Abstract:Poor rate capability, unstable cycling performance, and dendrite-induced short circuits are knotty issues that hinder the practical application of rechargeable lithium metal batteries. Separators with good electrolyte wettability and heat resistance are an attractive alternative to improve the electrochemistry performance while preventing dendrite growth by stabilizing the solid electrolyte interphase. Here, we report a multifunctional separator that addresses the above issues through a simple and scalable surface modification strategy by deposition of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticle combined with polydopamine (PDA)/polyethylenimine (PEI) on the traditional polyethylene (PE) separator. Benefiting from the abundant O, N-containing groups, and Si-O groups, the composite separator can redistribute the Li+ in the electrolyte for rapid diffusion and uniform transfer of Li+, guaranteeing the long-term stability of the Li stripping/plating process as well as preventing the dendrite growth. Meanwhile, these functional groups can act as polar sites to improve the wettability of the electrolyte. Consequently, the assembled LiFePO4/Li cells with POSS-PDA-PEI/PE multilayer separator show good electrochemical performance, including high ionic conductivity (0.77 mS/cm), high lithium-ion transference number (0.42), and the long-term cycling process with lower capacity decay (0.018% at 1 C after 1000 cycles and 0.034% at 4 C after 500 cycles). This work demonstrates the potential of composite separators for high-performance lithium metal batteries by achieving a stable electrochemical interface between the anode and cathode.
Upgrading the Separators Integrated with Desolvation and Selective Deposition toward the Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:A fluorinated polymer lithiophilic separator loaded with an anionic anchoring agent realizes the rapid transport of Li+ and guided Li directional deposition, and the in situ formation of a polymer‐fiber‐reinforced Li composite layer constrains the volume variation of the Li anode. This separator ensures the long‐term stability of Ni‐rich cathode‐based lithium‐metal and lithium‐symmetric batteries. A practical and effective approach to improve the cycle stability of high‐energy density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is to selectively regulate the growth of the lithium anode. The design of desolvation and lithiophilic structure have proved to be significant means to regulate the lithium deposition process. Here, a fluorinated polymer lithiophilic separator (LS) loaded with a metal–organic framework (MOF801) is designed, which facilitates the rapid transfer of Li+ within the separator owing to the MOF801‐anchored PF6− from the electrolyte, Li deposition is confined in the plane resulting from the polymer fiber layer rich in lithiophilic groups (C─F). The numerical simulation results confirm that LS induces a uniform electric field and Li+ concentration distribution. Visualization technology records the behavior of regular Li deposition in Li||Li and Li||Cu cells equipping LS. Therefore, LS exhibits an ultrahigh Li+ transference number (tLi+ = 0.80) and a large exchange current density (j0 = 1.963 mA cm−2). LS guarantees the stable operation of Li||Li cells for over 1000 h. In addition, the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2||Li cell equipped with LS exhibits superior rate and cycle performances owing to the formation of LiF‐rich robust SEI layers. This study provides a way forward for dendrite‐free Li anodes from the perspective of separator engineering.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries have great potential in the field of next-generation energy-storage devices owing to their high theoretical energy density. However, the polysulfide intermediates shuttling seriously result in fast capacity degradation and poor cycling stability, thus hindering their commercial applications. In this paper, we choose polyvinylidene fluoride containing polar functional groups in its polymeric chain as polymer carrier to construct the H3PW12O40 firmly and uniformly decorated nanofibers membrane by electrospinning technique. Benefiting from the feature of "electron sponges ", H3PW12O40 can act as poly-sulfide mediator to significantly facilitate the liquid-liquid reaction kinetics of polysulfides in the electrode/ separator interface. Besides, fewer cracks, pulverization and adhesion of dead lithium particles occurred in the lithium metal anode, demostrating a more homogeneous Li-ion flux distribution after using this membrane with three-dimensional network structure and abundant redox active sites. The cell with such bifunctional separator delivers a specific capacity of 966 mAh g-1 at 1.0 C, and retained a capacity of 682 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles, corresponding to an average capacity loss of 0.09% per cycle. Abstract:Functional separator which facilitates the fast transport of Li+ but obstructs the permeation of polysulfides is highly required for durable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Here, we report a facile approach to developing such functional separator by coating the commercial polypropylene separator with a unique solution-processable polymer featuring both intrinsic microporosity and ion-selective functionality. The polymer is designed with contorted and rigid backbones, which incorporates zwitterionic side chains with both sulfophilic and lithiophilic groups, to produce confined ionic channels for selective ion transport via the chemical interactions with lithium polysulfides. Therefore, when used in the cell configuration, the as-developed functional separator can not only allow the fast Li+ conduction but also obstruct the penetration of bulky polysulfides, thus resulting in obvious shuttle suppression as well as the resultant credible and stable sulfur electrochemistry. Thanks to these advantages, the Li-S batteries implementing the as-developed functional separator possess high cycling ability and decent rate performance.

Abstract:High-energy-density lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries are suffering several seemingly insurmountable barriers, including lithium dendrite formation and polysulfides shuttling. Functional separator, which bridges anode, electrolyte and cathode together, has the potential to offer a perfect solution to these concerns. Herein, we develop a functional ammoniated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber separator (APANF) which can simultaneously inhibit Li dendrite formation and polysulfides shuttling. Branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) are fixed on the electrospun PAN nanofiber mat via a chemical grafting to provide amino groups. Such strongly polar separator can well regulate the uniform Li ions distribution and induce the formation of the Li3N-rich SEI layer, resulting in an interesting 3D spherical and dendrite-free Li deposit pattern. The coulombic efficiency of resulting Li anode can be improved up to 98.8% with a low overpotential of 15 mV. Meanwhile, the separator can also serve as a block for polysulfides shutting due to the strong chemical adsorption capability of PEI, thus facilitating the capacity retention of sulfur cathode. This work provides an easy and scalable alternative to conventional polyolefin separators for solving problems in both anode and cathode of Li-S battery.

Abstract:Lithium metal is a promising candidate anode for next generation high energy density batteries. However, the Li dendrite growth results in electrode degradation and safety hazards, obstructing its practical applications. Herein, we propose a facile and effective method to build a robust ion conductive layer on the lithium metal surface. A thin coating layer containing nano-Si and poly(acrylic acid) on the surface of the conventional separator would react with lithium metal after adding electrolytes, forming a protective layer composed of the Li-Si alloy and LiPAA, which is a good Li-ion conductor. Both the Li-Li symmetric and full cells (Li-LiFePO4 and Li-S) using this modified separator exhibited much better cycle stability than those using an unmodified one. The dendrite suppression and electrochemical performance enhancement should be attributed to the unique interfacial structure modification for uniform and accelerated Li+ flux and rich lithium deposition sites. These findings suggest that the lithium interfacial properties have a huge effect on lithium stripping/plating and that the proposed strategy would provide new insights toward high energy lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The lithium (Li) metal anode is highly desirable for high-energy density batteries. During prolonged Li plating-stripping, however, dendritic Li formation and growth are probabilistically high, allowing physical contact between the two electrodes, which results in a cell short-circuit. Engineering the separator is a promising and facile way to suppress dendritic growth. When a conventional coating approach is applied, it usually sacrifices the bare separator structure and severely increases the thickness, ultimately decreasing the volumetric density. Herein, we introduce dielectric silicon oxide with the feature of bi-morphological form, i.e., backbone-covered and backbone-anchored, onto the conventional polyethylene separator without any volumetric change. These functionally vary the Li+ transference number and the ionic conductivity so as to modulate Li-ion solvation and self-scavenging of Li dendrites. The proposed separator paves the way to maximizing the full cell performance of Li/NCM622 toward practical application.

Atomic Interlamellar Ion Path in Polymeric Separator Enables Long-Life and Dendrite-Free Anode in Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Separator-lithium anode interface featured with uniform lithium-ion plating/stripping is of paramount importance for the safe operation of batteries. Lithium anode paired with traditional polyolefin separator is considerably challenged with uncontrolled formation of Li dendrites, giving rise to undesirable rate capacity and cycle life. In this work, through an electrophoretic deposition technique, hexafluoropropylene separator embedded with atomic interlamellar lithium-channel phyllosilicate clay is realized. With large absorption with electrolyte, the separator with interlamellar spacing of 1.31 ran provides abundant active sites for Li+ and enables fast transfer of lithium ions, giving rise to an ionic conductivity of 5.66 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at ambient temperature. The parallel interlayers unify the direction of Li+ flows, which leads to the uniform deposition of Li+ on the anode and effectively eliminates lithium dendrite issues in Li+ plating/stripping processes. The cell assembled with the robust polymer/clay separator is more advantageous than state-of-the-art in the literature, delivering a reversible capacity of 152 mAh g(-1) with a 98.5% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 0.5C.
A Lithium‐Affinitive Covalent Organic Polymer Network Functionalized Separator for Dendrite‐Free and High‐Durability Lithium–Sulfur Batteries under Harsh Conditions

Abstract:The modification of commercial polyolefin separators with covalent organic polymer networks enables accelerated Li─Solvent/LiPS‐solvent dissolution, enhanced lithium‐ion transport, and suppression of the shuttle effect, resulting in dendrite‐free and durable Li─S batteries. The study highlights the significance of interface modification and offers a promising approach for designing multifunctional separators in high‐energy rechargeable batteries. Lithium–Sulfur (Li─S) batteries are renowned for their high theoretical specific capacity and cost‐effectiveness. Nevertheless, their performance could be impeded by obstacles including lithium dendrite growth and lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle, particularly under harsh conditions. Herein, an economical strategy is reported for modifying polyolefin separators (PP) with covalent organic polymer networks (TPE) to alter Li solvent structure, enhance lithium‐ion transport, and suppress shuttle effects. Combining in situ/ex situ characterization and theoretical calculations, it is demonstrated that the lithiophilic groups (‐C═N‐) in the TPE@PP separator form strong interaction with lithium, facilitating the dissociation of Li─Solvent/LiPS‐solvent to release freer lithium ion and shape a stable solid electrolyte interface rich in LiF and Li3N. The polymer network serves as a "highway" that accelerates Li transport and promotes uniform nucleation behavior. Therefore, the Li|TPE@PP|CNT/S cell enables 60% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 1.0 C and exhibits stable cycling performance of 100 cycles from ‐40 to 80 °C. Moreover, the pouch cell maintains a capacity of more than 600 mA h g−1 after 30 cycles at 0 °C. This study provides a promising avenue for the application of high‐performance batteries in harsh environment from the perspective of separator engineering.

Abstract:Multifunctional modified separators have the potential to effectively regulate Li ion deposition, suppress the growth of dendrite and improve the safety of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Here, we designed a separator, constructed by co-deposition of polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) on PP separator. Due to the introduction of polar functional groups such as amine groups, PDA/PEI-3 modified separator exhibits better electrolyte wettability, higher Li ion migration number (0.9), lower energy barrier and faster ion transfer kinetics. Electrochemical tests prove that PDA/PEI-3 modified separator has achieved better cycling stability at different current density in Li//Li symmetric cells and higher CE in Li//Cu cells. Meanwhile, the Li/LFP full cells show more excellent rate performance and long cycle performance (80%). SEM and XPS also prove that modified separator has achieved homogenized Li ions flux and more uniform LiF-rich SEI layer, modified separator. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for functional separator to protect Li metal anode and improve safety performance of LMBs.

Abstract:Functionalized separator is more competitive than commercial polyolefin separator for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In this work, we design the separator modified by a composite coating layer, which is composed of Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and lithium bis(triuoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) (LLZTO-PEO/PVDF-HFP/LiTFSI, LLZTO-PPL). The LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer gives an impressive effect on dendrite inhibition of lithium metal. In comparison with commercial polyolefin separator, smaller overpotential value and better Coulombic efficiency are observed for the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Li symmetric cells and the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Cu asymmetric cells at various current densities of 0.2, 0.5, and 1 mA cm–2. Moreover, the LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer modified separator exhibits better high-rate capability and cycle performance for these cells assembled with different kinds of cathode materials (LiFePO4, LiCoO2, and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) and their counterpart of a lithium metal anode. The functionalized composite coating layer modified separator may be a more attractive candidate material for commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The separator is of great significance to alleviate the shuttle effect and dendrite growth of lithium-sulfur batteries. However, most of the current commercial separators cannot meet these requirements well. In this work, a dense metal-organic-framework (MOF) modification layer is in-situ prepared by the assistant of polydopamine on the polypropylene separators. Due to the unique structure and synergistic effect of polydopamine (PDA) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), the functional separator can not only trap the polysulfides effectively but also promote the transport of lithium ions. As a result, the battery assembled with the functional separator exhibits excellent cycle stability. The capacity remains 711 mAh·g −1 after 500 cycles at 2 C, and the capacity decay rate is as low as 0.013% per cycle. The symmetrical battery is cycled for 1,000 h at 2 mA·cm 2 (2 mAh·cm −2 ) with the plating/stripping overpotential of 20 mV. At the same time, the modification separator shows a higher lithium ion transference number (0.88), better thermal stability and electrolyte wettability than the unmodified separator.

Abstract:The lithium metal anode is widely acknowledged as the coveted "holy grail" for the forthcoming generation of high energy density batteries, given its exceptional theoretical capacity and low potential. However, the formation and growth of dendrites seriously deteriorate battery life and safety. Here, hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres modified separators are proposed to promote the application of dendrite-free lithium metal batteries. The modified layer can function not only as an ion sieve to regulate the uniform distribution of lithium-ion flux for uniform deposition but also as an anion adsorber to increase the lithium-ion transference number from 0.34 to 0.70 for suppressing dendrite nucleation and growth. Compared with the cell with a baseline separator, those with modified separators exhibit higher coulombic efficiency (97.2% over 350 cycles), better rate performance (97 mAh g-1 at 10 C), and cycle stability (90% after 250 cycles). This work provides a feasible and effective strategy for separator modification to build a dendrite-free lithium metal anode and enhance cycling performance.
Clay‐Originated Two‐Dimensional Holey Silica Separator for Dendrite‐Free Lithium Metal Anode

Abstract:Lithium metal anode is the ultimate choice to obtain next-generation high-energy-density lithium batteries, while the dendritic lithium growth owing to the unstable lithium anode/electrolyte interface largely limits its practical application. Separator is an important component in batteries and separator engineering is believed to be a tractable and effective way to address the above issue. Separators can play the role of ion redistributors to guide the transport of lithium ions and regulate the uniform electrodeposition of Li. The electrolyte wettability, thermal shrinkage resistance, and mechanical strength are of importance for separators. Here, clay-originated two-dimensional (2D) holey amorphous silica nanosheets (ASN) to develop a low-cost and eco-friendly inorganic separator is directly adopted. The ASN-based separator has higher porosity, better electrolyte wettability, much higher thermal resistance, larger lithium transference number, and ionic conductivity compared with commercial separator. The large amounts of holes and rich surface oxygen groups on the ASN guide the uniform distribution of lithium-ion flux. Consequently, the Li//Li cell with this separator shows stable lithium plating/stripping, and the corresponding Li//LiFePO<sub>4</sub> , Li//LiCoO<sub>2,</sub> and Li//NCM523 full cells also show high capacity, excellent rate performance, and outstanding cycling stability, which is much superior to that using the commercial separator.

Abstract:AbstractLithium (Li) metal is one of the most promising candidates for the anode in high‐energy‐density batteries. However, Li dendrite growth induces a significant safety concerns in these batteries. Here, a multifunctional separator through coating a thin electronic conductive film on one side of the conventional polymer separator facing the Li anode is proposed for the purpose of Li dendrite suppression and cycling stability improvement. The ultrathin Cu film on one side of the polyethylene support serves as an additional conducting agent to facilitate electrochemical stripping/deposition of Li metal with less accumulation of electrically isolated or “dead” Li. Furthermore, its electrically conductive nature guides the backside plating of Li metal and modulates the Li deposition morphology via dendrite merging. In addition, metallic Cu film coating can also improve thermal stability of the separator and enhance the safety of the batteries. Due to its unique beneficial features, this separator enables stable cycling of Li metal anode with enhanced Coulombic efficiency during extended cycles in Li metal batteries and increases the lifetime of Li metal anode by preventing short‐circuit failures even under extensive Li metal deposition.
Ten micrometer thick polyethylene separator modified by α-LiAlO2@γ-Al2O3 nanosheets for simultaneous suppression of Li dendrite growth and polysulfide shuttling in Li-S batteries

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are of considerable interest for low-cost and high-density energy storage. However, the notorious polysulfide shuttling and the undesired Li dendrite growth impel the development of Li-S batteries. To simultaneously mitigate these problems, a thin (∼10 μm) separator is herein developed by coating α-LiAlO2@γ-Al2O3 (LAO) nanosheets on the dual sides of a commercial polyethylene (PE) separator. Owing to the high anion-anchoring capability and the polysulfide absorbing and catalytic effect of LAO, LAO modified separator (LAOMS) not only suppresses the polysulfide shuttling, but also homogenizes the Li+ flux and reduces the concentration polarization. As a result, the Li-Li cell with LAOMS demonstrates an unprecedented stability over 2500 h when cycled at a high current density of 5 mA cm-2. In addition, the Li-S cell with LAOMS exhibits superior cycling lifespan with an ultra-low capacity decay of 0.037% per cycle over 1000 cycles even at 2 C, excellent rate performance, and superior anti-self-discharge capability. Our studies not only shed light on the rational design of functionalized separators for high-performance Li-S batteries, but also provide a thin separator with promising commercial perspective.

Metal‐Organic Framework Sandwiching Porous Super‐Engineering Polymeric Membranes as Anionphilic Separators for Dendrite‐free Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Based on the interfacial design and dual‐solvent‐induced synthesis strategy, a uniform, interlocked, and phase‐pure MOFs layer with anionphilic features is built on the two sides of porous super‐engineering polymeric membranes for a lithium metal battery separator. MOFs layer‐faced electrodes can act as a "Li‐ion guides" to balance the internal electric field and limit the free migration of anions, contributing to a stable lithium plating–stripping metal interface. The non‐shrinkage hybrid separator with a microporous structure also prevents resultant lithium‐metal batteries from internal short circuits, chemical crosstalk of reactive gases, as well as the associated exothermic reactions. The development of multifunctional separators can be an effective solution for solving the lithium dendrite and safety issues of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). This work reveals an interfacial reaction protocol to prepare a functional separator to regulate lithium‐ion transport and enhance the safety of LMBs. Specifically, the well‐organized anionphilic MOFs layers are in situ grafted on both sides of porous super‐engineering polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN) membranes pre‐modified with polydopamine (PDA), which leads to sandwiched MOF/PEN@PDA/MOF multifunctional separators. Electrochemical tests prove that the optimized separator acts as a "Li‐ion guides" to balance the internal electric field and limit the free migration of anions, which extends the "Sand's time" of lithium dendrite nucleation and contributes a high Li+ transfer number of 0.81. On account of the alleviated interface side reactions, the optimized battery exhibits a highly stable lithium plating–stripping cycle of over 500 h. Meanwhile, the functional separator shows better thermal stability than its conventional polypropylene counterpart. Thanks to these features, the assembled LFP/Li cells with optimized separator exhibit stable cycling performance and high coulombic efficiency of 98% even at 90 °C. The current work opens a new path to designing separators for solving the lithium dendrite and safety issues of LMBs.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal anodes have been considered as the "Holy Grail" for next-generation batteries due to their high theoretical capacity and low redox potential. However, nonuniform Li+ deposition leads to hazardous dendrite growth and poor electrochemical performance, which still severely hinders the practical applications of Li metal batteries. Herein, we propose a bifunctional composite separator to guide homogenous Li+ deposition, which smartly learns abundant experience from dendrite-free design of solid-state-batteries. A hierarchical porous composite solid-state electrolyte (CSE) consisting of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) is coated on one side of polypropylene (PP) separator to fabricate the composite separator. The interactions between PVDF and LLZTO provide a three-dimensional fast Li+ channel along the PVDF, LLZTO, and PVDF/LLZTO interface, which can effectively redistribute uneven Li+ flux coming from the insulated PP separator. In addition, the CSE layer can further immobilize the anions, regulating a facile Li+ transport to evenly deposit on the Li anode. The synergetic effects between Li+ redistribution and anion immobilization result in higher Coulombic efficiency and enhanced cycling stability for Li metal batteries. This work presents fresh insights into CSE modified PP separator, which is an effective and simple solid-state-battery strategy for protected Li metal anodes and large-scale production.

Enhancing Interfacial Lithiophilicity and Stability with PVDF/In(NO3)3 Composite Separators for Durable Lithium Metal Anodes

Abstract:Separator modification is a promising method for advancing lithium metal anodes; however, achieving homogeneous lithium-ion flux and uniform plating/stripping processes remains challenging. In this work, we introduce a novel approach by developing a composite separator, termed PVDF-INO, which integrates In(NO3)3 (INO) into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to create a 12 μm thick layer. This addition significantly enhances the interaction between the separator and the electrolyte, creating a lithophilic matrix that ensures an even distribution of lithium ions. This uniform ion distribution promotes consistent lithium deposition and dissolution, resulting in a durable, dendrite-free lithium metal anode. Moreover, the PVDF-INO separator not only enhances the affinity with electrolytes but also maintains stable lithium-ion flux, which is essential for reliable and safe battery operation. Consequently, it sustains operation over 750 h in a Li||Li symmetric battery configuration, with a low overpotential of just 28 mV. Additionally, full cells equipped with LiFePO4 cathodes and the PVDF-INO separator exhibit superior cycling performance, maintaining a capacity retention of 92.9% after 800 cycles at 1 C. This work paves the way for significant advancements in the field of lithium metal batteries, offering a promising solution to longstanding energy storage challenges.
Converting an O-vacancy-rich Oxide into a Multifunctional Separator Modifier for Long-Lifespan Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The lithium metal anode is hailed as the desired “holy grail” for the forthcoming generation of high-energy-density batteries, given its astounding theoretical capacity and low potential. Nonetheless, the formation and growth of dendrites seriously compromise battery life and safety. Herein, an yttria-stabilized bismuth oxide (YSB) layer is fabricated on the polypropylene (PP) separator, where YSB reacts with Li anode in-situ in the cell to form a multi-component composite interlayer consisting of Li3Bi, Li2O, and Y2O3. The interlayer can function not only as a redistributor to regulate Li+ distribution but also as an anion adsorber to increase the Li+ transference number from 0.37 to 0.79 for suppressing dendrite nucleation and growth. Consequently, compared with the cell with a baseline separator, those with modified separators exhibit prolonged lifespan in both Li/Li symmetrical cells and Li/Cu half-cells. Notably, the full cells coupled with ultrahigh-loading LiFePO4 display an excellent cycling performance of 1700 cycles with a high capacity retention of ∼80% at 1 C, exhibiting great potential for practical applications. This work provides a feasible and effective new strategy for separator modification towards building a much-anticipated dendrite-free Li anode and realizing long-lifespan lithium metal batteries.
