Abstract:Supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) energy storage, as an innovative compressed gas energy storage technology, has multiple advantages such as high energy storage density, economic feasibility, long operating life, and negative carbon emissions. It has great potential to serve as an ideal large-scale long-term energy storage solution to enhance the flexibility of coal-fired power units. This paper proposes a novel coal-fired power generation system coupled with an S-CO2 energy storage cycle. Accordingly, a thermodynamic model is established to assess the impacts of key parameters such as split ratio, steam turbine outlet pressure, CO2 flow rate, and intermediate pressure turbine extraction position on the thermodynamic performance by using the equilibrium analysis method. Furthermore, the optimization of different parameters is discussed. The results showed that to maintain the power generation and efficiency of coal-fired units, it is necessary to appropriately reduce the split ratio and perform extraction at position 4. Conversely, to enhance energy storage generation, it is advisable to appropriately increase the split ratio and CO2 flow rate, reduce the steam turbine exhaust pressure, and conduct extraction at position 3. According to typical conventional parameters, the boiler has the lowest efficiency and the highest heat loss, while the exergy efficiency of the low-pressure turbine (LPT) and steam turbine (ST) is also low. It is therefore necessary to focus on optimizing the parameters of the boiler, LPT, and ST in order to improve the working capacity of the system.
