Abstract:The construction of efficient, durable, and non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great value but challenging. Herein, a facile method is developed to synthesize a series of trimetallic (W/Co/Fe) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived carbon nanoflakes (CNF) with various Fe content, and an Fe-dependent volcano-type plot can be drawn out for WCoFex-CNF. The optimized WCoFe0.3-CNF (when the feed ratio of Fe/Co is 0.3) demonstrates superior electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential of only 254 mV@10 mA cm(-2) and excellent durability of 100 h. Further researches show that appropriate amount of iron doping can regulate the electronic structure, resulting in a favorable synergistic environment. This method may stimulate the exploration of electrocatalysts by utilizing MOFs as precursors while realizing electronic modulation by multimetal doping.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials are regarded as potential electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) resulting from the abundant pore structures, large surface area and atomically dispersed metal centers, while their coordinately saturated metal nodes are inert to electrocatalysis. In this work, creating active sites while accelerating charge transport is proposed to improve the OER properties of MOF-derived layered double hydroxides (MLDH). By using multifunctional Ti3C2 MXene as support and post-treating MOF with an etching-coprecipitating process, the resultant CoFe MLDH/Ti3C2 exhibits prominent OER performance with ultralow overpotentials of only 170 and 238 mV to achieve the current density of 10 and 100 mA/cm2, respectively. In addition, the experimental and theoretical calculation results prove the strong electronic interaction between CoFe MLDH and Ti3C2 MXene could modulate the binding strength of intermediates for OER. This work gives a direction to prepare MOF-based efficient catalysts and enhance the intrinsic activity of (oxy)hydroxide-based catalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as promising electrocatalysts have been widely studied, but their performance is limited by conductivity and coordinating saturation. This study proposes a cationic (V) modification strategy and evaluates its effect on the electrocatalytic performance of CoFe-MOF nanosheet arrays. The optimal V-CoFe-MOF/NF electrocatalyst exhibits excellent oxygen-evolution reaction (OER)/hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) performance (231 mV at 100 mA cm-2/86 mV at 10 mA cm-2) in alkaline conditions, with its OER durability exceeding 400 h without evident degradation. Furthermore, as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting, a small cell voltage is achieved (1.60 V at 10 mA cm-2). The practicability of the catalyst is further evaluated by membrane electrode assembly (MEA), showing outstanding activity (1.53 V at 10 mA cm-2) and long-term stability (at 300 mA cm-2). Moreover, our results reveal the apparent reconstruction properties of V-CoFe-MOF/NF in alkaline electrolytes, where the partially dissolved V promotes the formation of more active β-MOOH. The mechanism study shows the OER mechanism shifts to a lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) after V doping, which directly avoids complex multistep adsorption mechanism and reduces reaction energy. This study provides a cation mediated strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are class of promising heterogeneous catalysis, but usually not directly employed for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to manipulating difficultly their composition and morphology. Herein, we present a facile one-pot solvothermal method to successfully synthesize diverse bimetallic organic framework {[MFe(tda)(H2O)]n (M = Mn/Co/Ni), tda = thiodiacetate}. Significantly, the morphology of [MFe(tda)(H2O)]n can be efficiently changed by regulating metal components. Among them, [NiFe(tda)(H2O)]n with unique pompon-like architecture not only can be directly used as electrocatalyst, but also delivers extraordinary OER performance with low overpotential of 264 mV at current density of 10 mA cm-2 in O2-saturated 1 M KOH solution, low Tafel slope of 53.9 mV dec- 1, and high durability after long-term testing. In addition, the effect of mixed ligands and metal ratio on morphology has also been investigated, which demonstrates the hierarchical structure of prepared materials plays a crucial role in enhancing OER activity.

Abstract:A two‐dimensional cobalt‐based metal–organic framework with Mn doped has been prepared as efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalyst. The obtained Co3Mn1 BDC exhibits excellent activity and supervisor durability with a low overpotential and favorable kinetics. Developing an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is the footstone of many electrochemical energy conversion devices. Herein, a cobalt–manganese bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF) is developed as an efficient OER catalyst (denoted as Co3Mn1 BDC). The Co3Mn1 BDC nanosheets demonstrate advantages in specific surface area, pore size distribution comparing with monometallic Co BDC and Mn BDC. The performance investigations demonstrate that the doping of Mn in Co‐based MOFs facilitates the electrochemical area, charge transfer efficiency, reaction kinetics, and turnover frequency. As a consequence, the Co3Mn1 BDC exhibits a low overpotential of 289 mV at current of 10 mA cm−2 and a favorable Tafel slope of 56.8 mV dec−1 on glassy carbon electrode, which is better than IrO2. When the catalyst is loaded on Ni foam, the overpotential and Tafel slope are further decreased to 231 mV and 50.8 mV dec−1. Moreover, the Raman spectrum confirms that the Co3Mn1 BDC can be transformed into active CoOOH, suggesting the bright prospect in electrocatalysis devices as "precatalyst".

Abstract:A series of semiconductive cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOFs) are prepared in this work using 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene (HATP) as ligand and diverse metal ions as the second coordination centers (M = Mn, Ni, and Zn) (denoted as CoxM3-x(HITP)(2) MOFs). The series of bimetallic CoxM3-x(HITP)(2) MOFs exhibit ultrathin graphene-like nanostructure, highly d-pi conjugated network, large specific surface areas, and diverse metal coordination modes. Density functional theory calculations reveal the unique synergism between M (M = Mn, Ni, and Zn) and Co nodes, in which adjacent layers of M atoms can efficiently modulate the electron densities of Co atoms in Co-3(HITP)(2). As compared, CoxZn3-x(HITP)(2) MOF possesses substantially enhanced electron density around the Co atoms, dual-metal atomic sites, and rich metal coordination modes, and exhibits superior electrochemical activity. Among them, CoxZn3-x(HITP)(2) displays the outperformed electrocatalytic performances of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Particularly, CoxZn3-x(HITP)(2) shows the lowest overpotential of 210 mV and good long-term stability. This work develops an efficient strategy for designing and regulating atomically dispersed catalysts in conductive MOFs toward clean energy applications.

Abstract:Rational design of facile and low-cost efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to solve the energy crisis. Benefiting from in situ self-reconstruction from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to (oxy)hydroxides in alkaline electrolytes, MOFs have become alternative OER catalysts. Thus, Fe-doped Co-MOF nanosheets (Co-MOF/Fe) were prepared and utilized straightforwardly as OER electrocatalysts. CoFe-layered bimetallic hydroxides (CoFe-LDHs) with abundant active sites are obtained from in situ conversion of Co-MOF/Fe after etching by the KOH electrolyte, which are generally actual active species. Meanwhile, the introduction of Fe ions will also produce a synergistic effect that greatly improves the electrocatalytic OER performance. The optimized catalyst (Co-MOF/Fe10) shows exceptional OER activity (η10 = 260 mV) and excellent durability over 50 h. The outstanding OER performance of Co-MOF/Fe10 can also be reflected in the two-electrode hydrolyzer (1.57 V at 10 mA cm-2). This study offers a pathway to probe the catalytic mechanism of MOFs and the rational construction of efficient MOF-derived catalysts.

Abstract:Heteroatom doping serves as an important strategy to improve the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of transition-metal compounds, while the investigation of intrinsic active sites and mechanisms remains insufficient. In this work, a facile cation regulation strategy is reported to boost the OER activity of metal sulfides via pyrolysis of the Ni-Co bimetallic metal-organic framework. The obtained Ni-substituted CoS nanoparticles on nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (Ni-CoS/NC) catalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a small overpotential of 270 mV with a Tafel slope of 37 mV dec−1 in 1.0 mol L−1 KOH. Through a combination of spectroscopy study and theoretical computations, the activity origin is revealed at the atomic level. The Co x Ni1–x OOH serves as the real active site for the OER generated by the Ni-CoS/NC reconstruction under oxidation potential during OER. The Ni substitution results in a strong electronic interaction between the two metals, thus generating more negatively charged Co atoms and more positively charged Ni atoms in the electrocatalyst. The metal sites with regulated electronic structure exhibit enhanced surface adsorption of OOH* and reduce the OER overpotential. Meanwhile, the conductive porous carbon scaffold facilitates electron transfer, mass diffusion, and the accessibility of active sites. This work not only provides a feasible cation regulation strategy for the design of high-performance electrocatalysts for low-cost energy storage and conversion systems, but also yields fresh insight into the activity enhancement mechanisms and intrinsic active sites.

Abstract:Abstract Electron modulation presents a captivating approach to fabricate efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet it remains a challenging undertaking. In this study, we propose an effective strategy to regulate the electronic structure of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by the construction of MOF‐on‐MOF heterogeneous architectures. As a representative heterogeneous architectures, MOF‐74 on MOF‐274 hybrids are in‐situ prepared on three‐dimensional (3D) metal substrates (NiFe alloy foam (NFF)) via a two‐step self‐assembly method, resulting in MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF. Through a combination of spectroscopic and theory calculation, our study unveils the successful modulation of the electronic property of MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF. This modulation arises from the phase conjugation of the two MOFs and the synergistic effect of the multi‐metallic centers (Ni and Fe). Consequently, MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF exhibits excellent OER activity, displaying ultralow overpotentials of 198 and 223 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the 1.0 and 0.1 M KOH solutions, respectively. Engineering the Electronic Structures of Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets via Synergistic Doping of Metal Ions and Counteranions for Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets with attractive chemical and structural properties have been considered as prominent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, while the insufficient exposed active sites and low electrical conductivity of MOFs limit their electrocatalytic activity and further industrial applications. Herein, a unique strategy to remarkably boost electrocatalytic OER activity of one Ni-based MOF is developed by the simultaneous incorporation of Fe3+ ions and BF4- anions within its layer structure. The optimized electrocatalyst NiFe-MOF-BF4--0.3 NSs shows superior OER activity with a required ultralow overpotential of 237 mV at 10 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec-1, and outstanding stability in an alkaline medium. The experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results verify that the interactions between metal (M) ions and BF4- anions (defined as M···F, M = Ni or Fe) in this catalyst can adjust the adsorption abilities of oxygen intermediates and lower the free energy barrier of the potential-determining step by tailoring its electronic structure, thereby remarkably boosting its OER activity. This protocol provides new insights into surface and structure engineering of 2D MOFs, leading to greatly enhanced electrocatalytic OER performance.

Abstract:Development of high-efficiency and low-cost electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is very important for use at alkaline water electrolysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) provide a rich platform for designing multi-functional materials due to their controllable composition and ultra-high surface area. Herein, we report our findings in the development of amorphous nickel-cobalt bimetal-organic framework nanosheets with crystalline motifs via a simple "ligands hybridization engineering" strategy. These complexes' ligands contain inorganic ligands (H2O and NO3-) and organic ones, hexamethylenetetramine (HMT). Further, we investigated a series of mixed-metal with multi-ligands materials as OER catalysts to explore their possible advantages and features. It is found that the Ni doping is an effective approach for optimizing the electronic configuration, changing lattice ordering degree, and thus enhancing activities of HMT-based electrocatalysts. Also, the crystalline-amorphous boundaries of various HMT-based electrocatalyst can be easily controlled by simply changing amounts of Ni-precursor added. As a result, the optimized ultrathin (Co, 0.3Ni)-HMT nanosheets can reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at low overpotential of 330 mV with a small Tafel slope of 66 mV dec-1. Our findings show that the electronic structure changes induced by Ni doping, 2D nanosheet structure, and MOF frameworks with multi-ligands compositions play critical roles in the enhancement of the kinetically sluggish electrocatalytic OER. The present study emphasizes the importance of ligands and active metals via hybridization for exploring novel efficient electrocatalysts.

Structural transformation of highly active metal–organic framework electrocatalysts during the oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are increasingly being investigated as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Despite their promising catalytic activity, many fundamental questions concerning their structure−performance relationships—especially those regarding the roles of active species—remain to be answered. Here we show the structural transformation of a Ni0.5Co0.5-MOF-74 during the OER by operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging. We suggest that Ni0.5Co0.5OOH0.75, with abundant oxygen vacancies and high oxidation states, forms in situ and is responsible for the high OER activity observed. The ratio of Ni to Co in the bimetallic centres alters the geometric and electronic structure of as-formed active species and in turn the catalytic activity. Based on our understanding of this system, we fabricate a Ni0.9Fe0.1-MOF that delivers low overpotentials of 198 mV and 231 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and 20 mA cm−2, respectively.

Abstract:Proposing a direct pathway combining theoretical prediction with anchoring high‐valence Mo on CoMOF@NF to reveal the mechanism of the OER reaction. Systematically investigate the catalytic mechanism and the relationship between the electrocatalytic performance of Mo‐CoMOF@NF and its electronic microstructure and conductivity. Study of catalyst OER performance by quantitative components. The electrocatalyst exhibits excellent long‐term stability. Elucidating the correlation of active sites and catalytic activity in multi‐component metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is key to understanding the mechanism of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet it remains nebulous. Herein, a direct pathway combining theoretical prediction with anchoring high‐valence metals is proposed on MOFs to reveal the mechanism of the OER reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) predicts that the co‐modulation by Mo and Co atoms can enhance the conductance of CoMOF and optimize the adsorption‐free energies of the OER intermediates. Guided by the theoretical prediction, the Co‐based MOFs grown on Ni foams are doped with high valence Mo, which is used as model catalysts for the quantitative study of the composition‐dependent OER performance. With Co/Mo in the ratio of 5:1 for the highest OER activity (impressively overpotential of 324 mV at 100 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 96.07 mV dec−1) and excellent stability (maintains for 200 h at 100 mA cm−2), the catalysts in this work is superior to commercial benchmarks electrocatalysts (RuO2/NF, 420 mV, 199.12 mV dec−1). This work sheds light on the tailoring of the active sites of MOFs, which is highly correlated with the activity of the OER.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms, thrombosis and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria: Is this triad more frequent than we thought?

Abstract:Background: Chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are clonal disorders characterized by an increased risk of thrombosis and of leukemic evolution. Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare disease whose characteristic traits are intravascular hemolysis and thrombophilia. The PNH clone is classically associated with bone marrow failure syndromes and, accordingly, it is thought to expand because the remaining hematopoiesis is suppressed. Conversely, here we report the detection of a PNH population in 2 MPN patients presenting with thrombosis. Case presentation: The first case is a 72-year-old woman presenting with a portal vein thrombosis associated with leukothrombocytosis and anemia; additional investigations diagnosed a JAK2-mutated essential thrombocythemia in myelofibrotic evolution and a significant PNH population. The second case is a 75-year-old man with JAK2-mutated polycythemia vera and a long history of thrombosis, who was found to carry a small PNH clone. Both our patients have experienced severe thrombotic events, while neither of them has ever reported signs of overt hemolysis. Conclusions: These cases defy the most accepted etiopathogenetic theory for PNH, challenge the classical indications for PNH screening and raise several practical questions, such as the clinical significance of small PNH clones and the management of patients with two pro-thrombotic factors with different etiologies. Abstract:The results of 100 bronchial brushings and 80 percutaneous needle aspiration biopsies of the lung performed in the same department were analyzed for their accuracy in the diagnosis of pulmonary neoplasms. While both procedures have a high degree of reliability, the aspiration needle biopsy appears to be the procedure of choice in smaller, more peripheral lesions, in Pancoast tumors, and whenever a metastatic neoplasm is suspected.

Abstract:A simple self‐templated design strategy is established to obtain two kinds of ternary metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), CoCu‐NiMOF nanosheets (MNs) and microflowers (MFs), which demonstrate the excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance based on the Co–Cu concerted active sites, along with a strong synergistic effect of Ni node, thereby accelerating the OER catalytic rate. Multivariate metal–organic framework (MOF) is an ideal electrocatalytic material due to the synergistic effect of multiple metal active sites. In this study, a series of ternary M‐NiMOF (M = Co, Cu) through a simple self‐templated strategy that the Co/Cu MOF isomorphically grows in situ on the surface of NiMOF is designed. Owing to the electron rearrange of adjacent metals, the ternary CoCu‐NiMOFs demonstrate the improved intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. At optimized conditions, the ternary Co3Cu‐Ni2MOFs nanosheets give the excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of current density of 10 mA cm−2 at low overpotential of 288 mV with a Tafel slope of 87 mV dec−1, which is superior to that of bimetallic nanosheet and ternary microflowers. The low free energy change of potential‐determining step identifies that the OER process is favorable at Cu–Co concerted sites along with strong synergistic effect of Ni nodes. Partially oxidized metal sites also reduce the electron density, thus accelerating the OER catalytic rate. The self‐templated strategy provides a universal tool to design multivariate MOF electrocatalysts for highly efficient energy transduction.

Abstract:For the development of energy storage and conversion, it is essential to explore high performance bifunctional catalysts with oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR and OER). Two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with abundant exposed active sites have great potential as catalyst materials with high electrocatalytic activity. Herein, a sequence of 2D MOF (TMN2O2, TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) structures with 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene and 2,3,6,7,10,11-triphenylenehexamine were designed and investigated for their catalytic performance in ORR and OER by using density functional theory. Calculation results reveal that TMN2O2 (TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) structures have superior thermodynamic and electrochemical stability during the electrocatalytic process. Based on oxygen and water molecule activation and free energy calculations, the CoN2O2 structure exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance for ORR and OER with low overpotential values of 0.33 and 0.30 V, respectively. The high bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for OER/ORR can be attributed to the moderate adsorption interaction of CoN2O2 structure with key intermediates. The valence orbital contribution of Co-3dz2 is critical for adjusting the interaction with the *OOH intermediate, resulting in enhancing the electrocatalytic performance for both ORR and OER.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and high-performance catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential to improve the efficiency of electrochemical conversion devices. Unfortunately, current studies greatly depend on empirical exploration and ignore the inherent relationship between electronic structure and catalytic activity, which impedes the rational design of high-efficiency OER catalysts. Herein, a series of bimetallic Ni-based metal-organic frameworks (Ni-M-MOFs, M = Fe, Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn) with well-defined morphology and active sites are selected as the ideal platform to explore the electronic-structure/catalytic-activity relationship. By integrating density-functional theory calculations and experimental measurements, a volcano-shaped relationship between electronic properties (d-band center and eg filling) and OER activity is demonstrated, in which the NiFe-MOF with the optimized energy level and electronic structure situated closer to the volcano summit. It delivers ultra-low overpotentials of 215 and 297 mV for 10 and 500 mA cm−2, respectively. The identified electronic-structure/catalytic activity relationship is found to be universal for other Ni-based MOF catalysts (e.g., Ni-M-BDC-NH2, Ni-M-BTC, Ni-M-NDC, Ni-M-DOBDC, and Ni-M-PYDC). This work widens the applicability of d band center and eg filling descriptors to activity prediction of MOF-based electrocatalysts, providing an insightful perspective to design highly efficient OER catalysts.

Enhancing Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance of Metal-Organic Frameworks through Cathode Activation

Abstract:Due to their abundant active sites and porous structures, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered significant interest as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Nevertheless, the development of MOF s-based electrocatalysts with efficient OER activity and excellent stability simultaneously still face challenges. Herein, a cathodic activation strategy was used to enhance the OER electrocatalytic performance of M-HHTP for the first time, where M refers to Ni, Cu, Co, Fe, while HHTP denotes 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11-hexahydroxytriphenylene. As a prototype, the activated Ni-HHTP (HA-Ni-HHTP) demonstrates outstanding OER performance, with an overpotential as low as 140 mV at 20 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 78.7 mV-1, surpassing commercial RuO2 and rivaling state-of-the-art MOFs-based electrocatalysts. Characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that the superior performance of HA-Ni-HHTP is primarily ascribed to changes in semiconductor type, contact angle, and oxygen vacancy content induced by cathodic activation. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis using the transmission line model confirms that cathodic activation accelerates charge transport, enhancing the OER process. Furthermore, the cathodic activation strategy holds promise for improving the water oxidation performance of other MOFs such as Fe-HHTP, Co-HHTP, and Cu-HHTP.

Abstract:The modulation of morphological structure associated with the change of metal composition within metal organic framework (MOF) is a facile and effective strategy to accelerate the charge transfer for enhancing the catalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, we realized the morphological change of MOF by manipulating the Co composition within bimetallic CoxFe1-x-MOF. Impressively, the CoxFe1-x-MOFs with the one-dimensional nanorod array structure promoted the reaction kinetics of the catalysts. The optimized Co0.8Fe0.2-MOF composition showed a low overpotential of 237 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and a small Tafel slope of 36.3 mV/dec, which are superior than those of commercially RuO2 electrocatalysts.
