Abstract:Efficient charge transfer across interfaces is highly desirable, but remains challenging in engineering semiconductor heterojunctions for photocatalysis. In this work, hybrid hetero-nanosheets (HNSs) of CuO/Cu2O bridged with interfacial Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) have been constructed via an in-situ topotactic transformation strategy, in which CuO nanosheets are partially reduced by ascorbic acid and transformed into Cu2O. The interfacial Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) bridges are found to provide fast transfer channels for photogenerated carriers transporting from CuO to Cu2O in an S-scheme pathway, leading to enhanced separation of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the bond bridges can tune the kinetic and thermodynamic processes of the CO2-to-CO conversion at interfacial Cu(I) catalytic sites by altering the rate-determined step and shifting downwards d-band center of the Cu(I) sites. Owing to the interfacial Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) bridges, the optimized CuO/Cu2O HNSs significantly expedite the CO2 photoreduction to CO, delivering a CO2 conversion rate of 22.14 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with a CO selectivity of 94.4%, outperforming the state-of-the-art copper oxide-based photocatalysts. This work demonstrates an effective in-situ topotactic transformation strategy to create interfacial bond bridges at heterogeneous interfaces for boosted photocatalysis as well as the critical roles of interface catalytic sites for CO2 conversion.

Abstract:As a greenhouse gas, CO2 is also a rich carbon resource. Using sunlight to reduce CO2 to usable substances through photocatalysis can alleviate the greenhouse effect and realize energy recycling. Herein, CuS nanoparticles are grown in situ on the surface of inverse opal g-C3N4 by a one-step hydrothermal method. The inverse opal structure can increase the specific surface area of the material, and CuS can be used as the cocatalyst to accept photo-generated electrons on the conduction band of g-C3N4, thereby promoting the separation and transfer of photo-generated charges. And the interfacial charge transfer mechanism of CuS further improves the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes. The photocatalytic reduction of CO2 activity of the prepared catalyst is greatly improved. The CO yield reaches 13.24 μmol g−1 h−1. A new strategy is provided to develop artificial photosynthesis for reduction of CO2.

Abstract:The visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) (CO2RR) to value-added fuels presents a feasible approach to curb anthropogenic CO2 emissions and mitigate the increasing energy crisis. However, developing photocatalysts with excellent performance still remains a great challenge in this field. Herein Co,Cu,N-codoped carbon nanoparticles (Co1Cu1/NC) were fabricated through the pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) with Cu(NO3)2 adsorbed inside the cavities and CoTBPP decorated over the surface of ZIF. Spherical aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements disclose the dual-metal single-atomic nature of Co1Cu1/NC consisting of atomically dispersed Co-Cu pair sites on a nitrogen-doped carbon support. Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure analysis reveals the tetra-N-coordinated nature of each metal in Co1Cu1/NC (N2-Co-N2-Cu-N2). For the purpose of comparative study, Co,N-and Cu,N-codoped carbon nanoparticles (Co1/NC and Cu1/NC) also with single atomic site nature have been fabricated following the same route. The as-prepared Co1Cu1/NC exhibits highly effective photocatalytic CO2-to-CO reduction with a considerably high CO-generating yield of 22.46 mmol g-1 and a CO selectivity of 83.4% after 2 h of visible-light irradiation. Experimental characterizations and in particular theoretical calculations disclose the close association of the remarkable CO2RR catalytic activity of Co1Cu1/NC with the synergetic effect of the Co-Cu atomic-pair sites, which facilitate the conversion of CO2 to CO via lowering the energy barrier for the formation of the *COOH intermediate. This work paves a new avenue for the rational design and construction of atomic-pair photocatalysts with boosted performance.
Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 by two-dimensional Zn-MOF-NH2/Cu heterojunctions

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) Zn-MOF-NH2/Cu heterojunctions were prepared via in situ photodeposition of Cu NPs on the surface of 2D Zn-MOF-NH2. The 2D Zn-MOF-NH2/Cu (1 wt%) heterojunction exhibited the excellent photocatalytic activity with a CO production rate of 0.76 μmol/h under irradiation of full spectrum light only using H2O as a hole sacrificial agent, which is 16.2 and 2.7 times that of bulk Zn-MOF-NH2 and 2D Zn-MOF-NH2 nanosheets, respectively. This work provides an insight into design of a highly efficient 2D MOFs-based photocatalysts in catalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Herein, a MOF-on-MOF-derived In2O3 nanosheets encapsulating CuO ortho-octahedral core–shell structure CuO@In2O3 S-Scheme heterojunction composite was designed and prepared by a new strategy of interfacial engineering integrating optical and catalytic activity centers, which endowed with the catalyst's dual properties of both highly efficient light absorption and charge separation. The In2O3 shell wraps around the CuO core in a tight coaxial contact, allowing them have the largest contact surface thus effectively promoting the transport of electrons and holes separated at the interface. More importantly, CuO@In2O3 formed a binuclear center could enhance the CO2 adsorption to facilitate the subsequent catalytic reaction and promote the charge transfer through Cu-O-In bonds. The successful construction of S-scheme heterojunction not only promotes the spatial separation of electron-hole pairs, but also maintains the strongest redox potentials of CuO and In2O3 at the conduction and valence band positions. Notably, the intermediates in the CO2 photoreduction process were probed by in situ infrared spectroscopy and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was hypothesized. Under visible light irradiation, the CuO@In2O3 rates of photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to produce CH4 and CO were 190.32 μmol g−1h−1 and 500.46 μmol g−1h−1, which are 2.1, 10.3 times and 2.4, 7.9 times higher than pristine CuO and In2O3, respectively. This work provides a feasible strategy for the design and synthesis of binuclear-centered photocatalysts with interfacial engineered modulation and application to the photocatalytic reduction of CO2.

Abstract:In this work, H+ in oxalic acid was used instead of Na+ to obtain titanate nanosheets through P200 hydrolysis, which further curled to form a multilayer TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) structure. Then, Cu2O quantum dots (QDs) were successfully loaded on TiO2 NTs by hydrothermal method using fructose as a reducing agent. The optical, impedance, and photocurrent tests indicated that the composite structure improved its optoelectronic performance. The photocatalytic H2 production and CO2 reduction efficiency of Cu2O QDs/TiO2 NTs were lower than those of TiO2 NTs. However, the molar ratio of CH4 to CO produced by CO2 reduction of Cu2O QDs/TiO2 NTs composite catalyst was greater than that of pure TiO2 NTs. The CH4 production accounted for 97%, indicating that the composite catalyst had a high CH4 selectivity. The experimental and DFT calculation results proved that the Z‐scheme heterojunction accelerated the separation and transfer of photo‐generated carriers, and broadened the absorption range of visible light. CdS/ZnO: A Multipronged Approach for Efficient Reduction of Carbon Dioxide under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to fuels is a sustainable approach to obtain clean energy from CO2 using solar energy. This work focuses on a multipronged approach for efficient photoreduction of CO2 by designing a CdS/ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst. It is found that the combination of CdS and ZnO leads to about 11 times higher activity (383 K) for the reduction of CO2 to fuels than that over CdS under the irradiation of visible light. This is ascribed to the well-matched structural and intrinsic properties of the CdS/ZnO heterojunction, in which generation of electrons and holes by CdS-captured photons, separation and migration of electrons to ZnO by the heterojunction, and efficient adsorption/activation of CO2 on ZnO all work in a concert and harmonious way. This work highlights the potential of improving the performance of CO2 photocatalytic reduction based on a multipronged approach.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis has become one of the most attractive strategies for lowering atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) level and achieving the carbon balance; whereas, the fast electron–hole recombination and sluggish charge transfer in photocatalysts are themain stumbling blocks to the applications. Constructing semiconductor nano-heterostructures provides a promising strategy to accelerate the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers for promoting the multielectron CO2 reduction reaction. Herein, a CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 three-component photocatalyst consisting of type II and Z-scheme tandem heterojunctions is skillfully fabricated via the solvothermal synthesis followed with photoinduced deposition. The CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 tandem-heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits superior performance toward the conversion of CO2 to fuels (CO and CH4), compared with the single- and binary-component systems, owing to the favorable energy-level alignment, accelerated charge separation, facilitated water dissociation and sufficient reactive-hydrogen provision. The total consumed electron number of CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 catalyst for CO2 reduction is about 10.5 times that of pure g-C3N4. The photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated according to detailed characterizations and in-situ spectroscopy analyses. This work sheds light on the rational construction of heterojunction photocatalysts to promote the conversion of CO2 to solar fuels, without using any sacrifice reagent or noble-metal cocatalysts.

Abstract:To realize the evolution of C2+ hydrocarbons like C2H4 from CO2 reduction in photocatalytic systems remains a great challenge, owing to the gap between the relatively lower efficiency of multielectron transfer in photocatalysis and the sluggish kinetics of C-C coupling. Herein, with Cu-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a precursor, a hybrid photocatalyst (CuOX@p-ZnO) with CuOX uniformly dispersed among polycrystalline ZnO was synthesized. Upon illumination, the catalyst exhibited the ability to reduce CO2 to C2H4 with a 32.9% selectivity, and the evolution rate was 2.7 μmol·g-1·h-1 with water as a hole scavenger and as high as 22.3 μmol·g-1·h-1 in the presence of triethylamine as a sacrificial agent, all of which have rarely been achieved in photocatalytic systems. The X-ray absorption fine structure spectra coupled with in situ FT-IR studies reveal that, in the original catalyst, Cu mainly existed in the form of CuO, while a unique Cu+ surface layer upon the CuO matrix was formed during the photocatalytic reaction, and this surface Cu+ site is the active site to anchor the in situ generated CO and further perform C-C coupling to form C2H4. The C-C coupling intermediate *OC-COH was experimentally identified by in situ FT-IR studies for the first time during photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Moreover, theoretical calculations further showed the critical role of such Cu+ sites in strengthening the binding of *CO and stabilizing the C-C coupling intermediate. This work uncovers a new paradigm to achieve the reduction of CO2 to C2+ hydrocarbons in a photocatalytic system.

Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to hydrocarbon fuel is a potential strategy to solve energy shortage and mitigate the greenhouse effect. Here, direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts (In2O3/Bi2S3) without an electron mediator are prepared by a simple hydrolysis method. The In2O3/Bi2S3 composite photocatalysts show greatly boosted photoactivity on CO2 conversion to CO compared with the pristine In2O3 and Bi2S3. The highest CO evolution rate of 2.67 μmol·g-1·h-1 is achieved by In2O3/Bi2S3-3, without any sacrificial agent or cocatalyst, which is about 3.87 times that of In2O3 (0.69 μmol·g-1·h-1). The boosted photocatalytic performance of In2O3/Bi2S3 composite catalysts can be ascribed to the establishment of a Z-scheme heterojunction, improving the photoabsorption and facilitating charge separation and transfer. This study provides a reference for designing and fabricating high-efficiency Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Z-scheme heterojunction can effectively separate photo-generated carriers and enhance photocatalytic activity of CO2 reduction. In this work, we report indirect Z-scheme heterojunction of UiO-66-NH2/Cu2O/Cu, which achieves highly CO2 photocatalytic conversion to CO. Among these, UiO-66-NH2/Cu2O/Cu-0.39 (U/C/Cu-0.39) displays the best activity with a CO yield of 4.54 μmol·g−1·h−1, which is 37.8 times higher than that for UiO-66-NH2 and 50.4 times higher than that for Cu2O. Cu not only acts as the electron conductor of the indirect Z-scheme heterojunction to promote the charge carrier transmission, but also acts as the active site of CO2 reduction. The increase of active sites and the CO2 adsorption capacity results in the superior photocatalytic performances.

Abstract:Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the rational design of efficient S-scheme heterojunctions holds promises for CO 2 conversion by utilizing solar light. Herein, nitrogen-rich doped 001-exposed anatase nanosheets (NPT) have been designed and fabricated by post-treatment with NH 3 at a high temperature of 600 °C to phosphate modified TiO 2 firstly, and then controllably coupled with copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) via a hydroxyl-induced assembly process to construct a wide-visible-light responsive heterojunction towards CO 2 conversion. The optimized CuPc/NPT heterojunction achieves a high production rate of CO (∼5 μmol/g/h) under visible light irradiation, with ∼9-fold enhancement compared with generally N-doped TiO 2 . Based on the experimental results mainly from photocurrent action spectra, electron paramagnetic resonance measurements, electrochemical reduction curves and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra, it is confirmed that the exceptional photoactivity is attributed to the N-rich doping for increasing visible-light absorption of TiO 2 , the effective S-scheme charge transfer from the closely-contacted CuPc/NPT heterojunction with wide visible-light absorption, and subsequently to the electron transfer from the Pc ligand to central metal Cu 2+ with good catalytic function for CO 2 reduction. This work provides feasible routes for the design and preparation of TiO 2 -based photocatalysts for solar-driven CO 2 conversion.

Abstract:Developing efficient photocatalysts for CO2 reduction into value-added chemical feedstocks is of significance. Heterojunction photocatalysts are promising candidates but still suffering from the insufficient electron-hole pair separation issues. Herein, a strategy that dual metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) template-directed fabrication of carbon-supported heterojunction, C-In2O3@MO (MO = ZnO, Co3O4, and ZnCo2O4) with tunable band matching structure was developed. The resultant hollow- structured C-In2O3@ZnCo2O4 shows high CO2 reduction activity towards CO (44.1 μmol g1 h−1) with a selectivity of 66%. The superior performance of this material could be ascribed to the suitable energy band matching and efficient internal charge transfer on p-n heterojunction, which facilitates electron-hole separation. Meanwhile, the hollow cavity not only improved light-harvesting capability through multiple light reflection and scattering in the internal voids but also provided large surface area for exposing active sites to promoting the activation of CO2. This study thus proposes a feasible approach to adjust the heterojunction structure of photocatalysts to achieve efficient CO2 reduction reaction.

S-scheme heterojunction Cu-porphyrin/TiO2 nanosheets with highly efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2 in ambient air

Abstract:Directly capturing CO2 in ambient air and converting it into value-added fuels using photocatalysis is a potentially valuable technology. In this study, Cu-porphyrin (tetrakis-carboxyphenyl porphyrin copper, CuTCPP) was innovatively anchored on the surface of TiO2 (titanium dioxide) nanosheets to form an S-scheme heterojunction. Based on this, a photocatalytic reaction system for stably converting CO2 in ambient air into value-added fuels at the gas-solid interface was constructed without addition of sacrificial agents and alkaline liquids. Under the illumination of visible light and sunlight, the evolution rate of CO is 56 μmol·g-1·h-1 and 73 μmol·g-1·h-1, respectively, with a potential CO2 conversion rate of 35.8 % and 50.4 %. The enhanced of photocatalytic performance is attributed to the introduction of CuTCPP, which provides additional active sites, significantly improves capture capacity of CO2 and the utilization of electrons. Additionally, the formation of S-scheme heterojunction expands the redox range and improves the separation efficiency of photo-generated charges.
Construction of TiO2/CuPc Heterojunctions for the Efficient Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 with Water

Abstract:Utilizing solar energy for photocatalytic CO2 reduction is an attractive research field because of its convenience, safety, and practicality. The selection of an appropriate photocatalyst is the key to achieve efficient CO2 reduction. Herein, we report the synthesis of TiO2/CuPc heterojunctions by compositing CuPc with TiO2 microspheres via a hydroxyl-induced self-assembly process. The experimental investigations demonstrated that the optimal TiO2/0.5CuPc photocatalyst exhibited a significantly enhanced CO2 photoreduction rate up to 32.4 mu molg(-1)h(-1) under 300 W xenon lamp irradiation, which was 3.7 times that of the TiO2 microspheres alone. The results of photoelectrochemical experiments indicated that the construction of the heterojunctions by introducing CuPc effectively promoted the separation and transport of photogenerated carriers, thus enhancing the catalytic effect of the photocatalyst.
Coupling Cu Single Atoms and Phase Junction for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with 100% CO Selectivity

Abstract:Reducing CO2 through artificial photosynthesis is a remarkable strategy for converting solar energy into useful chemical feedstocks. However, most photocatalytic systems suffer from low efficiency owing to insufficient active sites and the lack of a directional charge-transfer channel. Herein, we develop Cu single atoms (SAs) on the nitrogen-doped carbon anchored on TiO2 with the anatase-rutile mixed phase (Cu SAs/TiO2), which shows 100% CO selectivity and high apparent quantum efficiency of 2.0% at 420 nm in photocatalytic CO2 reduction with H2O vapor. Such a high performance is ascribed to the synergetic effect of Cu SAs and phase junction, where Cu SAs act as adsorption and activation sites of CO2 and phase junction accelerates the migration of photogenerated electrons along the Ti-N-Cu-(O-CO2) channel. Theoretical calculation further shows that the strong hybridization of Cu 3d and CO2-O 2p orbitals promotes the electron transfer from Cu SAs to CO2, effectively optimizing the rate-limiting step (CO2* -> COOH*).

Abstract:The application of solar energy to transform carbon dioxide into energy-rich products is one of the sustainable ways to alleviate energy scarcity and environmental crisis. However, the low efficiency of solar light and the high recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs limit the industrial value of photocatalytic technology in terms of applications. Here, we report a high-performance photocatalyst based on g-C3N4, which was compounded and modified utilizing CuInS2. The photocatalytic performance is enhanced by constructing Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers to meet the practical application requirements. CuInS2/g-C3N4 has the best photocatalytic CO yield of 246.75 μmol/g/h and CO selectivity of more than 93%. The role of dual-metal sites in the catalytic system is also explored by DFT calculations. The results not only provide a new perspective for the design of efficient CO2 photoreduction photocatalysts, but also provide a proven method for enhancing the performance of photocatalysts.

Abstract:Utilizing solar energy for photocatalytic CO2 reduction is an attractive research field because of its convenience, safety, and practicality. The selection of an appropriate photocatalyst is the key to achieve efficient CO2 reduction. Herein, we report the synthesis of TiO2/CuPc heterojunctions by compositing CuPc with TiO2 microspheres via a hydroxyl-induced self-assembly process. The experimental investigations demonstrated that the optimal TiO2/0.5CuPc photocatalyst exhibited a significantly enhanced CO2 photoreduction rate up to 32.4 μmol·g-1·h-1 under 300 W xenon lamp irradiation, which was 3.7 times that of the TiO2 microspheres alone. The results of photoelectrochemical experiments indicated that the construction of the heterojunctions by introducing CuPc effectively promoted the separation and transport of photogenerated carriers, thus enhancing the catalytic effect of the photocatalyst.

Abstract:Herein, it is delicately constructed Cu single‐atoms anchored CN with N2C vacancies (Cu1/N2CV‐CN) as dual active sites for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The Cu single‐atoms are identified as the active centers to accumulate photogenerated electrons for promoting CO2 chemisorption, while the N2C vacancy sites are proven to enhance the activation of H2O. Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into fuels using pure water as the proton source is of immense potential in simultaneously addressing the climate‐change crisis and realizing a carbon‐neutral economy. Single‐atom photocatalysts with tunable local atomic configurations and unique electronic properties have exhibited outstanding catalytic performance in the past decade. However, given their single‐site features they are usually only amenable to activations involving single molecules. For CO2 photoreduction entailing complex activation and dissociation process, designing multiple active sites on a photocatalyst for both CO2 reduction and H2O dissociation simultaneously is still a daunting challenge. Herein, it is precisely construct Cu single‐atom centers and two‐coordinated N vacancies as dual active sites on CN (Cu1/N2CV‐CN). Experimental and theoretical results show that Cu single‐atom centers promote CO2 chemisorption and activation via accumulating photogenerated electrons, and the N2CV sites enhance the dissociation of H2O, thereby facilitating the conversion from COO* to COOH*. Benefiting from the dual‐functional sites, the Cu1/N2CV‐CN exhibits a high selectivity (98.50%) and decent CO production rate of 11.12 μmol g−1 h−1. An ingenious atomic‐level design provides a platform for precisely integrating the modified catalyst with the deterministic identification of the electronic property during CO2 photoreduction process.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to carbon fuels is regarded as an ideal and sustainable way to provide clean energy and solve environmental crisis. Herein, a p-n Co3O4/TiO2 heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized by one-step pyrolysis of self-assembly ZIF-67/MIL-125, which was used in photocatalytic CO2 reduction for the first time. Co3O4 nanocages were highly dispersed on the surface of TiO2 nanoplates with an intimate contact. The optimal Co3O4/TiO2 exhibited a significantly enhanced CO evolution rate of 1256 μmol g-1 h-1 under simulated solar light, which was 2.4 times higher than that of pure Co3O4. The high photocatalytic performance of Co3O4/TiO2 was attributed to its enriched active sites and formed p-n heterojunctions. According to the electrocatalytic measurements, the possible mechanism and photoinduced charge transfer process were discussed in detail. We believe that this research provides a facile and efficient approach to fabricate MOF-derived heterojunction photocatalysts for CO2 reduction.
