Abstract:We report the synthesis of TiO2 hierarchical spheres (THS) with large specific surface area via a facile one-pot solvothermal method. The as-prepared THS are self-assembled by ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets with thickness of several nanometers and they show a uniform spherical morphology with an average size of 500-700 nm. However, the as-prepared light yellow THS exhibit inferior photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution from water splitting due to the poor crystallization of TiO2 and the existence of oxygen vacancies. Significantly, a subsequent thermal treatment improves the crystallinity of THS, reduces the oxygen vacancies, and thereby enhances the photocatalytic performance. It demonstrates that the sample annealed at 550 degrees C (THS550) exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity, about 5 times higher than that of commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (C-TiO2). Moreover, the THS550 sample loaded with 1 wt% Pt exhibits an hydrogen evolution rate as high as 17.9 mmol h(-1)g(-1), and the corresponding apparent quantum efficiency has been determined to be 28.46% under 350 nm light irradiation. Abstract:Producing H-2 by means of direct photocatalytic water splitting using suspension system is highly desired in efficiently transforming solar energy to chemical energy. Here, using an ultrathin beta-CoOOH nanosheet as photocatalyst suspended in aqueous Na2SO3 solution, we realize highly efficient and stable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. The as-prepared ultrathin beta-CoOOH nanosheets suspension can directly photocatalyze hydrogen evolution in a high rate of 1200 mu mol/g/h and large quantum efficiencies of 10.7% at 380 nm, 6.9% at 420 nm, and 2.3% at 450 nm. X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption measurements reveal that the excellent hydrogen evolution activity of the beta-CoOOH nanosheet is attributed to the surface low-coordinated Co catalytic site, which results in a strong hybridization of Co 3d states with the S p states of SO32+, and facilitates the electron transfer to reduce H+. The results may be helpful for designing and understanding two-dimensional oxyhydroxide-based photocatalyst for hydrogen production.
A novel composite of TiO2 nanotubes with remarkably high efficiency for hydrogen production in solar-driven water splitting

Abstract:As one of the most promising photocatalysts, TiO2 suffers from disadvantages of a wide band gap energy and especially the ultrafast recombination of photoinduced-charges, which limit its practical application for efficient solar water splitting. Here we show a hitherto unreported carbon/TiO2/carbon nanotube (CTCNT) composite featuring a TiO2 nanotube sandwiched between two thin tubes of carbon with graphitic characteristics. The carbon layer is only about 1 nm thick covering the surface of TiO2 nanotubes. The minimum bandgap between the edges of band tails for the CTCNTs can conjecturally be narrowed to 0.88 eV, and the measured apparent quantum efficiency of CTCNT in the ultraviolet light region is even close to 100%, indicating it can greatly enhance the utilization of sunlight and extremely suppress charge recombination. As a consequence, under illumination of one AM 1.5G sunlight, CTCNT can give a super-high solar-driven hydrogen production rate (37.6 mmol h−1 g−1), which is much greater than the best yields ever reported for TiO2-based photocatalysts. We anticipate this work may open up new insights into the architectural design of nanostructured photocatalysts for effective capture and conversion of sunlight.

Abstract:AbstractThe facile electron–hole pair recombination in earth‐abundant transition‐metal oxides is a major limitation for the development of highly efficient hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. In this work, the thickness of a layered β‐CoOOH semiconductor that contains metal/hydroxy groups was reduced to obtain an atomically thin, two‐dimensional nanostructure. Analysis by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that electron–hole recombination is almost suppressed in the as‐prepared 1.3 nm thick β‐CoOOH nanosheet, which leads to prominent electron–hole separation efficiencies of 60–90 % upon irradiation at 350–450 nm, which are ten times higher than those of the bulk counterpart. X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and first‐principles calculations demonstrate that [HO−CoO6−x] species on the nanosheet surface promote H+ adsorption and H2 desorption. An aqueous suspension of the β‐CoOOH nanosheets exhibited a high hydrogen production rate of 160 μmol g−1 h−1 even when the system was operated for hundreds of hours.

Abstract:A fast cyclohexanol solvothermal pathway was developed to prepare highly dispersed anatase titania (TiO2) nanosheets with an edge length of ~800 nm and a thickness of ~6 nm. Under the synergistic control of hexafluorotitanic acid and cyclohexanol, the exposed 001 facets reached ~98.5% on the TiO2 nanosheets obtained by the treatment at 180 °C for 150 min. Moreover, it was found that the phase transformation and structural development drastically occurred during the solvothermal treatment. When used as a catalyst for photodegradation of rhodamine B, the TiO2 nanosheets exhibited a good recycling stability and a much higher photocatalytic degradation rate (nearly 99% degradation within 2.5 h) than the commercial P25 (93.6%). After being uniformly loaded with 4 wt.% of the Pt nanoparticles, the TiO2 nanosheets displayed a photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 2.239 mmol g−1 h−1 under simulated solar light, which was much higher than the pristine TiO2 nanosheets (0.045 mmol g−1 h−1) as well as most of the reported TiO2-based photocatalysts. The remarkable photocatalytic activity and good stability of the TiO2 nanosheets with highly exposed 001 facets would make them find potential applications in both water treatment and hydrogen generation from water splitting under solar light.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production is a promising technique for solar-to-chemical energy conversion. However, the efficiency of this method is greatly limited by the need to develop efficient photocatalysts. In this study, we rationally designed an organic–inorganic hybrid material as a photocatalyst for hydrogen production. ZnWO 4 nanosheets were fabricated via a hydrothermal reaction, before decorating with CuO nanoparticles as a co-catalyst for hydrogen evolution and tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) as a photosensitizer. The as-fabricated ZnWO 4 /CuO/TCPP obtained excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (1.84 mmol g −1 h −1 ) under the optimized reaction conditions, which was about 4.9 times higher compared with that using the pristine ZnWO 4 . This significant enhancement was ascribed to the efficient charge separation by CuO and light absorption extension by porphyrin. Thus, we demonstrated a good example of efficient hydrogen production based on the rational design of photocatalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen generation from solar water splitting has the potential to solve both environmental issues and energy crisis. This chapter begins with the discussion of the basic mechanism of photocatalytic water splitting and fundamental material requirements for particular photocatalysts. TiO2 and alkali metal titanates are first introduced as traditional UV active photocatalysts, followed by Nb2O5, Ta2O5 and their alkali metal oxides. Metal chalcogenides and oxysulfides, nitrides and oxynitrides are then presented as lower bandgap photocatalysts than the corresponding oxides. Cu2O and cobalt oxide nanoparticles are among very few binary oxides that can perform overall water splitting without co-catalysts under visible light. We will then show other newly developed visible light photocatalysts, namely, graphene oxide quantum dots, graphitic C3N4 nanostructures, and carbon-doped boron nitride nanosheets. Plasmonic nanomaterials are included as a special type of photocatalyst. The chapter concludes with discussions on current material issues, challenges and outlook for future photocatalyst development.

Abstract:The production of H2 and O2 from solar-light photocatalytic water splitting has attracted significant research attention as a clean and renewable source of energy. In this study, hydrogenated TiO2/SrTiO3 porous microspheres were prepared as a high-performance photocatalyst. Titanium glycerolate and then strontium complex precursors were first prepared via a two-step solvothermal process, then, after calcination in air and subsequent H2/Ar reduction treatments, hydrogenated TiO2/SrTiO3 porous microspheres with controllable defects and band positions were prepared. Several characterization techniques were used to demonstrate that the catalyst heterostructures, the oxygen-vacancy content, and the unique porous structures synergistically enhanced the visible-light harvesting abilities and photogenerated charge separation, and resulted in improved photocatalytic efficiency for H2 and O2 evolution. As expected, the optimum treatment conditions provided hydrogenated TiO2/SrTiO3 porous microspheres that showed excellent photocatalytic activity with H2 and O2 evolution rates of 239.97 and 103.79 μmol h−1 (50 mg catalyst, under AM 1.5 irradiation), respectively, which were ca. 5.9 and 6.6 times higher, respectively, than those of solid TiO2/SrTiO3 materials. Thus, this type of hydrogenated TiO2/SrTiO3 porous microsphere catalyst shows great potential as a photocatalyst for solar-energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Exploring efficient and economical electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction is of great significance for water splitting on an industrial scale. Tungsten oxide, WO3, has been long expected to be a promising non-precious-metal electrocatalyst for hydrogen production. However, the poor intrinsic activity of this material hampers its development. Herein, we design a highly efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst via introducing oxygen vacancies into WO3 nanosheets. Our first-principles calculations demonstrate that the gap states introduced by O vacancies make WO3 act as a degenerate semiconductor with high conductivity and desirable hydrogen adsorption free energy. Experimentally, we prepared WO3 nanosheets rich in oxygen vacancies via a liquid exfoliation, which indeed exhibits the typical character of a degenerate semiconductor. When evaluated by hydrogen evolution, the nanosheets display superior performance with a small overpotential of 38 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 38 mV dec-1. This work opens an effective route to develop conductive tungsten oxide as a potential alternative to the state-of-the-art platinum for hydrogen evolution.
Single-atomic Pt sites anchored on defective TiO2 nanosheets as a superior photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Single-atomic site catalysts have drawn considerable attention because of their maximum atom-utilization efficiency and excellent catalytic activity. In this work, a highly active single-atomic Pt site photocatalyst was synthesized through employing defective TiO2 nanosheets as solid support for photocatalytic water splitting. It indicated that the surface oxygen vacancies on defective TiO2 nanosheets could effectively stabilize the single-atomic Pt sites through constructing a three-center Ti-Pt-Ti structure. The Ti-Pt-Ti structure can hold the stability of isolated single-atomic Pt sites and facilitate the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers, thereby greatly improving the photocatalytic H2 evolution. Notably, our synthesized photocatalyst exhibited a remarkably enhanced H2 evolution performance, and the H2 production rate is up to 13460.7 μmol•h-1•g-1, which is up to around 29.0 and 4.7 times higher than those of TiO2 nanosheets and Pt nanoparticles-TiO2. In addition, a plausible enhanced reaction mechanism was also proposed combining with photo-electrochemical characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results. Ultimately, it is believed that this work highlights the benefits of a single-site catalyst and paves the way to rationally design the highly active and stable single-atomic site photocatalysts on metal oxide support.

Abstract:Exploring sustainable noble-metal-free photocatalyst still remains a huge challenge for highly efficient and durable photocatalytic H2 production. In this work, Cu3P nanosheets were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method without using any organic solvents, and red phosphorus was used as the phosphorus source. A Z-scheme Cu3P/TiO2 photocatalyst without a noble metal was rationally fabricated to achieve UV–vis harvesting. Compared to TiO2, the optimized Cu3P/TiO2 photocatalyst displays much more excellent activity with the hydrogen evolution rate of 607.5 µmol h−1 g−1, which is 30.4 folds higher than that of bare TiO2 photocatalyst under solar light irradiation. The enhancement of charge carriers separation efficiency in Cu3P/TiO2 is demonstrated by the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, transient photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Moreover, The photo-induced charge-transfer route of Cu3P/TiO2 is a Z-scheme transfer mode confirmed by selective deposition of Pt nanoparticles, the photocatalytic decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB). In the Z-scheme system, the holes are left on the TiO2, and photo-exited electron will be enriched on Cu3P nanosheets for hydrogen evolution. This work will provide more insight into fabricating eco-friendly phosphide-based catalyst with efficient photocatalytic hydrogen property and sufficient durability for solar-to-chemical conversion and utilization.

Abstract:Lowering the cost and increasing the efficiency of photocatalysts for hydrogen (H2) evolution remain challenging, especially with eco-friendly materials. With these goals in mind, in this study we adopted tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheets, a nonmetallic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) material covering P25 TiO2, for plasmon-induced resonance energy transfer (PIRET) to improve the photocarrier response of H2 evolution. Under simulated solar light irradiation, the optimized 2.4W heterostructure provided a durable and outstanding H2 evolution rate (321 mmol g-1 h-1) that was approximately 55.3 times higher than that of TiO2. Raman spectra revealed the presence of dipole-dipole interactions within the WS2-TiO2 heterostructure, while UV-Vis optical absorption spectra indicated that the WS2 absorption range overlaid the band gap of TiO2. Under irradiation with light, the SPR of the WS2 nanosheets underwent near-field dipole-dipole coupling with the excitons of TiO2 to increase the number of excitons and inhibit charge recombination. Abstract:Improving the efficiency of photocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen is currently a hot topic in research. TiO 2 nanosheets are a good carrier of photocatalytic materials and have become attractive materials in the new century because of their high active surface exposure characteristics and special morphology. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of conventional chemical and physical methods that are used for preparing TiO 2 nanosheets, an optimized scheme for the preparation of TiO 2 nanosheets via hydrothermal calcination was proposed. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV-visible diffuse reflection absorption spectra (DRS) were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the TiO 2 nanosheets, and differences in the photocatalytic water splitting hydrogen production activity of the different calcination temperatures were compared. The suitable calcination temperature of the TiO 2 nanosheets was 400°C, and the hydrogen production rate was 270 μ mol/h, which indicated that the sheet structure was beneficial for improving the photocatalytic water splitting hydrogen production performance of the material. It is hoped that this work will support the regulation of the surface morphology and surface modification of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Limiting resources of fossil fuels and environmental issues inevitably require more efficient utilization of solar energy. Photocatalytic production of hydrogen is identified as one of the most promising routes for developing clean and sustainable energy; however, engineering low-cost materials exhibiting high catalytic activity in the entire range of the solar spectrum is still a challenge. Here, for the first time, we report simple, easily scalable, and environmentally friendly synthesis of stable Ti@TiO2 core–shell nanoparticles exhibiting photocatalytic activity in hydrogen production under vis/NIR light irradiation without any noble metals. Abstract:Ultrathin CdIn2S4 nanosheets with a thickness of ~4 nm have been synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method with using the mixture of water and ethanol as solvent. The as-obtained CdIn2S4 ultrathin nanosheets possess many nanoholes with size ranges from 1.8 nm to 9 nm and exhibit efficient photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution.
