Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and hybridized local and charge transfer (HLCT) emitters represent two distinct yet highly efficient classes of electroluminescent materials. However, their designs are commonly independent due to their unique mechanisms for converting cold/hot triplet excitons into singlet excitons through the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process. In this study, we propose a novel design strategy to achieve HLCT/TADF emissions using structurally similar U-shaped donor–acceptor (D–A) type molecules. Specifically, we employ different π-conjugated molecules, 9,9-dimethylxanthene (XAN) and anthracene (AN), as bridges to connect the donor (diphenylamine and carbazole, DPA/Cz) and acceptor (diphenyltriazine, TRZ). This approach allows us to regulate the through-space charge transfer (TSCT) between donor and acceptor, as well as fine-tune the proportion of locally excited (LE) states in the singlet states, thereby facilitating TADF/HLCT emissions. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the intrinsic structure-property relationships of TSCT-based TADF/HLCT molecules, offering a novel methodology for concurrently designing both HLCT and TADF materials.

Regulating Through Space Charge Transfer in Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Molecules Via Donor Architectures: Theoretical Perspective and Molecular Design

Abstract:In recent studies, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules with a through space charge transfer (TSCT) feature have attracted wide attention. Nevertheless, studies on the substitution effects on the photophysical properties of TSCT-based TADF molecules are insufficient, and the corresponding theoretical investigations and effective molecular design strategies are highly desired. Herein, in order to reveal the inner mechanisms between the substitution effects from the donor unit and the luminescent properties for TSCT-based TADF molecules, the photophysical properties of nine TSCT-based TADF molecules (including one molecule with dual configurations) are theoretically studied. Based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) coupled with the thermal vibration correlation function (TVCF) method, basic physical parameters such as geometric changes, electron-donating abilities, adiabatic singlet-triplet energy gaps, TSCT ratios, hole and electron distributions and excited state decay rates are calculated and analyzed. The relationships between molecular structures and luminescent properties are determined. Our results show that molecules with carbazole as the donor possess large oscillator strengths and transition dipole moments, and a prominent radiative decay process is determined. Moreover, molecules with phenazine as the donor present small geometric changes, strong electron-donating capability and tiny adiabatic singlet-triplet energy gap, and all these factors contribute to the effective reverse intersystem crossing process (RISC), and this feature makes these molecules promising TSCT-based TADF molecules. Furthermore, dual configurations for 2CTF molecules are determined (2CTF2.1 and 2CTF2.2), and 2CTF2.1 with a large TSCT ratio possessing a fast fluorescence decay process and high luminescence efficiency can be achieved. As for 2CTF2.2 with a small TSCT ratio, a remarkable RISC process is determined and high exciton utilization can be realized. Thus, 2CTF can be regarded as a self-doping TADF molecule and a remarkable TADF feature is detected. Our investigations provide a perspective for experimental measurements and propose an effective design strategy for efficient TSCT-based TADF molecules.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are primarily comprised of intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) molecules with small energy difference between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states. They lend extremely favorable electroluminescent performance to organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). This paper summarizes relevant issues and research efforts in the theoretical prediction of singlet- and triplet-transition energies of ICT molecules via time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The successful application of the descriptor-based optimal Hartree–Fock percentage method and the optimally tuned range-separated functional to many TADF systems represent an interesting approach to the exact prediction of the complex excited-state molecular dynamics within TDDFT.

Abstract:Balancing the rapid radiative decay process and the fast reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule remains a great challenge and efficient molecular design strategies are highly desired. Herein, from a theoretical perspective, excited state properties of three reported TADF molecules (1TICz, 1BOICz and 2BOICz) are investigated based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations coupled with the thermal vibration correlation function (TVCF) method. Results indicate that, by introducing the multi-resonance (MR) acceptor, 1BOICz possesses hybrid long-range and short-range charge transfer features, balanced small energy gap (ΔE ST ) and large oscillator strength ( f ) is obtained. Furthermore, by incorporating double equivalent MR acceptors in 2BOICz, largely enhanced f with slightly changed ΔE ST is achieved, inner mechanism for remarkable photophysical property is illustrated. Keep this strategy, seven new TADF molecules (2pDBA-bICz-1, 2pDBA-bICz-2, 2OSBA-bICz, 2DQAO-bICz, 2QAO-bICz, 2SQAO-bICz and 2OQAO-bICz) are theoretically designed, detailed physical parameters are analyzed and excited state energy consumption process is studied. Strong electrophilicity on acceptor is determined and the strength of nucleophilic sites on the bridge-phenyl of 2DQAO-bICz, 2QAO-bICz, 2SQAO-bICz and 2OQAO-bICz is increased, this promotes the short-range charge transfer property. In addition, the excitation processes for all studied molecules are dominated by long-range charge transfer from donor to acceptors, and supplemented by the short-range charge transfer on the bridge-phenyl with MR effect. Compromise energy gap and oscillator strength as well as large spin orbit coupling (SOC) constant are obtained for designed molecules. Thus, by regulating the long-range and short-range charge transfer ratios, excited state properties are successfully modulated and new efficient TADF molecules are proposed. Our research aims to provide deeper insight into long-range and short-range charge transfer features in balancing small ΔE ST and large f , which could facilitate the development of novel efficient TADF molecules.

Abstract:Noble metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules have attracted great attention because they open up the possibility of realizing high efficiency and low-cost organic light-emitting diodes. The structure–property relationship of these unusual emitters has been gradually revealed through combined theoretical and experimental investigations in the last decade. It is now known that the luminescent properties of TADF molecules are governed by some basic physical parameters, including the energy levels of the lowest excited singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) states, the radiation and non-radiation rates at S1, and the intersystem crossing rates between S1 and T1. This chapter gives an introduction to the physical concepts of these parameters and their experimental determination. Dynamic relationships among these parameters are discussed in terms of excited state relaxation and solid-state solvation. Finally, a quantum chemistry approach to the prediction of these parameters based on reasonable geometric and electronic structures is provided.

Abstract:Through-space charge transfer (TSCT)-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have attracted widespread attention due to their great potential in simultaneously possessing small singlet-triplet splitting energy (Δ E ST ) and rapid radiative rate ( k f ), but it remains a great challenge for the rational design of such materials. In this work, we perform a theoretical investigation on the photophysical properties of carbazole-based TSCT TADF materials both in solvent and solid phase using the polarizable continuum model and the combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics method to rationalize their experimental performance difference and reveal the molecular design principles. The results indicate that the molecules with gradually enhanced planarity of donor (D) or/and acceptor (A) units exhibit decreased distance and enhanced intramolecular interactions between D and A units originated from the intermolecular interactions of compact molecular arrangement, leading to favorable radiative rate process in solid phase compared with the situation in toluene. And the enhancement of planarity of D and A units significantly restricts the molecular stretching and rotation vibrations and decreases the non-radiative processes, which mainly contributes to the improved performance of the molecules. Moreover, such TSCT-based molecules show an obvious separation of the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital distributions, which is beneficial to achieving small Δ E ST values. These theoretical understandings could give an in-depth physical insight into the structure-property relationship of such TSCT-based materials, providing quasi-planar controlled strategies for the exploration of high-performance TADF materials.

Abstract:In terms of the molecular design for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), the high degree of spatial separation of frontier molecular orbitals can be achieved through constructing cofacial donor-acceptor alignment in a through-space charge transfer (TSCT) framework. When extremely low Delta E-ST is realized, TSCT-TADF molecules still suffer a low radiative transition rate (k(r)) of the emissive TSCT state. Compact TSCT-TADF emitters, mCz-Xo-TRZ and dCz-Xo-TRZ, have been reported, showing a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) with large k(r). To explore the physical mechanism of high PLQY and large k(r) in the TSCT conformation, comprehensive theoretical calculations on geometries, excitation energies, transition character, strong and weak electronic coupling, and vibration analysis on structural reorganization accompanied by time-resolved spectroscopy were applied to illustrate the electronic coupling mechanism in the compact and rigid TSCT framework and reveal the limited structural relaxation contributing to the nonradiative dissipation in excited states. This work contributes a deep understanding of the electronic interaction mechanism in TSCT molecular frameworks and provides theoretical guidance for the rational design of TSCT luminescent materials.

Abstract:A novel thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) compound, 9-(3-((4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)oxy)phenyl)-3,6-diphenyl-9H-carbazole (PhCz-o-Trz), with a donor-sigma-acceptor (D-sigma-A) motif is developed. A flexible small space sigma-junction is adopted to partly suppress the intramolecular charge transfer (intra-CT) while inversely enhancing the intermolecular charge transfer (inter-CT) between D/A moieties, realizing the coexistence of both intra-CT and inter-CT in an amorphous aggregate. The coexistence of dual CTs increases the complexity of the singlet and triplet state mixing, enhancing the triplet-to-singlet spin-flip transition and thereby the TADF emission. Additionally, PhCz-o-Trz is evaluated not only as an emitter but also as a sensitizing host for fluorescent and phosphorescent dopants, all exhibiting high efficiencies with alleviated efficiency roll-offs. These results shed light on the development of new TADF materials with dual CTs and may further deepen our understanding about TADF mechanisms.

Theoretical Study on the Light-Emitting Mechanism of Multifunctional Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Molecules

Abstract:Multifunctional thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules have recently attracted great attention. The light-emitting mechanisms of the TADF molecule PTZ-AQ with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) in three different aggregation states are studied using the combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method as well as the thermal vibration correlation function method. It is found that different aggregation patterns would induce different intermolecular interaction and molecular geometries. The different energy diagram of excited states also induce variation of emission colors and (reverse) intersystem crossing processes. By comparing with the light-emitting properties in solvent, the AIE property is confirmed, which is induced by enhanced radiative rate and decreased nonradiative rates in aggregation. The bicolor switch mechanism for the molecule in the solid state should have a close relationship with the dihedral angle change between the donor and the acceptor. The calculation results provide valuable information for understanding the light-emitting mechanism of the PTZ-AQ based polymorphs with AIE and MCL properties, which would favor the design of a new type multifunctional TADF molecules.

Abstract:Modulating charge transfer (CT) interactions between donor and acceptor molecules may give rise to unique dynamic changes in physicochemical properties, exhibiting great importance in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. In this work, we demonstrate the first instance of reversible photomodulation of donor-acceptor (D-A) CT interaction in the solid state.Pyridinium-based chromophore featuring π-conjugated D-A structures can not only function as a good electron acceptor to undergo photoinduced electron transfer (ET) or engage in intermolecular CT interaction, but also exhibit unique dual emission depending on the excitation wavelengths. The rotatable C-C single bonds within D-A pairs enhance the tunability of molecular structure. Through the synergy of a photoinduced ET and an excited-state conformational change, the intermolecular CT interaction can be switched on and off by alternate light irradiation to enables reversibly modulation of the affinity between donor and acceptor molecules, accompanied by visual color switching and fluorescence on-off as feedback signals.

Abstract:A cocrystallization strategy is used through incorporation of 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) as an acceptor with halogen-substituent thioxanthone (TX) derivatives as donors. The resulting cocrystals TT-R (R = H, F, Cl, Br, or I) transform the thermally activated delayed fluorescence emission in the TT-H, TT-F, and TT-Cl cocrystals to room-temperature phosphorescence in the TT-Br and TT-I cocrystals. Definite crystal packing structures demonstrate a 1:1 alternative donor-acceptor stacking in the TT-H cocrystal, a 2:1 alternative donor-acceptor stacking in the TT-F and TT-Cl cocrystals, and a separate stacking of donor and acceptor in the TT-Br and TT-I cocrystals. A transformation law can be revealed that with an increase in atomic number from H, F, Cl, Br, to I, the cocrystals show the structural transformation of the number of aggregated TX-R molecules from monomers to dimers and finally to multimers. This work will facilitate an understanding of the effect of halogen substituents on the crystal packing structure and luminescence properties in the cocrystals.
Modulating optoelectronic properties of red TADF emitters based on acenaphtho[1,2- b ]quinoxaline-3,4-dicarbonitrile through isomeric engineering

Abstract:Developing new electron acceptors with high rigidity and structural adjustability is significant for realizing efficient long-wavelength thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. Herein, a new acceptor group, acenaphtho[1,2- b ]quinoxaline-3,4-dicarbonitrile (AQCN), featuring a π-extended, rigid skeleton with high electron affinity, is developed for the construction of red TADF dyes. Two red light-emitting regioisomers, LB-Y and LB-T , featuring a Y-shape and T-shape D-A-D molecular configuration, respectively, were prepared by adjusting the relatively substituting position of two triphenylamine electron-rich moieties on AQCN. Through the isomeric engineering, it is found that LB-Y shows a high degree of molecular rigidity, matched excited-state energy level alignment, and decent interplay among singlet charge transfer excited state ( 1 CT), triplet locally excited state ( 3 LE) and triplet hybridized local and charge transfer excited state ( 3 HLCT). Therefore, LB-Y has a higher radiative transition rate (8.36 × 10 7 s −1 ), reverse intersystem crossing rate (1.02 × 10 5 s −1 ), and better electroluminescent performances ( λ EL = 614 nm, EQE max = 4.1%) than LB-T ( λ EL = 612 nm, EQE max = 2.6%). This study reports a promising electron acceptor and provides an efficient approach to modulating the optoelectronic properties of red TADF dyes.

Abstract:Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent (TADF) molecules with through-space charge transfer (TSCT) have broad application potential in organic light-emitting diodes. In this paper, five TPA-ace based molecules with different electron-withdrawing groups and TSCT property are investigated using polarizable continuum model (PCM) combined with density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent functional theory (TD-DFT) in Methylcyclohexane, Toluene and Dichloromethane. It is found that stronger electron-withdrawing ability of acceptors could induce redshift of emission and smaller energy gap between the first singlet excited state (S1) and the first triplet excited state (ΔEST). The ratio of TSCT to through bond charge transfer (TBCT) for S1 of TPA-ace-TRZ is calculated quantitatively, which further confirmed the TSCT character of TPA-ace-TRZ. The TADF property is also analyzed based on the calculation of spin-orbit coupling and the (reverse) intersystem crossing rates between S1 and T1. Our calculation results would favor the understanding of TSCT-TADF.

Abstract:An organic compound exhibiting simultaneously reversible switch between its emission colors and luminescence mechanisms,possessing high contrast from deep blue normal fluorescence(NF) to yellow thermally activated delayed fluorescence(TADF),is reported. Based on these two complementary colors, white-light emission combining NF and TADF from a single compound can be achieved in various states. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations indicate that the controllable conformational distribution under thermal and mechanical activation is the mechanism responsible for the reversible switching behavior.

Strategy to Modulate the Singlet-Triplet Energy Gap for Spiro-Based Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Molecules

Abstract:The energy gap between singlet and triplet states plays an important role in determining the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules, ingenious strategy to modulate the singlet-triplet energy gap is highly desired. In this work, the photophysical properties of eleven TADF molecules are theoretically investigated, which are composed of 9,10-dihydro-10-phenylacridine as an electron donor and various electron acceptor units based on spiro donor-acceptor structure as well as adopting the indene-carbazole unit as the bridging body. Two new proposed calculation methods are applied. The method of overlapping integral and ΔEst, is used to screen efficient TADF molecules, and the optimal Hartree-Fock method is adopted to investigate the excited state properties for promising TADF molecules. Results show that different substituents in the indene-carbazole unit are distinctive in modulating the singlet-triplet energy gaps and the emission colors. Moreover, two promising TADF molecules with purple and blue emission are detected and the performances of emitting molecules in host matrix are theoretically investigated. Remarkable spectral overlap between host emission and guest absorption can be found and efficient energy transfer from host to guest is expected. Furthermore, the charge transfer properties are revealed based on Marcus equation, excellent hole and electron transfer properties are detected, which are comparable with these experimental detected molecules. Our molecular design strategy could provide a rational approach to regulate the emission and energy transfer as well as charge transfer properties, two promising TADF molecules with purple and blue emission are theoretically proposed.
