Abstract:The octahedral sites in Co3O4 usually possess better oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, which have been identified as the active sites. Atomic cationic vacancy defects can elicit localized electron redistribution to regulate the electronic structure of the host materials. In this paper, Co3O4 nanosheet arrays with cationic vacancies at octahedral sites (V x -Co3O4) have been synthesized by a facile three-step reaction process. Density functional theory (DFT) computational results further indicate that the cationic vacancies can increase the number of electrons per Co atom and optimize the adsorption energy of the intermediate product. As a result, the optimized V0.3-Co3O4/CC electrode with abundant cationic vacancies displays excellent OER performance in alkaline electrolytes with an overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA cm–2, Tafel slope of 72.2 mV dec–1, and superior stability, which are much better than those of the pure Co3O4 and commercial IrO2.

Abstract:The development of high capacity, superior rate capability and long lifespan anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is an ongoing challenge for meeting the ever-increasing demand of high energy density and fast charging property. In this work, we report Co3O4−x nanocrystals with abundant oxygen-vacancy and pores as the anode for LIBs. Taking profit of the introduced oxygen-vacancy, pores and nanostructure, the Co3O4−x shows an increased electronic conductivity, shortened Li+ ions diffusion pathway, and enables ultrahigh pseudo-capacitive behavior, thereby providing a remarkable rate capability and an ultrahigh capacity beyond the redox chemistry. On the basis of this understanding, the Co3O4−x anode delivers high capacity (1616 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, 1 C = 1000 mA g−1), excellent cycling stability and can operate well at rates of 0.1–20 C (842 mAh g−1 at 20 C), which is significantly improved comparable to that of common Co3O4. Furthermore, applications of ex-situ XRD, FTIR, Raman and XPS tests demonstrate the reversible Li+ ions storage mechanism in such well-designed Co3O4−x. Our study highlights the great feasibility and validity of oxygen-vacancy and nanostructure for improving the Li+ ions storage performance.

Abstract:In aqueous aluminum-ion batteries(AAIBs), the insertion/extraction chemistry of Al3+ often leads to poor kinetics, whereas the rapid diffusion kinetics of hydrated hydrogen ions (H3O+) may offer the solution. However, the presence of considerable Al3+ in the electrolyte hinders the insertion reaction of H3O+. Herein, we report how oxygen-deficient α-MoO3 nanosheets unlock selective H3O+ insertion in a mild aluminum-ion electrolyte. The abundant oxygen defects impede the insertion of Al3+ due to excessively strong adsorption, while allowing H3O+ to be inserted/diffused through the Grotthuss proton conduction mechanism. This research advances our understanding of the mechanism behind selective H3O+ insertion in mild electrolytes.

Oxygen-defective V2O5 Nanosheets Boosting 3D Diffusion and Reversible Storage of Zinc Ion for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received considerable attention for reliable and low-cost energy storage. However, it remains a great challenge to develop cathode materials with high capacity and adequate cycle life due to the high polarization of bivalent Zn2+. Defect engineering has been demonstrated to enhance the electrochemical reaction sites but most defects are restricted to the surface of materials. We overcome this issue by incorporation of defect engineering and nanoengineering. Oxygen-defective V2O5 nanosheet arrays anchored on carbon cloth are employed as the cathode of ZIBs, which delivering comparable reversible capacity (322.9 and 256.6 at 1 and 5 A g-1) and stable cyclability (220 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 10 A g-1). Further DFT calculations validate that Zn2+ diffusion in oxygen-defective V2O5 is allowed along c axis, not only restricted along ab plane of V2O5, thus realizing a 3D Zn2+ diffusion with fast electrochemical kinetics and large capacitive storage. Moreover, the Zn2+ adsorption energies at defective sites of V2O5 was close to thermoneutral value, contributing reversible Zn2+ adsorption/desorption for ultra-stable Zn2+ storage performance. This synergistic strategy of defect engineering and nanoengineering reveal a promising potential for advanced materials of aqueous Zn-ion batteries and flexible storage applications.

Abstract:Abstract Efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes highly rely on the rational design and synthesis of high‐performance electrocatalysts. Herein, comprehensive characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are combined to verify the important roles of the crystallinity and oxygen vacancy levels of Co(II) oxide (CoO) on ORR and OER activities. A facile and controllable vacuum‐calcination strategy is utilized to convert Co(OH) 2 into oxygen‐defective amorphous‐crystalline CoO (namely ODAC‐CoO) nanosheets. With the carefully controlled crystallinity and oxygen vacancy levels, the optimal ODAC‐CoO sample exhibits dramatically enhanced ORR and OER electrocatalytic activities compared with the pure crystalline CoO counterpart. The assembled liquid and quasi‐solid‐state Zn–air batteries with ODAC‐CoO as cathode material achieve remarkable specific capacity, power density, and excellent cycling stability, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C + IrO 2 catalysts. This study theoretically proposes and experimentally demonstrates that the simultaneous introduction of amorphous structures and oxygen vacancies could be an effective avenue towards high‐performance electrocatalytic ORR and OER.

Synthesis of ultrathin Co2AlO4 nanosheets with oxygen vacancies for enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Abstract:In this work, we reported the synthesis of two-dimensional spinel structure of ultrathin Co2AlO4 nanosheets via dealloying and subsequent annealing processes. Oxygen vacancy defects were further introduced into Co2AlO4 nanosheets by a mild solvothermal reduction method, resulting in large electrochemical surface area and high active site densities, making the related Co atoms get electrons, and producing more empty orbitals. The positive charge of Co and Al atoms adjacent to the O vacancies in VO-rich Co2AlO4 reduced significantly, that is, more electrons are concentrated on the Co and Al atoms. Those electrons closed to the Fermi level have a promoting effect during the H2O activation. As a result, the obtained ultrathin Co2AlO4 nanosheets with oxygen vacancies show a low overpotential of 280 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 70.98 mV dec−1. Moreover, it also displays a remarkable stability in alkaline solution, which is superior to most of the reported Co3O4 electrocatalysts. The present work paves a new way to achieve efficient new energetic materials for sustainable community.

Abstract:Tuning energy levels plays a crucial role in developing cost-effective, earth-abundant, and highly active oxygen evolution catalysts. However, to date, little attention has been paid to the effect of using heteroatom-occupied lattice sites on the energy level to engineer electrocatalytic activity. In order to explore heteroatom-engineered energy levels of spinel Co3 O4 for highly-effective oxygen electrocatalysts, herein Al atoms are directly introduced into the crystal lattice by occupying the Co2+ ions in the tetrahedral sites and Co3+ ions in the octahedral sites (denoted as Co2+ Td and Co3+ Oh , respectively). Experimental and theoretical simulations demonstrate that Al3+ ions substituting Co2+ Td and Co3+ Oh active sites, especially Al3+ ions occupying the Co2+ Td sites, optimizes the adsorption, activation, and desorption features of intermediate species during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes. As a result, the optimized Co1.75 Al1.25 O4 nanosheet exhibit unprecedented OER activity with an ultralow overpotential of 248 mV to deliver a current of 10 mA cm-2 , among the best Co-based OER electrocatalysts. This work should not only provide fundamental understanding of the effect of Al-occupied different Co sites in Co3-x Alx O4 composites on OER performance, but also inspire the design of low-cost, earth-abundant, and high-active electrocatalysts toward water oxidation.
Synergistic effect of fluorine doping and oxygen vacancies on electrochemical performance of ZnCo 2 O 4 for advanced supercapacitors and Zn-ion batteries

Abstract:Defects in nanomaterials have been widely used to introduce new properties of pristine materials for electrochemical energy storage. However, most of the research has focused on the effect of single defect while ignoring the synergy of multifold defects on enhancing electrochemical performance. Herein, we have modeled bulk phase oxygen substitution and surface oxygen vacancy on ZnCo 2 O 4 nanowires grown on nickel foam for the first time (F-ZnCo 2 O 4-x ), revealing the role of double defects and providing new insights into the effects of electrochemical properties. The enhanced oxygen vacancy concentration and increased active sites enable rapid and sufficient redox reaction of the active components. Therefore, the representative F-ZnCo 2 O 4-x electrode achieves a high specific capacity of 664 mAh·g −1 at 1 A·g −1 . Moreover, high energy density (E HSC , 60 Wh·kg −1 ) and good cycle stability (90.44% capacity retention after 10000 cycles) could be provided as a battery-type electrode of hybrid supercapacitor. The electrodes also have high energy density (E cell , 692 Wh·kg −1 ) and good durability (capacity retention of 98.8% after 2000 cycles) when used as zinc ion batteries. This work supplies a new avenue on the universality of defect engineering to design bimetallic oxide with high electrochemical performance.

Oxygen-Defect Enhanced Anion Adsorption Energy Toward Super-Rate and Durable Cathode for Ni–Zn Batteries

Abstract:Abstract The alkaline zinc-based batteries with high energy density are becoming a research hotspot. However, the poor cycle stability and low-rate performance limit their wide application. Herein, ultra-thin CoNiO 2 nanosheet with rich oxygen defects anchored on the vertically arranged Ni nanotube arrays (O d -CNO@Ni NTs) is used as a positive material for rechargeable alkaline Ni–Zn batteries. As the highly uniform Ni nanotube arrays provide a fast electron/ion transport path and abundant active sites, the O d -CNO@Ni NTs electrode delivers excellent capacity (432.7 mAh g −1 ) and rate capability (218.3 mAh g −1 at 60 A g −1 ). Moreover, our O d -CNO@Ni NTs//Zn battery is capable of an ultra-long lifespan (93.0% of initial capacity after 5000 cycles), extremely high energy density of 547.5 Wh kg −1 and power density of 92.9 kW kg −1 (based on the mass of cathode active substance). Meanwhile, the theoretical calculations reveal that the oxygen defects can enhance the interaction between electrode surface and electrolyte ions, contributing to higher capacity. Abstract:Rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries have attracted increasing attention owing to the advantageous multivalent ion storage mechanism thus high theoretical capacity as well as inherent safety and low cost of using aluminum. However, their development has been largely impeded by the lack of suitable positive electrodes to provide both sufficient energy density and satisfactory rate capability. Here we report a candidate positive electrode based on ternary metal oxides, Fe2(MoO4)3, which was assembled by cross-stacking of porous nanosheets, featuring superior rate performance and cycle stability, and most importantly a well-defined discharge voltage plateau near 1.9 V. Specifically, the positive electrode is able to deliver reversible capacities of 239.3 mA h g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 and 73.4 mA h g-1 at 8.0 A g-1, and retains 126.5 mA h g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 impressively, after 2000 cycles. Furthermore, the aluminum-storage mechanism operating on Al3+ intercalation in this positive electrode is demonstrated for the first time via combined in situ and ex situ characterization studies and density functional theory calculations. This work not only explores potential positive electrodes for aluminum-based batteries but also sheds light on the fundamental charge storage mechanism within the electrode.
Nanosphere-rod-like Co3O4 As High Performance Cathode Material for Aluminium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Aluminium ion batteries are considered to be a promising development for large-scale energy storage and conversion applications. In this research, a nanosphere-rod-like Co3O4 has been synthesized after the hydro thermal reaction and the subsequent heat treatment process, which is used for the cathode materials of aluminium ion batteries. The working mechanisms of the Co3O4 are deeply investigated. It is found that the electrochemical deposition and dissolution of aluminum occurs on the surface of pure aluminium anode, and the Al3+ cations are intercalated and de-intercalated in the cathode materials during the discharge and charge processes. The battery exhibits a high discharge specific capacity of 490 mAh g(-1) at the first cycle, with the current density of 50 mA g(-1). Furthermore, the discharge capacity still maintains a high level of 122.1 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at the current density of 200 mA g(-1), indicating a good cycle performance. Therefore, the nanosphere-rod-like Co3O4 as the cathode for aluminium ion batteries has a promising potential.
Co-Construction of Solid Solution Phase and Void Space in Yolk-Shell Fe0.4Co0.6S@N-Doped Carbon to Enhance Cycling Capacity and Rate Capability for Aluminum-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs), using low-cost and inherent safety Al metal anodes, are regarded as promising energy storage devices next to lithium-ion batteries. Currently, one of the greatest challenges for AIBs is to explore cathodes suitable for feasible Al3+ insertion/extraction with high structure stability. Herein, a facile co-engineering on solid solution phase and cavity structure is developed via Prussian blue analogues by a simple and facile sulfidation strategy. The obtained uniform yolk-shell Fe0.4Co0.6S@N-doped carbon nanocages (y-s Fe0.4Co0.6S@NC) display a high reversible capacity of 141.3 mA h g-1 at 500 mA g-1 after 100 cycles and a good rate capability of 100.9 mA h g-1 at 1000 mA g-1. The improved performance can be mainly ascribed to the dual merits of the composite; that is, more negative Al3+ formation energy and improved Al3+ diffusion kinetics favored by the solid solution phase and Al3+ insertion/extraction accommodable space stemmed from the yolk-shell structure. Moreover, the reaction mechanism study discloses that the reaction involves the intercalation of Al3+ ions into Fe0.4Co0.6S to generate AllFemConS and elemental Fe and Co.
High performance of Co 3 O 4 @carbon composites as anodes for Lithium‐ion batteries

Abstract:Metal oxides suffer from huge volume changes and poor electrical conductivity as anode materials in lithium‐ion batteries. Many nanostructures have been designed to improve the electrochemical performance of metal oxide anodes. In this work, Co3O4@carbon composites are prepared via hydrothermal reaction. The as‐prepared Co3O4@carbon composites displayed good lithium storage performance and excellent cycling stability. The Co3O4@carbon anode showed a high capacity of 986 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. The superior electrochemical performance of the Co3O4@carbon anode is attributed to its unique hybrid structure, which can improve electrical conductivity and act as a buffer for the volume change during electrochemical reactions. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Abstract:Alkaline zinc ion batteries have attracted attention as potential energy storage devices but remain challenging due to the low utilization rate of active substances, poor conductivity, and few active sites. In order to solve these shortcomings, we grow ultrathin nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxides (NiCo LDH) by electrodeposition on Co 3 O 4 surfaces, and generated abundant oxygen vacancies in the inner layer of the core-shell structure by electrochemical method. The special core-shell structure improves the contact between the active material and the electrolyte, bringing a positive effect on ion diffusion and charge transfer during the energy storage process. At the same time, the abundant oxygen vacancies not only effectively improve the conductivity and the number of active sites of the material, but also improve the valence state conversion ability of the cobalt element. As expected Co 3 O 4 -O V /NiCo LDH exhibits a specific capacity of 338.47 mAh g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 and a high average discharge potential of 1.65 V relative to Zn 2+ /Zn. Furthermore, the characterizations combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the generation of oxygen vacancies improves the conductivity and the number of active sites which results in excellent reversible electrochemical activity. This work not only provides new insight into designing advanced electrodes by introducing oxygen vacancies but also opens up avenues for the development of high-performance zinc-cobalt batteries.

Defect-engineered TiO2 nanocrystals for enhanced lithium-ion battery storage performance

Abstract:TiO2 nanocrystals containing oxygen defects were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method with reductive sintering in a 5% H2 + 95% Ar mixed atmosphere. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that the prepared samples were all anatase TiO2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the reductive sintering converted Ti4+ to Ti3+. The Ti3+/Ti4+ molar ratio of the TiO2 nanocrystals increased with increasing sintering time. The results of the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis showed that the reduced and sintered TiO2 nanocrystals produced strong signals at g = 2.0010 and 1.9478, corresponding to the presence of oxygen defects and Ti3+, respectively. Furthermore, stronger signals were generated with increasing sintering time, indicating a progressively higher concentration of oxygen defects. The TiO2 nanocrystalswere used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. One sample, H-TiO2-5, containing a moderate concentration of oxygen defects, presented a higher lithium ion diffusion coefficient (D = 5.1 × 10-13 cm2s−1) compared to the other TiO2 samples. This sample had a Ti3+/Ti4+ molar ratio of 0.179 and excellent cycling stability after 100 cycles. The discharge capacity was 124 mAh.g−1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 1C, which means that it has good cyclic stability.

Abstract:In this paper, a titanium pyrophosphate (TiP2O7) anode with oxygen vacancies is prepared by a simple one-pot solid method, exhibiting great performance. Herein, we study on the physical and chemical changes of TiP2O7-y with oxygen defect, and compare it with pure TiP2O7 through scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and so on. It is found that the introduction of oxygen vacancies leads an improved electronic conductivity compared to the pure TiP2O7 sample. Intriguingly, the TiP2O7-y with oxygen defect displays an enhanced electrochemical performance in aqueous lithium ion batteries (ALIBs), with a larger capacity of TiP2O7-y (57 mAh g(-1)) as compared to pure TiP2O7 (17 mAh g(-1)) at 0.2 A g(-1). After carbon-coating treatment, the C-TiP2O7-y anode demonstrates outstanding capacity and cycling performance with a capacity retention of 89% after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g(-1). More importantly, the full ALIBs coupled with LiMn2O4 cathode maintains 85% capacity after 800 cycles at 0.1 A g(-1). This study underscores the potential importance of incorporating oxygen vacancies into metal oxides as an alternative to modify the electrode materials in energy storage field. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:3D hierarchical flower‐like carbon coated MoO3−x nanosheets (denoted as MoO3−x NS@C) have been successfully fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method. When used as anode for Li‐ion batteries, the MoO3−x NS@C electrode exhibits excellent cycle performance and outstanding rate capabilities. The charge capacity can reach 1025 mAh g−1 over 150 cycles, and 62% of the charge capacity is retained when the current density increases to 2000 mA g−1. The improved lithium storage performance of MoO3−x NS@C is attributed to the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies and the carbon coating, which not only enhance the electric conductivity and Li‐ion diffusion coefficient but also lead to superior structural stability and cyclability of the MoO3−x NS@C electrode during repeated lithiation/delithiation process.
Oxygen vacancy-expedited ion diffusivity in transition-metal oxides for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Rapid capacity decay and inferior kinetics are the vital issues of anodes in the conversion reaction for lithium-ion batteries. Vacancy engineering can efficiently modulate the intrinsic properties of transition-metal oxide (TMO)-based electrode materials, but the effect of oxygen vacancies on electrode performance remains unclear. Herein, abundant oxygen vacancies are in situ introduced into the lattice of different TMOs (e.g., Co3O4, Fe2O3, and NiO) via a facile hydrothermal treatment combined with calcination. Taking Co3O4 as a typical example, results prove that the oxygen vacancies in Co3O4−x effectively accelerate charge transfer at the interface and significantly increase electrical conductivity and pseudocapacitance contribution. The Li-ion diffusion coefficient of Co3O4−x is remarkably improved by two orders of magnitude compared with that of Co3O4. Theoretical calculations reveal that Co3O4−x has a lower Li-insertion energy barrier and more density of states around the Fermi level than Co3O4, which is favorable for ion and electron transport. Therefore, TMOs with rich vacancies exhibit superior cycling performance and enhanced rate capability over their counterparts. This strategy regulating the reaction kinetics would provide inspiration for designing other TMO-based electrodes for energy applications.

Abstract:Although defect engineering is widely reported in catalysis, the influence of defects on electrochemical performance is less reported and the defect-related electrochemical mechanism is not fully understood. In this work, the oxygen vacancy concentration is controlled simply by calcining different precursors. The Co3O4 samples by prepared cobalt-thiourea coordination and cobalt nitrate precursors are named as S1 and S2, respectively. It is found that cobalt-thiourea coordination compound can provide an oxygen-rich skeleton, thus reducing oxygen vacancy; the specific capacitance of S1 (79.5 F/g) is 12.5 times higher than that of S2 (5.9 F/g) at 0.2 A/g. The remarkably improved capacitance is mainly attributed to the appropriate amount of oxygen vacancy for S1. Theory calculations confirm that an appropriate concentration of oxygen vacancy favors the desorption of K+ and the adsorption of OH–, and the kinetics of surface redox reaction; while excessive oxygen vacancies are disadvantageous to the electrochemical process. Additionally, the S1-based asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) displays a high energy density of 176 μWh/cm3, a high power density of 218 mW/cm3, and a long cycling life (72.6% capacitance retention after 2500 charge/discharge cycles). The ASC is so flexible that it can be easily assembled in series to drive a light-emitting diode to work. This work provides a simple, low-cost method for producing high-quality electrode materials on a large scale.
