land‐surface interactions, and multiphase flow in porous media, as well as non‐Gaussian solute transport, and flow morphologies associated with imbibition into unsaturated fractures. We describe new applications of percolation theory of solute transport to chemical weathering and soil formation, geomorphology, and elemental cycling through the terrestrial Earth surface. Wherever quantitatively accurate predictions of such quantities are relevant, so are the techniques presented here. Whenever possible, the theoretical predictions are compared with the relevant experimental data. In practically all the cases, the agreement between the theoretical predictions and the data is excellent. Also discussed are possible future directions in the application of such concepts to many other phenomena in geosciences. Plain Language Summary Many processes in geologic media, such as how fast water and solutes, including nutrients, can move around, are affected by the degree of inhomogeneity of the medium, and how the best flow paths are connected through such media. We show how modern theories of the connections of such flow paths can help understand a wide range of behavior that is otherwise difficult to understand, from water imbibition into unsaturated fractures to chemical weathering and soil formation. The timescales of processes considered can extend from seconds to millions of years.Key Points Percolation theory provides a framework for calculating flow and transport properties of porous media The direct predictions of percolation theory for such quantities are typically more accurate than theories extant The implications of this improvement include better understanding of such processes as the scaling of chemical weathering or soil formation

Convective mixing in porous media: A review of Darcy, pore-scale and Hele-Shaw studies

Abstract:Convection-driven porous media flows are common in industrial processes and in nature. The multiscale and multiphase character of these systems and the inherent non-linear flow dynamics make convection in porous media a complex phenomenon. As a result, a combination of different complementary approaches, namely theory, simulations and experiments, have been deployed to elucidate the intricate physics of convection in porous media. In this work, we review recent findings on mixing in fluid-saturated porous media convection. We focus on the dissolution of a heavy fluid layer into a lighter one, and we consider different flow configurations. We present Darcy, pore-scale and Hele-Shaw investigations inspired by geophysical processes. While the results obtained for Darcy flows match the dissolution behaviour predicted theoretically, Hele-Shaw and pore-scale investigations reveal a different and tangled scenario in which finite-size effects play a key role. Finally, we present recent numerical and experimental developments and we highlight possible future research directions. The findings reviewed in this work will be crucial to make reliable predictions about the long-term behaviour of dissolution and mixing in engineering and natural processes, which are required to tackle societal challenges such as climate change mitigation and energy transition.

Abstract:The flow characteristics of an oscillating flow including porous media are very important for designing oscillating-flow-based devices. A combined experimental and simulation study is carried out to provide a comprehensive quantitative understanding of the oscillating flows. The cycle rate through porous media, a particularly basic parameter, is proposed based on the dimensionless pressure drop as a correction factor for the similarity parameters of the oscillating flows. A modified dimensionless fluid displacement is introduced based on the cycle rate, and a correlation equation is proposed to calculate the cycle-averaged friction factor of porous media. Significant phase difference (7-71 degrees) is observed between the movements of gas inside porous media and pistons, which increases with the increasing pressure drop of porous media. Another correlation equation is proposed to predict the phase difference. It should be noted that the pressure drop of porous media would also affect the flows inside other heat exchangers between cylinder and porous media. The mass flow rate next to the cylinder is very different from that adjacent to the porous media in terms of amplitude and phase difference. Mass flow rates at different cross sections vary linearly with the volume between the piston upper surface and the monitored cross section. Finally, a quantitative method is proposed to describe the flow characteristics of an oscillating flow including porous media, which is expected to improve the design methods of oscillating-flow based devices. Abstract:This review examined the current advancements in data-driven methods for analyzing flow and transport in porous media, which has various applications in energy, chemical engineering, environmental science, and beyond. Although there has been progress in recent years, the challenges of current experimental and high-fidelity numerical simulations, such as high computational costs and difficulties in accurately representing complex, heterogeneous structures, can still potentially be addressed by state-of-the-art data-driven methods. We analyzed the synergistic potential of these methods, addressed their limitations, and suggested how they can be effectively integrated to improve both the fidelity and efficiency of current research. A discussion on future research directions in this field was conducted, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts that combine domain expertise in physics and advanced computationald and data-driven methodologies.

Abstract:Spontaneous or non‐spontaneous unidirectional fluid transport across multi‐dimension can occur under specific structural designs and ambient elements for porous materials. While existing reviews have extensively summarized unidirectional fluid transport on surfaces, there is an absence of literature summarizing fluid's unidirectional transport across porous materials. This review introduces wetting phenomena observed on natural biological surfaces or porous structures. Subsequently, it offers an overview of diverse principles and potential applications in this field, emphasizing various physical and chemical structural designs (surface energy, capillary size, topographic curvature) and ambient elements (underwater, under oil, pressure and solar energy). Applications encompass moisture‐wicking fabric, sensors, skincare, fog collection, oil‐water separation, electrochemistry, liquid‐based gating, and solar evaporators. Additionally, we have compiled significant principles and formulas from various studies to offer readers valuable references. Dynamics of Fluid Displacement in Mixed-Wet Porous Media

Abstract:We identify a distinct two-phase flow invasion pattern in a mixed-wet porous medium. Time-resolved high-resolution synchrotron X-ray imaging is used to study the invasion of water through a small rock sample filled with oil, characterized by a wide non-uniform distribution of local contact angles both above and below 90 ° . The water advances in a connected front, but throats are not invaded in decreasing order of size, as predicted by invasion percolation theory for uniformly hydrophobic systems. Instead, we observe pinning of the three-phase contact between the fluids and the solid, manifested as contact angle hysteresis, which prevents snap-off and interface retraction. In the absence of viscous dissipation, we use an energy balance to find an effective, thermodynamic, contact angle for displacement and show that this angle increases during the displacement. Displacement occurs when the local contact angles overcome the advancing contact angles at a pinned interface: it is wettability which controls the filling sequence. The product of the principal interfacial curvatures, the Gaussian curvature, is negative, implying well-connected phases which is consistent with pinning at the contact line while providing a topological explanation for the high displacement efficiencies in mixed-wet media.

Abstract:The study of flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media is very important and serves a wide variety of practical applications in processes such as enhanced oil recovery from underground reservoirs, filtration of polymer solutions and soil remediation through the removal of liquid pollutants. These fluids occur in diverse natural and synthetic forms and can be regarded as the rule rather than the exception. They show very complex strain and time dependent behavior and may have initial yield-stress. Their common feature is that they do not obey the simple Newtonian relation of proportionality between stress and rate of deformation. Non-Newtonian fluids are generally classified into three main categories: time-independent whose strain rate solely depends on the instantaneous stress, time-dependent whose strain rate is a function of both magnitude and duration of the applied stress and viscoelastic which shows partial elastic recovery on removal of the deforming stress and usually demonstrates both time and strain dependency. In this article the key aspects of these fluids are reviewed with particular emphasis on single-phase flow through porous media. The four main approaches for describing the flow in porous media are examined and assessed. These are: continuum models, bundle of tubes models, numerical methods and pore-scale network modeling.

Flow stability and permeability in a nonrandom porous medium analog

Abstract:The estimation of the permeability of porous media to fluids is of fundamental importance in fields as diverse as oil and gas industry, agriculture, hydrology and medicine. Despite more than 150 years since the publication of Darcy's linear law for flow in porous media, several questions remain regarding the range of validity of this law, the constancy of the permeability coefficient and how to define the transition from Darcy flow to other flow regimes. This study is a numerical investigation of the permeability and flow stability in a nonrandom quasi-tridimensional porous medium analog. The effect of increasing pressure gradient on the velocity field and on the estimation of Darcy and Darcy-Forchheimer coefficients is investigated for three different obstacle's radiuses. The transition from Darcy flow to nonlinear behavior is associated with the formation of jets in the outlet of the porous medium and development of flow instabilities. Different representations of the Reynolds number proved adequate to detect deviation from the linear law. The instantaneous permeability calculated at each pressure gradient was sensitive to flow velocity, in agreement with previous studies stating that permeability cannot be conceptualized as a constant for real flows.

Abstract:The Stokes flow of two immiscible fluids through a rigid porous medium is analyzed using the method of volume averaging. The volume-averaged momentum equations, in terms of averaged quantities and spatial deviations, are identical in form to that obtained for single phase flow; however, the solution of the closure problem gives rise to additional terms not found in the traditional treatment of two-phase flow. Qualitative arguments suggest that the nontraditional terms may be important whenμβ/μγ is of order one, and order of magnitude analysis indicates that they may be significant in terms of the motion of a fluid at very low volume fractions. The theory contains features that could give rise to hysteresis effects, but in the present form it is restricted to static contact line phenomena.

Abstract:Many key environmental, industrial and energy processes rely on controlling fluid transport within subsurface porous media. These media are typically structurally heterogeneous, often with vertically layered strata of distinct permeabilities – leading to uneven partitioning of flow across strata, which can be undesirable. Here, using direct in situ visualization, we demonstrate that polymer additives can homogenize this flow by inducing a purely elastic flow instability that generates random spatio-temporal fluctuations and excess flow resistance in individual strata. In particular, we find that this instability arises at smaller imposed flow rates in higher-permeability strata, diverting flow towards lower-permeability strata and helping to homogenize the flow. Guided by the experiments, we develop a parallel-resistor model that quantitatively predicts the flow rate at which this homogenization is optimized for a given stratified medium. Thus, our work provides a new approach to homogenizing fluid and passive scalar transport in heterogeneous porous media.

Abstract:PVF (polyvinyl formal) porous materials have attractive properties, such as noise attenuation, good structural integrity, thermal and chemical stability, high permeability and large specific surface area, for many flow-through applications. Several characteristics of the porous material will have an impact on the permeability, and gas flow and diffusion. However, the shape and the design of the device may also have significant impact on the gas flow. A porous media model and Darcy-Forchheimer principle were used as the basic theoretical frame. The unified governing equations were used to describe the compressible flow in and out of a PVF porous tube. A robust NND numerical scheme was used to discretize the equations and the TDBC (time-dependent boundary conditions) were used to treat the nonreflective boundaries. Numerical simulations of an interior and exterior flow field of a PVF porous tube were completed. The detailed flow characteristics of the inner and outer flow fields of the tube were obtained. The velocity distribution of the outside of the tube compare very well with the experimental data.

Abstract:This work reviews the transient two-phase flow in porous media with engineering applications in Geotechnics. It initially overviews constitutive relationships, conventional theories, and experiments. Then, corresponding limitations are discussed according to conflicting observations and multiphase interfacial dynamics. Based on those findings, the dynamic nonequilibrium effects were so defined, which could also be abbreviated as dynamic/transient effects. Four advanced theories have already been developed to resolve these effects. This review collects them and discusses their pros and cons. In addition, this work further reviews the state-of-art in terms of experimental methods, influential factors in dynamic/transient effects, and modelling performance, as well as micromodel and numerical methods at pore-scale. Last, the corresponding geotechnical applications are reviewed, discussing their applicability in effective stress, shear strength, and deformation. Finally, the entire review is briefed to identify research gaps in Geotechnics.

Abstract:Capillary energy barriers have important consequences for immiscible fluid flow in porous media. We derive time-and-space averaging theory to account for non-equilibrium behavior and understand the role of athermal capillary fluctuations in the context of their relationship to larger scale phenomenological equations. The formulation resolves several key challenges associated with two-fluid flow in porous media: (1) geometric and thermodynamic quantities are constructed as smooth functions of time based on time-and space averages; (2) averaged thermodynamics are developed for films; (3) multi-scale fluctuation terms are identified, which account for transient behaviours of interfaces and films that occur due to pore-scale events; (4) geometric constraints are derived and imposed on the averaged thermodynamics; (5) a new constitutive model is proposed for capillary pressure dynamics that includes contributions from films; and (6) a time-and-space criterion for representative elementary volume (REV) is established based on capillary fluctuations. Capillary fluctuations are assessed quantitatively based on pore-scale simulations and experimental core-flooding data.

Abstract:Two-phase flow with phase change in microstructure or nanostructure is an important issue in many fronts and critical applications nowadays, but with a lack of comprehensive understanding of the mechanism. This paper numerically investigates the transient behavior of two-phase flow with liquid phase change in the porous media, which consists of a series of connected pores at micro and nanoscale with the transient form of the semi-mixed model and self-compiled programs. Transient variation and spatial distribution of structure temperature, thermal non-equilibrium characteristic, phase change location and fluid-driven pressure are obtained and analyzed, and effects of initial system temperature, structure parameter and material property on the transient behaviors of two-phase flow and fluid-structure coupling heat transfer are discussed. The numerical simulations indicate that the two-phase flow with phase change in porous media is complex and ever-changing before reaching a steady state and affected by the above-mentioned three kinds of parameters significantly. Particularly, distinct phenomena of transient heat transfer deterioration and vapor block are discovered, and it is revealed that the transient heat transfer deterioration and vapor block are more serious in a porous matrix with smaller porosity and made of materials with higher heat capacity and density.
