Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs), which generate vivid colors from periodic physical structures, have attracted considerable attention. However, it is still highly challenging to produce large-scale PC films with high mechanical performance. To address the challenge, a new strategy to fabricate PC films from soft structured latex particles instead of widely used hard particles is reported. The soft latex particles are designed to have a three-layer structure: a responsive poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) corona, hard polystyrene (PSt) shell and soft poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PnBA) core. Such latex particles with easily-tunable and well-defined structures are synthesized from RAFT emulsion polymerization. Thanks to the softness, PCs can be easily achieved by latex casting on various substrates without pre-treatment, leading to a dense, crack-free, and mechanically robust PC film. The as-prepared PC films of the particles with PnBA around 55 wt% can generate vivid colors when the "inks" of water and hydrophilic liquids are applied. The full colors can be achieved by tuning particle size or pH value. Taking advantage of the responsive properties to hydrophilic liquids with different volatilities, both temporary and permanent patterns can be constructed on the PC films, leading to spatio-temporal colorful patterns. The method is simple, scalable-up, and versatile, showing great potentials for practical applications.

Abstract:Responsive photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted much attention due to their broad applications in the field of chemical and physical sensing through varying optical properties when exposed to external stimuli. In particular, assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) has proven to be a robust platform for constructing PCs in the form of films or bulk. Here, the generation of BCPs photonic microspheres is presented with 3D periodical concentric lamellar structures through confined self-assembly. The structural color of the spherical PCs can be tuned by selective swelling of one block, yielding large change of optical property through varying both layer thickness and refraction index of the domains. The as-formed spherical PCs demonstrate large reflection wavelength shift (approximate to 400-700 nm) under organic solvent permeation and pH adjustment. Spherical shape and structural symmetry endow the formed spherical PCs with rotation independence and monochrome, which is potentially useful in the fields of displays, sensing, and diagnostics.

Abstract:Tunable photonic crystals (TPCs) reflecting selected wavelengths of visible light and responding to external stimuli are widely applied to fabricate smart optical devices. Chiral nematic liquid crystals (CNLCs) possessing response to temperature, electric field, and magnetic field are considered as one-dimensional TPCs. The encapsulation of CNLCs provides responsive photonic devices with stand-alone macroscopic structure and excellent processability. However, when CNLCs as cores are wrapped by polymeric shells to form core-shell structured microcapsules, the polydispersity of microcapsule size, the irregular spatial geometry, and the low thermal stability inevitably result in a deterioration of the optical performance and limited application at high temperatures. Herein, a combination of microfluidic emulsification and interfacial polymerization is employed to fabricate polymer wrapped photonic crystalline microcapsules (PWPCMs). The sizes and reflected colors of PWPCMs can be simultaneously controlled by adjusting the flow rates in the microfluidic chips. PWPCMs possess strictly monodispersed sizes with coefficients of variation less than 1%. The free-standing PWPCMs have high thermal stability. The deformation temperature of PWPCMs is as high as 210 °C. The colored PWPCMs also exhibit a reversible thermochromic property between the chiral nematic phase and the isotropic phase. The highly stable and tunable PWPCMs provide new opportunities for a wide range of photonic applications, including smart optical window, tunable microlasers, responsive microsensors, and various photonic devices.
Biomimetic Colloidal Photonic Crystals by Coassembly of Polystyrene Nanoparticles and Graphene Quantum Dots

Abstract:Biomimetic nanostructured materials with iridescent structural colors have attracted great attention due to their potential in photonic devices, materials science, and biomedical engineering. The technological applications of artificial photonic crystals (PCs), however, are often hindered by their low color visibility. Herein, we report colloidal PCs with enhanced color visibility through the coassembly of thioglycerol-modified graphene quantum dots (GQDs) into the close-packed array of polystyrene (PS) nanospheres. The enhanced polystyrene PCs were fabricated by both centrifugal sedimentation and drop-casting methods. The color visibility of the resulting PCs was found to be strongly dependent on the hydrothermal time (i.e., carbonization) and the doping concentrations of GQDs. The PCs with brilliant reflection colors with red, green and blue (RGB) regions have been achieved by controlling the size of the constituent PS nanoparticles. As a proof of concept for photonic ink applications, we demonstrated a number of photonic images with RGB colors on multiple substrates including paper, silicon wafer and glass. This work is expected to provide new insight into the development of emerging advanced photonic crystals with high color visibility for applications such as colloidal paints, textile fabrics, and wearable displays.
Responsive Photonic Crystal Microcapsules of Block Copolymers with Enhanced Monochromaticity

Abstract:Self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) has been developed as a promising approach for constructing photonic crystal (PC) microspheres for dynamic optical modulation. However, high curvature in the center of microspheres usually distorts the periodic core structure, leading to an inconsistency of photonic bandgap and poor monochromaticity of structural color. Herein, we report a simple yet robust strategy for fabricating responsive PC microcapsules of polystyrene-<i>b</i>-poly(2-vinylpyridine) through self-emulsification strategy. Interestingly, the microcapsules exhibit bright structural color with significantly enhanced monochromaticity, compared to their solid counterpart, since the microcapsules have no irregular cores. The structural colors of the PC microcapsules not only exhibit a variability through binary mixing of BCPs but also show a responsiveness to pH value. Electrically Tunable Block Copolymer Photonic Crystals with a Full Color Display

Abstract:Electrically tunable full color display photonic crystals (PCs) made of a thin film of block copolymer, polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP), have been developed. The phase separation of PS and P2VP blocks leads to a one-dimensional periodic lamellar structure parallel to the surface of the thin film. In a solvent mixture of water and ethanol, each P2VP layer is swollen and partially charged. Applying a low voltage (<2.5 V) to such a thin film can lead to the repeatable expansion or contraction of each P2VP layer, depending on the direction and strength of the electrical potential. Such a variation of the lamellar periodicity leads to a full color display over a wide range from ultraviolet to near infrared. The advantages of such PCs are their facile preparation, low driving voltage and good durability, which make them potentially useful in information technologies.

Abstract:In nature, many species can protect themselves and communicate with peers by changing their body color, which innovates the significant applications of the color variation in security, communication as well as other visual areas. Electrically responsive photonic crystals (PCs) are the most promising tunable photonic systems to imitate the nature and to apply in real technological applications. Recently many electrically responsive PCs have been demonstrated and show great advantages for versatile optical devices. According to the design strategies of the electrically responsive PCs, they are classified into four categories: (1) electrophoretic organization of recyclable colloidal systems, (2) electroactive materials induced colloidal crystal lattice constant variation, (3) inverse opals made from electrically responsive materials and (4) electrically recyclable infiltration in porous photonic structures. In this Review, the design and fabrication of the electrically responsive PCs for functional optical devices are covered and the next steps for this important field are described.

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs) are ideal candidates for reflective color pigments with high color purity and brightness due to tunable optical stop band. Herein, the generation of PC microspheres through 3D confined supramolecular assembly of block copolymers (polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine), PS-b-P2VP) and small molecules (3-n-pentadecylphenol, PDP) in emulsion droplets is demonstrated. The intrinsic structural colors of the PC microspheres are effectively regulated by tuning hydrogen-bonding interaction between P2VP blocks and PDP, where reflected color can be readily tuned across the whole visible spectrum range. Also, the effects of both PDP and homopolymer (hPS) on periodic structure and optical properties of the microspheres are investigated. Moreover, the spectral results of finite element method (FEM) simulation agree well with the variation of structural colors by tuning the periodicity in PC microspheres. The supramolecular microspheres with tunable intrinsic structural color can be potentially useful in the various practical applications including display, anti-counterfeit printing and painting.

Fast Electrically Driven Photonic Crystal Based on Charged Block Copolymer

Abstract:We have developed electrically driven photonic crystals (PCs) from a quaternized polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) block copolymer which can form a one dimensional periodic lamellar structure. The variation of applied voltage from −4.50 to +2.36 V on the PCs can lead to color display over the entire visible region with a sub-second fast response, where the periodic structure swells from 4.3 to 7 times that at dry state. The fast response is attributed to the charging of the P2VP block. Besides, the photonic crystal exhibits a reverse volatility behavior, that is, as the applied voltage increases, the reflective peak wavelength decreases. Such fast switching PCs are facilely prepared with low driving voltage and good durability. The PCs are expected to find applications in information technologies.

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs) derived from responsive polymers exhibit adjustable photonic band gaps under external stimuli, and they have abundant applications in different fields. Herein, oxidative and pH dual-responsive copolymers were synthesized using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with a functional monomer of combined phenyl vinyl sulfide (PVS) and N,N'-(dimethylamino) ethyl acrylate (DMAEA). The oxidatively responsive PVS segment generated copolymers with a refractive index (RI) change, and the pH-responsive DMAEA segment generated copolymers with a distance change in the aggregation state. Fabricating PCs with these copolymers resulted in unique dual-responsive behavior, e.g., the reflective peaks of PCs exhibited blue shifts to varying degrees under different oxidative and pH conditions. This report presents a high refractive index polymer derived from S-vinyl sulfide derivatives, in which the refractive index changed through selective oxidation and dual responsiveness was observed when the derivatives were combined with DMAEA units. Owing to changes in the RI and the period distance in PCs, a predictable change in the band gap of PCs for the aim of realizing a dual-responsive PC sensor was successfully obtained.

Abstract:A concise overview is provided about highly efficient co‐assembly strategies utilizing block copolymers and colloidal nanoparticles for the creation of photonic crystal materials with precisely tailored optical functional nanostructures and tunable colors across the entire visible spectrum. The prospects and challenges are also outlined for exploring the advanced and rich design of co‐assembly‐based photonic functional materials. Photonic materials have drawn considerable attention for a great deal of promising applications with versatile optical characteristics and functionalities. This review provides a concise overview of co‐assembly strategies for the creation of photonic crystals, offering precise control over structural colors throughout the entire visible spectrum by manipulating the interaction of light with complex micro‐nano structures. Specifically, the utilization of block copolymers (BCPs) and colloidal nanoparticles as wavelength‐scale building blocks facilitates the modulation of defined nanostructures with functionality and tailorability for diverse coloration effects. Additionally, by facilely adjusting the relative ratios, a flexible balance can be struck between photonic crystals and photonic glasses for dynamic control of arrangements. Finally, this review concludes by discussing the future outlook and challenges in advancing co‐assembly‐based photonic functional materials.

Abstract:Being one of the most fascinating multi-functional materials, photoresponsive liquid crystalline block copolymers (PLCBCs) have attracted much attention because of their light controllable properties of supramolecularly self-assembled structures. These originate from their unique features combining the advanced function of photoresponsive liquid crystalline polymers (PLCPs) with the inherent property of microphase separation of block copolymers (BCs). Benefiting from recent progresses in materials chemistry, diverse PLCBCs have been designed and synthesized by controlled polymerization using different synthetic routes and strategies. Generally, PLCBCs show different performance depending on their self-organization and molecular composition, with the PLCP blocks in the minority phase or in the majority phase. One of the most important properties of PLCBCs is supramolecular cooperative motion, resulted from the interactions between liquid crystalline elastic deformation and microphase separation, which enables them to self-assemble into regularly ordered nanostructures in bulk films with high reliability. These nanostructures contribute to improving the optical performance of polymer films by eliminating the scattering of visible light, in favor of their photonic applications. With the help of liquid crystal alignment techniques, both parallel and perpendicular patterning of nanostructures has been fabricated in macroscopic scale with excellent reproducibility and mass production, which provides nanotemplates and nanofabrication processes for preparing varieties of nanomaterials. Recent findings about PLCBCs including their synthesis, diagram of microphase separation, structure-property relationship, precise control of nanostructure as well as their applications in photonics to nanotechnology are reviewed.

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs) are nano-scale, dielectric structures with periodically varying refractive index and unique light propagation properties. Recently, PCs with tunable structural and optical characteristics under external stimuli have garnered extensive attention due to their potential application in smart optical devices. Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) can generate recoverable deformation upon exposure to external stimuli. Recent experimental studies have demonstrated the tunability of PC films on LCP substrates under thermo- and/or photo-stimuli, which was primarily attributed to the bending of the bilayers. Furthermore, based on Timoshenko's classical bimetallic model, the reflective band shift has been assumed to be proportional to the bending curvature. In this study, based on some analytical solutions that extend the classical model, we demonstrate that the band shifts are proportional to the upper-surface transversal strain that is closely connected but generally not proportional to the bending curvature of the PC/LCP bilayer. Furthermore, it is found that the incorporation of spontaneous bending in addition to spontaneous contractions in the LCP substrates can be extremely helpful for the tunability of PC. This can be achieved either by programming the liquid crystal alignment or/and by light attenuation. The optimized bilayer structures exhibit immense potential to generate large reflective band shifts, especially for relatively softer PC films on stiffer LCP substrates. Overall, our results provide useful insights on the design of tunable PCs and other stimuli-responsive bilayer structures.
Flexible self-supporting photonic crystals: Fabrications and responsive structural colors

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs) play an increasingly significant role in anti-counterfeiting, sensors, displays, and other fields due to their tunable structural colors produced by light manipulation of photonic stop bands. Flexible self-supporting photonic crystals (FSPCs) eliminate the requirement for conventional structures to rely on the existence of hard substrates, as well as the problem of poor mechanical qualities caused by the stiffness of the building blocks. Meanwhile, diverse production techniques and materials provide FSPCs with varied stimulus-responsive color-changing capacities, thus they have received an abundance of focus. This review summarizes the preparation strategies and variable structural colors of FSPCs. First, a series of preparation strategies by integrating polymers with PCs are summarized, including assembly of colloidal spheres on flexible substrates, polymer packaging, polymer-based direct assembly, nanoimprinting, and 3D printing. Subsequently, variable structural colors of FSPCs with different stimulations, such as viewing angle, chemical stimulation (solvents, ions, pH, biomolecules, etc.), temperature, mechanical/magnetic stress, and light, are described in detail. Finally, the outlook and challenges regarding FSPCs are presented, and several potential directions for their fabrication and application are discussed. It's believed that FSPCs will be a valuable platform for advancing the practical implementation of optical metamaterials.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PC) patterns with tunable and changeable nonvolatile structural colors printed from a single ink are of great interest for optical products but have rarely been reported because most inks can only output one respective structural color. Herein, we propose a facile yet effective kinetically controlled self-assembly strategy to address this challenge. An ink formulation containing supramolecular block copolymers (SBCPs) is developed. SBCP patterns were printed by direct-ink-writing followed by solvent annealing to generate different structural colors by simply controlling the annealing time. The self-assembly kinetic regime suggests that different colors result from various kinetically trapped metastable states. In turn, the variation in structural color enables "visualization" of the self-assembly dynamics. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these kinetically trapped structures exhibit different responsive color-change behaviors. In addition, this kinetic control strategy can be synergistic with thermodynamic control to extend the color range. This study provides a facile yet effective solution for well-designed PC patterns with tunable, responsive, and unfading colors printed from the simplest single-nozzle printer with a single colorless ink, presenting great potential in broad applications, including information storage, encryption, and anti-fake.

Abstract:Intelligent materials with stimulus responsiveness become the research hotspots in recent years. Liquid crystal (LC) materials with supramolecular self-assembly nanostructure and stimulus responsive properties exhibit inherent advantages in the development of the novel intelligent functional materials. Blue phases (BPs), as the LC phases with exotic fluid self-assembled 3D periodic supernanostructures and the characteristic of selective reflection of circularly polarized light in visible light range, have been regarded as one kind of the most promising candidates for smart photonic crystals. The crystallographic parameters or phase states of BPs are susceptible to various external stimulation such as temperature, light irradiation, electric field or humidity. This causes a change in the photonic band gap of BPs, which exhibits visually reflection color variance. Therefore, BPs have recently drawn vast and increasing attentions due to their external-field responsive properties and great potential applications in intelligent materials. Herein, we provide the frontier research advancements in the stimuli-responsive blue phase liquid crystalline photonic crystals. The important research results obtained on the optical, magnetic, electrical, mechanical and humidity responsiveness of BPLC photonic crystals were introduced in detail. At the end of this review, the challenges and possible development direction of this novel soft matter intelligent material are prospected briefly.

Abstract:Famous for their photoisomerization, azobenzene and its derivatives have been intensively studied as among the most fascinating advanced materials. In particular, azobenzene-containing liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP) materials show unique properties by combining the self-assembly of liquid crystals and photoresponsive performance of chromophores. Here, we highlight their intriguing properties and potential applications from photonics to photodriven motion as well as the novel nanotechnology. The photoresponsive features such as photochemical phase transition, photoinduced alignment and photo-triggered cooperative motion often result in a large modulation of the refractive index, which can be easily fixed in LCP films. This is very advantageous for their photonic applications. Upon forming connections by three-dimensional crosslinking, a large deformation can be photoinduced from the micro to the macro scale, enabling applications as photomechanical and photomobile materials to be found. Upon integrating with the microphase separation of well-defined block copolymers, they exhibit photocontrollable regular nanostructures on the macroscopic scale with excellent reproducibility and mass production, meaning they can be used as nanotemplates for nanoengineering and nanofabrication.
