Abstract:Photodeformable azobenzene-containing polyimides (azo-PIs) have attracted attention due to their photo-response, good mechanical property, and thermal stability. The deformation principle of azo-PIs mainly depends on the accumulation of conformational changes in one direction by polarized-light irradiation or pre-stretching. Herein, we synthesize a new deformable azo-PI and put forward a different strategy to achieve the photodeformation by improving azobenzene isomerization efficiency, which is attributed to the incorporation of azobenzene into the side chains of polyimide (s-azo-PI). The s-azo-PI film exhibits reversible bending behaviour under alternate ultraviolet and visible light irradiation without utilizing polarized light or pre-stretching. By means of this photodeformable behaviour, origami- or kirigami-inspired deformable 3D-structure objects, such as the cubic box and roller, are easily manufactured without any prior treatment, showing the potential to broaden applications of azopolymers in smart 3D actuators.

Abstract:Azobenzene-containing polyimides (azo-PIs) as photodeformable materials have attracted scientific attention in view of combining photoresponse and high performance (such as excellent mechanical and thermal properties). In the previously reported photodeformation of azo-PIs, polarized blue–green light was utilized to produce concerted motion of azobenzene moieties based on the mechanism of photoinduced reorientation. Herein, we explored a designed azo-PI undergoing photodeformation upon unpolarized light irradiation. The azo-PI film aligned by the hot-stretching process exhibited fast and reversible bending behavior under alternate ultraviolet (UV) and visible (vis) light irradiation, indicating the efficient nano-to-macroscopic propagation of molecular deformation of azobenzene. Abstract:Photodeformable polymers have significant potential for untethered smart actuation due to their rapid response and versatile deformation behaviors. However, altering deformation behaviors typically requires preparing materials with different macromolecular structures. Here, we achieved controllable reversal of photodeformation behaviors (bending away from or toward the light source) in side-chain azobenzene polyimides by adjusting the thermal treatment conditions. Different thermal treatments introduced variations in the internal free volume of the material, leading to two distinct deformation mechanisms under blue light exposure and resulting in opposite macroscopic deformation behaviors. By choosing appropriate thermal treatment methods, we fabricated actuators with specific functionalities and utilized the correlation between deformation behavior and thermal treatment to demonstrate a detector for thermal history. This postsynthesis regulation of the photodeformation behavior offers a convenient and repeatable manner to engineer actuation on demand.
Molecular Dynamics Simulations on Photoinduced Switchable Tg and Self-Healing Behaviors of Azobenzene-Containing Polymers

Abstract:Developing polymers with switchable glass transition temperature (Tg) can solve scientific challenges such as fracture healing of polymers with high Tg and processing of hard polymers without plasticizer at room temperature. The azobenzene-containing polymers, or the so-called azopolymers, are smart materials that show photoswitchable Tg and photoinduced motions, which can be used in fabrication of photoactuators. Here, healable and reprocessable models were constructed by using linear azopolymers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was used to study the behaviors of photo-induced bending, self-healing, and directional photofluidization of the azopolymers. A temporary modification of the C–N=N–C dihedral potential was applied to achieve the isomerization of azopolymer by using polymer consistent force-field (PCFF). The simulation results show that isomerization of azobenzene groups can lead to photoswitchable Tg of the azopolymers, which resulting in shape changes and different mechanical responses. Furthermore, the photoswitchable Tg makes the azopolymers much easier to heal under UV irradiation, and restore the mechanical properties under visible light irradiation. Finally, the mechanism of photoliquefaction was investigated, our results imply that the photoinduced trans–cis-trans cycles can reduce the mechanical properties and Tg values of azopolymers.

Abstract:Photomechanical effects realized in azobenzene-functionalized polyimides have shown large deformation and an exceptional increase in photogenerated force output. Here, we synthesize and characterize the photomechanical output of a series of linear polyimide materials prepared with a bulky substituent, incorporated via the development of a new bis(azobenzene-diamine) monomer containing a 9,9-diphenylfluorene cardo structure (azoCBODA). All six azoCBODA-containing polyimides are amorphous and exhibit high glass transition temperatures (Tg) ranging from 298 to 358 °C, storage moduli ranging from 2.27 to 3.81 GPa (at 30 °C), and good thermal stability. The magnitude of the photoinduced mechanical response of the azobenzene-functionalized polyimide is correlated to the rotational freedom of the polyimide chains (resulting in extensive segmental mobility) and fractional free volume (FFV > 0.1).

Abstract:The integration of different shape manipulation could greatly expand the versatility and functionality of smart materials, for which the achievement of synergism of different shape control is crucial. Here, we seek to create one kind of polyimide with integrated multiple shape manipulations by constructing the chemical network bearing azobenzene as a side chain. Trifunctional cross-linkers serving as net points of the chemical network render polyimide thermal-induced shape memory effects, which enables shape transformation. Azobenzene as a photoresponsive group is employed to achieve the photofixity and reversible photodeformability. Such photosensitive behaviors are independent of molecular prealignment and remain available after thermally shaping and fixing. As a result, these noninterfering performances induced by heat and light allow us to arbitrarily combine them to meet different needs. By integrating different shape manipulations, various shape changes and functional execution are conveniently achieved. The combination of the shape memory effect with photofixity enables the setting of diverse shapes, while the merging of it with reversible deformation facilitates the construction of actuators capable of executing functions. This study provides a new approach for the preparation of multifunctional actuators and has potential applications in the field of intelligent drivers.

Abstract:Azobenzene (azo) polymer photoactuators with full room-temperature reprogrammability, reprocessability, and photomobility are highly desirable for large-scale applications, but their development remains a daunting challenge. Herein, a strategy is first presented for fabricating such advanced photoactuators from a high-molecular-weight main-chain azo crystalline poly(ester-amide) (PEA) prepared via Michael addition polymerization. This azo PEA can be readily processed into both physically cross-linked, uniaxially oriented fibers and films with high mechanical robustness and reversible photoinduced bending/unbending at room temperature. Importantly, the presence of both amide unit-induced hydrogen bonding and crystalline domains in such films and fibers endows them with dynamic, yet stable cross-linking points, which enable their easy reprogrammability under strain at room temperature into various three-dimensional (3D) shapes (e.g., film helicoid and spiral ribbon, fiber spring) capable of showing completely different shape-dependent photomobile modes. In particular, these reshaped photoactuators can maintain their accurate 3D shapes and highly reversible photoinduced motions even after being kept at 80 °C for 20 days or at 100 °C for 2 days. They can also be reprocessed and recycled from solution at room temperature. Such a multifunctional main-chain azo crystalline PEA can serve as a versatile platform for fabricating various photoactuators with desired 3D shapes and motion modes under mild ambient conditions.
Role of Alicyclic Conformation-Isomerization in the Photomechanical Performance of Azobenzene-Functionalized Cross-Linked Polyimides Containing Tetra-Substituted Cyclohexane Moieties

Abstract:The classical "chair-twist boat-boat" conformational dynamics (CD) of cyclohexane is thermally activated. Here we report on the photoinduced/azobenzene-assisted CD of bilaterally fused cyclohexane moieties contributing to large photomechanical response of cross-linked azobenzene-functionalized polyimides (X-azoPI), based on 1,2,4,5-cyclohexane-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (CHDA), exhibiting a photobending angle and photogenerated stress, up to ∼90° and 370 kPa, respectively. In contrast, X-azoPI containing planar pyromellitimide (PMDI) or cage-like bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic-diimide (BCDI) show smaller photomechanical responses. The superior photomechanical performance of X-azoPI with constrained cyclohexane-diimide (CHDI) units is attributed to an increased mobility of segments comprising "hinged" p-phenylene rings, azobenzene, and CHDI units in the cross-link sites. Blue light irradiation initiates the motions driven by photoisomerization/reorientation of azobenzenes connected to CHDI units, whose CD is then amplified, leading to longer-range segmental mobility, more local free volume, and culminating in large photoinduced bending. The trapping of redistributed CHDI's stereoisomers in X-azoPI backbone at Troom is implicated for the observed photothermal memory.

Abstract:The use of a crosslinked azobenzene liquid-crystalline polymer (CALP) system for micro-integrated actuators becomes especially attractive. CALPs can deform. along the alignment direction of mesogens upon irradiation of UV/visible light owing to photochemical phase transition. In this study, to improve the bending speed, CALP films with a homogenous alignment on one surface and a homeotropic alignment on the opposite surface (hybrid alignment) were prepared and their bending behavior was investigated. The films showed photoinduced bending whose direction was determined by the surface alignment treatments and the bending speed was greatly enhanced upon irradiation from both surfaces of the film at the same time.

Abstract:Photo-responsive mechanical actuator is a class of stimuli-responsive materials transferring light to mechanical energy through macroscopic transformation. To fabricate photo-responsive mechanical actuator, soft polymeric materials crosslinked with functional bridging structures are desired. Supramolecular interaction is a relatively common way to fabricate crosslinked materials due to its excellent self-assembly performance. And azobenzene and derivatives are ideal candidates of photo-responsive materials because of the unique photo-induced trans-cis isomerization. Here, a new kind of crosslinked materials based on supramolecular interaction between 4,4′-dihydroxyazobenzene and chitosan is reported. Under 355 nm irradiation, the macroscopic bending of polymeric materials occurs rapidly due to the photo-isomerization of 4,4′-dihydroxyazobenzene. Meanwhile, the photo-responsive mechanical actuator can also lift weight which is up to 200 times that of the actuator itself, and convert energy from light to mechanical work efficiently. This report suggests a new kind of photo-responsive actuator based on supramolecular interaction and may be helpful to contribute a theoretical basis to the design and synthesis of photo-responsive mechanical actuator suitable for large-scale manufacturing industrialization in future.

Abstract:Several kinds of photodeformable polymer systems containing azobenzenes, capable of generating photomechanical effects, are reviewed. In polymer amorphous systems including monolayers, gels and solid films, trans-cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene moieties accompanied by geometrical and dipolar changes caused contraction and expansion of the systems. Recently, polymer liquid-crystalline elastomers containing azobenzenes, a novel system able to produce the photomechanical effects, have been developed to achieve fast and large photoinduced deformations. It is interesting that not only photoinduced contraction but also photoinduced bending have been achieved. These deformations are ascribed to the subtle variation in microscopic ordering during the photochemical phase transition of the polymer liquid-crystalline elastomers. This new photomechanical system is potential for application in driving micromachines and nanomachines without the aid of batteries, motors and gears.
Synthesis, characterization, and study of photoinduced optical anisotropy in polyimides containing side azobenzene units

Abstract:In this paper, novel processable aromatic polymers with imide rings and attached as side-chain azobenzene units are presented. Polymers differ in the chemical structures of chromophores and polymer backbones. Azopolymers were obtained by a two-step synthetic approach. This includes the preparation of a precursor poly(esterimide) and poly(etherimide) with pendant phenolic hydroxyl groups, followed by the covalent bonding of NLO chromophores onto the polyimide backbone by the Mitsunobu reaction. The degree of functionalization of polymers was estimated by UV-vis spectroscopy. Polymers were characterized and evaluated by FT-IR, (1)H NMR, X-ray, UV-vis, DSC, and TGA methods. The synthesized polymers exhibited glass transition temperatures in the range of 167-228 degrees C, thermal stability with decomposition temperatures in the range of 275-446 degrees C, and excellent solubilities in common organic solvents. The light-induced optical anisotropy was studied in obtained azopolymers with the help of a holographic grating recording technique. Two polarization geometries were applied for the grating inscription s-s and p-p. The influence of the polarization geometry on the diffraction efficiency dynamics and on the depth of the surface modulation was not observed, which is different from results reported in the literature. Surface relief gratings, which appeared after the light exposure, were observed by atomic force microscopy. Additionally, the optical anisotropy in poly(esterimide)s was investigated by photoinduced birefringence measurements. For the first time, in polyimide with covalently bonded azobenzene derivatives, the high photoinduced birefringence (Delta n = 0.01) was measured.

Abstract:Integration of controllable deformation with excellent thermal stability, mechanical, and insulation properties can greatly expand the versatility of smart polyimides (PIs). However, the unique molecular structure of PI makes it difficult for its molecular chain to move, which is not conducive to the reversible transformation of highly stable PI under environmental conditions. In this study, a PI film integrating shape memory and photo deformation is prepared by constructing a chemical network with PI oligomer as the hard, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as the soft, and azobenzene as the functional chain segment. The PI films still have a high glass transition temperature Tg ~ 225°C, a high Young's modulus E ~ 3.5 GPa, and a good breakdown strength Eb ~ 176 kV/mm. Moreover, as the network point of the chemical network, the trifunctional crosslinking agent makes the PI produce the shape memory effect induced by light and heat. UV light can drive crosslinked photoresponsivity PI film to have special shape transformation under specific conditions, using azobenzene as photoresponsivity group. This study provides a new idea for the preparation of multifunctional PI, which makes it potentially applicable in the field of smart electric and electronic engineering.

Abstract:Cross-linked azobenzene liquid-crystalline polymer films with a poly(oxyethylene) backbone are synthesized by photoinitiated cationic copolymerization. Azobenzene moieties in the film surface toward the light source are simultaneously photoaligned during photopolymerization with unpolarized 436 nm light and thus form a splayed alignment in the whole film. The prepared films show reversible photoinduced bending behavior with opposite bending directions when different surfaces of one film face to ultraviolet light irradiation.

Abstract:The side polyimide containing azobenzene group was synthesized with photochromism property from 2,2-Bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyyphenyl) hexafluoropropane(6FHP),pyromellitic dianhydride(PMDA) and dispersed red 1(DR1).The chemical structure and thermal properties of polyimide were characterized using Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR),ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis) spectroscopy,differential scanning calorimeter(DSC),and thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA).The DSC and TGA exhibited the glass transition temperature(Tg) and the decomposition temperature(Td) of polymer were 298 ℃ and 365 ℃,respectively.These results showed that the material had excellent thermal stability.The UV-induced trans/ cis photoisomerization and the thermal reflex-isomerization behavior were investigated for the polymer in solution and in film.The results indicate that the polymer solution and polymer film can undergo photochromism after a given UV wavelength (365 nm) photoinduction.This showed that the polyimide could be used to carry out perpetuity photoinduced birefringence and recording.

Abstract:Stimulus-sensitive materials are of great fascination in surface and interface science owing to their dynamically tunable surface properties and/or morphologies. Herein, we have synthesized an azobenzene-containing polyimide (azo-PI) with enhanced chain flexibility for the fabrication of photosensitive surface patterns on a film/substrate wrinkle system or wrinkle-free devices. The phototriggered <i>cis-trans</i> isomerization kinetics of azobenzene groups in the novel azo-PI with various chain structures were systematically investigated. On the basis of the characteristics of stress relaxation that azobenzene reversible <i>cis-trans</i> isomerization induces in the wrinkled azo-PI film/substrate system, a variety of rewritable visual surface patterns with high resolution and a long legibility time (>30 days) could be easily constructed via visible-light irradiation, enabling the wrinkled azo-PI surfaces to be used as rewritable information storage media. Meanwhile, because of the visible-light irradiation strategy, these photoresponsive surfaces could find potential application in the fabrication of wrinkle-free flexible devices. This study not only sheds light on the influence of the azo-polymer chain structure on its photoresponsive behavior but also provides a versatile strategy for realizing tailor-made smart surface patterns on multilayer functional devices.

Abstract:We have investigated the inclined alignment of polyimide molecules (containing azobenzene in the backbone structure) induced by oblique angle irradiation of ultraviolet (UV) light. The UV irradiation was performed for a polyamic acid film, which then was thermally converted into a polyimide film. The orientation of the polyimide backbone structure was determined by measuring the polarized infrared absorption spectra as a function of the angle of incidence. We confirmed that inclined alignment of the polyimide backbone structures is obtained by oblique angle UV irradiation, and that this also induces tilted homogeneous liquid crystal (LC) alignment. For the UV irradiation conditions used in the present study, the average inclination angle of the polyimide backbone structure was about 4° from the surface plane. The pretilt angle of the LC molecules was 0.9°.

Abstract:The development of physically cross-linked photodeformable main-chain azobenzene poly(ester-amide)s with enhanced performances via chemical structure engineering and obtention of their detailed structure–property relationship are first described. The synthesis of a series of photodeformable main-chain azobenzene (azo) poly(ester-amide)s (PEAs) with different flexible spacer lengths, molecular weights, and amide unit location via Michael addition polymerization and study of the correlation between their chemical structures and performances are first described. These PEAs showed low crystallinity degrees and glass transition temperatures, high thermal stability, reversible photoresponsivity, and amide unit-induced hydrogen bonding interactions. Their chemical structures exhibited a large influence on their film-forming capability as well as mechanical and photomechanical properties. Physically cross-linked uniaxially oriented fibers and films with high mechanical strength and reversible room-temperature photoinduced bending/unbending behaviors were fabricated from high-molecular-weight PEAs with a flexible spacer (–(CH 2 ) n –) between the amide unit and azo mesogen (PEA- n ), whereas their low-molecular-weight counterpart and PEA with the amide unit directly connected to the azo mesogen (PEA-2b) only formed brittle fibers/films. The mechanical strength of PEA- n fibers/films increased with the increase in the molecular weights and flexible spacer length, whereas optimal photomechanical effects were observed for PEA- n samples with a moderate molecular weight and a shorter flexible spacer ( n = 2). The photomobile rates and amplitudes of PEA fibers/films can be well correlated with their elastic moduli and photoinduced stress. In addition, the decisive role of the aggregation states of PEA samples in their mechanical strength as well as those of both the amide unit-induced physical cross-linking and alignment structure in their photomobility was also demonstrated. This work not only presents photodeformable main-chain azo PEAs with enhanced performances via chemical structure engineering, but also lays the foundation for rationally designing more advanced physically cross-linked photomobile main-chain azo polymers.
