Abstract:Biomimetic nanostructured materials with iridescent structural colors have attracted great attention due to their potential in photonic devices, materials science, and biomedical engineering. The technological applications of artificial photonic crystals (PCs), however, are often hindered by their low color visibility. Herein, we report colloidal PCs with enhanced color visibility through the coassembly of thioglycerol-modified graphene quantum dots (GQDs) into the close-packed array of polystyrene (PS) nanospheres. The enhanced polystyrene PCs were fabricated by both centrifugal sedimentation and drop-casting methods. The color visibility of the resulting PCs was found to be strongly dependent on the hydrothermal time (i.e., carbonization) and the doping concentrations of GQDs. The PCs with brilliant reflection colors with red, green and blue (RGB) regions have been achieved by controlling the size of the constituent PS nanoparticles. As a proof of concept for photonic ink applications, we demonstrated a number of photonic images with RGB colors on multiple substrates including paper, silicon wafer and glass. This work is expected to provide new insight into the development of emerging advanced photonic crystals with high color visibility for applications such as colloidal paints, textile fabrics, and wearable displays.

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs), which generate vivid colors from periodic physical structures, have attracted considerable attention. However, it is still highly challenging to produce large-scale PC films with high mechanical performance. To address the challenge, a new strategy to fabricate PC films from soft structured latex particles instead of widely used hard particles is reported. The soft latex particles are designed to have a three-layer structure: a responsive poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) corona, hard polystyrene (PSt) shell and soft poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PnBA) core. Such latex particles with easily-tunable and well-defined structures are synthesized from RAFT emulsion polymerization. Thanks to the softness, PCs can be easily achieved by latex casting on various substrates without pre-treatment, leading to a dense, crack-free, and mechanically robust PC film. The as-prepared PC films of the particles with PnBA around 55 wt% can generate vivid colors when the "inks" of water and hydrophilic liquids are applied. The full colors can be achieved by tuning particle size or pH value. Taking advantage of the responsive properties to hydrophilic liquids with different volatilities, both temporary and permanent patterns can be constructed on the PC films, leading to spatio-temporal colorful patterns. The method is simple, scalable-up, and versatile, showing great potentials for practical applications.

Abstract:Responsive photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted much attention due to their broad applications in the field of chemical and physical sensing through varying optical properties when exposed to external stimuli. In particular, assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) has proven to be a robust platform for constructing PCs in the form of films or bulk. Here, the generation of BCPs photonic microspheres is presented with 3D periodical concentric lamellar structures through confined self-assembly. The structural color of the spherical PCs can be tuned by selective swelling of one block, yielding large change of optical property through varying both layer thickness and refraction index of the domains. The as-formed spherical PCs demonstrate large reflection wavelength shift (approximate to 400-700 nm) under organic solvent permeation and pH adjustment. Spherical shape and structural symmetry endow the formed spherical PCs with rotation independence and monochrome, which is potentially useful in the fields of displays, sensing, and diagnostics.

Abstract:Responsive photonic crystals (PCs) with a nanoscale band gap assembled by colloidal nanospheres have been increasingly utilized in detection and sensing devices owing to their attractive ability to change color in response to external conditions. However, most of the reported works have been dedicated to single-functional PCs, which can only be used as sensors or detectors in a specific situation. Thus, producing a multi-functional PC for various industrial applications remains a challenge. In this work, multi-functional soft PC films (SPCFs) with a brilliant structural color and a robust structure are fabricated by using polystyrene@poly(methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) [PS@P(MMA-BA)] nanospheres with size in the range of 200–350 nm as building blocks. The SPCFs possess both the mechanochromic and solvatochromic properties owing to the adjustable photonic band gap under stress and polar solvent conditions. The mechanochromic effect of the SPCF under stretching results in a blue shift of the structural color due to the decrease in lattice spacing. In contrast, the solvatochromic mechanism of the SPCF is that it can be swollen by polar solvents, resulting in the increase in the lattice spacing of PCs and a red shift of the structural color. Meanwhile, the SPCF can keep its original structural color while stretched for 20 cycles or when the organic solvent is completely evaporated. Therefore, robust multi-functional SPCFs fabricated by the self-assembly of PS@P(MMA-BA) nanospheres under gravity sedimentation can respond to stress and organic solvents, showing great potential for use in sensors and detectors.

Flexible self-supporting photonic crystals: Fabrications and responsive structural colors

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs) play an increasingly significant role in anti-counterfeiting, sensors, displays, and other fields due to their tunable structural colors produced by light manipulation of photonic stop bands. Flexible self-supporting photonic crystals (FSPCs) eliminate the requirement for conventional structures to rely on the existence of hard substrates, as well as the problem of poor mechanical qualities caused by the stiffness of the building blocks. Meanwhile, diverse production techniques and materials provide FSPCs with varied stimulus-responsive color-changing capacities, thus they have received an abundance of focus. This review summarizes the preparation strategies and variable structural colors of FSPCs. First, a series of preparation strategies by integrating polymers with PCs are summarized, including assembly of colloidal spheres on flexible substrates, polymer packaging, polymer-based direct assembly, nanoimprinting, and 3D printing. Subsequently, variable structural colors of FSPCs with different stimulations, such as viewing angle, chemical stimulation (solvents, ions, pH, biomolecules, etc.), temperature, mechanical/magnetic stress, and light, are described in detail. Finally, the outlook and challenges regarding FSPCs are presented, and several potential directions for their fabrication and application are discussed. It's believed that FSPCs will be a valuable platform for advancing the practical implementation of optical metamaterials.

Abstract:Multifunctional photonic crystals with remarkable mechanochromic, thermochromic, solvatochromic, color/shape‐recordable, self‐healable, and adhesive functions have been fabricated by non‐close‐assembling silica particles into the unique commercially available 2‐[[(Butylamino)carbonyl]oxy]ethyl acrylate with abundant stimuli‐responsive and chemical/physical properties. These functions result in interesting emerging applications of photonic crystals, including multilayer optical filters, inkless printing, reconfigurable multicolor patterns, stretching‐based anti‐counterfeiting, etc. Fabricating photonic crystals (PCs) with dynamic multi‐stimuli‐responsive structural colors, recordable colors, and self‐healable properties is significant for their emerging applications, yet remains a big challenge. Here, an all‐in‐one multifunctional PC (MFPC) film with outstanding mechanochromic, thermochromic, solvatochromic, color/shape‐recordable, self‐healable, and adhesive functions is designed and prepared by simply non‐close‐assembling silica particles into the unique 2‐[[(Butylamino)carbonyl]oxy]ethyl acrylate (BCOEA) followed by photopolymerization. The success is mainly due to the rational combination of non‐close‐packing structures and BCOEA's characteristics, including its urethane groups with numerous sacrificial hydrogen bonds, temperature‐dependent refractive index, swellable and deformable polymer network, as well as low glass‐transition temperature. The MFPC's hue and color saturation can be reversibly and dynamically modulated by strain/pressure/solvents and temperature, respectively, thereby realizing visually and spectrally sensing these stimuli. More interestingly, the color‐responsiveness combined with other functions endows MFPCs with fascinating emerging applications, including multilayer optical filters, inkless printing, reconfigurable multicolor patterns, stretching‐based anti‐counterfeiting, etc. This work offers a new perspective for designing next‐generation smart photonic materials and will facilitate their all‐round applications.

Abstract:In nature, many species can protect themselves and communicate with peers by changing their body color, which innovates the significant applications of the color variation in security, communication as well as other visual areas. Electrically responsive photonic crystals (PCs) are the most promising tunable photonic systems to imitate the nature and to apply in real technological applications. Recently many electrically responsive PCs have been demonstrated and show great advantages for versatile optical devices. According to the design strategies of the electrically responsive PCs, they are classified into four categories: (1) electrophoretic organization of recyclable colloidal systems, (2) electroactive materials induced colloidal crystal lattice constant variation, (3) inverse opals made from electrically responsive materials and (4) electrically recyclable infiltration in porous photonic structures. In this Review, the design and fabrication of the electrically responsive PCs for functional optical devices are covered and the next steps for this important field are described.
Ultra‐Fast Fabrication of Mechanical‐Water‐Responsive Color‐Changing Photonic Crystals Elastomers and 3D Complex Devices

Abstract:This study communicates a novel approach to fabricating photonic elastomers using photonic ink infused with SiNPs. The resulting elastomers demonstrate responsive color changes under mechanical stress and upon water interaction. The fabrication of macroscopic photonic crystal devices with complex geometries is precisely controlled via a DLP‐based 3D printing technique. The traditional fabrication of opal‐structured photonic crystals is constrained by the rate of solvent evaporation, a process that is not only time‐consuming but also labor‐intensive. This study introduces a paradigm shift by incorporating silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) with high zeta potentials and hydrogen bonding capabilities into an elastomeric matrix, resulting in a novel non‐close‐packed structure. This innovation circumvents the limitations of conventional methods by enabling the rapid formation of photonic inks (PI) into vibrant and luminous photonic elastomers (PEs) within seconds. These PEs demonstrate remarkable mechanochromic properties, exhibiting dynamic color changes across the visible spectrum in response to tensile and compressive deformations. Furthermore, the presence of hydroxyl groups endows the PEs with superior water‐responsiveness, which can be finely tuned through the ink formulation. The elimination of solvent evaporation dependency facilitates the fabrication of macroscopic photonic crystal devices with complex geometries using digital light processing (DLP)‐based 3D printing. This approach ensures exceptional optical performance and high customization potential. The resulting PEs hold significant promise for applications in smart wearables, soft robotics, and advanced human‐machine interface technologies.

Abstract:Electrochromic photonic crystals (PCs) have been intensively studied in the field of display, sensors, and intelligent materials due to their tunable brilliant structural colors. The mostly studied electrochromic PCs are based on the tunable lattice parameter after electrifying; namely, the electrochromic process is caused by the structural change of PCs. Besides the lattice parameter, the refractive index is another key factor to determine the structural color of PCs. Here, a kind of hollow-SiO2-supported WO3 (H-SiO2/WO3) PCs is designed, where the refractive index of the WO3 portion is changeable under charging. Benefiting from the support effect and tunable thickness of H-SiO2, large-area PC samples with good surface morphology and bright multicolor output are prepared. The reflection peaks of these composite PCs can shift by 30-90 nm, and their corresponding colors changed obviously after the voltage was applied. After being pixelated by laser-marking, the H-SiO2/WO3 PCs can dynamically display different numeric and alphabetic patterns in an electric-driven writing and erasing process. Not only does this composite PC structure broaden the color change range of WO3-based materials but also avoids the structural change in the electrochromic process. This work provides more possibilities for electrochromic PCs in the field of color-changing pattern displays.

Abstract:Responsive photonic crystals (PCs), which can adjust structural colors in response to external stimuli, show great potential applications in displays, sensors, wearable electronics, encryption, and anticounterfeiting. In contrast, conventional structure-intrusive adjustment manners that external stimuli directly interact with the ordered arrays may lead to structural damage or longer response time. Here, a noninvasive adjustment of the structural colors of two-dimensional (2D) PCs (2D-PCs) is explored based upon diffraction theory. Sealed 2D-PCs and 2D inverse opal photonic crystal (IOPC) flexible devices are prepared. They are highly transparent in air but immediately exhibit intense viewing angle-dependent structural colors after being dipped in water. The mechanism of transparent-iridescent immediate transformation is explained by Bragg's law. The design mechanism is examined by numerical simulation and spectral shifts in different external media. We demonstrate its applications in the fields of information encryption and anticounterfeiting by using the transparent-iridescent immediate transformation of sealed 2D-PC patterns and 2D IOPC free-standing films sealed on the product surface. Because of the strong contrast between transparency and intense iridescence, reversible and immediate transformation, and durability, sealed 2D-PCs and 2D IOPC flexible devices designed by the noninvasive adjustment strategy will lead to a variety of new applications in displays, sensors, wearable electronics, encryption, and anticounterfeiting.
Controllable Radical Polymerization of Selenide Functionalized Vinyl Monomers and Its Application in Redox Responsive Photonic Crystals

Abstract:Selenium-containing monomer (p-phenylseleno) styrene (p-PhSeSt) is polymerized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. Polymer, (P(p-PhSeSt)), with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight is obtained. The selenide moiety in obtained P(p-PhSeSt) can be selectively oxidized to selenoxide or selenone groups by H2 O2 or NaClO, respectively. These oxidized groups can be further reduced to selenide by Na2 S2 O4 . The structure changing of polymers during such redox cycle is characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and size exclusion chromatography. Properties, such as thermal performance, glass transition temperature, water contact angles, and refractive indices, of the resulting polymers are systematically investigated before and after oxidation. In addition, SiO2 inverse opal photonic crystal (IOPC) is fabricated by sacrificial polymer colloidal template method. Owing to changes of the RIs of P(p-PhSeSt) after selective oxidation, the predictable change of PC bandgap as a redox-responsive PC sensor is successfully realized, which provides new perspectives for modulating photonic crystals.
Reversible Photochromic Photonic Crystal Device with Dual Structural Colors

Abstract:attention in anticounterfeiting for their manipulated light emission and iridescent structural color, but their large-scale three-dimensional fabrication is still limited by poor mechanical strength and microstructural defects. Herein, colloidal nanospheres incorporated with photoluminescent dye were assembled to three-dimensional PC-LE devices through a large-scale compressing-induced strategy, which realized dual iridescent and reversible photochromic colors. Periodically distributed refractive indices between molten molecular chains and cross-linked nanospheres generated the iridescent structural color. Subsequently, the device surface reflected another different structural color after partially removing the surface molecular chains by etching. The light emission intensity of the dye was sufficient to obtain the reversible photochromic colors. Simultaneously, the manipulation toward light emission of the photonic band gap achieved the shape of the photoluminescent intenstiy spectra that varied in accordance with the reflective peak. Furthermore, by use of screen-printing tools and transparent masking glue, the etching process became an inkless color printing process, generating a colorful bar code (2 cm ?? 2 cm) on the device surface. The code was reversibly displayed and encrypted through control of the reflection and emission of light. Significantly, the PC-LE devices opened up a new route for advanced display, color printing, and anticounterfeiting stickers.

Abstract:Patterned photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted considerable attention due to their great potential in practical applications. Direct writing is an important and convenient method to fabricate patterned PCs. However, due to the limited interaction among spheres and the evaporation of ink, the obtained patterns usually suffer from poor structure strength, and non-uniform and unstable structural colors. In this work, an in situ embedding and locking strategy for fabricating tough PC patterns in one step was demonstrated. With properly dried polymer films as "paper" and dispersions of CdS spheres as "inks" to write on the "paper", the self-assembly of CdS spheres and locking of the PC structure can be achieved simultaneously, which gives rise to tough composite patterned PCs with uniform, stable and permanent structural colors. Based on this simple method, tough PC patterns can be easily and quickly created by direct hand writing or drawing without special treatment, equipment, masks or templates. The vivid structural colors of the tough PC patterns and this simple method show great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Nature provides abundant photonic structures which give a great inspiration on the synthesis of stimuli-responsive photonic crystals (PCs) with unique structures. However, the intrinsic effects of microstructures on the responsive properties of the hierarchical PCs are still not clear. Herein, the relationship between the photonic structures and the responsive properties is investigated by choosing three natural photonic structures replicated from templates, Morpho Menelaus and Morpho peleides both with a 1D tree-like hierarchical structure while having eight and four layers, respectively and Papilio paris, with an eight layered 1D concave structure. Humidity responsive PCs were prepared by in-situ polymerizing polyacrylamide (PAAm) onto the surface of the butterfly wing scales. The 1D concave (Papilio paris) structured PCs exhibited a higher humidity sensitivity: a wavelength redshift of 92 nm when the relative humidity rose from 11 to 97 %, as compared with the Morpho menelaus PCs, which have about 70 nm redshift for the same rise of the relative humidity. The eight layer 1D tree-like structured Morpho menelaus PCs had a higher reflectance intensity. The results were also supported by a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. This work paves a new avenue to design responsive PCs with a diversity of structures from nature and controllable responsive properties.
Versatile Double Bandgap Photonic Crystals of High Color Saturation

Abstract:Double bandgap photonic crystals (PCs) exhibit significant potential for applications in various color display-related fields. However, they show low color saturation and inadequate color modulation capabilities. This study presents a viable approach to the fabrication of double bandgap photonic inks diffracting typical secondary colors and other composite colors by simply mixing two photonic nanochains (PNCs) of different primary colors as pigments in an appropriate percentage following the conventional RGB color matching method. In this approach, the PNCs are magnetically responsive and display three primary colors that can be synthesized by combining hydrogen bond-guided and magnetic field (H)-assisted template polymerization. The as-prepared double bandgap photonic inks present high color saturation due to the fixed and narrow full-width at half-maxima of the parent PNCs with a suitable chain length. Furthermore, they can be used to easily produce a flexible double bandgap PC film by embedding the PNCs into a gel, such as polyacrylamide, facilitating fast steady display performance without the requirement of an external magnetic field. This research not only presents the unique advantages of PNCs in constructing multi-bandgap PCs but also establishes the feasibility of utilizing PNCs in practical applications within the fields of anti-counterfeiting and flexible wearable devices.
