Abstract:As a metal-free semiconductor material, graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4), the high recombination rate of photogenerated charges and insufficient sunlight absorption limit its solar-based photocatalytic activity. Here, we reported the heterojunctions of C3N4–Cu2O with a p–n junction structure, which was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The HR-TEM result revealed an intimate interface between C3N4 and Cu2O in the heterojunction, and UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra showed their extended spectral response in the visible region compared with pure C3N4. These excellent structural and spectral properties, as well as p–n junction structures, endowed the C3N4–Cu2O heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. The possible photocatalytic mechanism that photogenerated holes as the mainly oxidant species in photocatalysis was proposed base on the trapping experiments.

Abstract:AbstractGraphitic carbon nitride (CN), as a nonmetallic photocatalyst, has gained considerable attention for its cost‐effectiveness and environmentally friendly nature in catalyzing solar‐driven CO2 conversion into valuable products. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of CO2 reduction with CN remains low, accompanied by challenges in achieving desirable product selectivity. To address these limitations, a two‐step hydrothermal‐calcination tandem synthesis strategy is presented, introducing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into CN and forming ultra‐thin CQD/CN nanosheets. The integration of CQDs induces a distinct work function with CN, creating a robust interface electric field after the combination. This electric field facilitates the accumulation of photoelectrons in the CQDs region, providing an abundant source of reduced electrons for the photocatalytic process. Remarkably, the CQD/CN nanosheets exhibit an average CO yield of 120 µmol g−1, showcasing an outstanding CO selectivity of 92.8%. The discovery in the work not only presents an innovative pathway for the development of high‐performance photocatalysts grounded in non‐metallic CN materials employing CQDs but also opens new avenues for versatile application prospects in environmental protection and sustainable cleaning energy.
Efficient Electron Transfer in g-C3N4/TiO2 Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Excessive emissions of carbon dioxide have led to the greenhouse effect and global warming. Reducing carbon dioxide into high-value-added chemicals through solar energy is a promising approach. Herein, a g-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient electron transfer is designed for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The CH4 (18.32 μmol·h−1·g−1) and CO (25.35 μmol·h−1·g−1) evolution rates of g-C3N4/TiO2 are higher than those of g-C3N4 and TiO2. The enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance is attributed to the efficient charge carrier transfer in the g-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction. The electron transfer route was verified by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic CO2 reduction mechanism on g-C3N4/TiO2 was investigated by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). This work provides a strategy for designing a polymer/metallic oxide heterojunction with efficient electron transfer for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Ascorbic-acid-assisted In-Situ Construction of S-scheme CuO/Cu2O Hetero-Nanosheets with Active Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) Bridges for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Efficient charge transfer across interfaces is highly desirable, but remains challenging in engineering semiconductor heterojunctions for photocatalysis. In this work, hybrid hetero-nanosheets (HNSs) of CuO/Cu2O bridged with interfacial Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) have been constructed via an in-situ topotactic transformation strategy, in which CuO nanosheets are partially reduced by ascorbic acid and transformed into Cu2O. The interfacial Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) bridges are found to provide fast transfer channels for photogenerated carriers transporting from CuO to Cu2O in an S-scheme pathway, leading to enhanced separation of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the bond bridges can tune the kinetic and thermodynamic processes of the CO2-to-CO conversion at interfacial Cu(I) catalytic sites by altering the rate-determined step and shifting downwards d-band center of the Cu(I) sites. Owing to the interfacial Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) bridges, the optimized CuO/Cu2O HNSs significantly expedite the CO2 photoreduction to CO, delivering a CO2 conversion rate of 22.14 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with a CO selectivity of 94.4%, outperforming the state-of-the-art copper oxide-based photocatalysts. This work demonstrates an effective in-situ topotactic transformation strategy to create interfacial bond bridges at heterogeneous interfaces for boosted photocatalysis as well as the critical roles of interface catalytic sites for CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Fabrication of well-designed heterojunctions is an extraordinarily attractive pathway for boosting the photocatalytic activity toward CO2 photoreduction. Herein, a novel kind of nanosheet-based intercalation hybrid coupled with CdSe quantum dots (QDs) was successfully fabricated by a facile solvothermal method and served as photocatalyst for full-spectrum-light-driven CO2 reduction. Ultra-small CdSe QDs were rationally in-situ introduced and coupled with lamellar ZnSe-intercalation hybrid nanosheet, resulting in the formation of CdSe QDs/ZnSe hybrid heterojunction. Significantly, the concentration of Cd2+ could change directly the crystallinity and micromorphology of ZnSe intercalation hybrid, which in turn would impact on the photocatalysis activity. The optimized CdSe QDs/ZnSe hybrid-5 composite demonstrated a considerable CO yield rate of the 25.6 μmol g-1 h-1 without any additional cocatalysts or sacrificial agents assisting, making it one of the best reported performance toward CO2 photoreduction under full-spectrum light. The elevated CO2 photoreduction activity could be attributed to the special surface heterojunction, leading to improving the ability of light absorption and promoting the separation/transfer of photogenerated carriers. This present study developed a new strategy for designing inorganic-organic heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalyst for CO2 photoreduction and provided an available way to simultaneously mitigate the greenhouse effect and alleviate energy shortage pressure.

Abstract:Metal-organic layers (MOLs), a new class of 2D photocatalysts with abundant readily accessible active sites, have emerged as a new 2D catalysis platform. Most pristine MOLs possess large band gap and merely harvest ultraviolet light, which restricts their application in solar-driven CO2 reduction. If MOLs are combined with visible-light-active semiconductors, it may overcome the shortage and construct efficient CO2 reduction photocatalysts. Herein, a series of 2D/2D TM-MOLs/CN (TM = transition metal; CN = g-C3N4) heterogeneous composites were assembled by an in-situ ultrasonic-assisted synthesis method. The resultant Co-MOL/CN(400) exhibited excellent photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance, with a CO formation rate of 539 μmol h−1 g−1 and a selectivity of 79.8 %. The proximity of the interfacial contact between Co-MOL and CN facilitates charge carriers separation/transfer from photosensitizer to catalytic centers, which afforded a superior photoactivity performance than most MOFs/CN (MOF = metal-organic frameworks) analogous hybrid photocatalysts. This heterogeneous composite thus represents a remarkable steppingstone in 2D/2D assemble multifunctional materials for studying artificial photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to solar chemicals and fuels.

Abstract:The application of solar energy to transform carbon dioxide into energy-rich products is one of the sustainable ways to alleviate energy scarcity and environmental crisis. However, the low efficiency of solar light and the high recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs limit the industrial value of photocatalytic technology in terms of applications. Here, we report a high-performance photocatalyst based on g-C3N4, which was compounded and modified utilizing CuInS2. The photocatalytic performance is enhanced by constructing Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers to meet the practical application requirements. CuInS2/g-C3N4 has the best photocatalytic CO yield of 246.75 μmol/g/h and CO selectivity of more than 93%. The role of dual-metal sites in the catalytic system is also explored by DFT calculations. The results not only provide a new perspective for the design of efficient CO2 photoreduction photocatalysts, but also provide a proven method for enhancing the performance of photocatalysts.

Abstract:Herein, ultrathin dimension-matched metal phthalocyanine/treated g-C3N4 (MPc/T-CN) heterojunctions with exceptional photocatalytic activities for converting CO2 to CO and CH4 have been controllably constructed through a facile surface hydroxyl group-induced assembly process, in which the increased amount of hydroxyl group by treating g-C3N4 nanosheets with HNO3 solution is much crucial for this successful assembly to improve the interfacial connection via the formed hydrogen bonding. Among the used MPc, CuPc is the best modifier for T-CN comprehensively dependent on the promotion for charge transfer and CO2 activation based on the theoretical and experimental results. The photocatalytic activity of optimized CuPc/T-CN heterojunction is about 10-fold improvement under UV–vis light irradiation compared with that of pristine CN, mainly attributed to the unexpected transfer of excited high- level-energy electrons (HLEEs) from T-CN to the ligand of CuPc and then to the central metal ions (Cu2+) with potential catalytic function for CO2 reduction reactions.

Abstract:Solar-driven conversion of CO2 is considered an efficient way to tackle the energy and environmental crisis. However, the photocatalytic performance is severely restricted due to the insufficient accessible active sites and inhibited electron transfer efficiency. This work demonstrates a general in situ topological transformation strategy for the integration of uniform Co-based species to fabricate a series of multishelled superstructures (MSSs) for CO2 photocatalytic conversion. Thorough characterizations reveal the obtained MSSs feature ultrathin Co-based nanosheet assembled polyhedral structures with tunable shell numbers, inner cavity sizes, and compositions. The superstructures increase the spatial density of Co-based active sites while maintaining their high accessibility. Further, the ultrathin nanosheets also facilitate the transfer of photogenerated electrons. As a result, the ZnCo bimetallic hydroxide featuring an ultrathin nanosheet assembled quadruple-shell hollow structure (ZnCo-OH QUNH) exhibits high photocatalytic efficiency toward CO2 reduction with a CO evolution rate of 134.2 μmol h–1 and an apparent quantum yield of 6.76% at 450 nm. Abstract:The reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons through photocatalysis is a promising way to realize “carbon-neutral”. Nevertheless, developing efficient photocatalysts to achieve high solar energy conversion efficiency and CO2 conversion efficiency is a challenge. Here, we constructed a defective Cu2–x S/Ni-Al-LDH heterojunction photocatalyst via a hydrothermal method. The designed Cu vacancies in Cu2–x S and multiband transition of layered double hydroxide (LDH) promised its efficient solar energy utilization, showing decent CO2 photoreduction performance in both the full-spectrum and near-infrared (NIR) regions. The optimized 15% Cu2–x S/LDH composite achieved CH4 and CO yields of 14.2 μmol/g/h (2.83 μmol/g/h in the NIR region) and 5.3 μmol/g/h (2.99 μmol/g/h in the NIR region), respectively. Furthermore, the corresponding apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of a 15% Cu2–x S/LDH catalyst is 3.86% at 420 nm. Experimental and characterization results suggested that the enhanced CO2 photoreduction performance could be ascribed to the fabricated p–n heterojunction with a Z-scheme charge transfer route between Cu2–x S and LDH, which inhibited the electron–hole recombination and improved the reaction kinetic energy owing to a higher conduction potential. The fabricated binary catalytic system with the nonprecious metal Cu2–x S and LDH has great prospects for realizing cost-efficient CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Reducing CO2 through artificial photosynthesis is a remarkable strategy for converting solar energy into useful chemical feedstocks. However, most photocatalytic systems suffer from low efficiency owing to insufficient active sites and the lack of a directional charge-transfer channel. Herein, we develop Cu single atoms (SAs) on the nitrogen-doped carbon anchored on TiO2 with the anatase-rutile mixed phase (Cu SAs/TiO2), which shows 100% CO selectivity and high apparent quantum efficiency of 2.0% at 420 nm in photocatalytic CO2 reduction with H2O vapor. Such a high performance is ascribed to the synergetic effect of Cu SAs and phase junction, where Cu SAs act as adsorption and activation sites of CO2 and phase junction accelerates the migration of photogenerated electrons along the Ti-N-Cu-(O-CO2) channel. Theoretical calculation further shows that the strong hybridization of Cu 3d and CO2-O 2p orbitals promotes the electron transfer from Cu SAs to CO2, effectively optimizing the rate-limiting step (CO2* -> COOH*).
Controllable synthesis of CuPc/N-rich doped (0 0 1) TiO 2 S-scheme nanosheet heterojunctions for efficiently wide-visible light-driven CO 2 reduction

Abstract:Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the rational design of efficient S-scheme heterojunctions holds promises for CO 2 conversion by utilizing solar light. Herein, nitrogen-rich doped 001-exposed anatase nanosheets (NPT) have been designed and fabricated by post-treatment with NH 3 at a high temperature of 600 °C to phosphate modified TiO 2 firstly, and then controllably coupled with copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) via a hydroxyl-induced assembly process to construct a wide-visible-light responsive heterojunction towards CO 2 conversion. The optimized CuPc/NPT heterojunction achieves a high production rate of CO (∼5 μmol/g/h) under visible light irradiation, with ∼9-fold enhancement compared with generally N-doped TiO 2 . Based on the experimental results mainly from photocurrent action spectra, electron paramagnetic resonance measurements, electrochemical reduction curves and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra, it is confirmed that the exceptional photoactivity is attributed to the N-rich doping for increasing visible-light absorption of TiO 2 , the effective S-scheme charge transfer from the closely-contacted CuPc/NPT heterojunction with wide visible-light absorption, and subsequently to the electron transfer from the Pc ligand to central metal Cu 2+ with good catalytic function for CO 2 reduction. This work provides feasible routes for the design and preparation of TiO 2 -based photocatalysts for solar-driven CO 2 conversion.

Abstract:Due to the high charge separation efficiency leading to high photocatalytic activity, there has been significant interest in enhancing the charge separation ability of photocatalysts by controlling the heterojunction structure. To investigate the effect of the heterojunction structure on the photocatalytic performance of composite catalysts and understand its corresponding mechanism, a Z-scheme ZnFe2O4/ZnO/CdS heterojunction was constructed using the ultrasound method and used for CO2 photoreduction. The Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst demonstrates elevated photocatalytic and charge separation efficiencies. Specifically, the conversion rate for the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CH4 reaches 105.9 μmol g-1 h-1, surpassing that of the majority of previously reported semiconductor photocatalysts like ZnFe2O4/CdS. This research offers a fresh perspective on the development of innovative heterojunction photocatalysts and broadens the utilization of ternary composite materials in CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction has attracted extensive attention because of its abilities to generate renewable clean fuels while immobilizing CO2. However, the widely used CO2 reduction photocatalysts generally have the problems of inadequate light absorption performance and insufficient photocatalytic reaction yield. Here we report 0D/2D CsPbBr3 quantum dot/CuCo2O4 nanosheet composites (CsPbBr3 QD/CuCo2O4 NS composites) synthesized by mechanical mixing method, which are applied for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Thanks to the narrow bandgaps of CsPbBr3 QD and CuCo2O4 NS, CsPbBr3 QD/CuCo2O4 NS composites represent strong light absorption performance. The p-n heterojunction forms between CsPbBr3 QD and CuCo2O4 NS obviously boosts the charge separation, leading to the photocatalytic activity and stability of CsPbBr3 QD/CuCo2O4 NS composites significantly exceeding that of CsPbBr3 QD and CuCo2O4 NS. After 5 h of photocatalytic reaction, the generation rate for CH4 of CsPbBr3 QD/CuCo2O4 NS composites is 285.93 μmolg−1, which is about 3.2 times and 9.2 times higher than CsPbBr3 QD (88.08 μmolg−1) and CuCo2O4 NS (30.92 μmolg−1), respectively. This work provides a new insight to construct novel heterojunction photocatalysts based on lead halide perovskite QD, which shows the enhanced photocatalytic activity and light absorption performance.

However, the severe carrier recombination and low charge transfer efficiency largely restrain their photocatalytic performance. Herein, a series of graphene supported dual-phase perovskite QDs photocatalysts were designed by a facile hot-injection strategy for highly efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Catalytic results showed that under a 5 W white LED irradiation, the CsPbBr 3 /Cs 4 PbBr 6 @G 5% composite with 5 wt% graphene loading exhibited an optimum CO yield of 18.76 μmol g −1 with a selectivity of 52.99% towards the product of CO for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. The enhanced photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance over the composites compared with that of CsPbBr 3 , Cs 4 PbBr 6 and CsPbBr 3 /Cs 4 PbBr 6 QDs could be ascribed to the type-I heterojunction structure and graphene support as the electron acceptor in the composite, which could stepwise accelerate the charge separation, suppresses recombination process, and provide more active sites for CO 2 adsorption and reaction. This work would bring new insight in designing novel efficient perovskite-based catalysts for photocatalytic CO 2 transformation.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis has become one of the most attractive strategies for lowering atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) level and achieving the carbon balance; whereas, the fast electron–hole recombination and sluggish charge transfer in photocatalysts are themain stumbling blocks to the applications. Constructing semiconductor nano-heterostructures provides a promising strategy to accelerate the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers for promoting the multielectron CO2 reduction reaction. Herein, a CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 three-component photocatalyst consisting of type II and Z-scheme tandem heterojunctions is skillfully fabricated via the solvothermal synthesis followed with photoinduced deposition. The CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 tandem-heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits superior performance toward the conversion of CO2 to fuels (CO and CH4), compared with the single- and binary-component systems, owing to the favorable energy-level alignment, accelerated charge separation, facilitated water dissociation and sufficient reactive-hydrogen provision. The total consumed electron number of CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 catalyst for CO2 reduction is about 10.5 times that of pure g-C3N4. The photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated according to detailed characterizations and in-situ spectroscopy analyses. This work sheds light on the rational construction of heterojunction photocatalysts to promote the conversion of CO2 to solar fuels, without using any sacrifice reagent or noble-metal cocatalysts.

Abstract:Low-mass interfacial contacts and poor charge transfer efficiency severely limit the CO2 photoreduction performance of semiconductor heterojunctions. In this work, g-C3N4/Ag@Ag3PO4 S-scheme heterojunction is prepared by an in-situ growth method. The main product for CO2 photoreduction is CO with the selectivity of 97 %. The evolution rate of CO for optimal g-C3N4/Ag@Ag3PO4 heterojunction is 123.8 mu mol g- 1 h-1, which are 8.3and 3.4-fold higher than those of pristine Ag3PO4 and g-C3N4, respectively. It is found that Ag3PO4, Ag, and gC3N4 form strong interacting interfacial structure, in which Ag3PO4 links with Ag nanoparticles through tandem Ohmic contact. More importantly, sigma bonds are formed via hybridization of px orbital for C and N with dx2-y2 orbitals of Ag in g-C3N4/Ag@Ag3PO4 S-scheme heterojunction, establishing an atomic-level dx2-y2(Ag)-px(C,N) charge flow highway. This work provides new viewpoints into the design of heterojunction photocatalysts with high-quality interfaces and highlights the insights of charge transfer behavior in regulating the catalytic activity.

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) Zn-MOF-NH2/Cu heterojunctions were prepared via in situ photodeposition of Cu NPs on the surface of 2D Zn-MOF-NH2. The 2D Zn-MOF-NH2/Cu (1 wt%) heterojunction exhibited the excellent photocatalytic activity with a CO production rate of 0.76 μmol/h under irradiation of full spectrum light only using H2O as a hole sacrificial agent, which is 16.2 and 2.7 times that of bulk Zn-MOF-NH2 and 2D Zn-MOF-NH2 nanosheets, respectively. This work provides an insight into design of a highly efficient 2D MOFs-based photocatalysts in catalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Lead-free double perovskites with superior stability have been considered as promising non-toxic substitutes to their lead-contained counterparts in photocatalysis. However, the severe charge recombination greatly restricts their potential as high-performance photocatalysts. Herein, for the first time, we present a self-assembled heterostructure of lead-free double perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 nanocrystals (NCs) on the surface of MXene nanosheets via mutual electrostatic attraction. The presence of MXene nanosheets effectively promotes the formation of free charge carriers in Cs2AgBiBr6 NCs via reducing the exciton binding energy. Additionally, the ultrafast photogenerated electron transfer from Cs2AgBiBr6 to MXene with a timescale of 1.1 ps largely prolongs the charge carrier lifetime by two times. As a result of the efficient charge separation and electron extraction, the Cs2AgBiBr6/MXene heterostructures achieve a high photoelectron consumption yield of 50.6 µmol g-1 h-1 for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, which surpasses most previously reported lead-free perovskite-based catalysts.
