Abstract:Metastable states arise in a range of quantum systems and can be observed in various dynamical scenarios, including decay, bubble nucleation, and long-lived oscillations. The phenomenology of metastable states has been examined in quantum many-body systems, notably in 1D ferromagnetic Ising spin systems and superfluids. In this paper, we study long-lived oscillations of metastable and ground states in 1D antiferromagnetic neutral atom chains with long-range Rydberg interactions. We use a staggered local detuning field to achieve confinement. Using theoretical and numerical models, we identify novel spectral signatures of quasiparticle oscillations distinct to antiferromagnetic neutral atom systems and interpret them using a classical energy model of short-range meson repulsion. Finally, we evaluate the experimental accessibility of our proposed setup on current neutral-atom platforms and discuss experimental feasibility and constraints.

Manipulation of Nuclear Isomers with Lasers: Mechanisms and Prospects.

Abstract:Over one hundred years have passed since the nuclear isomer was first introduced, in analogy with chemical isomers to describe long-lived excited nuclear states. In 1921, Otto Hahn discovered the first nuclear isomer $^{234m}$Pa. After that, step by step, it was realized that different types of nuclear isomers exist, including spin isomer, K isomer, seniority isomers, and ``shape and fission'' isomer. The spin isomer occurs when the spin change $ΔI$ of a transition is very large. The larger $ΔI$, the lower the electromagnetic transition rates, the longer the half-lives. The K-isomer exists due to the significant change in K, where K is the projection of the total angular momentum on the symmetry axis. The seniority isomers arise due to a very small transition probability in seniority conserving transitions around semi-magic nuclei, where the seniority, which corresponds to the number of unpaired nucleons, is a reasonably pure quantum number. For a so-called shape isomer, the inhibition of the decay transition comes from the associated shape changes. It is caused by that a nucleus is trapped in a deformed shape which is its secondary minimum and is hard to decay back to its ground state.

Abstract:The longer-lived excited nuclear states, referred as nuclear isomers, exist due to the hindered decays owing to their peculiar nucleonic structural surroundings. Some of these conditions, being exceptionally rare and limited to achieve, elevate certain isomers to the status of extreme and unusual isomers among their kin. For example, the $E5$ coupling of single-particle orbitals is rare and so are $E5$ decaying isomers. This review delves into some of such remarkable isomers scattered across the nuclear landscape while highlighting the possibilities to find more of them. Unique properties of some of them, harbor the potential for transformative applications in medicine and energy. An exciting example is that of the lowest energy isomer known so far in $^{229}$Th, which may help realize the dream of an ultra-precise nuclear clock in the coming decade. These isomers also offer an insight into the extremes of nuclear structure associated with them, which leads to their unusual status in energy, half-life, spin etc. The review attempts to highlight isomers with high-multipolarities, high-spins, high-energies, longest half-lives, extremely low energy, etc. A lack of theoretical understanding of the decay rates, half-lives and moments of these isomers is also pointed out.

Dynamical control of nuclear isomer depletion via electron vortex beams

Abstract:Long-lived excited states of atomic nuclei can act as energy traps. These states, known as nuclear isomers, can store a large amount of energy over long periods of time, with a very high energy-to-mass ratio. Under natural conditions, the trapped energy is only slowly released, limited by the long isomer lifetimes. Dynamical external control of nuclear state population has proven so far very challenging, despite ground-breaking incentives for a clean and efficient energy storage solution. Here, we describe a protocol to achieve the external control of the isomeric nuclear decay by using electrons whose wavefunction has been especially designed and reshaped on demand. Recombination of these electrons into the atomic shell around the isomer can lead to the controlled release of the stored nuclear energy. On the example of $^{93m}$Mo, we show that the use of tailored electron vortex beams increases the depletion by four orders of magnitude compared to the spontaneous nuclear decay of the isomer. Furthermore, specific orbitals can sustain an enhancement of the recombination cross section for vortex electron beams by as much as six orders of magnitude, providing a handle for manipulating the capture mechanism. These findings open new prospects for controlling the interplay between atomic and nuclear degrees of freedom, with potential energy-related and high-energy radiation sources applications.

Abstract:Atomically engineered artificial lattices are a useful tool for simulating complex quantum phenomena, but have so far been limited to the study of Hamiltonians where electron-electron interactions do not play a role. However, it is precisely the regime in which these interactions do matter where computational times lend simulations a critical advantage over numerical methods. Here, we propose a platform for constructing artificial matter that relies on the confinement of field-emission resonances, a class of vacuum-localized discretized electronic states. We use atom manipulation of surface vacancies in a chlorine-terminated Cu(100) surface to reveal square patches of the underlying metal, thereby creating atomically precise potential wells that host particle-in-a-box modes. By adjusting the dimensions of the confining potential, we can access states with different quantum numbers, making these patches attractive candidates as quantum dots or artificial atoms. We demonstrate that the lifetime of electrons in these engineered states can be extended and tuned through modification of the confining potential, either via atomic assembly or by changing the tip-sample distance. We also demonstrate control over a finite range of state filling, a parameter which plays a key role in the evolution of quantum many-body states. We model the transport through the localized state to disentangle and quantify the lifetime-limiting processes, illustrating the critical dependence of the electron lifetime on the properties of the underlying bulk band structure. The interplay with the bulk bands gives rise to negative differential resistance, leading to possible applications in engineering custom atomic-scale resonant tunnelling diodes, which exhibit similar current-voltage characteristics.

Abstract:We suggest a new class of isomeric states in nuclei. By study the mixed symmetry states in the framework of the neutron-proton interacting boson model(IBM2), it is found that some of the mixed symmetry states with moderate high spins change very fast with respect to the Majorana interaction. Under certain conditions, they become the yrast state or yrare state. These states are difficult to decay and become very stable. This study suggests that a possible new mode of isomers may exists due to the special nature in their proton and neutron degrees of freedom.

Abstract:A study of neutron-rich isotopes in the A = 185 region of the nuclear chart has uncovered long-lived (>1 s) isomers in several isotopes of hafnium, tantalum, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. The region was accessed via the use of projectile fragmentation with the UNILAC-SIS accelerators at GSI. Fragmentation products of Au-197 were passed through the fragment separator (FRS) and injected into the experimental storage ring (ESR), where single-ion identifications could be made. Evidence is presented for isomers in Hf-183,Hf-184,Hf-186, Ta-186,Ta-187, W-186, Re-190,Re-192,Re-194, and Os-195 with excitation energies in the range of 0.1-3.0 MeV. The lightest of these nuclides have well deformed prolate shapes, while the heaviest are transitional and susceptible to shape changes. Their properties are interpreted with the help of multi-quasiparticle and potential-energy-surface calculations.

Abstract:Molecules containing short-lived, radioactive nuclei are uniquely positioned to enable a wide range of scientific discoveries in the areas of fundamental symmetries, astrophysics, nuclear structure, and chemistry. Recent advances in the ability to create, cool, and control complex molecules down to the quantum level, along with recent and upcoming advances in radioactive species production at several facilities around the world, create a compelling opportunity to coordinate and combine these efforts to bring precision measurement and control to molecules containing extreme nuclei. In this manuscript, we review the scientific case for studying radioactive molecules, discuss recent atomic, molecular, nuclear, astrophysical, and chemical advances which provide the foundation for their study, describe the facilities where these species are and will be produced, and provide an outlook for the future of this nascent field.

Abstract:The study of nuclear isomer properties and the isomer applications is a current research focus of nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics. Theoretical description of nuclear isomers, the surrounding states, and the interplay of them becomes an important issue. In this article, we present the projected shell model method for describing excited nuclear states in general, and for treating K -isomers in particular. With some examples, we emphasize how to apply the modern nuclear many-body technique to calculate K -isomers and normal excited states on an equal footing.

Abstract:Isomers, ubiquitous populations of relatively long-lived nuclear excited states, play a crucial role in nuclear physics. However, isomers with half-life times of several seconds or less barely had experimental cross section data due to the lack of a suitable measuring method. We report a method of online {\gamma} spectroscopy for ultra-short-lived isomers from photonuclear reactions using laser-driven ultra-intense {\gamma}-rays. The fastest time resolution can reach sub-ps level with {\gamma}-ray intensities >10^{19}/s ({\geqslant} 8 MeV). The ^{115}In({\gamma}, n)^{114m2}In reaction (T_{1/2} = 43.1 ms) was first measured in the high-energy region which shed light on the nuclear structure studies of In element. Simulations showed it would be an efficient way to study ^{229m}Th (T_{1/2} = 7 {\mu}s), which is believed to be the next generation of nuclear clock. This work offered a unique way of gaining insight into ultra-short lifetimes and promised an effective way to fill the gap in relevant experimental data.

Half-lives of Α Decay from Natural Nuclides and from Superheavy Elements

Abstract:Recently, experimental researches on the α decay with long lifetime are one of hot topics in the contemporary nuclear physics [e.g. N. Kinoshita et al. (2012) [2] and J.W. Beeman et al. (2012) [4]]. In this study, we have systematically investigated the extremely long-lived α-decaying nuclei within a generalized density-dependent cluster model involving the experimental nuclear charge radii. In detail, the important density distribution of daughter nuclei is deduced from the corresponding experimental charge radii, leading to an improved α-core potential in the quantum tunneling calculation of α-decay width. Besides the excellent agreement between theory and experiment, predictions on half-lives of possible candidates for natural α emitters are made for future experimental detections. In addition, the recently confirmed α-decay chain from 294117 is well described, including the attractive long-lived α-decaying 270Db, i.e., a positive step towards the “island of stability” in the superheavy mass region.

Abstract:Nuclear photonics is a emerging field of science which combines research with new generation -ray sources based on traditional and laser-based electron accelerators. Here, we discuss isomeric studies carried out with -ray beams having either continuous, or quasi-monochromatic photon spectra. In experiments with high-power lasers, intense secondary radiation sources are generated. Such experiments explore isomer population or de-excitation in plasma environments. Laser-accelerated particle beams with high charge also facilitate high-energy nuclear excitations, leading to efficient production of nuclear isomers with higher lying isomeric state (reaching MeV energy level) within very-short time scales. The population of isomeric states is a sensitive diagnostic method for characterization of the laser-driven secondary radiation sources.

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:Investigation into the properties and structure of unstable nuclei far from stability is a key avenue of research in modern nuclear physics. These efforts are motivated by the continual observation of unexpected structure phenomena in nuclei with unusual proton-to-neutron ratios. In recent decades, laser spectroscopy techniques have made significant contributions in our understanding of exotic nuclei in different mass regions encompassing almost the entire nuclear chart. This is achieved through determining multiple fundamental properties of nuclear ground and isomeric states, such as nuclear spins, magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments and charge radii, via the measurement of hyperfine structures and isotope shifts in the atomic or ionic spectra of the nuclei of interest. These properties offer prominent tests of recently developed state-of-the-art nuclear theory and help to stimulate new developments in improving the many-body methods and nucleon–nucleon interactions at the core of these models. With the aim of exploring more exotic short-lived nuclei located ever closer to the proton and neutron driplines, laser spectroscopy techniques, with their continuous technological developments towards higher resolution and higher sensitivity, are extensively employed at current- and next-generation radioactive ion beam facilities worldwide. Ongoing efforts in parallel promise to improve the availability of these even more exotic species at next-generation facilities. Very recently, an innovative application of laser spectroscopy on molecules containing short-lived nuclei has been demonstrated offering additional opportunities for several fields of research, e.g. fundamental symmetry studies and astrophysics. In this review, the basic nuclear properties measurable with laser spectroscopy will be introduced. How these observables are associated with nuclear structure and nucleon–nucleon interactions will be discussed. Following this, a general overview of different laser spectroscopy methods will be given with particular emphasis on technical advancements reported in recent years. The main focus of this article is to review the numerous highlights that have resulted from studying exotic nuclei in different mass regions with laser spectroscopy techniques since the last edition in this series. Finally, the challenges facing the field in addition to future opportunities will be discussed.

Abstract:Isomer with long lifetime and high excitation energy is of great significance in the fields of national strategic secur-ity and energy storage.Mastering the method of inducing isomer to decay is the key technology.However,this technology has got into trouble in recent years.For mastering the method of inducing isomer to decay,it is beneficial to start the research on the formation,excitation and de-excitation mechanism of isomer from the view of atomic nucleus structure.In this work,we used a white light neutron beam to bombard the Hf target in terms of experimental technology,and innovatively established a triple coincidence measurement system consisting of a barium fluoride detector array GTAF-Ⅱ for full energy measurement,a high-purity germanium detector for characteristic Y-ray measurement,and a white light neutron time-of-flight measurement.Through the analysis of experimental data,we found the sign of the 178Hf isomeric state exciting to the transition level and re-leasing rapidly.
Exploring the Half-Lives of Extremely Long-Lived Α Emitters *

Abstract:Naturally occurring alpha emitters with extremely long half-lives are investigated using the latest experimental data. Within the time-dependent perturbation theory, alpha decay with a rather narrow width is treated as a quasi-stationary problem by dividing the potential between the alpha particle and daughter nucleus into a stationary part and a perturbation. The experimental alpha decay half-lives of seven available long-lived alpha emitters with T-1/2(total) > 10(14) y are reproduced with a good accuracy. It is also found that the deformation effect should be treated carefully for long-lived nuclei, especially with low Q(alpha), values. Predictions of the alpha decay half-lives of twenty naturally occurring nuclei are provided, namely, Ce-142, Nd-145,Nd-146, Sm-149, Dy-156, Er-162,Er-164, (168)yb, W-182,W-183,W-184,W-186 Os-187,Os-188,Os-189,Os-190, Pt-192,Pt-195, and Pb-204,Pb-206. These nuclei are energetically unstable to alpha decay with low decay energies and extremely long decay half-lives. In particular, the candidates Os-187 and Sm-149 are strongly recommended for future experiments.
From exotic mean-field symmetries to new classes of isomers in atomic nuclei

Abstract:In this article, we address the occurrence and properties of exotic point-group symmetries in nuclei. We focus on the relations between the specific gap openings in the single-nucleon spectra, which represent a measure of nuclear stability studied with the help of the nuclear mean-field theory and accompanying octupole shape properties manifesting the link between the particular stability configurations (magic octupole gaps) and resulting exotic geometrical forms. We employ a realistic phenomenological realisation of the nuclear mean-field theory with the so-called universal Woods–Saxon Hamiltonian and the group representation theory to formulate the experimental identification criteria of the addressed symmetries. We use the newest parameterisations of the Hamiltonian obtained employing the inverse problem theory. To stabilise the modelling predictions, we detect and eliminate parametric correlations. Following earlier articles introducing the octupole "fourfold magic numbers" and "universal magic numbers", , examined in the heavy and super-heavy nuclei, we generalise these concepts for the whole mass table for the octupole magic chain . They bring in the so-called high-rank tetrahedral and octahedral point groups strengthening the specific shell effects and gap openings and implying the unique hindrance factors: at the exact tetrahedral symmetry limit, the collective electric quadrupole and dipole reduced transition probabilities vanish provoking new isomerism. Under these circumstances, many rotational states which in other nuclei manifest strong decay probabilities, in the high-rank symmetry case become isomeric—forming a new class of nuclear high-rank symmetry isomers. The consequences for the future experimental studies of those isomers are discussed especially in the domain of exotic nuclei.

Long-lived Three-Quasiparticle Isomers in 191ir and 193ir with Triaxial Deformation

Abstract:Deep-inelastic reactions have been used to populate high-spin states in the iridium isotopes. New results include the identification of particularly long-lived three-quasiparticle isomers in 191Ir and 193Ir, with mean-lives of 8.2(7) s and 180(3) μs respectively, decaying into newly identified states of the h11/2 proton bands and into other structures. Spins and parities of Jπ=31/2+ are suggested for both, consistent with coupling of the 11/2−[505] proton to the 10− two-neutron excitations in the cores. These and other configurations are discussed in the context of configuration constrained potential-energy-surface calculations. All calculated intrinsic states are expected to be associated with triaxial shapes and the extreme isomerism observed is attributed to spin-trapping rather than K-hindrance.
Experimental Access to Observing Decay from Extremely Long-Lived Metastable Electronic States via Penning Trap Spectrometry

Abstract:Long-lived ionic quantum states known as metastable electronic states in highly-charged ions (HCIs) are of great interest in fundamental physics. Especially, it generates transitions with very narrow natural linewidth which is a promising candidate for use in the next generation HCI atomic clocks to reach an accuracy below $10^{-19}$. A recent experiment reported in [Nature,581(7806) 2020], used Penning trap mass spectrometry to measure the energy of an extremely long-lived metastable electronic state, thus opening doors to search for HCI clock transitions. Building upon prior research, this study introduces an experimental proposal with the goal of measuring lifetimes of the metastable states beyond seconds. Our approach employs a sequential pulse-and-phase measurement scheme, allowing for direct observations of the decay processes from metastable electronic states through single-ion mass spectrometry in a Penning trap. This measurement poses a significant challenge to conventional techniques like fluorescence detection. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, we conducted a comprehensive simulation under real experimental conditions, yielding promising results in a specific scenario. Two suitable candidates are proposed for testing this method, and the state-of-the-art MCDHF theory are employed for accurate energy levels and transition rate calculations. Some future prospects in the experimental determinations of a wide range of energy and lifetimes of long-lived metastable electronic states, probing hyperfine and magnetic quenching effects on high-order forbidden transitions and search for highly quality HCI clock transitions are discussed.
