Abstract:Exploring effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial requirement of many energy storage and conversion systems, involving fuel cells, water splitting, and metal-air batteries. Herein, a heterogeneity metal-organic framework (MOF) is prepared by the assembling of metals, terephthalic (A) and 2-aminoterephthalic ligands (B), defined as A(2.7)B-MOF-FeCo1.6. More importantly, A(2.7)B-MOF-FeCo1.6 exhibits excellent OER activity with an ultralow overpotential of 288 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of 39 mV dec(-1). The high electrocatalytic performance for OER is attributed to the optimized electronic structure of the intrinsic catalytic center in MOFs via the engineering of the metal node and linkers. The work offers not only a benchmark for pure MOFs in electrocatalysis but also a new efficient strategy to improve electrocatalytic performance by electronic structure engineering of catalytic active centers in MOFs.

Abstract:As a kind of promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are often constrained by their inherent poor electroconductivity and structural instability. In this study, we developed a mono-dispersed zeolitic imidazolate framework-67@cuprous oxide (ZIF-67@Cu2O) core-shell catalyst via in-situ growth method for highly efficient alkaline OER. The ZIF-67@Cu2O shows an excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 254 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and Tafel slope of 87.9 mV·dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH. Furthermore, the ZIF-67@Cu2O also shows a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.166 s-1 at 1.60 V vs. RHE and long-term stability for 160 h at a high current density of 100 mA cm-2. The unique core-shell structure with the Cu2O core linked with ZIF-67 shell through interfacial di-oxygen bridge improves the structural stability, enhances the charge transfer, and provides more active sites. Moreover, the interfacial coordination structure was regulated from Co-N4 to Co-N2O2 which elevates the valence of Co sites and optimizes the adsorption free energy of oxygen-containing intermediates, thus improving the electrocatalytic OER performance. This work could propose the way for designing novel MOF-based nanomaterials and developing desirable and robust heterogeneous OER catalysts.

Abstract:The construction of efficient, durable, and non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great value but challenging. Herein, a facile method is developed to synthesize a series of trimetallic (W/Co/Fe) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived carbon nanoflakes (CNF) with various Fe content, and an Fe-dependent volcano-type plot can be drawn out for WCoFex-CNF. The optimized WCoFe0.3-CNF (when the feed ratio of Fe/Co is 0.3) demonstrates superior electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential of only 254 mV@10 mA cm(-2) and excellent durability of 100 h. Further researches show that appropriate amount of iron doping can regulate the electronic structure, resulting in a favorable synergistic environment. This method may stimulate the exploration of electrocatalysts by utilizing MOFs as precursors while realizing electronic modulation by multimetal doping.

Abstract:The development of high efficiency and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution is critical for energy storage and conversion systems. Herein, a series of Co/Fe bimetal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were fabricated using a facile ultrasonic method at room temperature, as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution. The Co2Fe-MOF exhibited an overpotential of 280 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 44.7 mV dec−1, and long-term stability over 12000 s in 1 mol L−1 KOH. This impressive performance was attributed to the high charge transfer rate, large specific surface area, and synergistic effects of the cobalt and iron centers.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Chemically bonded MOFs on supports are desirable yet lacking in routine synthesis, as they may allow variable structural evolution and the underlying structure-activity relationship to be disclosed. Herein, direct MOF synthesis is achieved by an organic acid-etching strategy (AES). Using π-conjugated ferrocene (Fc) dicarboxylic acid as the etching agent and organic ligand, a series of MFc-MOF (M = Ni, Co, Fe, Zn) nanosheets are synthesized on the metal supports. The crystal structure is studied using X-ray diffraction and low-dose transmission electron microscopy, which is quasi-lattice-matched with that of the metal, enabling in-situ MOF growth. Operando Raman and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy disclose that the NiFc-MOF features dynamic structural rebuilding during OER. The reconstructed one showing optimized electronic structures with an upshifted total d-band center, high M-O bonding state occupancy, and localized electrons on adsorbates indicated by density functional theory calculations, exhibits outstanding OER performance with a fairly low overpotential (130 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and good stability (144 h). The newly established approach for direct MOF synthesis and structural reconstruction disclosure stimulate the development of more prudent catalysts for advancing OER.

Abstract:Splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen is the key reaction in energy storage and conversion applications, in which the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is kinetically very difficult due to the involved 4-electron process.Some precious metal oxides are the best electrocatalysts for the OER so far.With suitable crystal sizes/morphologies, some non-precious metal oxides/hydroxides can also exhibit good catalysis activities.However, the surface structures or active sites of these heterogeneous catalysts are very difficult to precisely characterize, preventing understanding the catalysis mechanisms.Porous coordination polymers or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), possessing very large inner pore spaces and surface areas, as well as accurate pore surface structures that can be readily visualized by diffraction techniques, have attracted intense attention in applications related to adsorption and catalysis.However, MOFs are usually unstable in water, especially for those with open/active metal sites and in strongly acidic/basic mediums that are useful for OER.Therefore, only few MOFs have been studied as electrocatalysts for OER and their activities are usually poor.Recently, a few MOFs showing high chemical stabilities in water and redox active open metal sites on their pore surfaces were reported.Here, we introduce recent research progresses in our research group: (1) Post-synthetic ion exchange from chloride ligand to hydroxide ligand on the pore surface in water at pH = 14, which not only drastically increases the OER performance but also provide the first experimental evidence for the intraframework O-O coupling mechanism; (2) Modular and stepwise synthesis of a hybrid MOF, which stabilizes the unstable paddle-wheel type dicobalt tetracarboxylate cluster in a chemically Fe(III) carboxylate framework and realizes very high OER performance.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) is considered to be one of the most promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts owing to its unique physical and chemical properties. However, the direct application of MOF to OER may have the problem of poor stability. In this work, a novel Co-Cu MOF-derived oxide [(Co-Cu)Ox] electrocatalyst was successfully prepared by ion exchange and air annealing. (Co-Cu)Ox exhibited an overpotential of 327 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and retained 96.8 % of its initial current density after 20 h of chronoamperometry. The fine oxygen-evolution performance of (Co-Cu)Ox was due to the fact that Cu2+ doping improved the catalyst conductivity, and the synergistic effect of Co2+/Co3+ and Cu+/Cu2+ redox pairs played an important role in the OER.

Abstract:Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported as potential catalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, it is still a great challenge to rationally design robust MOF catalysts with reasonable ligands due to the lack of research on tunable structure architecture. Herein, a series of Fe-based MOFs with tunable ligands have been designed and synthesized for OER for the first time. The functionalized Fe-MOFs-NHCHO and Fe-MOFs-NO2 derived catalysts show higher OER activity than the pristine Fe-MOFs. Remarkably, the best-performing Fe-MOFs-NHCHO shows an ultra-low overpotential of 246 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), which is 37 mV lower than Fe-MOFs. This research provides a new design concept based on MOFs materials, in the hope of finding excellent OER catalysts.

Abstract:The remarkable potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has garnered significant attention, primarily attributed to their unique and adjustable structural characteristics, which hold promise for various applications, including electrocatalysis. Nevertheless, utilizing MOFs directly in oxygen electrocatalysis presents a formidable challenge due to the intricate control needed to modulate their size, composition, and morphology while ensuring an abundance of active sites. Here, we present a straightforward synthesis method that generates novel NiCoFe-based trimetallic MOF nanostructures. These structures demonstrate exceptional catalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions when employed as catalysts. Specifically, the FeNi 2 Co 1 -MOF exhibits the crucial overpotential of 143 mV required to attain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, it showcases a low Tafel slope of 68 mV dec −1 and maintains outstanding durability throughout extensive long-term testing.

Abstract:The construction of low-cost and highly efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalysts is paramount for clean and sustainable hydrogen energy. In recent years, metal-organic framework (MOF) OER electrocatalysts have attracted tremendous research attention. Herein, we report a simple and facile strategy to construct bimetallic MOFs (named CoMn0.01) for enhancing OER catalytic performance. Significantly, CoMn0.01 exhibited remarkable OER activity (255 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and a low Tafel slope of 66 mV dec-1, superior to those of commercial benchmark electrocatalysts (RuO2, 352 mV, 178 mV dec-1). Besides, the catalyst demonstrated outstanding longevity for 144 h at a current density of 100 mA cm -2. Mn doping can regulate the electronic structure of Co MOFs, which optimizes charge transfer capability and improves conductivity.

Abstract:Rational design of facile and low-cost efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to solve the energy crisis. Benefiting from in situ self-reconstruction from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to (oxy)hydroxides in alkaline electrolytes, MOFs have become alternative OER catalysts. Thus, Fe-doped Co-MOF nanosheets (Co-MOF/Fe) were prepared and utilized straightforwardly as OER electrocatalysts. CoFe-layered bimetallic hydroxides (CoFe-LDHs) with abundant active sites are obtained from in situ conversion of Co-MOF/Fe after etching by the KOH electrolyte, which are generally actual active species. Meanwhile, the introduction of Fe ions will also produce a synergistic effect that greatly improves the electrocatalytic OER performance. The optimized catalyst (Co-MOF/Fe10) shows exceptional OER activity (η10 = 260 mV) and excellent durability over 50 h. The outstanding OER performance of Co-MOF/Fe10 can also be reflected in the two-electrode hydrolyzer (1.57 V at 10 mA cm-2). This study offers a pathway to probe the catalytic mechanism of MOFs and the rational construction of efficient MOF-derived catalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising platform materials for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, Hofmann MOFs are applied as platforms to study the interaction between different metal elements and their influence on the OER activity. In all the MOFs, the Fe/Co mixed Hofmann MOF (CoFe-PYZ) demonstrates the lowest overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in alkaline conditions (pH = 13). The Tafel slope of (CoFe-PYZ) is 44 mV dec(-1). The enhanced catalytic activity is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects between Co2+ and Fe2+ ions, which is confirmed via XPS and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:Rationally designing highly active electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is exceedingly essential for ecologically sustainable development, but is still a principal research challenge due to the sluggish four-electron kinetics. Due to their structural diversity and ultra-high surface area, metal–organic framework (MOF) ultrathin nanosheets have expected to provide not only more accessible active sites, but also faster mass transfer and diffusion and have been realized as OER electrocatalysts. Therefore, we develop the controllable synthesis of Co-based MOF ultrathin nanosheets (NMOF-Co) incorporated with different-valence Fe ions, which are used as a high-performance electrocatalyst via a post-synthetic modification method. The binary metal electrocatalyst demonstrated more effective kinetics than the single metal electrocatalysts. By virtue, the obtained electrocatalyst with a uniform thickness of ~4.0 nm (defined as (Fe(II)1Fe(III)1)0.6/NMOF-Co) sets in at potential of only 1.56 V with small Tafel slope of 50 mVdec-1, which is more superb than that of RuO2 and bulk material Fe(II)1Fe(III)1)0.6/Bulk-MOF-Co. The findings show that the structure of ultrathin nanosheets and the Fe incorporation are critical to the outstanding performance of MOF nanosheets for tuning the electrocatalytic activity, which is of great significance in the field of MOF electrocatalysis.

Abstract:A facile synthesis is reported of two-dimensional (2D) bimetallic (Fe/Co=1:2) metal-organic frameworks (MOF, ca. 2.2 nm thick) via simple stirring of the reaction mixture of Fe/Co salts and 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid (1,4-BDC) in the presence of triethylamine and water at room temperature. The mechanism of the 2D, rather than bulk, MOF was revealed by studying the role of each component in the reaction mixture. It was found that these 2D MOF-Fe/Co(1:2) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under basic conditions. The electrocatalytic mechanism was disclosed via both experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The 2D morphology and co-doping of Fe/Co contributed to the superior OER performance of the 2D MOF-Fe/Co(1:2). The simple and efficient synthetic method is suitable for the mass production and future commercialization of functional 2D MOF with low cost and high yield.

Abstract:Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have served as favorable prototypes for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Despite promising catalytic activity, their OER reaction kinetics are still limited by the sluggish four-electron transfer process. Herein, we develop a ferrocene carboxylic acid (FcCA) partially substituted cobalt-terephthalic acid (CoBDC) catalyst with a bifunctional microreactor composed of two species of Co active sites and ligand FcCA (CoBDC FcCA). Benefiting from the ultrathin nanosheet structure, CoBDC FcCA catalyst exhibits an excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 280 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 53 mV dec-1. Structure characterization together with theoretical calculations directly unravel the coordination for two species of Co active moieties with FcCA forming a microreactor of tensile strain, leading to a conversion of the Co spin from a high spin state (t2g5eg2) to an intermediate spin state (t2g6eg1) to regulate antibonding states of Co 3d and O 2p orbital. In situ spectroscopic measurements for mechanistic understanding reveal that this CoBDC FcCA catalyst possesses an optimal OH* adsorption energy for propitious formation of O-O bonds in the OOH* intermediate, thus effectively decreasing the thermodynamic Gibbs free energy of the rate-determining step (O* → OOH*) to accelerate reaction kinetics for the whole OER process. When loaded on an integrated BiVO4 photoanode as a cocatalyst, CoBDC FcCA enables highly active solar-driven oxygen production from water splitting.

Abstract:Exploiting advanced electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for the development of metal-air batteries, fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Rational design and fabrication of electrocatalysts with high specific areas, abundant expose active sites, and porous structures is an effective approach to improve the electrocatalytic performances. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of porous crystalline materials, which possess large surface areas, high porosities, componential and structural diversity, has shown great potential as efficient OER electrocatalysts. This review focus on the recent progress of fabrication and utilization of transition metal (e.g., Fe, Co, and Ni) based MOF materials including pristine MOFs, MOF composites and their derivatives for OER. A variety of typical strategies, including synthetic designs, compositional, and structural modifications for activity improvement of the MOF-based materials in the OER are outlined and discussed. Based on the previous achievements, the current state of the art and the perspectives for the future development of the field are summarized.

Abstract:The design of an efficient OER catalyst is significant for water splitting. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as promising electrocatalysts due to their diversity of structure and tunability of function. In this paper, 2D FeCo-MOF/NF with an extended ligand (biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid, BPDC) is constructed on nickel foam by a solvothermal method. Compared with the MOF synthesized by using BDC (1,4-bezenedicarboxylate), MOF shows excellent performance. Among MOF, FeCo-MOF/NF exhibits outstanding performance with a low overpotential (217 mV) and a small Tafel slope (31.16 mV Dec) at 10 mA cm and performs well at a high current density. In addition, the catalyst is remarkable in terms of durability both in alkaline solution and simulated seawater. The synergetic effect between Fe and Co and more active sites exposed play an important role in improving the OER activity. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of MOFs as inexpensive electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Electron modulation presents a captivating approach to fabricate efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet it remains a challenging undertaking. In this study, we propose an effective strategy to regulate the electronic structure of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by the construction of MOF‐on‐MOF heterogeneous architectures. As a representative heterogeneous architectures, MOF‐74 on MOF‐274 hybrids are in‐situ prepared on three‐dimensional (3D) metal substrates (NiFe alloy foam (NFF)) via a two‐step self‐assembly method, resulting in MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF. Through a combination of spectroscopic and theory calculation, our study unveils the successful modulation of the electronic property of MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF. This modulation arises from the phase conjugation of the two MOFs and the synergistic effect of the multi‐metallic centers (Ni and Fe). Consequently, MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF exhibits excellent OER activity, displaying ultralow overpotentials of 198 and 223 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the 1.0 and 0.1 M KOH solutions, respectively. Ligand-engineered Ni-based Metal–organic Frameworks for Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Regulating morphology and crystal structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as well as fabricating bimetallic MOFs have been widely proposed to optimize the electronic structure of MOFs and thus enhance electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. Distinguish from these conventional and complex strategies, this work mainly focuses on the convenient ligand-engineering strategy to optimize the electronic structure of Ni-MOFs. Specifically, the electron-rich ferrocene (Fc) unit is linked into the ligand of Ni-MIL-53-NH2 by the stable covalent bond on the basis of Schiff-base reaction. Noticeably, the resulting Ni-MIL-53-Fc exhibits significantly enhanced OER activity compared to parent Ni-MIL-53-NH2, achieving 6.6-times improvement of TOF value from 0.19 to 1.25 s-1 at the overpotential of 350 mV. Further characterizations confirm that the incorporation of Fc unit can enhance the charge transfer, which induces more electrons aggregated in the Ni active sites and thus improves the intrinsic activity of Ni sites toward OER activity. This ligand-engineering strategy can be extended to fabricate highly active and stable catalysts toward other electrocatalytic reactions.
Origin of Enhanced Oxygen Evolution in Restructured Metal‐Organic Frameworks for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

Abstract:Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), praised for structural flexibility and tunability, are prominent catalyst prototypes for exploring oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Yet, their intricate transformations under OER, especially in industrial high-current environments, pose significant challenges in accurately elucidating their structure-activity correlation. Here, we harnessed an electrooxidation process for controllable MOF reconstruction, discovering that Fe doping expedites Ni(Fe)-MOF structural evolution, accompanied by the elongation of Ni-O bonds, monitored by in-situ Raman and UV-visible spectroscopy. Theoretical modeling further reveals that Fe doping and defect-induced tensile strain in the NiO6 octahedra augments the metal ds-Op hybridization, optimizing their adsorption behavior and augmenting OER activity. The reconstructed Ni(Fe)-MOF, serving as the anode in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis, achieves a noteworthy current density of 3.3 A cm-2 at 2.2 V while maintaining equally stable operation for 160 h spanning from 0.5 A cm-2 to 1 A cm-2. This undertaking elevates our comprehension of OER catalyst reconstruction, furnishing promising avenues for designing highly efficacious catalysts across electrochemical platforms.
